MESSAGE from Director General of ASSR On behalf of the ASSR* Board of Directors, it is my pleasure to encourage you to attend the 9th ASSR Congress
on May 12 & 13 in Manila, Philippines. The main objective of the Society is to develop and support Stoma
Rehabilitation in Asian Countries, which exhibit many differences in lifestyle, culture, religion, politics and economy
from Western. Common to most Asian nations, however, is the poor welfare system to ostomates and the low
accessibility to proper stoma care. Without a good surgically created stoma, an appropriate stoma care program and a
suitable appliance, a satisfactory rehabilitation of ostomates can never be achieved. To improve stoma rehabilitation,
collaboration among the many parties concerned, especially surgeons, entero-stomal therapists, nurses, manufacturers
of appliances, etc. is mandatory. In Asia, however, closer or familiar collaboration is possible among them, although
each field is too much westernized and specialized for professionalism to contribute to Asian ostomates. Asian order or
discipline must not be disturbed.
Asian ostomates have to receive the information and care which will enable them to live self-
determined and independent life and to participate in all decision making processes as declared in
Charter of Ostomates' Rights of IOA (International Ostomy Society), and any surgeons and general
nurses with basic knowledge and skills of ostomy could serve for ostomates to achieve above, even if
they are not trained as specialized entero-stomal therapists. Therefore, it is quite appropriate for those
who are directly involved in this field to continue with the exchange and sharing of ideas concerning
the problems encountered, and to devise ways to overcome the various difficulties facing our region.
During the two full days of this Congress, the scientific program will focus on providing an intensive
study of the various aspects of stoma rehabilitation. Our aim is not only to enrich and deepen the
scientific basis of ostomy care, but also to develop ties and friendship among all delegates from
participating nations through a common goal of enhancing the quality of life for ostomates throughout
the Asian region.
Finally, the Philippines is a stable and safe country with full of cultural attraction, tasty foods and hospitality. I
am sure you will find Manila to be an interesting and friendly city where you will feel that particular sense of warmth
and friendship extended by Filipinos to all attendants.
I am very much looking forwards to seeing you all in Manila.
With warmest regards,
Katsuhisa Shindo, MD, PhD. Director General of ASSR

Message from the Congress President
Dear colleagues and co-advocates for better stoma care in the ASEAN region,
Allow me extend to you a warm welcome to the 9th Annual Congress of the Asean Society of Stoma
Rehabilitation (ASSR) Manila, Philippines.
We are very happy and proud to be hosting for the first time in our country the ASSR congress.
This event certainly gives us the opportunity to participate in international efforts on improving the
quality of stoma and wound care in the region. We have prepared quite an interesting and
educational program for you, inviting both local and foreign speakers to share their expertise on
various topics. Poster presentations and abstracts will also be an important element of the program.
The venue for the congress will be in The Medical City, one of the largest tertiary hospital networks
in the Philippines. The Medical City houses one of the busiest stoma and wound care clinics in the
country. The sessions will be held in the spacious and elegant Augusto Barcelon Hall The hospital
itself is located in the Ortigas business district, in the center of Metro Manila, and home to various
shopping malls, fine restaurants, and hotels.
This congress is also a wonderful opportunity for all the participants to interact and bond together in
a spirit of friendship, community, and shared advocacy. The fellowship night will feature a
Philippine cultural show and much merry-making between faculty, care-givers and ostomates.. A
day tour to Manila’s ancient historical site is also provided for.
We look forward to welcoming you and your family to Manila, offering our famous Philippine
hospitality..

Message from the Congress Vice President Dearest Colleagues In behalf of the organizing committee of the 9th Annual Asean Society of Stoma Rehabilitation we would like to extend a warm welcome to all. Ostomy care in the Philippines is now becoming a trend, wherein more and more nurses and other allied health care professionals do get involved and interested. It is where doctors , nurses, and other heath care professionals work hand in hand as partners in giving compassionate and competent ostomy care. That is why the congress aims to provide topics that are multi-disciplinary and coming from speakers who are experts in their field from different institutions, locally and internationally. It will be the first time that the Philippines will host such prestigious event and that makes us both proud and honoured. We would also like to invite all of those who are advocates for ostomy care to come and join us on May 12 & 13 2016 for this wonderful event that would make us more aware and knowledgeable in ostomy care. The Medical City Hospital welcomes you all.
