New Commands for the Command Line Interface and Online Manual Pages

The following VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle commands and corresponding online manual pages have been added:

Command Name Description

qio_recreate

vxstorage_stats

dbed_vmclonedb

dbed_vmsnap

Automatically recreates Quick I/O files after the database is recovered. The command creates all the necessary Quick I/O files before they are restored. The command expects to find a file named mkqio.dat in the directory where the qio_recreate command is run. The mkqio.dat file contains a list of the Quick I/O files used by the database and their sizes. If the mkqio.dat file is not in the directory, you will be prompted to create it using qio_getdbfiles. After creating mkqio.dat, you will be able to run the qio_recreate command successfully.

Prints I/O mapping and statistics about one or more VERITAS File System files. The statistics are recorded only for VxFS files and VxVM volumes. These statistics show I/O activity.

Creates or shuts down a clone database using snapshot volumes from a primary database.

Creates or resynchronizes a snapshot image of an Oracle database. This command also allows you to reverse resynchronize a snapshot image of an Oracle database.

Fixed Issues

Fixed Issues The following VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle fixes are included in this release:

Incident Description

34201 In the previous release, when restoring database files, Quick I/O files were not recreated automatically. This issue is resolved.

34295 Previously, you were not able to roll back a tablespace or datafile to a Storage Checkpoint using the GUI. This has been fixed in this release.

75741 Previously, error messages or informational messages that only allowed you to click OK to continue did not contain a mnemonic. To continue without using a mouse, you were required to press Enter on your keyboard to close the message. With this release, this issue has been corrected.

85155 In the earlier release, some Storage Checkpoint Capacity Planning messages were not internationalized. This issue is fixed in this release.

86431 Earlier, you were required to run the dbed_update command after upgrading to VERITAS Storage Foundation 4.0 for Oracle from a previous release. This allowed you to roll back to a Storage Checkpoint that was created prior to this release. This has been fixed.

86526 When Storage Foundation for Oracle removed a Storage Checkpoint based on your Storage Checkpoint Policy settings, the directory in which the Storage Checkpoint resided was not removed. This issue has been fixed in this release.

87408 In the previous release, if you tried to shut down the database in the GUI and the operation failed, the tablespaces for that database appeared to be offline. You were required to perform a rescan of the database or the tablespaces. This issue has been fixed.

104310 Debugging messages would appear in the VEA console when Storage Checkpoint related-operations were performed from the GUI. These debugging message have been removed.

104315 Selecting Resync Repository to refresh the GUI after dropping a database would result in unexpected error messages. This has been fixed.

8 VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle Release Notes

Known Issues

Incident Description

110282 If you attempted to roll back an up-and-running database to an online Storage Checkpoint, the GUI would display an incorrect message stating that file or tablespace Storage Rollback options are available. This message has been corrected.

Known Issues ◆ If you create an Oracle instance using the spfile option, you must run the

dbed_update command before you can successfully perform any Storage Checkpoint or Database FlashSnap functions.

◆ When Oracle Disk Manager (ODM) is enabled for an Oracle instance, you cannot back up the database to a VxFS file system directly using RMAN (Oracle Bug reference number 238523). However, you can back up to a tape or JFS file system using RMAN. This is a Known Issue on Oracle9i Release 2 only.

If you are running Oracle9i Release 2 and using RMAN to perform “disk to disk” backup, you must install the Oracle patch set that includes the fix to this problem.

Without installing the Oracle patch set, you can backup to a VxFS file system only if you are using one of the SBT implementations, such as VERITAS NetBackup. In this scenario, the backup image files are managed by VERITAS NetBackup’s Media Manager.

◆ The manual pages for qio_convertdbfiles and qio_getdbfiles are identical. For qio_convertdbfiles, please refer to the manual page for qio_getdbfiles.

◆ The EMC Symmetrix VAIL provider can dump core if the following conditions occur:

◆ A Symmetrix device (symdev=xyz) has two or more bindings.

