The Arch family has been delivering milk in Coventry and the surroundingareas for more than 100 years. My great-grandfather started delivering milkin 1874. My father, Derek Arch, is officially the oldest milkman in Englandand is still delivering to this day at 87 years old.

We support the farmers by buying our milk from Cotteswold Dairies, who paya fair price to their farmers, some of whom have been supplying CotteswoldDairies for over 50 years. The milk is collected within a 70 mile radius of thedairy in Tewkesbury.

he Orchard Group would like to thank all those who attendedStoneleigh Village Club back in October for our quiz night as well asthose who helped make it yet another successful and entertaining

event! We also hope that those of you who tried our prototype Stoneleighcider found it a pleasant experience.

It is a tradition at this time of year to reflect on the past as well as considerpossibilities for the future, which are best described in an article that hasrecently been written for the December edition of the Warwick NaturalHistory Newsletter.

Stoneleigh Community Orchard started as a project in 2011 and offered ameans of achieving several objectives. The principal objective was to act asa community resource and focus. Stoneleigh, in common with many othervillages throughout the country, has seen a gradual erosion of resourcessuch as village shops, garages, pubs etc. and so it was the intention of thisproject to, in a small way, reverse that trend and offer the local communitya stake in a natural resource that should ultimately be self-sustaining as wellas produce an area of beauty and recreation. It has also been a lot of funto work upon. The underlying theme of the orchard is based upon theproduction of cider and perry, with trees chosen to reflect this bias andvarieties such as Dabinett, Tom Putt and Yarlington Mill originating from theWest Country, mixed in with more local varieties such as Wyken Pippinnamed after an area in nearby Coventry. Warwickshire doesn’t have atradition of cider apple orchards but, to our astonishment, the trees havethrived along the river valley that runs through the village and are alreadyproducing a bountiful harvest. We are now in the process of creating a smallcottage industry based on cider production, with the intention of theorchard paying its way in the world as well as helping to meet anotherobjective of creating a wild flower area to complement the trees. Eachyear, the Orchard Group who manage the orchard seem to be on thethreshold of achieving something new. This year, we intend to broaden the

orchard to encompass the entire field, which will involve the planting offurther cider apple trees in December. A Stoneleigh cider is also close tocompletion!

Given the above, we hope that those of you who have the time and theinterest in this project come down to the meadow on the morning ofSaturday 5th December for a tree planting event aimed at incrementing theorchard and helping to create an area that we, as a community, can beproud of.

The orchard friends’ subscriptions comes up for renewal at the start of thenew year. Renewals of £10 can be made to Pete Freeman as Chairman orto Richard Hancox as Treasurer. Cheques should be made payable toStoneleigh Village Community Orchard. However, why not become a long-term friend and set up a direct debit?

Finally, the group would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and aHappy New Year.

POSADA - Making Roomfor Jesus

Priest in Charge of Stoneleigh and Ashow

s the Christmas season is upon us, many of us are making ourhomes festive with decorations as well as preparing and openingour homes to receive visitors as families, friends and neighbours

get together. I’d like to invite you to share your hospitality a little differentlyin a Posada project, which I hope will enhance this often busy season for youand our communities, and will give a focus to remembering the Christmasstory of Jesus.

Posada is a Spanish word meaning ‘inn’. Posada celebrations originated inMexico where young people, dressed as Mary and Joseph, travelled fromhouse to house, telling people about the imminent arrival of Jesus andasking for a room for the night. At each home, they shared the Christmasstory and joined in worship with their host family. On Christmas Eve, theywould visit the local church to re-enact the nativity and place figures ofMary and Joseph in a crib.

The modern day Posada is based on this concept and encourages us to givea home to the nativity figures of Mary and Joseph for a night. Thissymbolises making room for Jesus in our hearts, homes and communities. Each night during Advent, it is hoped that the figures will visit a differenthouse in our communities. Each host chooses who to contact and pass thenativity set on to for the next night.

On Advent Sunday, 29th November, the Stoneleigh crib set will begin itsjourney at the 11.00am all-age service, and the Ashow crib set will beginits journey at the 4.00pm Advent carol service.

Each nativity set will go home with someone from church who will thendecide who to contact and take the figures to on the next day. The figureswill arrive with:

● An Advent candle to light long enough to burn down to the next number;

● A notebook in which to log where the crib set has been. This could besimply your name and address, but may include who was involved, aphotograph, your own thoughts, conversation about the meaning ofChristmas, and prayers. If you use email, please send one to me [email protected] and I will remember you in my prayersthat night too.

● A prayer card. If you have time, visitors and receivers of the set couldshare a drink together (anything from a cup of tea to mulled wine!)before sharing the prayer card.

● A bag of glow-in-the-dark stars. Please keep one star of wonder anduse it to help you continue thinking and praying about the story of Jesusand the meaning of Christmas. If you are able to join us at the cribservice at 5.00pm on Christmas Eve in Stoneleigh Church, bring it withyou. It should look great to see them all glowing in church! You arewelcome to keep your star as a reminder that Jesus’ birth in Bethlehemhas lasting meaning for the whole of our lives and there is always morefor us to wonder at when we think about God coming to us and how wereceive and welcome him.

Happy Christmas!

God bless.

previous year’s issues and to discuss any policy matters, as well as toapprove the accounts and welcome two new editors, Jane Taylor and BillCrofts. If any reader wishes to make comments on any aspect of the News, please get in touch with me before the meeting on 024 7641 4271 [email protected].

