3D Triangulation Theory

• Projecting a narrow band of light onto a three-dimensionally shaped surface produces a line of illumination that appears distorted from other perspectives than that of the projector, and can be used for an exact geometric reconstruction of the surface shape.

Laser’s in Vision

• In today’s world of expanding 3D vision systems, the camera and laser are equal partners in the accuracy, stability and repeatability of the measurements made and used by the applications.

• The requirements on the laser for power, pointing and electrical stability are far above a typical illumination system requirements. Having a source which produces very high power density, very thin measurement cross sections with a uniform return that does not mask the profile of the object is critical to maximizing the advantage of this approach to non contact measurement

• The availability of lasers that generate structured lines is as broad as it has ever been. The technology and advancement of these lasers has stayed the same for many years now, not giving the user the ability to leverage this portion of the system beyond its current technology.

StingRay Advantage - Electronics

• The StingRay laser system is endowed with advanced and highly stable electronics. These electronics create an electrical working environment that is extremely accurate, stable and contributing very little noise to the system.

• Focus Areas:• Input Voltage flexibility• Low electrical noise• Calibrated external photo feedback for CP• Modulation• Communications• End of Life indication

• Our electronics provide industry leading performance for constant power modulation at >500 kHz with high linearity, fast response times and fully reproduced waveforms for maximum flexibility to dynamically control the laser source in any given application.

• A unique feature in the Analog Modulation is the ability to manage a PWM style feedback as well as mixed mode modulation/power scaling

StingRay Advantage - Optics

• Coherent has invested almost two years to re-invent the design, manufacturing and testing of common Powell optics. This new optical system provides an automated fabrication and testing process to ensure the most accurate and repeatable optical system possible.

• Features:• 100% of the line is usable• 95% Contained Power• +/- 7.5% Uniformity• 0.1% Straightness• Higher repeatability• Better safety class management • Less time to integrate

• The repeatability of these laser lines from laser to laser, enables the user to quickly and repeatable set up the complete sensor integration limiting additional calibration or compensation routines providing a more repeatable sensor with less effort.

StingRay Advantage – The Customer

• The features and performance of the StingRay laser provide current and future benefits to the Machine Vision community in multiple ways.

• First the accuracy and repeatability of the laser lines generates a return signal that is not biased by the line profile rather the profile of the item under investigation.

• This accuracy generates repeatability in the systems creating better sensor to senor accuracy and repeatability to the user, effectively eliminating the need for additional integration time and specific calibrations.

• With the advancements in the optical system, the StingRay delivers >95% of the laser power into the measurement line dramatically improving signal to noise, use of power and better control of safety classifications.
