sell. Readers of this magazine, with few exceptions (you know who you are!), may make up theleast self-promoting profession in the country. If only bankers and lawyers were so humble.I understand and appreciate the position that if no one is talking about your fields, that’s a

good thing and you are fine with that. Like umpires and referees you prefer not to makeyourself “part of the story.” But remember how many hours you put into your fields! Thinkof the little things you do to improve the playing experience that no one ever sees, the im-provements only you are responsible for despite limited resources. Players, administrators,fans, boosters—everyone should know! A higher profile just might mean a better raise comeyour next review, too. TMA CEO KIM HECK delivered an excellent professional development exerciseat our summer Board meeting. She asked us to identify what the Board wantedmost for our membership. On this particular day, the answer was “recognition.”We want appropriate recognition for you from your clientele, your employers, the

public, etc., for your expertise and professionalism in sports turf management. The exerciseincluded an “in your wildest dreams, what could you visualize?” segment. One suggestionwas a weekly sports turf management show on ESPN, followed by having our own network.Then we discussed a more realistic target. How about a screen shot describing the field, theplaying surface, AND the sports turf manager; similar to that seen almost every week on tele-vised golf events? The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America has done a won-derful job of gaining recognition for its superintendents. The public’s perception of the valueof golf course superintendents has never been higher.

Most successful sports turf managers are very much like an umpire or referee at the top oftheir profession: if you do your job well, you typically are not noticed and it is only whenmistakes occur that “recognition” follows. This is not a profession dominated by outgoingpersonalities eager to talk about themselves or their jobs.

Another challenge is that far too often the “recognition” we get occurs due to elements be-yond our control (weather extremes, overzealous event scheduling, vandalism, etc.). YourBoard continues to explore ways that STMA can refine its steps to more quickly and effi-ciently respond on behalf of its membership regarding crises and unforeseen problems thatarise on sports fields.

As a member, YOU must be ready to educate others about our profession as well. If youwork at a facility that regularly hosts televised or radio-broadcast events, develop (and deliverto your Sports Information Director or similar contact) a brief information sheet describingthe field, its maintenance, and most importantly, include background information on YOU(experience, education, staff, CSFM?, etc.). Even if you don’t have a SID to work with, it islikely that your fields will host tournaments or events that will be featured in local or regionalprint media. I regularly see articles in our local paper touting the economic impact of hostinga regional baseball tournament, and you can bet that out-of-town teams won’t (at least notfor long) come to play on sub-standard sports fields. Your efforts should be recognized andappreciated! STMA has a media advisory template on its website that you can use as a guideto provide this important information to media outlets.

What else can we do? Consider contacting local sports stations and news shows. I reached outto hosts of local sports-themed radio shows, suggesting interviews with the sports field managersat Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia on how they get their fields game-ready for thefootball season. Within 4 days both had responded positively asking for the contact informationfor Emerson Pulliam (VT) and Jesse Pritchard, CSFM (UVa). If we all take small steps such asthese, significant positive recognition could be generated for our profession. n

We asked some men who have been mem-bers of the Sports Turf Managers Associationfor 30 or more years to respond to two ques-tions: What is your general philosophy on theart and science of turf management? Who arethe most memorable turf managers you havementored and why are they so memorable?

I do believethat turfgrassmanagement in-volves both, artand science.Having been inthe business ofmanaging

sports fields at many levels over the past 39years, I found that to be a successful field man-ager one must have a comprehensive knowledgeof the scientific aspects of plant growth in orderto meet the demands of today’s professionalsports business. With that being said, I havealso found that a great deal of sports field acu-men is necessary, as well. Making intelligent de-cisions by quickly and accurately decipheringand filtering through all of the variables that afield manager faces on a daily basis is truly anart form.

Possessing the expertise and knowledge ofhow turfgrass grows is essential. As everyoneknows, there are numerous variables that comeinto play when dealing with turfgrass manage-ment (climatic conditions, soil conditions, turf-grass types, irrigation systems, stadium and fieldorientation, financial resources, team and man-agement expectations and field activity, to namea few). Understanding the potential conse-quences of drought, heavy rain, heat, cold,frost, snow, shade, high temperatures, clay soils,high salts, low/high soil organic matter, mow-

ing, aerification, topdressing, fertilization, pesti-cide applications, field use, tarping, resourcesand expectations are critical in making quicksound decisions on sports fields, especiallyhigh-profile game fields.

