Sun Staff Reports Local boaters, officials and business people gathered last Saturday, Aug. 18, to celebrate the opening of Svendsen’s Marine & Industrial Supply, a new facil- ity that represents the merger of two longtime maritime businesses located on Alameda’s north shore. Mayor Trish Spencer was on hand to officially cut the ribbon. Now a part of the Bay Maritime Group, Svendsen’s, formerly located in Alameda Marina, has relocated and reopened. At the new location, the staff has much more room. The shop now stocks a wider array of marine and industrial supply items in a larger warehouse. “The new facility has supplies for boats from the smallest din- ghies all the way up to the fer- ries and tugs plying San Francisco Bay,” said Svendsen’s owner Ron Rowe. “Svendsen’s takes great pride in the individual attention we give to each and every boat owner to provide solutions for their boats.” Part of the operations — fabri- cation and craftsmanship — con- tinues at Svendsen’s Boatyard, Rigging and Metal Works in Point Richmond. At the end of 2016, Bay Marine Corp. announced it would pur- chase Svendsen’s and add it to a portfolio of maritime-related businesses including: Bay Ship & Yacht Co., Bay Machine & Fabrication, Bay Propellor and Bay Design & Engineering (“North Shore Maritime Businesses to Consolidate,” Dec. 6, 2016). “Bay Marine Boatworks began in 1992 as an essential part of the recreational and commercial mari- time communities,” According to its website, “The Bay Marine has completed work for the U.S. Coast Guard, Federal, State, County and City authorities, charter cruise lines, high-performance yachts and recreational boaters in the Bay Area, West Coast and over- seas.” The company is considered a leader in marine propulsion and power systems. Sven Svendsen opened a small boatyard in Alameda in 1963 and built a dedicated clientele. The Svendsen family operated a fully operational boatyard and chan- dlery focused on recreational sail and powerboat owners for 50 years. At the time of Svendsen’s passing in 2013, the facility had grown to become the preeminent boat repair and supply shop on the West Coast. A native of Espergaerde, Denmark, Svendsen “constructed the first Nordic folkboat made of fiberglass in 1975, a move that helped make him famous among Bay Area sailors,” according to his obituary. “The transition from wood to fiberglass helped save the Folkboat class, causing it to grow into one of today’s most-active racing classes in both Europe and on San Francisco Bay.” Svendsen descended from a long line of Danish fishermen and was a notable boatman, but he also Storied Marine Shop Opens in New Location had a penchant for golf. He was known to compete in pro-amateur competitions alongside the likes of Jack Nicklaus and Tiger Woods. “The new store will feature Svendsen’s great service with a warehouse of marine and industrial products unparalleled in Northern California,” said Bill Elliott, President of Bay Maritime Group. The new location is at 2900 Main St. Suite 1900 near the Main Street Ferry Terminal. The stock on hand is being described as “the best, deepest selection of boating gear south of Seattle.” Find out more at svendsens.com.
