INTERVIEW with LaurentLaurent thats one of riders from Fixed Gear Geneva. I did have chance to see him in action during one of the last competitions in Paris. He took strong second place. Its nice to see that Shred-ing riders from Geneva like Laurent, David and Phil making big progress throug the year.

SOFB- What makes you good at riding fixed?

L- It’s really all down to pas-sion and just throwing your-self into it.

SOFB- Tell us about the last two competitions you went to.

L- In the last couple of months I’ve participated in Eurobike in Hamburg and the Bicycle Film Festival contest in Paris. I didn’t re-ally have the opportunity to show my stuff in Germany, but in Paris I really got into it and came second, with Simon Andraca in first place. Riding with both him and Nico was a great experience and of course tons of fun!

SOFB- How important is your crew?

L- Yeah of course! Actu-ally riding with my friends is how I got into freestyle. We’re always up for riding or meeting up to find new ways to improve! My friends and I set up the group Fixed Gear Geneva which now has over 350 members. I’m also part of another, smaller team called Shred with my friend Pepy and my brother David.

SOFB- What is the next of your projects?

L- I don’t have any big projects planned right now, but we are filming a new Shred edit, which should come out soon. Otherwise I’m just going to keep train-ing throughout the winter so as to come back even better next summer!

SOFB- Could you describe the. frame? It seems like it can take a beating.

L- Well my frame is a proto-type, which I and the other members of Shred had made specially. It’s has BMX tub-ing, so it’s really resistant and also very light which makes it perfect for free-style!

SOFB- Tell as about your coming month. and where are you at the moment?

L- As for future trips, I hope to participate in as many contests as I can both in Switzerland where I live and abroad. Unfortunately I won’t be able to make it to Barcelona later this month! I’m so gutted! But yeah, liv-ing in Geneva is great. There are some really good spots for both street and park rid-ing!

SOFB- Last question; any shout outs?

street or park more? Are you better at one more than the other?

L- I suppose street and park are equally exciting but for very different reasons. They both have their own appeal.

SOFB- How do you get pumped to ride hard?

L- I like to challenge myself, watching other riders’ vid-eos drives me to push my limits.SOFB- How do you set up your pedals before you get to an obstacle?

L- I do pedal check before bunny hopping anything so that i don’t loose too much speed yet it allows me to be always set.

WDC Hamburg One by one riders from Paris, Geneva, Cologne and Rotterdam arrived at the Suicycle store, the headquarters for fixed cycle culture in Hamburg (HH). It was a get-together of familiar friendly faces: Jason Sellers, Ruben Bauer, Manuel Schürholz, Simon Gomok & Cerise Goia, David Pili, Greg Falski and of course Gianni Suicycle. And some new faces too: Bastien Raoux and lo-cals Hinricht Schimanski & Philip Schleier.

It was already quite late when our small group went to bunk their stuff at a nearby sleeping place; A beautiful ‘innenhof’ with adorable one stock houses a shared community garden and a guesthouse. Hinricht’s neighbors were still outside and were so kind to share their food with us. Red potatoes and grilled fish!!! Great food for riding! So that was the next mission...

The day before the contest I already got a glimpse of the iPunkt Skateland. The park is a combination of a wooden inside & outside park. The inside park includes big obstacles, like a vert & bowl but also banks, rails a spine and good possibilities for riding lines for skateboarders, BMXers as well as bigger bicycles. The outside park included sunshine! and well built obstacles fit for skateboarding.

The day started where we left off yesterday: With more chilling. This time in the sun & inside the skatepark. Because the group of riders was quite small (London where the hell where you!?) the contest started as a 90 minute jam. This was quite a long & intense session for such a hot day. As always the eyes were on Gomok, but Ruben was also on a roll as well as David, Bastien & a surprise rider (Nelson Bell) from Seattle who turned up just in time to take part in the comp.

