Stone makes a home
April 2014
Taking a long-term view…
Denham Limestone vintaged page 36
Five years is no time at all in the life of natural stone, but our fifth Ca’ Pietra
Collection shows that, as a company, we are here to stay. We’ve grown, too.
From providing a select few products in our early days, we now have a
comprehensive range of limestone, travertine, slate and sandstone.
Given the choice, we know that almost everyone would include some natural
stone in their home improvement project – whether that’s some floor tiles in
the bathroom through to the full treatment… floors, walls, surfaces and
fixtures.
So that’s been our mission – to give you the choice, by making really high-
quality natural stone available, affordable and simple to buy.
We hope you find something in the Ca’ Pietra 2014 Collection for you. There’s
on-trend grey stones in these pages; large slabs for dramatic statements; the
extraordinary colours and textures of our new Baobab limestones – perfect for
a designer bathroom; and many familiar, traditional stones that will look as
though they’ve been there forever, the minute you make them part of your
home.
Over our five years, we’ve found that the more choice we give you, the more
likely you are to choose Ca’ Pietra. We look forward to being part of your
project in 2014.

Stone types
Limestone
Travertine
Slate
Sandstone
The classic stone for interiors. Oftenlight in colour, but with tones thatcan range from grey to black, limestone always has interestingshell and fossil patterns. Limestone isversatile and durable. It agesbeautifully and only requires a littlecleaning and treatment to ensurethat it lasts for generations.
Slate makes wonderful, characterfulfloors – with metallic colouring andnatural undulations. It is very hard-wearing and, because of its darkercolouring, less demanding in terms ofmaintenance than many stones.
Sandstone is a robust sedimentaryrock, made up of compacted grains ofsand. It is hard-wearing, frost-resistant and low-slip – propertieswhich make it the perfect choice forexternal paving. Sandstone hasgraced pavements and gardens in theUK for centuries.
With a ‘seasoned’ finish, a processthat softens the coarseness of thestone, Ca’ Pietra sandstone can alsobe used for interior floors, giving anauthentic old flagstone look.
The natural surface-pits in travertineare usually filled with grout, leavingthe stone with an aged look ofinstant character, or with specialresins for a more sleek appearance. One feature of travertine is that smallholes will appear in the surface fromtime to time – this is nothing to beunduly concerned about as these
holes can simply be filled with a littlegrout. Travertine is easy to care forbut is a good choice for areas whichare not so heavily used. Travertine isclosely associated with Italianarchitecture and design.

The main distinction when deciding the perfect stone for your project is
whether it will be laid indoors or outdoors. But the way the stone is ‘finished’
and the tile sizes and patterns that are available can be just as important as
the actual raw material.
Most stones can be used in any context. But there is a big difference between
a ‘honed’ (highly polished) finish and a ‘satino’ finish which has a textured,
non-slip surface. The thickness of the cut stone is also very important – here,
you will need to balance the strength of the stone with the amount of height it
takes up. And you will need to decide whether you will be laying the stone in a
simple symmetric pattern or in a complex, random pattern.
To help you focus on the best stone for your project:
• read about the different stone types on pages 4–5.
• take a look at our glossary of finishes on page 8 – some are aesthetic, some
are for practical purposes.
• take a look at the different patterns on page 9. Only certain stones are
available in specific patterns.
• consider the thickness of the stone you will need (these range from 1.0 to
3.0 centimetres) and the tile dimensions (which vary from 30 x 40 up to 60
x 90 centimetres.
All stones are suitable for interior use. If you are planning to use stone in an
exterior setting, please look out for this symbol

FIxING STONE TO FLOORS
Solid floor substratesGenerally speaking, the best floorsurface to fix stone to is a sand andcement screed. Please check withyour builder that the screed isdefinitely sand and cement and notan anhydrous screed. Anhydrousscreeds require special preparation –please contact the Technical Helplinefor further information.
General preparationIf the screed is old or uneven then acertain level of preparation will beneeded – please contact theTechnical Helpline for furtherinformation.
Underfloor heatingUnderfloor heating works very wellwith stone and is highlyrecommended to provide thatadditional level of comfort.Underfloor heating for solid floorsubstrates comes in two key forms: aheated screed, in which hot waterpipes or electrical cables are buried;and under-tile heating, in which anelectric mat or loose cables are laidover the top of the screed just underthe tiles.
If your screed is heated, then youmust use a proprietary decouplingmembrane between the screed andthe stone – heated screeds expandand contract as the screed heats upand cools down and this lateralmovement will eventually cause thestone to crack if a decouplingmembrane is not used.
Non solid floor substratesStone can be installed to most nonsolid substrates – but carefulpreparation is needed. Please contactthe Technical Helpline for assistance.
FIxING STONE TO WALLS
When fixing stone to walls, it is agood idea to select a thinner stone. Also a smaller format will be simplerto fit – particularly on uneven walls. Some circumstances may require amechanical fixing system to be usedas well as the normal stone adhesive.
Solid wall substratesThe best solid wall substrate to fixstone to is a sand and cement render.Your builder will be able to confirmwhat the substrate is. Plastered wallswill need scoring and priming beforefixing stone.
Non solid wall substratesThe best non solid wall substrate tofix to is a proprietary tile backerboard, which is specifically designedto receive tiles. A plasterboard wallmay not be strong enough to supportthe weight of some thicker stones, while plywood can be subject tomovement which makes it morechallenging to receive stone.
This guidance is provided as an initialindication of factors you need toconsider. You should also seek theadvice of a professional tiler/installerwho can give you advice based onthe specific conditions on site. Allsubstrates should be prepared inaccordance with the relevant BritishStandard.