◆ The host running the EMC Symmetrix VAIL provider has multi-pathed access to the device through all the Symmetrix ports it is bound to (for example, the host's adapters are connected to all the ports the device is bound to and the device is masked to the host appropriately. So, if there are 'n' bindings on the device, the host sees 'n' different OS handles for the same device).

◆ If the principal OS handle to the device (“OSHandle#1”) is a substring of the other n-1 OS handles to the device (“OSHandle#2,” “OSHandle#3”...”OSHandle#n”).

“OSHandle#1” is the OS handle to the device as reported by symdev show xyz, displayed against “Device Physical Name.” “OSHandle#2,” “OSHandle#3,” ..”OSHandle#n” are the other OS handles to the device as shown by symdev show xyz, displayed under “Front Director Paths.”

VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle Release Notes 9

Known Issues

------------------------------------------------------------------

----- --------- ---------- -------- ---------

------------------------------------------------------------------

If the EMC Symmetrix provider cores, do one of the following. The end objective is to have at least one OS handle that violates the substring condition or to have a binding that is not visible to the host:

◆ Create an additional binding on the Symmetrix device xyz, such that the device is not visible to the host running the EMC Symmetrix VAIL provider. Either of the following suffices:

◆ The host is not connected to the port newly bound to

◆ The device is not masked to the host through the port newly bound to

◆ Modify one of the existing bindings, such that the OS handle does not remain a superstring of OSHandle#1. Do one of the following:

◆ Unmask the device from the host for that port

◆ Change the SCSI mappings such that the device is visible to the host as a OS handle that is not a superstring of OSHandle#1.

Example:

In the example below, OSHandle#1 = /dev/rhdisk3, OSHandle#2 = /dev/rhdisk30. OSHandle#1 is a substring of OSHandle#2

10 VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle Release Notes

Known Issues

◆ Following are the known issues in this release:

Incident Description

none If you choose to install VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle using installp, you must install the VRTSveki package separately or use installp with the -g option.

none When database files or control files consist of VxFS files and non-VxFS files, the dbed_vmchecksnap command does not read the configuration properly. When you run the dbed_vmchecksnap command in a mixed environment, the following error messages are displayed:

DBED4421: ERROR: File ufs is not on a vxfs file system. DBED5643: ERROR: An error occurred while finding device from file list. /dev/vx/dsk/proddg/datavol /usr1/oracle/rw/DATA proddg vxfs rw,suid,delaylog,largefiles,qio,ioerror=mwdisable,dev2c80e9

none If you install the product packages using the installation script, but do not reboot, and then require to remove the packages using the deinstallation script, removal of the VRTSodm and VRTSvxfs packages may fail due to the device being busy. If this happens, exit from the deinstallation script and use the installp -u command to uninstall the packages.

none On a Japanese desktop, VEA may incorrectly display system fonts. Japanese characters may not be properly displayed when you select the non-default font for the VEA GUI.

32726 You cannot create a Storage Checkpoint of a database located on a mounted Storage Checkpoint.

33903 If a mount point is a symbolic link, the space monitoring agent may fail.

VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle Release Notes 11

Known Issues

Incident Description

34106 Converting a Quick I/O file to a regular file will fail if you created a Quick I/O file for an Oracle datafile that has a smaller size. Oracle generates an error if the size of the regular file is not a multiple of the 2 K database block size (db_block_size). The error message displayed is similar to the following:

*** 2002-08-22 15:11:02.850

*** SESSION ID:(2.1) 2002-08-22 15:11:02.847

ORA-01157: cannot identify/lock data file 51 - see DBWR trace file

ORA-01110: data file 51:'/d05/oradata/rmdb/bill13_data.dbf'

ORA-27046: file size is not a multiple of logical block size

Additional information: 1

To work around this problem, extend the Quick I/O file such that the size is a multiple of both the file system block size and the database block size (db_block_size)

The database will now start as expected.

34387 If 200 or more files reside in the /dev/rdsk directory, the dbed_filestat command may take a long time to display statistic information.

