St. John’s Messenger Volume 93, Issue 6 March 20, 2013 “ … with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word and deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God theFather through him.” Colossians 3:16-17 A pastor tells of spending time in Japan during his seminary training and living with a non-Christian Japanese family. After they went with him to visit the little mission church he was serving, they exclaimed: “You Christians sing your faith!” This has been true from the earliest days. The second reading for Passion/Palm Sunday is always Philippians 2:511, a hymn sung by first- century believers. It tells the whole story of Jesus in just a few verses: he is God who emptied himself of divinity, and became a humble human servant, a servant who was obedient, even to death on a cross. Therefore, the hymn goes on, God has highly exalted him. This is our faith in a nutshell. When we sing during worship, we do many things. Some of our hymns are prayers for God’s help. Many of them are hymns of praise and worship. Some teach us about serving and discipleship. Or they encourage us and inspire faithful living. We sing the truth of our faith and grow in understanding. Granted, we sometimes sing without paying attention to the words. How many times have we sung “Take my silver and my gold; not a mite would I withhold” without realizing what we have just said. Really? You wouldn’t hold back any of your money? Or we sing “I love to tell the story” but have a deep reluctance to share our faith stories because we fear what others might think. At the same time, the hymns can get to us. Sometimes we leave worship humming the tune we last sang. If it is one we especially like, it often comes back to remind us of God’s loving presence.

“ … with gratitude in your hearts sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God. And whatever you do, in word and deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God theFather through him.” Colossians 3:16-17

A pastor tells of spending time in Japan during his seminary training and living with a non-Christian Japanese family. After they went with him to visit the little mission

church he was serving, they exclaimed: “You Christians sing your faith!”

This has been true from the earliest days. The second reading for Passion/Palm Sunday is always Philippians 2:511, a hymn sung by first-century believers.

During Holy Week we sing the story of that last week in Jesus’ earthly life. Beginning with “All glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer King” to tell the story of Palm Sunday, we move to the crucifixion story with “O sacred head now wounded” and remind ourselves to walk with Jesus from Gethsemane to the cross to the empty tomb in “Go to dark Gethsemane.”

We sing of Jesus’ great love that led him to take time even knowing what was coming, to give us the great gift of bread and wine as a way for us to remain connected to him. And we painfully admit our complacency and even participation in the fatal events. We mournfully stand at the cross where all is dark.

And then comes Easter with the sense of joyful celebration for a victory won, the hope that we too will share in the resurrection life that Christ gives. We joyfully, hopefully, sing that Christ is risen. And Alleluias! We have not sung them since Ash Wednesday because Alleluia is an Easter word. It feels so good to sing them again.

May Holy Week strengthen your faith so you can joyfully celebrate the Easter Festival of the Resurrection. God’s peace be with you all.

Synod Weaving Project Winds Through Congregations

A special project for the 2013 Synod Assembly is underfoot among the congregations of the Upper Susquehanna Synod. A liturgical art-piece is being created, one ribbon at a time, as congregations wind pieces of fabric, ribbon, or rope through specially-made weaving fabric. St. John’s completed our portion of the project last week and it has been sent off to the next congregation.

The six large panels—one for each of the six conferences of the synod—will be sewn together into one large piece. The finished piece, with the addition of a super-imposed image of a cross, will measure 13 x 21 feet, and will hang behind the altar for worship at the assembly, which will gather under the theme, "Woven Together in Christ". Each conference has organized sharing their section among the congregations of the conference, giving each one a chance to weave a small section.
