Dear!Friends,!

!

When!we!gathered!in!the!fellowship!hall!last!summer!to!dream!together!about!the!year!ahead,!none!of!us!could!have!predicted!that!we!would!be!holding!this!Annual!Meeting!via!Zoom!and!be!on!week!number!twenty!of!worshipping!via!YouTube.!!The!coronavirus!has!changed!everything\!not!only!about!church!but!in!almost!every!aspect!of!our!lives.!

How!we!miss!“going!to!church”!!TT!being!together!in!person,!the!familiar!rituals,!passing!the!peace,!singing!and!sharing!communion.!

And!yet,!as!I!reflect!upon!the!past!year!I!am!reminded!again!and!again!that!“church”!is!not!a!building!we!go!to,!but!something!we!are.!We!are!not!called!to!go#to#church,!but!to#be#the!Church.!And!the!Church!has!not!closed!!We!are!meeting!weekly!for!prayer!and!spiritual!practice!groups.!Bible!study!is!going!strong!with!more!people!added!each!month!and!our!worship!attendance!(according!to!YouTube!views)!is!30%!above!where!it!was!this!time!last!year.!We!are!having!challenging,!vulnerable!and!inspiring!conversations!about!race!through!our!newly!formed!Social!Justice!Book!Club.!!We!are!supporting!and!strengthening!our!ministry!outside!the!walls!of!our!church!building!through!ongoing!collaboration!with!Woods!Hall!and!a!renewed!partnership!with!island!food!producers.!Our!Food!Shelf!is!feeding!more!people!than!ever!before!and!we!are!creating!partnerships!with!colleagues!in!our!region!such!as!the!Hunger!Relief!Federation!and!an!area!coalition!of!congregations!working!on!creation!care!and!racial!justice!initiatives.!And!these!are!just!the!“official”!work!of!our!congregation.!I!know!that!you!all!are!“being!the!Church”!in!more!ways!than!can!be!counted.!You!are!making!extra!phone!calls!to!check!on!friends!who!live!alone,!setting!up!Zoom!coffee!chats!and!happy!hours,!you!are!leaving!gifts!of!produce!on!doorsteps!and!making!an!extra!trip!to!the!pharmacy!for!a!neighbor!when!you!go!to!the!mainland.!You!are!donating!your!time,!talent!and!treasure!in!incredibly!generous!ways!and!serving!this!community!with!enthusiasm!and!creativity.!!

Inside!this!packet!you!will!find!our!2019!Annual!Report,!together!with!budget!summaries,!and!committee!reports.!I!hope!you!will!take!time!to!review!these!documents!and!celebrate!the!wonderful!year!we!had!together!as!a!community.!I!especially!draw!your!attention!to!the!letter!from!Debbie!Knopf,!Church!Council!President!who!provides!an!excellent!overview!of!the!breadth!and!depth!of!ministry!that!has!happened!this!past!year.!I!would!like!to!say!a!special!thank!you!to!Debbie!for!her!integrity,!intelligence,!humor,!experience,!wisdom!and!steadfast!commitment.!I!am!grateful!for!her!partnership!on!this!journey!and!we!are!blessed!beyond!measure!by!her!leadership.!!

Friends,!in!these!unprecedented!times!we!cannot!know!what!new!challenge!may!lie!ahead!for!us,!but!one!thing!we!can!know!for!sure.!It!is!for!times!like!these!that!the!Church!was!born:!to!bind!up!the!broken!hearted!and!share!the!good!news!that!the!power!of!Love!is!greater!than!the!power!of!fear\!that!nothing!can!separate!us!from!God!(in!all!the!ways!we!understand!who!and!what!God!is),!that!each!of!us!has!a!role!to!play!in!bringing!light,!compassion,!healing,!justice!and!joy!into!the!world.!I’m!so!proud!to!be!your!pastor!during!these!days.!What!a!privilege!it!is!to!

