High school is tough for teen-agers these days,

with common core, sport and academic pressures, and a new factor that has become more common in teenagers today--part time jobs. Although part time jobs are a great way to learn responsibility and budget-ing, some teens say it is a sacrifice toward their so-cial life. BCHS students tell what it’s like to have a part time job in high school and how it affects their life out-

side the work place.

Twitter is a very popular social media that a lot of people use, from teenagers to celebrities. How twitter was really

founded is different from what people say it is. The real story is that this guy Noah had a product where you could call a phone

number and it could turn your message into a MP3 hosted on the internet called, he brought that idea into Odeo. One of the men that was working on Odeo was an employee that worked with google; his name was Evan Williams. Evan sold his

apartment and bought a nice house but, he wanted to put his old

apartment to work. There was maybe four of them working on

it then, they started hiring more people. By 2005 the fans were really interested in it. They wanted to clean up Odeo and they asked their crew to get into groups and work on some ideas. Noah started talking about the idea of status and he really liked that idea. Sometime in February 2006 his idea was presented to the rest of the company. They fi rst called it Twttr. Then eventually called it Twitter.

Who has tweeted the most? Her username is @Yougak-duan_00, she has tweeted 36,402,262 tweets before Twitter suspended her ac-count, likely because of the excessive tweeting.

Who has the most fol-lowers in the world? That belongs to the fa-mous Katy Perry. She has 59 million people following her.

Three years, two months and one day: The time it took from

the fi rst tweet to the billionth tweet

Twitter sees more than 500 million tweets a day now.

The “unfollow” button was almost called “leave.”

Twitter reaches more users than any other social net-work in Japan, comScore says.

After I ask a stranger if I can pet their dog and they say yes, I like to respond, “I’ll keep that in mind” and walk off.

It may not always be fun or you may not want to do it, but you have to do it to pass your class. If you don’t get things done at school that are due soon, you can work on it at home (if you have the virtual), or you can stay after or get help at school. If you play vid-eo games after school you have to make time for your homework. You can do it when you get home so you don’t have to wor-ry about it later. If you know how long it will take you to do it, you can do it before you go to bed. Sometimes I even do it at lunch the next day if my class is after lunch but that doesn’t always work out. You may forget or not have enough time (that has happened to me a few times). The easiest thing is to do the work when you first get home so you don’t have to worry about it later. If you ever happen to not get work

done but you have most of it done, you should turn it in (so you don’t

get a zero). Sometimes you can’t make time to play because you’re working on your homework the whole time you’re home

and whatever else like eating showering etc. You can’t always make time, sometimes you just

have to get done what has to be done, setting pri-orities. Especially if you have dead-lines to meet(like this project). You

have to try as hard as you can. I fell behind on this project, not wanting to do it and not knowing what to do.

My extracurricular activities include volleyball, cheerleading, dance, drama club, art club, Nation-al Honors Society, Student Council Vice-President, Prom Chair, work-ing TWO jobs, getting in volunteer hours, completing every assignment that my teacher has EVER assigned me, and still having a social life. Now I have never been one to sit at home for fi ve hours a night and just play video games. I have also NEVER been one to sit at home on my rear-end and not do any of my homework. How a person becomes a freshman in high school and still doesn’t complete their assignments is beyond me, but hey, to each their own. My point is this, high school is not hard. I have had straight A’s for most of my high school career, besides that pesky Geometry class (thanks Mrs. Schenk!) and I have always been this busy. I never stop going, but that is completely fi ne because it is all my choice! I love having two jobs and being in every activity that I am in. Some argue that it’s hard to bal-ance video games and homework may be convincing to some, but all I have to say is, be careful who you complain to. You may think your video game playing schedule is hard, but believe me, other’s have it harder. Just do your homework and don’t complain, PLEASE.

Fire & IceBIG DANCE 2015

Big Dance is a performance put on by the high school cheerleading squad during basketball season. The squad asks middle school cheerleaders to join them as well as anyone interest-ed that goes to Brown County High School, boys and girls alike. The practices take hours and emotions are high during this time period, but it is worth it.

