STORIES of Tomorrow D5.8b 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge
Introduction
The STORIES consortium partner WRO Hellas is the main entity conducting Educational Robotics
competitions in Greece and South East Europe, as well as the official organizer of World Robot
Olympiad National Finals for the countries of Greece, Albania, Bulgaria, Cyprus and North
Macedonia. With the volunteering assistance of well-known scientists and academics, WRO
Hellas uses competitions as leverage, with the aim of facilitating the introduction of STEM and
educational robotics to the school curriculum.
WRO Hellas designed the WRO Primary School Challenge on the subject of “Colonize Mars”,
especially for the purposes of STORIES of Tomorrow. The Challenge was designed to be
integrated in the Panhellenic Contest of Educational Robotics, which is a contest that is organized
by WRO Hellas on an annual basis, each year attracting more than 2000 Primary School students,
800 Junior High School students and 250 Senior High School students. In this way, the STORIES
consortium aspired to demonstrate the potential of the platform’s approach to the wide audience
of WRO Hellas’ contests.
Throughout the period of M22-M27, the 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge was realized in
Greece, following last year’s 1st WRO Primary School Challenge (M7-M18). Once, again, the
Challenge has been a 5-months long journey for Greece’s Primary School students. Its main
purposes were to introduce Greek Primary School students and their teachers to the STORIES
storytelling platform, as well as help the Greek primary schools introduce the STEM education
approach into their curriculum, either by enriching their official curriculum or by offering
appropriate after-school activities.
This year, the Challenge broadened its geographical reach and addressed schools from all over
Greece and not only Athens, as happened with last year’s Challenge’s pilot approach. What is
more, new countries entered this year’s Challenge and were exposed to the STORIES platform,
as well as to STEM educational approach. To further boost this growing community of ours,
throughout the period of M22-M27 we designed and implemented the following supporting
activities in the framework of the Challenge:
● Workshops, trainings, webinars and one summer school for teachers, on the subject of
STEM and educational robotics
● Presentations and trainings for teachers, on the subject of the STORIES platform specifically
● Donation of educational robotics infrastructure to 40 Greek Primary schools
● Regional Preliminary Challenges in Greece’s 13 regions
● Final Challenge in Athens
● Selection of the best submitted projects with the aim of transforming them into lesson plans
and uploading them on our website, making them accessible to any Greek-speaking teacher
that may be interested in introducing educational robotics activities to their classroom

Part A – Overview of the Challenge and report of activities
1. 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge
This summarizes the 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge, which started on October 2018, had its Finals on March 16&17, 2019 and was completed on July 2019. In the framework of the Challenge, WRO Hellas introduced participant Primary school students, as well as their teachers, to the STORIES Storytelling Platform, through their participation to “Colonize Mars”, a challenge especially designed for students of 10-12 years.
1.1 The Challenge’s theme: “Colonize Mars”
The WRO Primary School Challenge is a project-based competition. The Challenge invites students to form teams of 2-6 members and create their own intelligent robotics solution, relating to the theme “Colonize Mars”. In the framework of the Challenge, teams are tasked with ideating, building and programming a robotics construction, including modern technology achievements that take into account Mars’ landscape and particularities. Throughout the preparation period, students research the laws of physics and the technological advancements and challenges regarding space exploration, brainstorm, construct and program, test, improve and test again, until they end up with their final project. On the days of the contest (first on a regional level and then on the Finals) teams present their final model and explain its function in detail. The most impressive automation concepts and the best constructions are awarded.

2.1 3rd WRO Summer School of Educational Robotics
In the beginning of the school year of 2018-2019, on 7-9 September 2019 we organized the 3rd WRO Summer School of Educational Robotics which was offered free of charge for teachers of all levels of education. The 3rd WRO Summer School or Educational Robotics addressed teachers who participate in our contests either as coaches of student teams or as judges. The Summer School aimed at bringing together teachers who are less familiar with the field of educational robotics and relevant actions & competitions, with teachers who have already gained experience through their participation in the Educational Robotics Competitions organized by WRO Hellas, as well as coaches who have been distinguished by representing our country in World Robot Olympiad. The 3rd WRO Summer School of Educational Robotics was offered free of charge to 80 primary and secondary school teachers. During the Summer School, participating teachers were introduced to our organization’s agenda for the school year 2018-2019 and were informed that the STORIES platform would continue being a part of our robotics contest and that they were invited to participate. During this presentation, STORIES leaflets were distributed to participating teachers.