I would like to place on public record my appreciation of the efforts of alleditors and distributors who have ensured that the News has appeared asplanned throughout the year, and to Clive Watson, our Treasurer, whosecareful stewardship and gentle soliciting of voluntary contributions hasensured that our accounts remain in the black.

This year, I wish to convey particular thanks to David Vaughan who has beenan editor for many years and who is retiring from the editorial team. Withenthusiasm and efficiency, he met the considerable challenge oftransferring from the original ‘cut and paste’ method of News production tothe desktop publishing system now used. He has been a consistentlysupportive and engaged member of the team and we shall miss him, although he will continue to assist Jean with distribution.

e had the best ever turn out for our last film night on Friday 13th

November, when we showed the delightful film Paddington. Thanks to Jane and her team for organising and to everyone

who came.

The church had an autumn clean last month. A team of volunteers set aboutinside with their cleaners, dusters and polish. A few days later, others setabout the churchyard, adding some extra pairs of hands to the regulargardening team. Some were so keen to help that they took part in both!Thank you all for helping. We now have neat edges to the grass and prunedrose beds, with the smell of polish as you enter the church showing ourvisitors that it is a well-cared-for place.

It was this time last year that we reported we had finalised our first roundapplication to Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant to enable us to repair theroof and stonework. Having been granted the first stage in March, we arenow nearly ready to submit the second stage application in the New Year.

It is a long and drawn out process and, whilst Ian Smith has been workingwith the architects on the ‘building’ aspect, Niki Molyneux and others areputting together all the information for the ‘community aspect’. TheHeritage Lottery are keen, like us, to hear everyone’s views about what youthink of the building which sits in the heart of the village. Have you everconsidered how you felt about the church building and community? Do yousee it as an essential part of villagelife, a place of worship or a historicmonument to be preserved forfuture generations? We value yourview and are interested to knowyour thoughts. In the New Year, wewill be bringing a questionnaire toevery home in the parish to give youa chance to have your say. We hopeyou will find time to fill it in.

any thanks are due for the hard work put in by the “willingvolunteers” who turned up on the morning of 31st October.Work involved pruning flower beds, edging paths, cutting back

overgrown brambles and trees, and removing ivy creeper, all of which haveimproved the general appearance ready for spring. The working partyincluded Sarah Ballinger, Quentin Compton-Bishop, Tim and PatrickSawdon, Peter and Jackie Sibley, Ian and Gill Smith, and Clive Watson.Thank you all.

Situation VacantAs the years go by, some of the regular mowing team retire. So for 2016,“apprentices” (of any age) are required please to assist either on a regularweekly basis during the mowing season or as standby volunteers to coverholidays taken by regular mowers. nce again, my very sincere thanks to all who donated sogenerously this year. Despite our having lost several sales outletsin 2015, our total came to £3,017.25, not far short of last year’s

collection. The children of Finham Primary School came up trumps againwith a marvellous collection of £319, and I should like to say a special thankyou to the lady at the NFU offices who boosted their poppy salesenormously by baking cakes as an incentive to buy!

Thank you, too, to all who collected “house-to-house” and to the diligentteam who help every year to count the money.

hanks to Martin Smith and Anthony Bianco, StAG has submittedevidence on AP4. We continue to campaign for the preservation ofStoneleigh as a medieval village, especially Stare Bridge which will

be badly affected by HS2. Stare Bridge was featured in a recent BBC NewsEngland Online article which highlighted the damage that HS2 will do tomany ancient monuments and woodlands along the route.

StAG and the Parish Council have strongly opposed the proposed use of theB4115 as a ‘trucking route’ and the use of Stoneleigh Bridge for any trafficassociated with the building of HS2.

Of great significance is the recent belated recognition by HS2 Ltd that an‘enhanced junction’ (road widening or a roundabout) is needed at thejunction of the A46 and Stoneleigh Road and that this should be part of theoverall plan in this area. However, as yet such a junction is unfunded by HS2Ltd, but it has the support of Coventry City Council, Warwickshire CountyCouncil, Highways England, Jeremy Wright MP and, of course, the ParishCouncil and StAG. Negotiations about this and other necessary works alongthe route are ongoing.

Thanks are due to all those who have worked so hard through numerousmeetings and negotiations to get to this point.

It is expected that HS2 will feature in the Chancellor of the Exchequer’sforthcoming Autumn Statement. The Cubbington Pear Tree, threatened byHS2, has won the Woodland Trust's public vote for England's Tree of the Year.

ince last month’s issue, we have been helped almost over the lineby further contributions from the Parish Council and offers fromother bodies, and I have been touched by individual donations

from residents. Thank you all very much indeed. The money will beadministered and overseen by the Parish Council, but will be ring-fenced sothat it can only be used for the defibrillator.

To give familiarity with the device and withCPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation),West Midlands Ambulance Service willtrain up to 12 of us free of charge. Ideally, those will be spread through the villageand the surrounding areas: Stareton,Stoneleigh Park, the Abbey and generally.

Will you be one of them?

In addition, Bubbenhall have fourCommunity First Responders: volunteerswho have more than just the basic trainingand can give much broader-basedemergency assistance. To save vitalminutes and seconds in an emergency, each is equipped with a defibrillator.

Will you be a Community First Responder for Stoneleigh?

I look forward to hearing from you. Please contact me on 07785 284482 orat [email protected].