I!am!just!completing!my!first!year!as!your!Council!President,!and!what!a!year!it!has!been!!!I!came!into!this!thinking,!okay,!facilitating!a!monthly!meeting,!creating!meeting!agendas,!having!more!regular!conversations!with!Pastor!Rachel!and!Committee!heads!to!make!sure!that!things!were!running!smoothly,!and!needs!were!being!addressed\!simple!and!straightforward,!right?!!Well,!not!quite!so!much!!!It!has!truly!been!quite!a!busy,!and!somewhat!unusual!and!challenging!year,!in!both!the!life!of!our!church!and!community.!!I!am!so!thankful!to!be!part!of!such!an!amazing!and!conscientious!group!of!folks!serving!on!Church!Council!at!this!time,!thankful!and!even!more!aware!of!the!terrific!work!of!our!church!and!Woods!Hall!staff,!and!especially!grateful!to!be!able!to!work!so!closely!with!our!very!wise,!kind,!perceptive,!and!enthusiastic!Pastor,!Rachel.!!It!has!been!a!meaningful!journey!to!be!sure,!if!only!for!a!year!so!far.!

Several!important!initiatives!were!in!process!last!fall,!one!of!those!being!the!updating!of!our!complete!system!of!audioTvisual!tools,!to!allow!us!to!do!a!better!job!with!projecting!sound!and!video!in!and!from!the!church.!Little!did!we!know!how!extremely!critical!this!work!would!be!in!the!coming!months!!!We!also!installed!a!new!carillon!so!the!church!bells!could!be!heard!again!across!LaPointe\!and!to!roll!out!an!updated!St.!John’s!website!to!extend!our!connection!and!outreach!to!many.!!!

Pastor!Rachel!and!I!facilitated!a!Church!Council!Retreat!in!November!to!have!the!council!work!together!to!brainstorm!and!vision!where!we!saw!St.!John’s!moving!in!the!coming!few!years?!What!were!we!doing!well?!What!areas!did!we!need!to!strengthen?!!It!was!a!great!process!that!helped!us!identify!the!work!we!wanted!to!begin!to!focus!some!of!our!energy!on!to!help!our!church!to!grow!in!its!service!and!ministry.!!A!couple!of!key!ideas!that!came!from!this!were!1)!a!desire!to!strengthen,!or!re!affirm!the!connection!between!St.!John’s!and!Woods!Hall,!one!of!St!John’s!key!ministries.!2)!a!desire!to!create!more!connection!to/with!our!local!and!regional!community\!3)!a!desire!to!revitalize!our!membership!and!participation!in!our!church\!4)!to!create!a!financial!plan!that!will!better!sustain!St.!John’s!moving!forward,!and!5)!to!update!our!Church!Constitution!and!byTlaws!as!well!as!some!of!our!governance!structures!to!fit!more!with!how!our!church!is!working!in!today’s!world.!

Out!of!this!process!a!Task!Force!was!developed,!made!up!of!participants!from!Woods!Hall!and!from!St.!John’s,!to!work!together!on!planning!strategies!to!bring!these!ideas!to!life!in!a!way!that!would!enhance!the!ministry!of!both!Woods!Hall!and!St.!John’s.!!All!of!this!had!been!started!and!ideas!and!strategies!were!being!formed,!when!word!of!CovidT19!arrived,!and!everything!changed.!!The!Task!Force!had!to!pause!its!work,!and!our!focus!became!caring!for!our!community!through!a!pandemic,!which!has!clearly!stretched!us!all!as!we!find!our!way!through!such!challenging!times.!

So!here!we!are,!attending!our!church!services!on!YouTube,!having!everything!from!Council!Meetings,!Fellowship!hour,!and!Bible!Study!on!Zoom\!sending!in!church!donations!via!the!Website\!Woods!Hall!having!limited!retail!hours,!and!having!to!cancel!our!bazaar!!!!We!are!so!truly!fortunate!to!have!the!capacity!with!our!new!audioTvisual!tools!for!our!technical!guru,!

