This was a stop that we didn’t plan on making but it we were glad we stopped. Located just down the street from Krakus Market, it is the perfect location for authentic Polish cuisine. The restaurant started in 1970 and quickly became a local hot spot. About 10 years ago the current owner took over, keeping with the traditional theme. The current owner, Krystyna Florczak, was actually born in Poland. The name Syrenka is actually from the original owners and it is the crest of Warsaw. Syrenka means mermaid and it is a symbol of Warsaw. They offer a lot of authentic Polish food, such as pierogi, stuffed cabbage, and many more. 3173 Richmond St.

Stop #2: Krakus Market

My second stop on my Polish heritage tour is Krakus Market. Krakus Market claims to be the biggest Polish Market in the northeast United States. It all started in 1987 when it was just a small local Polish deli. In the 1960’s, Franciszek Gardyasz and son Zenon started Krakus Market with the recipes that they had brought from Poland. Zenon and his wife, Elzbieta, moved the deli to Port Richmond, which is heavily populated with Polish people. Their business was booming and by 1994 they had to move to a larger location. Luckily for the locals it only moved down the street. This new location was way bigger than the deli. They wanted to keep the same feel so they incorporated the deli in the back and they kept all the original recipes and techniques to keep everything as authentic as possible