After the jam session BMXers were anxious to ride in their park again so the bunnyhop contest was mixed: fixed & bmx. It was no surprise Gomok striked again and took the 1st prize. The finals showed some good riding but no real surprises. It was already obvious who would win this one. When it was time for the best trick the riders were pretty much exhausted and squeezed out some last but brutal tricks; vert to quarter transfer by Gomok, double peg grind by Pili and über high wallride by Nelson, which was very well appreciated by the audience

Thursday night of the London BFF was planned as a sort of stunt show with Oscar, Gus, Chris, Anto, Saskia and bunch of friends having good time in the space of the Barbican Centre. An area of residential and public concrete ramps and walk-ways ideal for riding that, under normal circumstances, secu-rity would evict anyone on a bike after 5 minutes. A couple of small kickers give us lots of fun and the session lasted two hours before the cold and darkness forced us inside for sprints - Rollerpaluza series.

We had expected the events to be cut short and moved the jam to local skate parks at victoria park and london fields for Saturday morning. The Amsterdam based Pristine crew came along with Sol and Ninja Cats and Fury Bikes crew, have fun just trying stuff..

London fields was a one man show by Hector who was killing with his new moves including foot plant cancans and bar hops. I knew that less and less riders were going to screenings of the movies available at BFF so we tried to encourage everyone to take part and attend the movie screenings.


Some sick and varied movies were showing at the Barbican and WOLFPACK CRASH RACE 2 was this years favourite. Time for the after-party where Anto with his beautiful assistant Aymee make sure that everyone has a beer to hold on to. Thanks a lot to BFF and all the people who came to London that weekend.

Tell me how was Pristine Amsterdam born & how did you and sammy,keng & crew meet, tell us about the store and few brands you like and the mission workshop section etc.

Pristine started at the end of 2009. I had been riding fixed for a few years and met the Amsterdam Fixed Gear crew (which was 9 kids that hung out around the Olympic Sta-dium). That scene grew with-in a year to a whole bunch of people meeting up, doing tricks, playing polo against the messengers (broken ribs) and organizing events and alleycats. Sammy had just moved to Amsterdam and wanted to do something else, I was just finished with art school and we thought it was crazy that there were over 300 bike shops in Am-sterdam and no one sold any track or fixed gear stuff... so we opened a shop ourselves. Keng has been around since the very beginning and we're all good friends. And here we are two years later. We just expanded the shop upstairs and moved all our complete bikes up there so we have more room for parts and stuff. Since the very beginning we were in touch with Bart, Mark and Lyle of Mission Workshop and when we expanded the shop they jumped at the op-portunity to have their Euro-pean showroom in our shop. So that's where we are right now.We all love riding our bikes, we love working on custom projects for our customers, or doing collaborations with oth-er shops, crews and brands. We've done races with MASH, our own FTYC caps with Cinelli and a vegan Concor saddle with San Marco called the Concor X. Those are the things that get us really ex-cited.

Future projects.

There are a few things coming up. This December is our two year anniversary of the shop which we’re celebrating with another collaboration we’re doing with Mr. Lacy..

we’re making a limited run of a 100 laces that are reinforced with kevlar and have reflec-tive detailing. Just a fun little thing, but I think it turned out really nice.

We’re also working on a new steel Pristine pursuit frame and an aluminium track frame, so keep your eyes out for that.

As far as events, we did the whole Faster Than You Crew tournament this past sum-mer, that will be back as soon as the sun starts shining again. And we’re planning an-other long distance ride in the spring (this time to Copen-hagen) so if anyone feels like they want to join... holla! The last time we did such a long ride we rode to Paris and had a blast, not in the last place because of the great people we rode with and the nice weather. So fingers crossed this year will be no different.

Where do you think fixed gear bike will in a year from now? Meaning clas-sic/modern fix & trick fix freestyle.