Barbara!With,!to!record!and!produce!the!beautiful!church!services!on!you!tube!each!week,!with!participants!sometimes!from!all!over!the!country!!Thank!goodness!we!got!that!new!system!installed!in!time!!!

Caring!for!our!community!on!Madeline!Island!has!been!a!strong!focal!point!over!recent!months.!As!we!became!even!more!aware!that!people!were!experiencing!food!scarcity,!much!of!our!work!has!been!in!Food!Sustainability.!This!has!involved!the!creation!of!a!Food!Support!Team!to!manage!the!increased!needs!of!the!St.!John’s!Food!Shelf,!as!well!as!to!partner!with!Island!food!producers,!and!provide!supports!to!them!to!promote!their!success!as!well.!!Island!food!producers,!as!well!as!the!Community!Garden,!are!growing!food!for!themselves,!selling!food!to!the!public,!and!providing!surplus!to!those!who!are!in!need!in!the!community.!!This!has!resulted!in!terrific!collaboration!across!our!community,!which!is!also!meeting!the!Council’s!second!goal,!“to!create!more!connection!with!our!local!and!regional!community”.!We!anticipate!this!cooperative!work!continuing!as!we!work!together!to!meet!the!increased!needs!of!our!community!into!the!fall!and!winter.!!

In!closing,!while!serving!as!Council!President!is!not!at!all!what!I!had!imagined!it!might!be,!it!certainly!has!been!rich!with!connection!and!meaningful!work!!!It!is!a!reminder!to!me!to!“grow!where!you!are!planted!”,!or!“to!serve!where!you!are!called!to!be,!in!whatever!that!brings!you!to.”!!None!of!this!work!or!planning!could!happen!without!those!who!donate!the!money!to!make!things!happen,!those!who!build!the!connections!by!reaching!out!to!others,!those!who!do!the!physical!labor,!those!who!inspire!and!share!gratitude,!those!who!pray!for!the!wellbeing!of!all,!……………in!other!words,!without!each!of!you.!

The!future!may!seem!uncertain,!we!don’t!really!know!when!we!will!be!able!to!worship!in!person,!or!gather!together!in!true!fellowship!again,!however,!we!will!find!our!way!through!these!challenges,!by!way!of!our!faith.!!Thank!you!each!for!your!commitment!and!dedication!to!St.!John’s.!

MEMO TO Woods Hall Board of Directors FROM Mark Hier, Treasurer

DATE January 7, 2020 SUBJECT DECEMBER 2019 YEAR-END TREASURER’S REPORT

Woods Hall ended 2019 in a very strong financial position, exceeding some goals, falling short of others and reflecting very effective expense control. (Note: The results in this report are corrected for sales taxes reported in 2018 and the first half of 2019. Starting in January 2020, sales tax will not appear in the budget or profit and loss statements but posted in the balance sheet as a liability.)

For the year 2019: ●! Total income of $112,400 was $6,600 lower than our goal of $119,000 and $10,100

lower than the 2018 result.&●! Total expenses of $95,400 were $22,800 lower than goal and $20,900 lower than the

previous year.&●! Net income of $16,400 exceeded goal by $16,000, was $14,800 higher than 2018 and the

highest in Woods Hall history; the previous record of $9,000 was set in 2011. &●! The checkbook balance on December 31, 2019 was a record $41,500 and $22,800 more

than at year-end 2018. &

On the income side: ●! Total sales of $81,400 were $1,400 less than the 2018 result and $3,600 below goal. &●! Contributions from individuals and foundations of $22,900 continued to play an

important role in our success, comprising 20 percent of total income. &●! Individual donations of $15,700 were $6,700 less than the 2018 result and $4,300

less than goal, a shortfall reflecting the lack of a spring fundraising appeal. !●! Grants totaled $7,300 compared to $7,800 in 2018. &

●! Classes made a 68 percent profit while materials sold and memberships exceeded studio expenses by $2,750. &