Having the basic tools and a dedicated staffto properly and efficiently manage the field is asessential to turfgrass management as one’s ex-pertise and knowledge. And, there is a myriadof scientific tools and equipment that can assistthe field manager in making decisions that mayhelp diagnose conditions and/or problems.

One must also have the willingness to seekout detailed information from others in the in-dustry for verification, tips, ideas and experi-ences with similar situations so all options insolving problems can be comprehensively ex-amined. Networking with academia and otherfield managers in the industry can be a big helpin determining one’s best course of action inproviding an optimal playing surface in manychallenging situations.

In addition to the scientific aspects of grow-ing turfgrass, I believe there is another impor-tant part of being a successful field manager.That is what to do and when to do it in certainsituations. Experience plays a big part in thisand is a great teacher. I do believe that experi-ence teaches the art of managing turfgrass.

One example of applying the art of sportsfield management would be how much waterto apply on a football field during the days ofgame week or a practice field during the earlyseason practices sessions. From the scientificside of turfgrass management the grass prefersto be irrigated to field capacity and then al-lowed to dry down before irrigating again.However, irrigating to field capacity a day ortwo before heavy field activity most likelywould be disastrous to the grass, the soil, fieldplayability and player safety. In my opinion,knowing how much water to apply during

game week throughout the season to preventgrass decline yet provide optimal playability andsoil strength is definitely an art form.

I think the art of turf management is basedon knowledge gained from education and expe-rience along with predicted information for thefuture of field conditions (weather and fielduse). Art is calculating and formulating at leastthree contingency plans to overcome changesthat may occur with future predictions.

I’ve often thought that the art of turfgrassmanagement could be defined in scientificterms by correlating all of the variables in turf-grass growth and field use to come up with thelowest common denominator that could be ex-pressed scientifically in every situation. How-ever, because turfgrass management involvesmanipulating so many variables that constantlychange day by day and even within any givenday I’m not sure if this would ever be possible.Managing various situations, I feel, is the art ofmanaging the turfgrass.

I’m not sure that I’ve ever mentored anyoneand I don’t consider myself a mentor (maybethat notion just comes with old age and hang-ing around so long).

I have always willingly shared my experi-ences, both successes and failures, with otherindustry professionals for three reasons: 1) tolearn from others so that I might be better atwhat I do; 2) to help those that reach out to meto, hopefully, make them better; and 3) to helpmake the industry (STMA) become better,stronger and more professional.

I’m sincerely proud of where STMA and thesports turf industry are today! The quality andprofessionalism of the people involved todayhas elevated sports turf management to a newlevel.

The leadership of STMA over the pastmany years has guided STMA the pinnacle ofsupport and opportunity for the membershipand continues to do so. And the membership,with their involvement and support, are keep-ing it there. I’m proud to have been a part ofthat growth and will continue my involvementand support.

vehicle of change…In my 34 years

in the industryand 31 years withthe STMA, theone drivingforce that haschanged the in-

dustry to what it istoday is educa-tion. The num-ber of collegeeducatedgroundskeepersin sports turf has

skyrocketed in the past three decades. When Ientered the industry in 1979, there were fewin the sports field end of the turf industrywith any significant formal education in turf.They often relied on what had been passed onto them from previous sports field managersor what worked for them. Back then theyweren’t always willing to share their secrets ormethods of management. But during the 80’s,the tide turned. As I maneuvered my way through turf

school at the University of Wisconsin in theearly 80’s, my advisor, Dr. Jim Love, alerted meto a new organization called the Sports TurfManagers Association, which peaked my inter-est since my desire was to get into that end ofthe business upon graduation. Information wasslow to flow in the early years from the organi-zation but luckily, due to my close proximity tothe Milwaukee Brewers’ ballpark, County Sta-dium, I was able to meet with Harry Gill andarrange an internship with him in my last sum-mer before my senior year. As one of thefounding fathers of the STMA, his willingnessto take on an intern (something that washardly ever done in MLB back then) was ad-mirable. While my time there was brief, the ex-perience was invaluable. You see, it was actually Harry who got me