“The Big Dnace was a fantabulous

and exhilarating experience.”-Blake Law

“The best part is defi nitely getting to per-form and after all your hardwork in prac-tices, seeing all the stunts hit perfectly and everything looking great!“

-Hallie Laning

“The best part of the Big Dance is watching it transform from nothing into the finished dance performances. -Faith Mountain

“During Big Dance I got to see what it would be like to be on the high school cheer squad and experience the excitement of dancing for a pumped crowd at a home game.” -Sophie Fanshier

“It was an amaz-ing experience that taught me teamwork.” -Marissa Cowan

“It’s all fun until you get punched in the face.” -Michael Buss

Sophie Fanshier“I love bringing together all the cheerleaders from middle and high school and high school students to make an awesome dance that we can do more than our normal stunt-ing in.”

The History of Farm Equipment

We all know of the multi-billionaire company of John Deere and that they produce some of the most advance farm equipment to this day, but we never stop to think about what they started out with. John Deere was the pioneer of farm equipment by creating the steel plow and many other harvesting tools. His idea has grown into the company we see today, and many other com-panies have also perfected the art of creating farm machinery. Every year an event is held at Louisville Kentucky that provides an overview of what exactly these companies will be producing in the future.

“They don’t make farm equipment like they used too. Today’s equipment makes it a heck of a lot easier, but break down just as much.” (Lawrence Wiese)

New Equipment vs Old Equipment

Obviously the newer equipment that a manu-facturer provides is going to be better, but way back when they didn’t under-stand

much about technology they didn’t have the luxury of automated tractors and navigation. This made things much slower and less productive but they still got the job done. In some places old equip-ment is still used by people such as the Amish, or Mennonites.

How Farm Equipment Changes the Game in AgricultureThe cutting edge technol-ogy of today has been a serious game changer for farmers around the world.

The leap from horses running the equip-ment to engine

power has made things much easier for any farmer and they will tell you that. You may come across someone who used the old equipment which we now see in sales auctions going for high prices. My grandpa is one of those people and he could talk to you for hours about the old days. Collec-tors of antique tractors see value in them as there is not many left and in a way they preserve some of our history.

Looking to the Future of Farming

Today’s technology isn’t perfect and has it’s limits, but it is a manufactures job to see to those defects in technology and improve on them. This is a global effort by countries around the world and it is when people put their heads together that they achieve something great which happens in farming a great deal. We have some of the greatest minds working in the farming industry creat-ing the machinery you see today and they work just as hard as the farmers who use them. The farming in-dustry has always been on the rise and hasn’t looked on stopping any time soon as generation after generation has taken up the reigns of their farms or have contributed in some other way to help their families. Most who were raised on a farm don’t know any different than farming for the better.

Big families or small families? Some might say having a small, close-knit family is enough

for them and just right, that having a big family would be overwhelming and diffi cult. I, for one, love having a big family not only on my dad’s side (in the picture), but also my mom’s side which is quite extensive. Yes, it can be diffi cult at times trying to remember names and how they are related to you and trying to all gather for big events and holidays, but you are surround-ed by so many different people that will support you. To me, having 8 uncles and 6 aunts as well as 30 fi rst cousins is perfectly normal and I wouldn’t want it any other way. I can’t imagine ever having a family smaller than the one I have now. Events such as Christmases, Thanksgivings and other gather-

ings would feel empty without an overfl owing house full of laughter, joy, and memories. The ad-vantages of having such a large family is not only great support but many different people with

different views on life situations to give different pieces of advice on. They’re al-ways there for you when others are not and that’s the great thing, to al-ways have some-body to turn to in good times and in bad. There really

isn’t any downsides to having quite a big family like mine besides fi nding a place big enough to hold everybody for events. In my family, you just get used to being squeezed between a cousin, aunt, or uncle on the couch in the living room, sitting on the fl oor in the back room, or sitting on a chair around the big dining table.

