So I set up our new repair solutions and tech tips newsletter to share these stories and showcase some of our great time saving tools. The story below is definitely something that could potentially save you time and trouble in the workshop, I hope you find it interesting. Auric Stories from the Workshop This month’s story comes from Tony's Auto Clinic Katikati Problem – Rough Idle and Engine Check Light on We recently had a 2008 Audi A4 Quattro in the workshop for rough idle and check engine light on. Vehicle was scanned and two relevant fault codes P0507 idle control speed too high and P2187 fuel system bank 1 mixture lean at idle. The engine was obviously rough at idle but performed well off idle and had plenty of power on the road. Diagnosis The intake was smoked for leaks all ok, we then temporarily blanked off the breather

Problem ndash Rough Idle andEngine Check Light on

We recently had a 2008 Audi A4 Quattro inthe workshop for rough idle and checkengine light on Vehicle was scanned andtwo relevant fault codes P0507shy idlecontrolshy speed too high and P2187shy fuelsystem bank 1shy mixture lean at idle Theengine was obviously rough at idlebut performed well off idle and had plenty ofpower on the road

DiagnosisThe intake was smoked for leaksshy all ok wethen temporarily blanked off the breather

valve assembly intake and the carsmoothed out straight away Seemed like ano brainer we ordered a new breatherassembly and fitted up only to find noimprovement with the new valve After abit of head scratching it was determined wemay have a problem with the rear crankseal sucking in air and unshybalancing thebreather assembly To verify this weintroduced a small amount of brake cleaninto the bell housing with the enginerunning and the engine instantly smoothedout as it had done previously We alsoapplied a smoke test down the dipstick tubeinto the crankcase with the engine switchedoff and had plumes of smoke out of the bellhousing

SolutionWe removed the transmissionand inspected the rear seal it was foundthe old seal had come unshybonded from theretaining plate We refitted thetransmission and sure enough itwas running sweet once againInterestingly there was no major oil leakagefrom the old seal The codes were clearedand the car was road tested and good to goProblem solved