34433 VxFS disk layouts Version 5 and earlier are not supported with Storage Checkpoints.

If you attempt to retrieve quota information for a Storage Checkpoint in Version 5 or earlier, a message similar to the following displays:

Known Issues

Incident Description

34446 VERITAS Enterprise Administrator and the VxDBA menu utility do not display tablespace information when the v$table column names are changed.

34570 The Database FlashSnap features does not support RAID-5 volumes.

41192 Depending on what you have highlighted in the object tree in the GUI, some tool bar icons are truncated and some are not visible. If this happens, use the menu bar to access the operation you want to execute. This will be fixed in a future release.

87008 If you try to resynchronize the repository using the GUI on a database that has been shut down, you will receive the following error message:

DBED3141: ERROR: Oracle instance $v1 is not running.

The error message is incorrect and should be similar to the following:

DBED3141: ERROR: Oracle instance instance_name is not running.

where instance_name is the name of the Oracle database instance.

105379 Connecting to the localhost on an AIX machine can take a few minutes. This causes a delay and affects the performance of some functions.

To work around this issue, in the file /etc/netsvc.conf insert the following line, hosts = local, nis, bind

Known Issues

Incident Description

123233 Under normal circumstances, a clean-up routine is automatically executed if dbed_vmsnap fails to create a snapshot. However, if dbed_vmsnap fails to create a snapshot because a connection cannot be established with the VEA service (vxsvc), the clean up routine is not executed.

If dbed_vmsnap fails because it cannot connect to the VEA service, the following error message will appear:

Failed to connect to local object bus server.

In this event, you must manually recover the snapshot volumes by joining the split disk group back with the primary disk group and resynchronizing it with the primary database.

To manually recover the snapshot volumes:

1. If the primary database is in backup mode, take it out of backup mode.

2. If the snapshot disk group is split, join it back to the primary disk group: # vxdg join snapshot_diskgroup primary_diskgroup

3. Recover the snapshot volumes: # vxrecover -g primary_diskgroup -m snapshot_volume

4. Reattach every snapshot volume back to its original volume: # vxsnap -g primary_diskgroup reattach snapshot_volumes source=original_volume

5. After the snapshot volumes have been synchronized, re-run the dbed_vmsnap command using the -F option.

125578 You cannot remove a volume after the storage mapping PL/SQL procedure is run on a datafile.

Even though the contents of map_element are appropriate, the tablespace is dropped and the file system is unmounted. The database is not using any files residing on this file system. And, the removal of the volume using vxassist fails.

After storage mapping, perform the following steps to remove a volume:

1. Set file_mapping to false. # alter system set file_mapping=false

2. Make sure that the fmon process is not running. # ps -fu oracle | grep fmon

3. Run fuser on file system and make sure that no process is attached to the file system. # fuser -c /tbs1

4. Unmount the file system. # umount /tbs1

5. Remove the volume using vxassist. # vxassist -g testdg remove volume tbs1

Known Issues

Incident Description

129887 VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle does not support Japanese datafiles, names, and tablespace names. Also, Japanese SID for clone database when using dbed_clonedb and dbed_vmclonedb is not supported.

217003 If you install VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle and VERITAS Storage Foundation for DB2 on the same machine using an alternative method of installation (installation methods other than the VERITAS product installer or the installation script), you will receive multiple warning messages. It is safe to ignore these warning messages.

217441 To upgrade to VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle 4.0 from a previous version, using an alternative method, before starting upgrade perform the following steps:

1. Stop the VEA service manually using the following command: # /etc/rc.d/rc2.d/K50isisd

2. Install the VRTSveki package manually before installing the rest of the packages. # installp -acXd VRTSveki.bff VRTSveki

3. Proceed with the SMIT installation.

218987 Rescanning of the Oracle database instance does not work via the GUI. When the Oracle database instance is started and a Rescan operation is performed from the GUI, nothing happens. The Confirmation dialog is displayed immediately and the instance appears to be offline.

219607 You cannot use the Page Update or Print function in the GUI; using either of these functions results in an error.

221891 In the Topology/Statistics window of the GUI, the units for the Offset column are incorrectly labeled as KB or MB. The units refer to sectors, not bytes.