2.2 Announcement of the 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge
The 2nd Primary School WRO Challenge was officially announced on October 5th 2018, as part of the Panhellenic Contest of Educational Robotics 2019. The Challenge was announced via WRO Hellas’ website and all social channels, reaching more than 20,000 people. The hype around STORIES was given a further boost by relevant publications made by schools on their owned websites, mostly in the case of schools participating in the Challenge itself or sponsored with robotics kits for their participation in STORIES. What is more, the announcement was diffused through the social channels of our strategic partner COSMOTE and through the channels of Greece’s most prominent media. In total, the promotional activities that were implemented in the framework of the announcement helped reach more than 200,000 Greek individuals, with the aim of introducing them to the Challenge and to the STORIES storytelling platform. The announcement of the Panhellenic Contest of Educational Robotics and all related promotional tools included a paragraph-wide reference to the STORIES OF TOMORROW platform, this year inviting schools not only from Athens but the whole of Greece, to participate in the platform within their participation to the contest. The reference provided some basic information on the platform and invited 40 new schools to apply for participation to the platform, apart from the contest itself. The schools that would participate in the platform would be provided with a LEGO Education WeDo 2.0 robotics set as sponsorship, in the framework of the Stories Initiative.

2.4 Selection and support of 40 new schools from all Greek regions for
participation to the STORIES OF TOMORROW platform within their
participation to the Panhellenic Contest of Educational Robotics 2019
All communication and information material related to Primary School participants of the Panhellenic Contest of Educational Robotics 2019 included a n extensive text presenting the STORIES OF TOMORROW platform and inviting 40 new schools to participate in the platform within their participation to the robotics contest. The text was published on WRO Hellas' website and was also sent to WRO Hellas' mailing list. At the same time, we increased our direct promotion efforts, mostly through our call center and with email marketing, starting and focusing on teachers and schools from the Greek regions that tend to have an “early adopter” attitude towards our competitions and related activities (ex. Thessaly, Peloponnese, Central Macedonia) and then proceeding with the rest of the Greek regions. Our communication on this level aimed at informing schools about the existence of an opportunity to participate in the 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge, gain access to the STORIES platform and gain a robotics kit as sponsorship for their participation and overall contribution to STORIES research. The first 40 schools that expressed interest in participating in the platform were granted with 40 LEGO Education WEDo 2.0 robotic sets, as sponsorship in the framework of the STORIES Initiative. In overall, we managed to help STORIES reach at least 1 school in every region of Greece (13 regions in total). The list of schools and their geographical reach can be found in Table 2.

2.5 Organization of free-of-charge webinars and seminars all around Greece
Throughout the period of November 2018 to February 2019, WRO Hellas organized 23 pop-up presentations in schools in 23 different cities of Greece (from all 13 Greek regions), 4 major workshops in the cities of Thessaloniki, Xanthi, Kozani, Florina and Patras and 2 series of open-access webinars for all school teachers of Greece. Depending on each case, the above educational actions addressed either teachers of all educational levels or school students with their parents or university students with technical specialization. All the above actions served as promotional platforms for the Stories Initiative to reach almost 900 students and teachers across Greece. In the case of teachers, the workshops, seminars and webinars that were offered aimed at familiarizing participants with the LEGO Education infrastructure and solving questions related to designing and building robotic structures and projects, in the framework of supporting teachers through their preparation for the Panhellenic Contest of Educational Robotics. Moreover they served as promotional tools for the STORIES platform, since they all informed participant teachers about the platform and distributed the STORIES informational digital flyers. In this way awareness over the STORIES platform has been further built throughout Greek schools in all Greek regions. In the particular case of seminars and webinars held for elementary teachers, WRO instructors also tried to offer technical support in simple issues and answered questions regarding the use, as well as the possibilities of the STORIES platform.

2.6 Organization of 1 exclusive training webinar for teachers who participate in
the STORIES platform
On January 28 WRO Hellas in collaboration with Dr. Angelos Lazoudis from Ellinogermaniki Agogi, we organized 1 training webinar exclusively for the teachers who were selected for participation to the STORIES platform. The webinar aimed at introducing teachers to the platform's use and possibilities. 15 teachers watched live the webinar, while 60 teachers were sent the recorded version of the webinar, as they were not available for live participation. The webinar was held before teachers were given access to the platform and aspired to provide them with an initial overview to the platform’s design, current and future possibilities and basic operation. Moreover, it aimed at helping teachers connect the STORIES platform with the projects they were building with their students in the framework of the Challenge.

