ROOM 115 – CLASS NEWSWHAT HAVE WE BEEN UP TO?

This week in math we have focused on

fractions. Students learned about mixed

numbers and improper fractions. Students

should be able to convert back and forth

between those two forms. We solved additionand subtraction problems involving mixed

numbers and also learned how to find equivalent

fractions. Next week we will learn about

simplifying, or reducing fractions, then adding

and subtracting fractions with unlike

denominators!

In our current IB planner, students are

focusing their inquiry on Agents of Change. The

central idea of this planner is that individuals

have made contributions through language,

science, and the arts. This week students worked

hard on finishing and editing rough drafts.

Several students were able to finish typing their

final drafts in class. Final drafts are due on

Monday. Students will be giving their

presentations on Tuesday through Thursday. We

also spent some time this week watching sample

presentations from previous years.

Our class enjoyed the special treat of

an art demonstration by Amelia’s

grandmother, Edie Abnet, a very talented

artist. She drew and painted an amazing

portrait of our entire class! I hope you will

have an opportunity to see this beautiful piece

of art. In the next few weeks, Edie will return

to guide the students through drawing and

painting self-portraits. Next week, we will also

have a watercolor art lesson from Kyle (WBL

Center for the Arts) and visit Sunrise Park to

learn about music options for 6th

grade. Have a

great weekend!