That's a tough one since it's been evolving so fast over the last year. FGFS grew super big, and I think that's prob-ably going to evolve even fur-ther. With bikes and wheelsiz-es becoming smaller, but no idea where it will end. Person-ally I like it when FGFS tries to do it's own thing and not just tries to copy BMX.. be-cause there's no way to win that game. 20" wheels and a freewheel will always be able to go bigger than a fixed driv-etrain. So I love seeing riders like Keo Curry and Michael Chacon that bring their very own style to the table & that have more fixed gear specific tricks up their sleeves. That said, I love to see where the Grime boys and Tom LaMarche are pushing it... it's evolving so fast and people are go-ing bigger every week. Keng just finished the drawings for our 2nd prototype freestyle frame. He's been abusing the first prototype over the last 6

months and it’s going to be tweaked a bit. So look for-ward to a Pristine trick frame, along side a new track frame we’re working on. So, to answer your question, as long as kids keep push-ing it (and I know the Lon-don boys always are) it will just get better and better. I feel it’s kind of it’s own thing that doesn’t have too much to do with classic fixed gear bi-cycles. And that’s fine, I love that fixed gear can be so di-verse and they can all just ex-ist next to each other. There’s no need to pick one over the other, as long as people are having fun on their bikes than that’s all that matters.

Everyone knows that Bike Polo its a big part of whole urban bike community as well as the fixed gear scene. Some riders move from using fixed to freewheel for polo as it allows more dynamism. The Hells Bells com-petition took place this time at Milano Red Hook crite-rium. I decided to stay in London and hang out with the teams for this exiting weekend of girls close contact action. You can imagine my surprise when I turn up to the game and see some beared ladies.. wtf - apparenlty it’s actually allowed to have a mixed team.

Moving to the competition. The whole tournament took 2 days, giving a chance to all the teams to play each other. It was a really good idea as the majority of teams had travelled long distances to be there. Some teams pushed a bit to much on first day and little energy left to give on the second one. Still the strongest teams kept it going hard. There were many good teams but I need to mention both my private and the crowds fa-vourites The Tornados.

On a sunny sunday in October, we jampacked Johns car with 4 bikes and set sail to Brussels to meet up wIth the Ketjes & Thomas from Soundtrack who was also in town. Again we had some trouble finding our way through the city so we were running late and almost missed our meet & greet with the locals. Luck-ily they found us at a spot called Mont des Arts. This spot has the smoothest marble ledges imagina-ble, some stairs and more rideable objects.

After exploring Mont des Arts and after John grinded almost every ob-ject in sight we went to another spot next to the European Parliament to grind even more ledges with differ-ent levels. There was also a wood-en box to play with. John hit some high ledges as JayJay was showing off Ines Brunn-style, standing on his bike and going downhill on his new Goat.

Last spot we hit was a simple jump set up (but a lot of fun) in the Parc du Cinquantenaire. Laurent nailed superstylish 180 to sliders but Merlin was king of the hill hopping 180s higher and higher.After having the best milkshakes in town Merlin showed us the im-pressive view of the city from the Palace of Justice. And then it was already time to pack up our bikes and go home. What a sweet day. Yes Brussels, we are definetely coming back again! BFF Paris. Besides the dozens of films the three day festival-programme was filled with: some parties, a photo expo opening and a good mix of cycling activities for different styles of riding: Goldsprints, BMX freestyle & flatland demo’s, bikepolo & FGFS contests and a P.A.M.E. mes-senger Alleycat.Saturday and Sunday evening we (the out of towners) visited some very nice street spots with our Parisien guides. Which meant coming home completely wrecked, tired beyond belief and/or soaked to the bone every night. A good sleep + French breakfast (that french bread and cheese taste better every time you eat it, really) + decent coffee worked like a charm to get our days started.

We visited spots like the Bercy BMX park, Palais Omnisports de Bercy, Gare d’Austerlitz and some other spots along the way.The FGFS contest was bigger and better then last years’ with riders from Paris (Soundtrack, The UGH’s, Geometrick), Geneva (Shred), Lille (Nucult), London (Greg!) and Rotterdam! It was nice to see that since last year riders like Laurent Pili, Nicolas Zanoni, Romain Tromss and Simon Gomok improved a lot and gave away quite a show for the audience at Espace des Blanc Manteaux, together with the other riders.Not only the better known boys were riding the contest though. Lil’ Felix (11 yrs?) was reppin’ for the young ones and myself and Eliza were reppin’ for the girls.