2.7 14 regional contests throughout Greece From 6 to 17 February 2019, all 14 educational regions of Greece organized their regional preliminary competitions, accepting a total of 1238 teams (5271 students). Between them, 119 Primary School teams (357 students) from all regions except for Cyclades, North Aegean and South Aegean, participated in 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge. From total 119 teams participating in the Challenge, 30 teams (180 students) participated in the STORIES storytelling platform as well. With the aim of monitoring and supporting the 30 STORIES teams as closely as possible, we created a special sub-category called “STORIES” category. In this way, the 30 STORIES teams would compete only with each other and the 3 teams with the best projects would be awarded for ranking 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

2.8.2 International teams at the Finals
Being the National Organizer of World Robot Olympiad for the countries of Greece, Albania, Bulgaria,
Cyprus and North Macedonia, during the period of M22-M27 we initiated a synergy with our local
respective partners, aiming at reaching local students and inviting them to enter the 2nd WRO Primary
School Challenge.
More particularly we discussed the project with key academics and informal education players in all 5
countries where we are organizing the WRO Tournament. Through their network we came in touch with
some key schools, which were willing to include the platform in their curriculums. The first local teams
from Bulgaria, North Macedonia and Romania attended the Finals of 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge
(MARS Challenge) and presented their projects, as well as asked for the creation of accounts in the
platform, for their students to participate in. In the case of Cyprus, a local WRO Primary School Challenge
was co-organized by WRO Hellas and Frederick University on March 29th 2019 and was hosted at the
premises of Frederick University.

3. Winning Projects of the STORIES category
1st place
Team name: MarsAgrotica Team name on the STORIES platform: 2nd Greek WRO Challenge Team 36 School: 1st Primary School of Palamas Teacher name: Makis Samoladas Number of active students in the STORIES platform: 6 Project Description: Our project is called “Tomatoes from Mars”. Our robotic construction is the solution to the initial cultivation of plants on Mars, so the first inhabitants find their vegetables ready when they reach the red planet. For the Martian soil we use ground lentils so that DIMITRA, our robot can dig more easily. Our robot automatically plants tomato seeds in 3 stages: 1. It opens a planting pit at the point where the "seed pointer" is placed 2. It places the seeds into the ground 3. It covers the seeds with soil
At the same time, our model is our proposal for space-saving greenhouses on Mars. For our project we used one computer, two hubs LEGO WeDO 2.0, 3 motors, a distance sensor and a microphone.

2nd place
Team name: Vytina Robotics Team name on the STORIES platform: 2nd Greek WRO Challenge Team 15 School: Primary School of Vytina Teacher name: Ioannis Karountzos Participant students on the STORIES platform: 6
Project Description:
Our project proposes the creation of a human colony that will develop into a glass dome that will
provide a stable oxygen level for people living on Mars. Unfortunately, the red planet has an
extremely sparse atmosphere, so its surface is often bombarded by meteorites but also receives the
ultraviolet radiation of the sun, which is not filtered. The effects of these problems make the
habitation of the planet seem unattainable.
To remedy the problem Vytina Robotics designed a system that protects the colony, consisting of a
collapsible shield that covers the glass dome and is triggered by a space-based radar detector with
a built-in rocket launch system. When the radar identifies an asteroid that is a threat to the colony,
it activates the shield to cover the vault colony and ejects a high-power and range interceptor rocket
to break the asteroid into smaller pieces that cannot penetrate the shield, which is made of grapeon,
the strongest metal on Earth.

Part B – Overview of the STORIES participating teams
4. Overview of total participation
In total, 40 new schools from all over Greece were selected for participation in the STORIES platform, receiving 40 sets of educational robotics infrastructure respectively, as a reward. From the total 40 schools, 18 schools participated actively in the trainings that were organized in the framework of the Challenge and formed teams of 2-6 students who were registered in the STORIES platform. Overall, 52 schools out of total 80, if we also count last year’s schools, were connected to the STORIES platform, either in the framework of their participation to the 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge or outside this framework. Among them, 274 registered students actively interacted with the platform and created stories in the framework of the Challenge, as shown in table 6. In the framework of the 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge with the subject “Colonize Mars”, the STORIES teams were invited to visualize and present their robotics projects, using the STORIES storytelling platform. More in particular, teams were asked to create two episodes in the STORIES platform: On the 1st episode, which would be entitled “Before Mars”, they would describe their ideation process, i.e. the forming of their team, the delegation of roles, the research of the bibliography and the brainstorming process which lead them to their final concept. On the 2nd episode, which would be entitled “On Mars”, participating teams would visualize how their robotics structure would actually work, when on Mars. As shown in table 7, a total of 34 projects were uploaded in the STORIES platform, in the form of 64 episodes that comprised of 862 assets. On the following pages we provide an overview of the best 10 teams who created the most complete projects in the platform, while at the same time participating in the 2nd WRO Primary School Challenge with their robotics projects.