my job with the Baltimore Orioles. In August1984, I had sent resumes out to several ballclubs including the Orioles. Their headgroundskeeper, Pat Santarone, was looking tohire someone to train to take his position uponretirement. Thanks to Harry’s recommendationto Pat, I was interviewed and quickly hiredonto the Orioles as the assistant. Pat had saidhe had wanted someone with a degree in turfto take his place. He could see changes thatwere occurring in the industry and how much

more technical it had become since his glorydays. And so it began.While I was one of the earlier turf graduates

in the sports turf industry back then, I was the“drip before the deluge.” As the 90’s camealong, so did a building wave of turf graduatesvying for jobs in sports field management. Andit wasn’t just men coming from the collegecampuses; female graduates were breaking thebarrier of the once male-dominated profession.And soon, we would see them at all levels ofthe profession. Along the way, the STMA wasrapidly growing and offering an ever-expandingvariety of educational opportunities from theirannual conference in January, to regional andstate chapter events, a monthly magazine andother printed educational materials. The edu-cated sports turf managers were riding the waveinto the 21st century. With the advent of the younger, more tech

savvy sports turf managers came their demandto academia for more sports turf specific re-search. They required better and more diverseequipment, better performing field drainagesystems, improved turfgrass varieties, and moreeco-friendly and effective turf chemicals andfertilizers. Where education initiated the wave,science would build the intensity. The sportsturf industry had come of age. Tasks thatseemed impossible just two decades beforewould become common practice in some casesby the turn of the century. I left my post with the Orioles at the start of

the new millennium. In my final 2 years withthe club I had been spending more and moreof my off seasons teaching and speaking aboutfield maintenance. It was something I loveddoing because I remembered how I was in theearly years, hungry for any information aboutsports field management. And I knew therewere plenty of groundskeepers out there withlots of questions. One of the reasons I left theOrioles for Beacon Athletics (then called Bea-con Ballfields) was because of Beacon’s desire tohave someone like me to help educate theircustomers. It was an opportunity I was anxiousto embrace and move forward. Thirteen yearslater, after a couple hundred seminars and nowa new online groundskeeper training program,I still get the thrill each time I get to gush myknowledge and experience to those interestedin learning. It is a thrill for me to help thosestruggling with their field maintenance to un-derstand why something is happening and howto solve the problem. It is a great way to giveback to the profession and keep it moving for-ward. For me, it is a tip of the hat to those

who taught me, Dr. Jim Love, Harry Gill, PatSantarone and so many others in the professionthat it would be impossible to name them. One could say I’ve helped mentor many

people in the industry, I would probably laughat that. I was merely helping them understandtheir problems either through science or com-mon sense. It doesn’t always take a college edu-cation to figure out a problem and its solution.But like the inquisitive groundskeepers thatcome to me looking for answers, I still con-tinue to learn new things every time I step onto someone else’s field or attend educationalconferences. As groundskeepers, we need, no,we have a duty to continue to talk to eachother, network and seize every opportunity tofurther our own education. Education pushedthe science, and both pushed the change in ourindustry. The “art of groundskeeping” has be-come the “science of groundskeeping.” It is oureducation that will continue to move this in-dustry forward for better performing, safer andmore aesthetically pleasing fields.

MIKE SCHILLER, CSFM, STMA PAST PRESIDENTI really have been blessed to be part of

STMA since nearly the inception of the organi-zation. Eric asked for my “philosophy on theart and science of turf management”; my wholecareer I tried to provide the safest playing sur-faces possible within the constraints of ourbudget. Whether I was working on the fieldsduring my Air Force career, or for one of thePark Districts or schools I have had the privi-lege to work at, my goal was to provide a safe,aesthetically pleasing playing facility. This goal was because I felt a recreational

player or student athlete deserved to be playingon the best surface we could provide. I always felteach participant deserved to feel like a pro, andwe tried to provide a safe consistent surface forthem to showcase their talent as this may be thehighest level of competition they may play at.And I tried to instill these thoughts in each

of the talented people I had the opportunity towork with. I felt we were in the business to
