Stonewall Jackson High School Senior Awards Newsletter 2020
Hello fellow Raiders, Every May, Stonewall Jackson High School gathers together to acknowledge our many achievements and award our top seniors for their efforts throughout the year and their high school career. It is a time of community and celebration. This year, however, we find ourselves facing new challenges: a truncated school year, social distancing, online learning, and an uncertain future. It often feels like there are more questions than answers. Here at SJ though, we are optimistic and confident about what lies ahead because of the keen minds and capable hands of the stewards of our future. The students featured in this newsletter - and all of our Raiders - are the key players of a bright tomorrow. Parents and guardians - thank you for sharing your children with us. Your love and support is so crucial to their success, and we recognize the sacrifices you make so their dreams can become a reality. Teachers - it is your hard work and dedication that help our students envision the many possible futures ahead. You inspire them and guide them. Seniors - we are so proud of you and your grit. Never let it be said that the path was easy or that you never had doubts. What makes you excellent is how you respond to challenges. The awards you have earned are not for the moments when learning came effortlessly, but for all the times you persevered when things got hard. We recognize and applaud your excellence! We wish we could be together to celebrate your accomplishments with you and your family, and we wish you all the best in wherever your journey takes you next. Stay safe, stay curious, and remember that you are all Stonewall Strong.

She has shown patience and flexibility and a willingness to grow in all of her art this year. Cristina Chavez Best use of Iconography and Symbolism Award Cristy chose to represent the goddess Aphrodite for her mythology mask. She read a lot about her goddess and studied her attributes. Her drawings demonstrate Cristy's willingness to push herself to create a work of art that unified, aesthetically very pleasing, and extremely interesting. Nancy Bermudez Most Detail Oriented- Art I Although Nancy came to Art I as a senior, it's obvious that she loves to draw and paint. Her Prismacolor drawing was a labor of love and the rich colors along with the carefully rendered detail made it one of the best examples of the use of that medium. Adia Shannahan Creativity and Craftsmanship Award- Art IV AJ brings an abundance of skill, enthusiasm, and creativity to her work. She loves the creative process, especially the planning. Her detailed sketches and preliminary drawings add a robustness to her final works. He is such a dedicated and hard-working student that will see success in life. He is well deserving of this accolade and there will be many more in his lifetime. Joshua Chilcote The Tech Ed Award Each year we try to select a student that demonstrates exceptional school work and transcends the pathways we set for most students. It's often reserved for students that take every Tech Ed class we offer, but this year we selected a student that provided us with a first. Josh not only took every engineering class, and participated in Seaperch all four years, and VEX robotics, but this year he was our first student to be selected for the T.A.L.E.N.T. apprentice program at Lockheed Martin in Manassas. He took everything we could teach him, and successfully applied it to this exclusive work learning experience. We are so proud of him. For this reason, he is awarded the coveted Tech Ed Award for 2020.

IB PROGRAMME AWARDS
IB Diploma Programme
Layan Wahdan IB Theory of Knowledge Student of the Year As a thoughtful and purposeful inquiry into different ways of knowing, and into different kinds of knowledge, TOK is composed almost entirely of questions. Layan has fulfilled both the letter and the spirit of the Theory of Knowledge course - theorizing about knowledge, asking unanswerable questions, and exploring implications. She has been philosopher, neuroscientist, and literary critic. She is inspired by both the humanities and the sciences; she inspires others to "dwell in possibility." IB Career-Related Programme Miguel Zepeda Personal and Professional Skills Student of the Year While Miguel's academic achievement is indeed noteworthy, I have also been impressed by Miguel's work ethic and drive. Miguel has been front and center in many of the initiatives that are moving student life forward at our school. His fellow group members trust Miguel implicitly and have entrusted the responsibility of many organization endeavors and programs to him. This is no way typical but is a testament to the character and drive of this individual. To recognize his many contributions and the quality of his work, Miguel earned the PPS student of the year award. Creativity, Action and Service Elizabeth Forbes IB CAS Student of the Year No student in my career has embodied the spirit of CAS quite like Elizabeth Forbes. CAS is not just something she does but has become central to who she is. She consistently looks for ways to serve others and finds joy and self-fulfillment in being a risk-taker. From ice-skating, to sewing and painting, to throwing an impromptu mermaid party because people needed a smile - Elizabeth has enriched her life and the lives of those around her with her CAS. I have no doubts that she is a lifelong learner and she has inspired me all year.