During the last week of November Zontrac organised the legendary "Death of Barcelona" trip. It was a gathering of some well-known FGFS heads including riders from Paris, Geneva, London, Lisbon and LA who were all there to represent and shred the beautiful city, spot by spot.

Getting hyped upOn a late november night prior to flying out to Barcelona, Sol and I investigated some of the recom-mended spots on the Internet to piece together an itinerary of locations we needed to ride. Whilst doing this we already found ourselves discussing the prospective nasty bails we were going to see. We know too well what happens when a group of riders accumulate in one location!

The comforts of flyingI could remember, we just materialised there - in Barcelona After momentary disorientation, realisation set in when we walked through the exit. Right there we are welcomed by the Span-ish autumn sun and by Simon Gomok, who shows up as we're unpacking our bikes. Sol and Simon, hyped as they are, give away a little trick show at the airport, but after that it's time to grab our bags and hit the road and find our way to the city centre.

We manage to get lost almost instantly amongst the one-way street traffic. Maybe it had something to do with the hostel sign be-ing the size of a space invader artwork, who knows? But anyway, we found it. And we even met some friends along the way, Nelson Bell and his girl Erica who were in a similar situa-tion: looking for the hostel. As we were so ab-sorbed in unpacking our belongings we failed to notice the extraordinary surroundings, the hostel was built in 1847 and was pretty im-pressive with its original feature, sick!

OK. Time to get ourselves sorted, and try to find the rest of the gang. We got tipped off they would be at the Forum, a famous wall-riding spot. So seduced by the sun we got our shorts and smiles on and headed outOn a missionThe whole crew was already at the Forum when we arrived and was good to see all of them to-gether: riders, photographers & filmmakers. They got to Barcelona two (rainy) days before us but luckily for them, we brought the sun with us.

I was super stoked to shoot some photos and ride some spots. When I saw the wall-ride at the Forum I desperately wanted to hit it and thanks to Jakob Santos I found the right line. My heart was pumping like a techno track when I did it…A bumpy ride up…stopped in time to turn.…spin down…and done!

On one side of the Forum Santos, Sol and Oscar started do-ing some foot plants and on the other side Ed and Simon did some barrier hops to wheelie to grind. We decided to take a swim in the cold sea as Simon, Oscar and Santos were doing a rail to gap session. Simon nailed a nice drop. Oscar did a To-boggan and Santos topped that with an impressive 180 gap. It was a shock difference to the grey streets of London with the inviting sea so close to hand, can't imagine doing that in the Thames!

After that activity we were inevitably hungry to explore the city more and see what else was on offer. Riding through the city it seemed every bit of architecture was just screaming: RIDE ME! We found this amazing piece of steel architecture perfect for the next shoot. Oscar hit it first with a wall-ride to 180. Then Simon took over with a massive wall-ride to barspin dropping off the last bit of the structure. That was the moment i was waiting for: the perfect shot. I had it! The one I came to Barcelona for. The cover shot. It's big and Simon Gomok is in it.

Oh Snap!On the next day we all followed Diogo Maymone, who's currently living in Barcalona, as he had a couple of spots in mind. First he guides us to this famous spot at the end of the harbour, close to some crazy sculptures. Ruben Bauer and Bastian Raoux join us, while most riders are waiting for Sol to shows off some infamous Ninja Cats moves. He delivers double-handed grabs and crazy kicks.

Diogo then took us to a new spot where we are, again, amazed by the architecture & art that is spread throughout the city of Barcelona. The new spot has loads of crazy sculptures and rails. Ed Wonka is immediately on it. Trying a rail to grind and hop over. Some crazy bails follow and Simon wants to have a go… another tough bail. But it's good to see that Ed is pushing Simon to try more and more. In the end Ed helps Simon to nail a double peg rail to bar spin. Nice!

We move to next spot, spotted by Ed. It's a nice rail with stairs shaped like a cheese grinder. Nice one! Ed is the first to try it and he nailed a legit double peg grind on it. After that he took it up a notch by trying hangovers and crazy nose pivots. Santos found another rail closeby… But on the first try he bails and finds himself falling straight into the stairs, snapping his foot on the way down. Damn! Everyone just freezes. His foot looks really bad. It's obvi-ously broken. A big lump appeared instantly and Diogo calls for an ambulance straight away…This doesn't look good at all. In 5 minutes the ambulance arrives and takes Santos to hospital.