Software Notes

Supporting zero offset volumes To make VxVM raw volumes compatible with LVM, Oracle skipped the first 4 KB of VxVM raw volume. The Oracle header block started at an offset of 4 KB of the raw volume. For databases that have a db_block_size larger than 4 KB, this caused misaligned I/O at the stripe boundary of a striped volume. For example, for a database with db_block_size of 16 KB, a raw volume with stripe layout and stripe width 32 KB, every other db_block spanned two LUNS/disks.

To solve the misaligned I/O issue, AIX introduced a new volume with devsubtype, DS_LVZ, for Oracle 9iR2. These volumes are 'z' type LVM volumes. Oracle 9iR2 and later recognize the 'z' volumes and do not skip the first 4 KB in the volume.

VxVM was also enhanced and introduced a volume with devsubtype, DS_VMZ, for Oracle 9iR2. These volumes are 'o' type VxVM volumes. Oracle is now enhancing 9iR2 and 10g to recognize the 'o' VxVM volumes for which a patch (from Oracle) is required. The reference bug number for this Oracle patch is 3712203.

For more information about migrating to the 'o' type VxVM raw volumes, please contact VERITAS Customer Support and refer to incident 223668.

▼ To convert regular raw LVM Oracle datafiles to regular VxVM raw volumes

Copy the data using the dd command. For example,

# /usr/bin/dd if=/dev/lvm_raw_volume of=/dev/vx/oradg/raw_volbs=4k skip=1 seek=1

▼ To convert 'z' raw LVM Oracle datafiles to regular VxVM raw volumes

Skip the first 4 KB on VxVM and then copy the data. For example,

# /usr/bin/dd if=/dev/lvm_raw_volume of=/dev/vx/oradg/raw_volbs=4k seek=1

Copying Oracle files under VxFS file system to JFS file system If you use cp, mv, or cpio to copy or move a file with extent attributes from a VxFS to a JFS or JFS2 file system, the file is copied to the target without preserving the extent attributes of the source file.

Extent attributes can be preserved when the source and target files are both in VxFS file systems. On AIX, extent attributes are supported attributes with files in VxFS file systems only.

16 VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle Release Notes

Software Notes

The following is an example of using the cp command to copy a VxFS file system file (db01.f on file system /oradata) to a target non-VxFS file system (/bkup):

# cp /oradata/db01.f /bkup/db01.f

Even though the file with extent attributes is copied or moved to the target non-VxFS file system, the cp, mv, or cpio commands display the following output:

cp: 0653-445 can not maintain extent attributes for db01.f

To avoid this output, which is not an error message, use the -E ignore option with cp, mv, or cpio commands. For example,

# cp -E ignore /oradata/db01.f /bkup/db01.f

Oracle Disk Manager Because Oracle Disk Manager uses the Quick I/O driver to perform asynchronous I/O, do not turn off the default Quick I/O mount option.

Upgrading to VERITAS Storage Foundation for Oracle 4.0 with the VVR license enabled

If you are upgrading to VERITAS Storage Foundation 4.0 for Oracle from a previous version of VERITAS Database Edition for Oracle with the VVR license enabled, you are required to install the latest patch for VM/VVR for AIX 1.2. Please contact customer support for the latest patch.

dbed_vmclonedb command and tempfiles Previously, when a clone database was brought up, the tempfiles were not created. As a result, operations requiring a temporary tablespace (TEMP) would fail. This issue has been fixed. Now, when a clone database is recovered and opened, the tempfiles are added if they were residing on the snapshot volumes.

If, however, the tempfiles were not residing on the same filesystems as the datafiles, the underlying volumes were not included in the snapshot. In this case, a warning message is issued and no tempfiles are added because no storage is provided by the snapshot where the tempfiles could reside.

In this scenario, you must add the tempfiles as needed. A script named add_tf.$ORACLE_SID.sql is provided in the /tmp directory for the purpose of recreating Oracle tempfiles. This script contains the SQL*Plus commands to recreate the missing tempfiles.
