Of Deep Breaths and Deeper Thoughts:
It’s a busy world. More often than not, we are “forced” by our situations to be doing multiple things at
the same time. We could be writing/conceptualizing for different due papers at once, dealing with person-
al or even physical issues and problems while completing career/school responsibilities – the list seems end-
less. But in the rush to accomplish necessary tasks, you may find yourself losing your connection with the
present moment—missing out on what you’re doing and how you’re feeling.
Mindfulness is the practice of purposely focusing your attention on the present moment—and ac-
cepting it without judgment. Mindfulness is now being examined scientifically and has been found to be a
key element in stress reduction and overall happiness.
How does mindfulness work?
Some experts believe that mindfulness works, in part, by helping people to accept their experienc-
es—including painful emotions—rather than react to them with aversion and avoidance.
It has become increasingly common for mindfulness meditation to be combined with psychotherapy,
especially cognitive behavioral therapy. This development makes good sense, since both meditation and
cognitive behavioral therapy share the common goal of helping people gain perspective on irrational,
maladaptive, and self-defeating thoughts.
What are the benefits of mindfulness?
Professor emeritus Jon Kabat-Zinn, founder and former director of the Stress Reduction Clinic at the
University of Massachusetts Medical Center, helped to bring the practice of mindfulness meditation into
mainstream medicine and demonstrated that practicing mindfulness can bring improvements in both phys-
ical and psychological symptoms as well as positive changes in health, attitudes, and behaviors.
Mindfulness improves well-being. By focusing on the here and now, many people who practice mind-
fulness find that they are less likely to get caught up in worries about the future or regrets over the past, are
less preoccupied with concerns about success and self-esteem, and are better able to form deep connec-
tions with others.
Mindfulness improves physical health. Scientists have discovered that mindfulness techniques help
improve physical health in a number of ways. Mindfulness can: help relieve stress, treat heart disease, lower
blood pressure, reduce chronic pain, improve sleep, and alleviate gastrointestinal difficulties.
Mindfulness improves mental health. In recent years, psychotherapists have turned to mindfulness
meditation as an important element in the treatment of a number of problems, including: depression, sub-
stance abuse, eating disorders, couples’ conflicts, anxiety disorders, and obsessive-compulsive disorder.
It isn’t always easy to be open and accepting of the present moment without being reminded of the
past or without worrying for the future. We are human, after all. However, if simple deep breathing exercises
and meditation activities could help us be at our best in the present, then what is stopping us to live?
Of Deep Breaths and Deeper Thoughts:
The First Holy Communion for Fourth Grade Roman Catholic students will be held on
November 25 (Monday) at the Parish Church of the Holy Trinity. All students and parents are
expected to be there before 8:30 AM for the ceremonies will be starting at 9:00 AM and will end by
10:30 AM.
It will not only be Grade 4 Roman Catholic students who are expected to come on this day.
Grades 3, 5, and 6 Roman Catholic students shall also attend and witness the ceremony.
For the non-Catholic students from Grades 3-6, they are to report to school on this day to do enhancement exercises in Reading and Math. Attendance will be checked and will be counted in
the Perfect Attendance award.
The Holy Communion or the Lord's Supper (among other names) is a Christian rite that is
considered a sacrament in most churches and an ordinance in others. Holy Communion is the
receiving of Jesus Christ in the sacrament of the Holy Eucharist.

In preparation for the upcoming Advent Wreath and Christmas Tree Lighting
Ceremonies, all students are expected to prepare a Christmas tree trimming that
will be hung on the tree. These trimmings shall be made out of popsicle sticks
and must adhere to the assigned themes per class. The class advisers will be an-
nouncing the design assigned to their respective classes, so just look out for that!
Valiant Knights, let us all light up our second home this Christmas season!
‘Tis the season, again!
Secret Santa is a Western Christmas tradition in
which members of a group or community are
randomly assigned a person to whom they will
give a gift. The identity of the gift-giver is not to be
revealed (thus its name!).
The school’s Christmas party will be on December
17, 2019. As part of the tradition, the students will
be having a Secret Santa. However, participating
in the activity is
NOT a requirement.
Please indicate in the reply slip if you would like
your child to be part of the exchange gift or not.
If ever your child will participate, the following are
the maximum cost of the gifts to be given in
particular levels:
Pre-School - Grade 2 Php 200.00
Grade 3 - SHS Php 300.00
Parents/guardians of Valiant Knights! Would you like to help the school in its marketing efforts? If so, you now can by posting
tarpaulins on your houses and/or businesses. If you are interested, please indicate in the reply slip of this SP Bulletin issue.
Thank you!

GratiTuesday There are so many things to be grateful for. Sometimes, with the tedious tasks and fast-paced events that we experience, we tend to overlook them.
Now, in the efforts to keep all Valiant Knights to keep a grateful heart above all, the school is launching GRATITUESDAY. Every Tuesday starting next week, the following ac-tivities will be done:
Gratitude Wall
GratiTuesday FB Prompts (What are you most grateful for?)
GratiTuesday Lobby Testimonials
(per class)
Diary Reflections on Gratitude
Remember: there is a quiet joy in being thankful!

A s you may already know, the school had recently launched its
campaign promoting Mindfulness to the school community. In
the past months, we have taken some steps to introduce this
practice (way of life), first, to parents last October, and then to
the teachers during the past break, and just this past week, to the students.
These are all done in recognition of the fact that our mental health is just as
important as our physical health.
In the past activities, we have shared some breathing techniques that
may facilitate mindfulness. But, there is more than one way to practice
mindfulness. The goal of any mindfulness technique is to achieve a state of
alert, focused relaxation by deliberately paying attention to thoughts and
sensations without judgment. This allows the mind to refocus on the present
moment.
Basic mindfulness meditation. Sit quietly and focus on your natural breath-
ing or on a word or “mantra” that you repeat silently. Allow thoughts to
come and go without judgment and return to your focus on breath or man-
tra.
Body sensations. Notice subtle body sensations such as an itch or tingling
without judgment and let them pass. Notice each part of your body in suc-
cession from head to toe.
Sensory. Notice sights, sounds, smells, tastes, and touches. Name them
“sight,” “sound,” “smell,” “taste,” or “touch” without judgment and let them
go.
Emotions. Allow emotions to be present without judgment. Practice a
steady and relaxed naming of emotions: “joy,” “anger,” “frustration.” Ac-
cept the presence of the emotions without judgment and let them go.
Urge surfing. Cope with cravings (for addictive substances or behaviors)
and allow them to pass. Notice how your body feels as the craving enters.
Replace the wish for the craving to go away with the certain knowledge
that it will subside.