On the expense side: ●! Payments to artisans of $51,700 were $5,600 less than 2018 and $7,800 lower than

planned, reflecting lower sales. &●! Payroll Expenses of $21,900 were $2,700 lower than 2018 and $10,200 below goal. The

result was due primarily to the absence of a retail manager beginning in October and less than expected need for paid cashiers.&

●! Lower expenses in several other categories -- bank services, fundraising, grants, marketing, office supplies, postage, shop and utilities – totaled $7,600. (Note: $2,600 in 2019 grant funds not expended in the fiscal year will be carried forward into 2020.) &

Altar!Guild!is!an!extension!of!the!Worship!Committee.!!The!mission!of!the!Guild!is!to!enhance!the!experience!of!worship!through!dedicated!service.!The!Guild!presently!has!six!members:!Michael!Childers,!Cindy!Dalzell,!Dawn!Michaels,!Penny!Nelson,!Susan!Sabre,!and!Joan!Watts.!Volunteers!are!always!welcome.!Duties!include!preparing!the!altar!with!appropriate!church!calendar!paraments,!providing!appropriate!décor!for!the!altar!(flowers!or!candles),!preparing!the!elements!for!Holy!Communion!and!removing!of!same!after!the!church!service.!A!more!detailed!list!of!duties!and!responsibilities!can!be!found!in!the!St.!John’s!handbook.!Although!the!coronavirus!has!required!us!to!move!to!online!only!worship,!our!Altar!Guild!has!continued!!We!are!so!grateful!for!the!Guild's!members!who!faithfully!attend!to!the!parameters,!flowers!and!candles!even!as!we!are!not!together!in!body!as!we!are!appreciating!seeing!these!familiar!and!liturgically!appropriate!elements!during!the!onlie!worship!services.!Joan%Watts,%Chair.!

!Bazaar!Committee!

As!I!am!sure!you!know,!because!of!Covid,!the!Council!made!the!decision!to!not!have!the!bazaar!this!year.!!Last!year,!the!Bazaar!brought!in!just!over!$23,000.!In!our!annual!budget,!we!usually!place!an!amount!of!$17,000!as!income!from!the!bazaar.!For!2020,!without!the!bazaar,!we!are!certainly!short!that!amount!for!income!to!the!church.!!In!addition!to!the!bazaar,!during!the!past!9!years,!we!have!been!given!gifts!to!the!church!of!boats,!cars,!mopeds,!etc.!We!have!sold!these!items!separately!from!the!bazaar!and!they!have!totaled!over!$76,000,!which!helps!with!our!general!fund.!!Recently,!a!generous!donor!gave!us!a!SeaTDoo!boat!which!is!in!the!parking!lot!across!from!the!church.!!This!summer,!we!are!having!a!"Ghost!Bazaar".!This!boat!is!the!start!of!our!"Ghost!Bazaar"!for!2020.!Please!consider!giving!a!donation!to!the!church!for!what!you!might!have!spent!at!our!annual!event.!It!will!certainly!help!with!the!lost!income!from!our!regular!bazaar.!Our!goal!is!to!raise!$10,000!and!this!recent!gift!of!this!boat!is!the!start.!Please!mark!your!donation!"Ghost!Bazaar".!!Bill!Green!History!of!Bazaar!Profits!1993! $2,530!! ! 2002! $4,398!! ! 2011! $10,358!

Starting!this!summer,!articles!signed!by!Chairman,!Nile!Norton,!but!written!by!several!“ghost”!writers!will!highlight!material!from!the!old!Lighthouse!newsletters,!personal!stories!from!the!congregation,!and!other!historical!sources,!allowing!many!voices!to!spread!the!news!of!the!Centennial.!!!!Event!Naming!Discussion:!Finding!that!the!church!has!provided!both!spiritual!growth!and!spirited!activities!through!the!years,!the!combination!of!two!suggested!Names,!“A!Century!of!Spiritual!Nurture”!and!“100!Years!of!Island!Spirit”!resulted!in!a!new!name:!“A!Century!of!Island!Spirit.”!Some!discussion!on!the!perceived!notion!that!“Come!to!the!Lakeshore”!might!exclude!those!who!don’t!live!on!the!Lakeshore,!we!agreed!that!during!the!summer!months!this!year,!we!would!reTaddress!this!matter!and!determine!the!overall!event!name.!So,!if!you!have!suggestions!for!a!catchy!name!for!the!Centennial!Celebration,!it!is!not!too!late!to!add!your!creative!touch!!Consider!these!guidelines:!!!