Team name: Kaisariani on Mars
Team name on the STORIES platform: 2nd Greek WRO Challenge Team 1
School: 7th Primary School of Kaisariani
Teacher name: Ioannis Theodonis
Participant students on the STORIES platform: 8
Project Description:
Mars is farther from Sun than Earth is. Mars receives about 20% of the solar radiation that Earth is
receiving. Virtually a solar panel on Mars compared to one on Earth produces about half and maybe
less energy in the best conditions. This percentage drops when the solar panels are filled with dust
from the sandstones that prevail on Mars surface. In fact, recently the rover “Opportunity“ lost
contact with NASA due to a windstorm that probably caused damage to its solar panel system.
Inspired by facts like these, bibliography and also movies such as WALL-E and The Martian, we
decided to tackle this problem by building a solar panel sweeper for Martian settlements.

Project Description:
We feel so proud of our two robotic vehicles. We are so safe in our lab and we calculate all the time
innumerous data sent by them. Now we know so much about the morphology of Mars. We have
studied enough the sandstorms. We have made conclusions:
Only 1/10 of Mars has the right morphology to build a colony. Sandstorms are dangerous only on
the North part of Mars.
We sent our data to NASA and we are awaiting for the next mission from Earth, “THE BUILDERS”.
They are going to build the colonies on the best places! Good luck Humanity!

Project Description:
At the top of Olympus on Mars, an automated radar, a "Planetary Protection System", has been
installed to detect meteorites or other space threats to the magnetic shield of Olympus or the whole
planet. This year was the second consecutive year that our team participated in the program.
Following our experience last year, our goal was to substantially upgrade our project, aesthetically,
constructively and programmatically, but without changing its central idea and philosophy. The
members of the group changed roles and all the structures were dissolved, redesigned and
manufactured from scratch.

Project Description:
We built a safe, subterranean space, below the surface of Mars, and we created an elevator with
two automations that can move us up to the surface and back to the safe space. Our space retains
an environment which is similar to the Earth’s, with soil, plants and water. In this way we have
created a perfect refugee where we can breathe, live and grow our food.

Project Description:
Our project proposes the creation of a human colony that will develop into a glass dome that will
provide a stable oxygen level for people living on Mars.
Unfortunately, the red planet has an extremely sparse atmosphere, so its surface is often
bombarded by meteorites but also receives the ultraviolet radiation of the sun, which is not filtered.
The effects of these problems make the habitation of the planet seem unattainable.
To remedy the problem Vytina Robotics designed a system that protects the colony, consisting of a
collapsible shield that covers the glass dome and is triggered by a space-based radar detector with
a built-in rocket launch system.
When the radar identifies an asteroid that is a threat to the colony, it activates the shield to cover
the vault colony and ejects a high-power and range interceptor rocket to break the asteroid into
smaller pieces that cannot penetrate the shield, which is made of grapeon, the strongest metal on
Earth.

Our robotic construction is the solution to the initial cultivation of plants on Mars, so the first inhabitants find their vegetables ready when they reach the red planet. For the Martian soil we use ground lentils so that DIMITRA, our robot can dig more easily. Our robot automatically plants tomato seeds in 3 stages: 4. It opens a planting pit at the point where the "seed pointer" is placed 5. It places the seeds into the ground 6. It covers the seeds with soil
At the same time, our model is our proposal for space-saving greenhouses on Mars. For our project we used one computer, two hubs LEGO WeDO 2.0, 3 motors, a distance sensor and a microphone.

Project Description:
We are in the year 2048. The environmental catastrophe that has been caused by humanity on Earth
has made it necessary for men to move to another planet of the solar system imperative. Scientists
turn to nearby Mars and all research missions focus on searching for one suitable place where a
human community could be organized.
Protection from the stormy winds of the Red Planet and the proximity to water deposits are two of
the most fundamental desirable features that will contribute to successful migration. As part of
Hellenic Space Agency's Apollo Hellas research mission, the spacecraft Mars Flier has already
transported successfully on Mars, in the summer of 2047, the robotic vehicle Aqua Mars, which is
looking for water deposits.
Just 8 months later, it's time for the next big step of the Greek mission, which is the landing of Mars
Hiker robotic vehicle, which makes altitude mapping of the terrain and counts the wind gusts. These
data will help researchers on earth find the spot that is most suitable and safer for colonization.

Project Description:
In the summer of 2018, traces of water were found in the southern pole of Mars, under the ice. Our
project is supposed to send a vehicle to the south pole. Our vehicle moves on the surface of ice and
has two automations:
1. Recognizes when the vehicle approaches a rock, stops and flashes its light
2. Recognizes when the vehicle is tilted to either side, stops and produces a distressing sound.

Project Description:
We're in 2030! We landed on Mars three months ago and we are working hard to organize the first
colony!
Initially, we built a shield in which we placed our homes. Then we built a greenhouse to produce
oxygen, linked to our colony with air ducts! The water is supplied from the subsoil of Mars in the
form of ice that will be transported to a reservoir. A part of the water will be led to a filtration and
osmosis tank to become drinkable and another part to another tank to irrigate our greenhouse