We try some more things after Santos was swept away by the am-bulance but everyone is really out of it because of the crash. You can't really enjoy yourself when something like that happens to a friend. The whole groups decides to ride to the hospital where we find another spot close by. While Ed and Santos are in the hospital we ride this amazing sculpture shaped like a dragon. Simon tries an amazing 180 wall-ride to barspin about a 100 times smashing himself so hard try after try.

We get back to the hotel where everyone is trying to make [painless harmfully to Santos.] We leave the hostel for a night ride as it's the last night in Barcelona for me and Sol and we try to get the most out of it. Oscar is on it as well. You can see he is in the mood to destroy some spots. We ride from spot to spot and take over a square with big banks and metal sculptures. Everyone is doing their thing. Oscar set his mind on a gap to road and ended up landing a couple of nice 180's over the gap…launching himself straight into oncoming traffic. Sol is landing pivots at the same time and everyone else finds a thing or two to hit and try out.

We head on over to another spot and yet again it an urban landscape that promotes inven-tive riding. It was sandwiched next to an imposing bridge with massive slopping banks, providing the perfect take off for anything you want to try. Again Oscar is going for it full speed and Ricardo, Nelson, Sol and the rest of the gang followed his lead. After a couple more spots everyone splits up to meet back at the hostel later. Time to go over todays hits and bails by looking through the footage and photos. It was definitely a day with great highs and a great low.

Last day.The next day starts early as we only have a half a day left. Oscar, Ed and Santos decide to stay home as they need to recover and still have a couple more days than us to ride.

Everyone else behaves like it's D-day – and get totally crazy! Sol's going big and hurts his wrist after a big drop but he ignores it and pushes himself during the last couple of hours of riding. Ricardo takes over and throws in some constant tricks. Simon, Bastian, Ruben and Nelson as well. It's a great day for the Zontrac guys to get some more photos of their team and we hit a couple more spots before the rain sets in. It's finally and regretfully time say goodbye.

On the way back we are on autopilot again. Tired to the bone. While we're waiting for our delayed flight we flip through the photos and video shot during this short but intense trip. Back in London we are welcomed by the freezing cold but our hearts are still warm and filled with excitement from the last couple days. Good times with good friends.

Thanks to all the people involved in this trip: Zontrac, Traffic, Steel mag, Diogo (for his help and knowledge), West fixed, bmx crew with Jotta on their side, Ed and Santos (who are at the top of the game and a great inspiration for all of us)… And everyone else, you know who you are. This trip will stay in our hearts.

Nick Mahoney recently set up a local fixed gear shop, Saint Cloud, which forms the HQ of the crew. It is the usually meeting spot, the hang out and the parts store. The shop has solidified the standing of fixed freestyle within the local community and now they are even selling complete trick bikes to younger kids keen to try out the new style.

The crew is still growing and we hope to see big things for fixed freestyle in Australia in the future.

it’s likely that you’ll spot the local fixed freestyle crew ‘MBASE’ meeting up for a regular trick session.

As you would expect the rigid track frames and com-ponents began to fall apart, the boys began looking for better parts to suit their new style. They found what they were looking for, after a lot of trial and error, in a BMX / MTB hybrid. They stole parts from each and began to put together a big fixed geared trick bike.

Introducing the MBASE Crew

When the Melbourne weather finally clears up the MBASE crew inevitably heads down to the local Museum for a regular Wednesday night ride. A group of about 10 guys roll up after work, uni or a hard day of doing nothing and get down to the real business of riding Trick.

The crew started about three years ago with a few guy’s doing skids and mono’s on their old track bikes. The crew slowly got bigger as did the tricks, first to backwards circles, keo spins and nowbarspins. Now the crew is super progressive, with everyone trying the latest trick from Jensen or trying to hop as high as LaMarche and pushing their own limits all the time. It creates a really hyped environment that is always exciting to ride in.