Rachel%Bauman,%Pastor!!Food!Shelf!Ministry!“For#I#was#hungry,#and#you#gave#me#something#to#eat,#I#was#thirsty,#and#you#gave#me#something#to#drink……Truly#I#tell#you,#whatever#you#do#for#the#least#of#these,#you#do#for#me.”!Matthew!25.!!!St.!John’s,!a!church!for!the!whole!community.!This!is!especially!true!during!times!of!crisis,!like!a!pandemic.!As!we!watched!the!developing!responses!to!the!pandemic!back!in!March!of!this!year,!we!saw!how!quickly!it!impacted!our!island!community!when!small!businesses!closed,!and!a!number!of!islanders!lost!their!jobs.!The!Church!Council!knew!we!needed!to!act!quickly!to!ensure!that!people!would!be!okay.!This!included!developing!a!“Food!Support!Team”!to!keep!the!St.!John’s!food!shelf!up!and!running,!and!to!get!the!word!out!to!our!broader!community.!!!For!many!years,!the!St.!John’s!food!shelf!has!been!restocked!and!cared!for!by!church!and!community!members!who!have!faithfully!traveled!to!grocery!stores!on!the!mainland!and!returned!with!food!items!for!our!community.!In!recent!years,!this!has!included!Sue!Brenna,!Gwen!SmithPatterson,!and!Penny!Gill,!just!to!name!a!few.!With!the!pandemic!upon!us,!we!agreed!that!it!was!no!longer!as!safe!to!be!making!these!regular!trips!to!the!mainland!and!large!stores,!so!we!needed!to!come!up!with!a!new!strategy.!It!now!takes!the!cooperative!effort!of!four!of!us,!Ron!Harrold,!Julie!Stryker,!Denise!Hardie,!and!me,!Debbie!Knopf,!to!do!the!work!these!great!volunteers!have!done!for!so!long.!!!We!have!seen!the!need!for!food!increase!already!and!anticipate!that!with!a!slower!summer!season,!many!more!in!the!island!community!may!experience!food!scarcity!through!the!coming!year.!We!have!now!been!ordering!food!items!through!Andy’s!IGA,!which!they!then!ship!across!on!the!ferry.!We!also!have!been!ordering!food!items!through!Q!and!Z!Bakery,!here!on!the!island,!who!are!able!to!add!it!to!their!regular!food!orders,!and!have!it!delivered.!We!continue!to!have!a!bit!of!a!struggle!to!provide!much!meat,!as!the!prices!continue!to!rise,!but!are!providing!it!when!we!can.!!!Recently!however!we!were!extremely!excited!when!we!received!a!call!from!the!commercial!fishermen!over!in!Red!Cliff.!They!donated!a!total!of!250!pounds!of!whitefish!to!our!community,!which!provided!great!feasting!here!on!Madeline!!What!a!marvelous!gift!!!We!have!now!added!a!new!component!to!our!efforts!to!build!food!sustainability!to!our!island!community.!We!have!received!several!generous!donations!that!are!allowing!us!to!support!those!who!are!growing!food!here!on!the!island.!We!have!been!able!to!channel!funds!to!the!Community!Gardens!to!build!its!capacity!to!grow!more!food!for!all\!to!support!the!remodeling!of!a!wagon!to!become!a!Food!Stand!where!island!growers!can!market!their!produce\!to!purchase!materials!and!equipment!that!will!allow!people!to!use!the!church!kitchen!to!preserve!the!food!from!gardens!for!the!winter\!and!to!help!fund!the!purchase!of!an!old,!but!working!grain!drill!to!enhance!the!hay!production!and!the!use!of!cover!crops!on!the!island.!We!know!that!feeding!island!critters!good!quality!hay!will!help!in!creating!good!compost!to!build!the!soils!that!will!grow!our!food.!In!this!endeavor,!we!added!a!fifth!member!to!our!team,!Regina!Laroche!Theune,!who!has!gathered!information!from!island!growers!about!the!supports!that!will!best!help!them.!!!For!those!who!support!this!effort!through!their!generous!donations,!a!BIG!THANK!YOU!from!all!of!us!!!As!we!navigate!our!way!through!these!challenging!times,!building!community!is!always!a!rewarding!and!worthwhile!cause.!Debbie%Knopf,%Council%President%!Health!Ministries!