For most of your high school career, you are faced with the pressing question of what to do after high school. It seems as though everyone around you has every-

thing planned out to a “t” and knows exactly what they want to do...but what about you? As time in school progresses the single question “what do you want to do after high school?” becomes less of simple inference, and more of an overwhelming and burdensome decision. Some, as said, reach decisions, and others take just a bit longer to find that thing that makes them tick. Like your distant relatives and closest friends I now ask the question...what do you want to do once you are finally out of here?

People may not want to admit to it, but there is so much unnecessary drama in schools these days. When new kids come in to the school, other kids tend to talk bad about them by making fun of what they wear, or how skinny they are. Nobody knows what happened to people in their childhood, or maybe what they are going through now. You’ve probably never thought about it this way, but what if that kid you just made fun of was abused as a child, or maybe their family is very poor because they are go-ing through a hard time and you just made fun of him because he has no Under Armour clothing. Bullying others does not make you and your group of friends cool. Maybe you are mad at someone so you and a group of your friends talk bad about that person. But did you know that people make mistakes? No matter how perfect

you think your expensive clothes or beau-tiful hair makes you, you’ll make mistakes, and sooner or later, you will regret them. Remember that kid you made fun of at school today because he had ratty clothes? Take a step in his shoes and see how funny

it is. It is highly unlikely that kid loves being made fun of just because he

doesn’t hang with the “cool” people or because he doesn’t meet the ridiculous “standards” for you and your group of friends. NEWS

FLASH! When everyone is out of high school and grown up, it won’t

even matter anymore. And if you were the one doing the bullying, you will

most likely regret how you acted to oth-ers. In 20 years, people won’t remember what you wore, what you did, how your hair or makeup looked, they will remem-ber the type of person you were and how you made an effect on their life; good or bad.

The Life of a Railroader

After high school most people go

off to college, go into the mili-

tary, or enter the work force

but my brother Charlie Buss decided to

join the railroad and become a conduc-

tor. People were always asking him what

he was going to do after he graduated

and he wasn’t too sure until he got into

the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Rail-

road (BNSF). Charlie got on the website

with a friend of his that worked for BNSF

and they filled out

his application for

BNSF. They got the

application filled out

and sent in and then

about a month after

graduation Charlie

got an email that said he would start his

training in Galesburg, Illinois. When it got

time for Charlie to leave it was hard on

the family to have him leave to join the

railroad but it is a blessing that a small

town guy got a big time job on the rail-

road. The training and everything has paid

off because after he got through every-

thing he was able to get a job opening to

become an engineer. When you take on

this task it is a very long process but it

can be done. Charlie is now going through

By: Kelly Buss

schooling that the railroad provides. He

will spend three weeks in Overlandpark,

Kansas and then come back to Galesburg

for fifteen weeks of training and school-

ing. Once Charlie gets done with all of this

he will be an engineer for the Burlington

Northern Santa Fe Railroad. Charlie is also

one of the youngest members on BNSF’s

crew. I always ask him what it is like to be

a railroader and he always tells me that it

is one of the best decisions that he has

ever made. Charlie

also told me that

there are some ups

and down to being a

railroader. You have

to be committed,

you have to give up

partying, and you have to be ready to get

called to go into work at any time of the

day. Giving up those things don’t sound

fun but the railroad does not accept you

if you go into work dog tired because

you were up partying all night. BNSF has

a very strict policy on what you do while

working because you are transport-

ing millions of dollars worth of different

things. Being a railroader might be hard

but after you get going with the job it is

worth it in the end.

Gerbils Make Great PetsGerbils Make Great Pets By: Abigail Decker

I had seven gerbils, but six now. My sister got a baby gerbil for her birthday about two years

ago. I got the mother of the baby. Two days later, the mother started having babies. She had sev-en, but one died right after. They were all girls so we kept them. We have three cages. One for my sister’s gerbil, Princess, because she could not behave herself. Twixie has the second one and she was constantly grooming the other four gerbils and they didn’t like it. The o t h - e r cage has Mama Mia, Muff, Chipet, and Snug-gles. Buttercup just re-cently died. It gets interest-ing when we have the gerbils out in their ex-ercise balls. You have to watch where you step, because they don’t know where they are going and they go pretty fast. They like to bump into things and get stuck on cords laying on the ground. We have to get them out pretty much every day, because they will pick on each other if we don’t. It is their exercise for the day. Their cages need to be cleaned once a week. The old bedding needs to be thrown out and new bedding needs to be put in. After we clean the cages, we put on plastic tubes so that they can have exercise. When we take the gerbils out of their balls, on the cleaning

day, we put the gerbils in a dust bath to clean them. Gerbils love to chew on toilet paper tubes and paper towel tubes. We also give them any carbon board household boxes. Their tails are delicate. Tails help them keep their balance. The very tip of the tail will give away if you pull too hard. This helps them survive, because when predators grab their tails, they can still get away.

