I would just like to introduce myself and Mums in the Know. My name is Carrie-Anne and I run a local site called Mums in the Know Salford.

Mums in the Know was created in 2012 by two mums looking for a local online portal where everything happening for them and their families could be found. It started with Mums in the Know Wilmslow, and became so popular that mums in other towns began to get in touch asking for one in their area.

Fast-forward to the present day and Mums in the Know not only has a national page. It’s on course to have 100 local sites by the end of the year, keeping mums across the UK informed about everything happening for them and their families. At Mums in the Know we’re all about positivity. Our aim is to give all our readers the ideas and get up and go to make the most of life in their local vicinity.

I became part of MITK in 2012. I found it was a great way to work from home and look after my poorly son. Working with MITK has given me the opportunity to meet lots of lovely local people, find out about the fab things happening in the area and I can still pick my children up from school at the end of the day.

Whether it’s Ballet, Tap, Modern Jazz, Theatre Craft, Street Dance, Gymnastic Dance, Cheerleading or Musical Theatre, Mariyka’s Dance Studio is a small, friendly place to come and learn, with a great family atmosphere and a 100% examination pass rate.

Mariyka is a Senior Theatre Examiner for the IDTA, with more than 30 years’ experience – over 20 spent teaching in Swinton. A number of students have been with Mariyka since the age of three and are now bringing their own children.

All students are encouraged to take part in annual Christmas and bi-annual full school shows, raising money and awareness for local charity Destination Florida.

Lions ready to come roaring back.

Swinton Lions Rugby League Club is still very much alive and ready to roar back into action in 2015, with their next game away to the London Skolars in Round 3 of the Challenge Cup on Saturday 7th March at 3pm. The league season then starts on Friday 3rd April at 3pm with a home game against North Wales Crusaders.

The club suffered relegation at the end of the 2014 campaign following a league restructuring exercise. But after adding plenty of bite to the squad in the close season, including former Super League giant Jordan James, the Lions are confident of a quick return to the middle tier of English Rugby League.

I was born and bred in Swinton, and after two years away through my partner’s work, we’re now back home. On our return, I began working on MITK Salford, which is already taking off at great speed. The site is already full with ideas for days out, family activities, clubs and classes and much more.

I’m now really looking forward to working with Swinton Square and keeping everyone up to date with what’s on for families in the area.

We sat with Dave, our new centre manager, for 5 minutes. Here’s what we found out...

Tell us a bit about yourself

I’m the new Centre Manager onsite here at Swinton Square. For the previous 5 years, I worked as Operations Manager at Merseyway Shopping Centre, overseeing anything and everything from security, cleaning and health and safety, right up to the yearly Christmas light switch on. The last one attracted 14 thousand visitors. I have a BCSC Diploma in Shopping Centre Management, plus lots of knowledge and experience gained from working in other Shopping Centres.

What made you want to join Swinton Square?

I think overall what drew me to Swinton Square was the fresh set of challenges on offer here, along with the opportunity to continue to contribute to its growth and development into a central hub for the community. I’m looking to come in and make a real difference. With large investments from new tenants like ASDA, things are continuing to look up for the Square, and I’m proud to be part of it all.

What in particular are you hoping to achieve?

This magazine was top of my list! Hopefully it will be first in a long line of issues for Your Square. The reason being, I wanted to give the tenants the opportunity to get more directly involved in promoting themselves and the centre, helping to attract a new audience who can take advantage of all the savings on offer.

We work with residents across Swinton and Pendlebury, making sure they feel fully informed about what’s happening in their area, empowered to have their say in the decisions being made and able to get involved in improving things for themselves.

Community Committee Local Priorities 2015-16:

• Working to increase footfall and improve the vibrancy of Swinton town centre.

• Supporting young people to get engaged in positive activities.

• Maximising the use of green spaces in the neighbourhood.

• Supporting community groups and individuals with growing projects.

It’s all about bringing the community together. There are lots of things happening locally and this is a great way of tying them all together.

How did it all start?