This!past!year!provide!many!opportunities!for!adult!education!and!spiritual!development.!Wednesday!Soup!Suppers!(October!T!March)!consisted!of!shared!meals,!fellowship,!and!discussions!on!a!variety!of!subjects!initiated!by!different!community!members.!Pastor!Rachel!led!Friday!morning!Bible!study!each!week.!Additionally,!there!were!several!oneTday!retreats:!one!during!Advent,!one!during!Lent!and!one!in!the!Fall!coTled!by!Rachel!and!Nicole!Pugliese.!Additional!opportunities!for!adult!fellowship!and!spiritual!discovery!were!found!in!the!monthly!Full!Moon!Circles!facilitated!by!Julie!Stryker,!and!in!the!weekly!Stories!of!our!Hearts!gatherings!facilitated!by!Penny!Gill.!

The!Utterback!Scholarship!is!a!scholarship!granted!to!those!pursuing!post!high!school!education.!!Scholarships!are!issued!from!the!accumulated!interest!on!funds!managed!by!the!United!Church!of!Christ!Cornerstone!Fund.!At!present,!scholarships!are!given!out!every!few!years.!The!balance!of!the!five!accounts!in!the!Cornerstone!Fund!as!of!5/31/19!totaled!$4600.00.!!Since!it!was!the!Utterback!family’s!wish!to!only!use!the!interest!of!these!accounts,!it!would!be!nice!at!some!future!date!to!grow!the!capital!to!generate!increased!earned!interest,!thereby!allowing!scholarships!to!be!awarded!more!frequently.!!Members!of!the!Committee!include!Pastor!Rachel,!Jeff!Theune!and!Council!member!and!Ron!Harrold!(term!begins!July!2019).!Members!meets!when!the!interest!is!high!enough!to!distribute.!!!!!Rachel%Bauman,%Pastor!

!Woods!Hall!Board!

The!purpose!of!Woods!Hall!is!to!nurture!creativity!and!community!on!Madeline!Island.!We!provide!opportunities!for!creation!of!crafts!in!a!wellTequipped!facility,!sale!of!crafts!in!the!Woods!Hall!gallery!and!learning!handTcraft!skills.!There!are!68!artisans!working!and/or!selling!at!Woods!Hall!covering!a!variety!of!medium!(weavers,!potters,!authors,!jewelers,!knitters,!candleTmakers,!painters,!cardTmakers!and!others).!

Highlights!from!2019!include!hiring!Tyna!Waterhouse!as!Gallery!and!Retail!Manager,!which!is!now!a!year!round!(30!hours/week)!position,!transitioning!to!a!new!donor/member!database,!developing!a!robust!friend!and!fundTraising!program!and!collaborating!with!St!John’s!Church!Council!to!strengthen!the!relationship!between!St!John’s!and!Woods!Hall.!!

COMMUNITY!LIFE!&!SPIRIT!PILOT!REPORT!2019!by!Regina!M.!Laroche!!We!began!the!St.!John’s!experiment!with!community!outreach!some!time!ago.!Vision!began!prior!to!the!2015!strategic!plan!with!Marina!Lachecki.!Conversation!and!efforts!to!live!into!the!experiment!began!with!Rachel!Baumann’s!arrival.!!