There will be bone showing, but it will either dry up and

break off or the gerbil will gnaw it off. The

tail will just be a little shorter. Two of my gerbils have lost the

end of their tails. Gerbils are

great pets. I love my ger-bils. My favorite gerbil is

Muff. I al- ways call her my spoiled brat. They are lovable and are so cute. Each of my gerbils has their own unique personality.

To Read or Not to Read?To Read or Not to Read?

Some people our age hate reading. They might think it’s pointless or time-consuming. Some-times they can’t find a good book to read. A good book to read would be “The Hobbit” by J.R.R. Tolkien. The book “The Hobbit” is about a hob-bit name Bilbo Baggins who goes on a journey with a troup of thirteen dwarves. Bilbo has to find and test his courage along with the wizard named Gandalf the Grey. “The Hobbit” is a must-read for all teens. The author Tolkien used teen and adult humor to write this fantastic story. I highly encourage all teens to read this book.

A good series for all readers is the Harry Potter series. This is a story about a boy named Harry Potter who finds out that he is a wizard. He must use his courage and the help of his friends to be able to defeat “He Who Must Not Be Named.” This series draws the at-

tention of readers by using main ideas designed to thrill. The Harry Potter series was written for children of all ages. These books also have movies for each book. I highly recommend

this series.

more popular than them whether it be socially, athletic

ability, etc.

Chances are you do not consider yourself to be the

most popular person in the high school. Some days you

might just think, man I wish I could be him/her for just

one day to get the experience of what it would be like

in their shoes.

Suppose you’re a guy and you look up to that star

football jock that can get any girl he wants. You’d be in-

vited to all the “popular kid” parties and you’d never be

wishing that that pretty girl sitting across from you in

math class would show just the slightest interest in you.

On the other hand, you’re a girl that wishes that you

could be as pretty as that girl that has all of the guys

drooling over her. She just has that eff ortless beauty

that everyone wishes that they could have.

As wonderful as both of these situations sound the

lives of these people are probably not as perfect as they

may seem. That football jock may look at someone

who is considered nerdy and wish that he was as smart

as them and that pretty girl might not be respected by

guys because they only want her for the wrong reasons.

She very well probably wishes that she could just escape

the constant stares and have a happy life and get a boy-

friend that would genuinely care for her.

Some people also wish that they could be a famous

actor or actress such as Tom Cruise or Jennifer Aniston.

These stars have millions of people that look up to them

as people because they see them on their television

screens. However, there is also a down side to this life-

style because they cannot even walk outside their front

door to get the mail without the stares of paparazzi or

the blinding light of camera fl ashes.

Never waste your life away wishing that you could be

somebody that you think has a better life than you. Lots

of people think it would be fun to be someone else but

in reality the best person that you can be is yourself.

Muscle Cars New to OldMuscle Cars New to Old

Through the years muscle cars have became a passion for many of people. The muscle car era began in the mid 60’s to early 70’s and became some of the most wanted cars to this day to own. The reason the muscle car era stopped in the mid 70’s was the fuel changed from leaded to unleaded gas this made it a lot harder to get horsepower out of the engines that came in the cars. Today the gas is still unleaded, but the muscle cars are back. The reason behind them coming back is they have realized how

in demand these cars have become so the car company’s decided it would be smart to make new versions of these ionic cars. The car com-pany’s have made the cars very similar to there past model. Millions of people still enjoy and fanaticize over these cars to this day and many of them have decided to get the new models so they don’t have to worry about the older cars problems. The old muscles cars are still very ionic and many collectors spend a lot of money to be able to have these historic cars.

