    The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 29.97 points or 0.24%, to close at 12,318.14. The Nasdaq Composite ended at 2,831.58, up 6.02 points or 0.21% and the

    S&P 500 Index gained 4.11 points or 0.31%, to close at 1,340.43.

    In the economic data, the Philadelphia Federal Reserve Index rose to its highest level since January 2004 at 35.9 as compared to 19.3 last month.

    The index of leading economic indicators saw growth slowing to 0.1% in January versus 0.8% in December. A sharp downward swing in building permits volume

    accounted for the fall in the index.

    US MARKET

    The 50-share NSE Nifty tumbled 88 points, to end at 5,459 and the 30-share BSE Sensex fell 295 points, to close at 18,211.

    Top gainers on the Sensex were Jindal Steel, up 10%, Tata Steel advanced 7.2%, State Bank of India gained 6.6% and Bajaj Auto was up 6.3%. The major losers

    were DLF, down 6%, Reliance Communication, down 4.1%, ONGC, off 3.4% and Mahindra and Mahindra, down 2.6%.

    Asian stocks rebounded this week after U.S. and Japanese central banks raised their growth outlooks and companies posted better-than-estimated earnings,

    boosting confidence in the global recovery.

    The benchmark Nikkei 225 Stock Average gained 2.2 percent this week, while Australia's S&P/ASX 200 Index increased 1.1 percent. Taiwan Taiex jumped 2.7

    percent after the island's economy also recorded better-than-estimated GDP numbers in the fourth quarter.

    Australia's currency appreciated 0.3 percent to $1.0150 at 12:36 p.m. in New York, from $1.0119 yesterday, and advanced 1.3 percent this week. The currency

    was at 84.35 yen, compared with 84.30 yen. New Zealand's dollar bought 76.32 U.S. cents, compared with 75.89 cents, and traded at 63.46 yen, compared with

    63.22 yen.

    ASIAN & EMERGING MARKET

    The index of leading economic indicators saw growth slowing to 0.1% in January versus 0.8% in December. A sharp downward swing in building permits volume

    accounted for the fall in the index.

    The government put out a promised new price index on Friday that will capture changes in prices of goods and services sold at the retail level, helping the

    government and the central bank get a better grip on policy tools while tackling inflation.

    Country's foreign exchange reserves declined by $752-million to $298.663-billion for the week ending February 11, the Reserve Bank said on Friday. India's total

    foreign exchange reserves had stood at $299.415-billion the previous week.

    India's gold imports are seen likely to exceed 918 tonnes in the calendar year 2011 on the back of robust demand coupled with high economic growth.