It’s!been!great!to!work!with!the!mandate!to!build!relationships!with!and!serve!Island!families!and!children,!as!well!as!our!Indigenous!sisters!and!brothers!aligned!with!my!understanding!of!living!our!faith.!And!to!do!so!within!St.!John’s!values!of!healing,!sustainability,!and!freedom....!for!individuals,!our!community,!our!beautiful!piece!of!geography,!and!our!world.!!

When!funds!arrived,!last!summer!I!began!exploring!outreach!avenues!that!grew!from!past!experiences!and!relationships!with!Island!families,!Island!and!Bayfield!schools,!artists!and!leaders!T!tribal!and!otherwise,!and!area!churches.!The!emphasis!was!on!arts!and!creativity!for!educational!and!spiritual!growth!and!engagement!(due!to!my!background!and!ongoing!researched!evidence!of!the!arts’!effectiveness).!There!was!also!emphasis!on!building!relationships!with!distrusting!groups!on!the!margins!using!time,!presence,!and!common!project!goals.!Finally,!partnering!with!existing!efforts!was!a!way!of!optimizing!limited!funds!and!people!hours!while!supporting!proven!needs.!!

This!report!begins!with!a!single!page!report!summary!of!monthTbyTmonth!activities!and!numbers!of!people!encountered.!It’s!followed!by!some!things!I!have!learned!from,!and!how!I’ve!been!challenged!in,!this!pilot!program.!Finally,!there!are!several!pages,!also!monthTbyTmonth,!which!are!more!inTdepth!about!activities,!events,!and!connections,!as!well!as!the!numbers!should!you!want!more!detail.!!

Time!with!children!does!wonders!for!one’s!view!of!the!world!and!one’s!day!!And!their!mothers!model!patience,!compassion,!and!freedom.!!

Relationships...%!

It!is!slow!but!rewarding!work!to!build!relationships!and!effective!partnerships.�The!gift!of!a!project!without!limited!lead!time!(e.g.!MLK!Collaboration)!is!that!it!moved!some!connections!and!relationships!more!quickly!than!expected!for!the!sake!of!the!work!to!be!done.!!

The!work!of!connecting!T!especially!with!Tribal!members!(and!our!shyest!children)!T!meant!I!needed!to!show!up,!often!faceTtoTface.!To!seek!help,!learn!how!to!request!involvement,!or!how!to!offer!Asema!(tobacco!offering),!I!had!to!take!time.!I!had!to!seek!out!elders!at!places!of!their!convenience.!I!had!to!wait!for!their!stories!and!timing.!I!had!to!be!available!when!they!reached!out.!!

This!brings!me!to!one!of!the!biggest%challenges...!One!does!not!build!relationships!on!a!timeline,!pushing!“pause”!when!a!pilot!program!ends.!Appearing!for!a!project,!and!then!disappearing!only!reinforces!the!distrust!that!we!are!trying!so!hard!to!dismantle.!Mutually!beneficial!projects!are!great!ways!to!grow!relationships,!but!these!tender!relationships!cannot!themselves!be!treated!as!projects.!!

A!poignant!example!of!this!played!out!with!the!“Alliance!for!Justice.”!After!meeting!and!connecting!with!the!people!behind!this!HoTChunk!initiative!to!share!experiences!about!the!destruction!and!loss!related!to!the!Doctrine!of!Discovery,!I!reiterated!that!there!might!not!be!funds!in!place!for!me!to!continue!exploring!our!partnership.!I!thought!since!they!were!part!of,!and!working!within,!the!UCC!Wisconsin!Conference!they!would!understand!pilot!programs!and!funding!gaps.!Instead,!the!director!continued!to!insist!that!they!valued!my!presence!and!input!and!that!my!being!nonTnative!should!not!get!in!the!way!of!working!together.!The!lesson:!without!space!for!commitment!and!time!it!can!be!damaging!to!reach!out!to!people!and!communities!who!have!a!history!with!broken!relationships!and!promises!!