Imagine that you were born minutes apart from someone else. Imagine that you had to share

everything you own with another person, includ-ing clothes, a car, and even your secrets. You would have a twin! Having a twin is a mix of things. They know what kind of day you’re having, who you like, what your favorites are, and things you don’t even know about yourself. Growing up as the best friend of a set of twins was hard: they do pretty much everything together. But their rela-tionship is so interesting and fun that it made me

realize that twins are a wonderful thing. There’s a total of three sets of twins at Brown County: Evelyn and Paula Chapman, Hailey and Chloe Al-sup, and Mariah and Joel Stinson. Although these twins share the exact same DNA, they have a lot of differences! Such as something you may not know is Hailey and Chloe are actually fraternal twins, while Evelyn and Paula are identical! Hav-ing a twin is like having an immediate best friend since birth. You will always have someone who is rooting for you to be your best.

State was an incredible environment. It felt like we were on top of the

world. State also brought many nerves, because being one of the top teams in state we knew that we could be playing the top teams as well. Every game we played came down to the end and every game was played with high intensity. We always played together everyone game which is what got us to State. We started off the State tournament play-ing Cham-paign St. Mat-thew. They had a very tall kid who was about 6’5” but we worked to-gether to shut him down and ended up pull-ing out the 43-38 win over the very good 19-7 team. We then went on to play the

team to beat which was the Altamant. They were a very good team and didn’t have

a starter shorter than 6’0”. They were defi nitely big. We fought through the whole game and ended up coming up short to them with a 53-51 fi nal. Alta-mant ended up getting 2nd in State. Our fi nal game together

as 8th graders was a tough one, but we knew that if we stuck to-

gether we could get the win with a 41-39. We then ended up winning 3rd

place in State, and being one of the last two teams in 2A to end our season with a win. This is one of the best feel-ings in the world, which brought us all closer and kept us closer to this day.

Are Shoes Worth the Money? Are Shoes Worth the Money?

People pay big money for shoes and make big money on shoes. Shoes are becoming a huge market and the prices show that. The shoe on the bottom right was sold from Nike for $245 which was retail. The resale the day after was a astounding $5,000 and sold at peaks of $10,000. This is defi nitely a good invest-ment. (possibly one of the best) The shoe located in the middle of the picture retailed for $250 and now resellers are asking $900 or more for these limited shoes. The colorful shoe lo-cated at the bottom left also retailed for $250 and prices have been sky high since. What causes these shoes to be worth the money they are takes a few things. One of the causes is

the amount of shoes Nike releases and how hard they are to get. Another thing that affects the price of the shoe is the hype which is the demand of the shoe. An example of this is if

only 100 pairs of shoes are made and you only have 100 people inter-ested the resell won’t be very high at all. On the other hand if you have 500 pairs of shoes and have 20,000 people that want them the price is going

to go sky high as you can tell what happened with the What the Lebron 10 and the Red October Yeezy 2.

5or$$500 Date?People have many different opinions on how much

money should be spent on a date. According to USA Today, the average amount singles spend on dating over a months time is about $60. I personally think that is a good amount over a month. No one wants to go on the same date multiple times. You need to switch it up some. You could go to a movie and out to eat one night, which would cost around $30. The next date you could go bowling and out to eat, which would cost around or more than $20. There are so many things you could take that special person to do to have fun and get to know them! High schoolers don’t normally have a lot of money. To most girls, it doesn’t mat-ter on how much money you spend. They really just want to spend time with you. I asked 27 people and here’s what

Many say they will get out of small Brown County and move far away. But do they

know where they are going? Graduation time is getting closer every day and with graduation, comes greater things beyond high school. The time has come for our senior class to split up af-ter thirteen, maybe even more, years together. The greater question is, where will they be going after high school? This is the question that every senior, every year, since the begin-ning of time has had to decide. Some might be going to college, some might not be going, and there is a variety of different schooling that you can choose. It is usually hard to pick what you

The kids in the senior class this year are ambitious and high-quality work producers. They have the highest PSAE scores in Brown County history, maintain good grades and sports and extra-curricular activities, and volunteer as much as possible! When push comes to shove, this class pulls through and makes it work. One thing’s for sure, the seniors will go out with a bang and you will remember them all!