The!short!term!nature!of!the!CL&Sp!pilot!is!very!challenging!to!real!relationship!and!community!building.!I!described!above!the!implications!when!working!with!two!different!Indigenous!communities.!!

There!is!a!related!challenge!for!working!with!our!children!and!families.!Showing!up!for!a!few!weeks!as!guest!artist!or!project!artist!works!within!the!structure!of!some!programs!such!as!TAP!or!the!school.!It!can!be!different!when!one!is!attempting!to!offer!support!or!build!connections!with!a!less!structured!effort!that!has!fewer!resources!(and!higher!need)!like!the!Childcare!CoTop.!!

There!is!the!challenge!of!offering!support,!and!also!honoring!the!needs!and!autonomy!of!the!mothers!who!shaped!the!coTop.!This!was!a!limitedTtime!pilot!effort!with!limited!funds.!I!was!well!under!halfTtime!hours!with!a!number!of!other!outreach!priorities.!Initially!I!showed!up!to!the!coTop!to!watch,!learn,!help,!and!listen!to!the!needs!the!moms!expressed.!I!intentionally!did!not!promise!regular!presence!because!I!lacked!the!hours!and!the!people!power!to!do!so!reliably.!Eventually!my!hope!was!to!get!flexible!volunteer!support!that!could!selfTsustain!even!if!this!position!were!no!longer!funded.!!

My!preTIsland!experience!with!creating,!coordinating,!and!participating!in!children’s!programs!taught!me!the!value!of!parenting!support!and!structure!for!children,!parents,!teachers,!and!volunteers.!Such!programming!is!desirable,!but!without!consistent!coordination!and!onTgoing!peopleTpresence!support!for!the!moms!and!the!program,!the!structure!with!lessons!and!activities!would!become!a!burden!to!the!moms.!!

Three!incredible!volunteers!have!stepped!up!to!support!the!coTop.!A!number!of!great!volunteers!have!also!helped!with!the!Treaty!Day!Events,!and!the!“Wednesdays!in!December”!family!and!community!winter/Advent!events.!This!is!so!core!to!our!outreach.!!

One!of!the!goals!of!CL&Sp!is!to!have!the!relationships!that!get!built!go!beyond!the!CL&Sp!position.!Volunteers!are!the!through!line.!They!bring!needed!support,!they!bring!human!interaction,!and!bonds!that!strengthen!ties!between!entire!communities.!!

Challenge:%telling%the%story,%inviting%involvement...%!

There!were!times!when!I!knew!the!invitation!for!involvement!needed!to!go!beyond!our!pews!and!our!newsletter.!However,!lacking!clear!and!official!Council!or!Church!approval,!and!thus!permission!to!put!the!word!out,!I!did!not!feel!comfortable!shaping!or!expanding!a!story.!Also!and!again,!the!fact!that!this!was!a!short!term!pilot!made!me!cautious!about!putting!much!information!forward.!I!did!not!(and!do!not)!know!what!I!and!the!church!can!commit!to.!We!would!(as!with!the!

coTop)!need!to!be!strategic!about!creating!selfTsustaining!models!of!care!and!support.!And,!generally,!with!the!fullness!and!demands!of!daily!life,!most!models!still!need!some!oversight!and!attention.!!

I!am!very!aware!that!I!did!not!give!adequate!attention!to!the!LaPointe!School!Committee’s!new!building!dreams.!The!school!and!its!vibrancy!are!critical!to!the!life!of!our!community,!and!our!church!congregation!needs!to!have!close!ties!to!this!conversation!T!to!support,!offer!wisdom!or!services,!to!pray!and!offer!our!hearts.!There!are!young!overTbooked!parents!working!diligently!on!this.!And!there!are!additional!possibilities.!Maybe!this!is!where!more!volunteers!come!in...!more!hours?!We!are!fortunate!to!have!a!Council!President!and!other!church!members!involved!with!the!La!Pointe!School!Committee!and!School!Board,!so!it!could!be!a!matter!of!structuring!communication.!!