1818Pros and Cons Pros and Cons of Turning. . . of Turning. . .

Turning eighteen could be an exciting birthday for some and just another birthday for others. There are many pros about becoming a legal adult, but there are some cons too. While talking to some of the seniors here at Brown County they have agreed that there are more pros than there are cons for this milestone age. Some of the pros would be the privilege for those who choose to buy tobacco. Along with that they get to buy lot-tery tickets and have the right to buy a gun. One of the most favored pro is the fact that there is no curfew anymore. Turning eighteen is also a sign that they are one step closer to being done with high school and providing for themselves.

Most high school students hate getting in trouble. There is the tendency that others in the community label them as “the trouble makers.”

Turning 18 means stronger conse-quences when it comes to the law. You can be tried as an adult on most legal matters and no longer can be consid-ered a “minor”. Some parents feel that turning 18 means their children should take on many more responsibilities and fi nan-cial matters than they had before. Some have to start paying rent or their insur-ance or maybe even for their car. Many more fi nancial responsibilities start appearing for these new adults. Turning 18, graduating from high school means life is defi nitely chang-

ing. Paths must be chosen and new roads trav-eled. Turning eighteen really is a huge stepping stone.

Quiz Bowl is a great after school activity to get involved in. Why? It doesn’t take too much of your free time and you get to learn new things. These new things include: math, science, history, and much more. Each player on the Quiz Bowl team is given a subject that he/she is the best at. The coaches Mrs. Veatch and Ms Frey pick who will play on the varsity team. The varsity players are picked based on their knowledge of their subject-duringQuiz Bowl practices. Sometimes we have to split up the Quiz Bowl

team because we play two matches at the same time in differ-ent classrooms. After the matches, the Quiz

On February 15, I took a train to Chicago. I spent the day at Shedd Aquarium.

I have gone there twice now. I love going there. There are so many different and cool fish. There are also penguins, sea otters, sea lions, dolphins, and beluga whales. My fa-vorite is the sea otters. My sister got to touch a star fish. Shedd Aquarium is great for every age. It is a great learning expe-rience. They also rescue sea creatures who can no longer survive in their original habi-tat. Cruz, a sea lion, was rescued due to be-ing blind. He was twenty months old when they rescued him. When the veterinarians took an X-ray, they found bullet fragments that had destroyed his right eye and blinded the left. He now has to rely his sense of hear-ing and his sense of smell. Cruz has been living at Shedd Aquarium ever since. Nickel, a sea turtle, was rescued after she was hit by a propeller and cracked open

the underneath of her shell. With this injury, Nickel wasn’t able to propel herself with her hind legs. At the aquarium, she receives exer-cises to strengthen her hind legs so she can swim down to find food. Nickel’s name comes from a nickel lodged in her throat that the

veterinarians found. Kiana, a sea otter, was abandoned before be-ing rescued by Shedd

Aquarium. She was dehydrated and had low blood sugar. Kiana was bottle-fed every four hours and took swimming lessons. She also

gets grooming lessons. Shedd Aquarium is a worthwhile trip. If you ever have a chance, you should go and learn about more rescue stories.

My Softball JourneyBy: Kelly Buss

Ever since I was little I have al-ways played softball whether it was in little league or if it was

in the front yard with my family and that is where I fell in love with the sport. I not only enjoy playing the sport but it also gives me opportuni-ties to meet new friends. Through the years softball has taught me many things like how to handle pres-sure, how to learn from mistakes, and how to have fun. Having fun is the main thing I think about while playing soft-ball because if you aren’t having fun then why are you playing the sport. If it wasn’t for softball then I wouldn’t have the friends that I have today. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for my friends. Once I got to the high school level I didn’t know what I would be get-ting myself into and now that I got

into it I am glad that I am playing. My freshman year everybody would tell me that I was going to catch on the varsi-ty team and I always told them that we

will have to see about that. I always dreamed of starting as the var-sity catcher and my first game of my high school career I got to start varsity as the catcher. I

was very nervous about it because I was playing with girls from ages fif-

teen to eighteen. Then after a few games I got very comfortable catch-ing and both my fresh-

men and sophomore year the Lady Hornets Softball team made history by winning re-

gionals for the first time in twenty-five years. Winning

regionals and making it to sectionals two years in a row was the best feel-ing in the world. It felt great to not only be a part of a team but to be

a part of a family. The 2015 softball season will be great and I can’t wait to see what the season has in store for us.

What It’s Like

To Be a CoachW ith the past six years of playing volleyball

and two more years ahead of me, that

sport has always been my pas-

sion. Throughout my years I’ve had a

new coach almost every year. It has al-

ways been a struggle to adapt to differ-

ent coaching styles. The bond o f

the Sophomore girls is very

strong because we have all pretty

much played together from the start.

This year, I was asked by Sandy Prather,

the head coach of 5th and 6th grade vol-

leyball team, to be an assistant coach.

Of course, I said yes. A little into the year,

we had another coach Amanda Kunkel

come in willing to help. Amanda and I

now coach the 5th grade team and San-

dy coaches the 6th. From the first practice,

I’ve had an amazing time with the girls and being

able to bond with each of them. They all dedicate

themselves to anything I tell them on how they can

approve. They are always very respectful to both of

us and care about anything we have to say. The girls

have written me notes thanking me for being their

coach and how much they appreciate me helping

them become better players. The notes they write to

me mean a lot to me because I just love being able

to leave a mark on their lives and help them improve.

Sometimes Amanda and I play with them while

scrimmaging just for fun, and we enjoy ourselves

just as much as them. I have created some very

strong friendships with the girls. They always

make all us coaches very proud whether

we lose or win. The girls mean a lot to me

because I can see potential and strong friend-

ships between them that reminds me of my team

and I. When the girls keep moving up in age, I

plan to always come back and watch them as

much as I can. Not only have I created a

bond with the players, but also the other

coaches. I can only hope that I will have a

chance to continue this with them next year.

From dealing with unsatisfied parents to emotional

players, coaching can also be a lot of stress, but I

wouldn’t trade it for anything. I will always be their

biggest fan.

When film was first introduced oh so many moons ago, people actually believed it would be no more than a fad. They figured, along with many other inven-tions eventually rendered useless, film would come and it would go, fading into

Film has truly stood the test of time and through it we have been introduced to some of the most beautiful, the most funny, the most heart-warming stories the arts could offer. Movies offer the ability to connect with people, to come together in a theater and share an experience, to discuss at your next family dinner a great new film you saw or to find something new to inspire you in the great adventure of life.

A Trip to Louisville Kentucky

What you can fi nd in Louisville

There is plenty to do in Louisville, but really you have to be there at the right place at the right time. The fi rst thing you might want to do is plan ahead for event like the Kentucky Derby or the Grand National Tractor Pull. You can also go see the Louisville Cardinals play whether it is baseball, basketball, or football. There is a wide variety of places to eat ranging from fancy steak houses to white castle, so you won’t run on an empty stomach when staying in the city. You can visit museums like the famous Muhammad Ali museum where many things from his childhood memories are kept. When you have had a long day of explor-ing it is fi t that you stay in a high class hotel like the Gult House, a twin tower building connected by a walkway.

What separates Louis-ville from other cities

First of all it sits on the

Ohio River where a lot of trade takes place and resources are transported on barges. It is the largest city in Kentucky with Lexington being the second largest. It has one of the largest natural forests in the U.S. and many different parks. The Louisville Sluggers baseball bats are

made here and can also be purchased. The annual Kentucky Derby is held here as well as the Grand National Tractor Pull and Farm Show. Other activities include touring the city, going to see the Louisville Cardinals play, and going to local restau-rants to eat. They really have just about anything you can think of in cities.

What I Enjoyed when I went to Louisville

Out of all the things I did in Louisville I think my favorite was going to the Tractor Pulls. It was the

you don’t plan ahead. The fi rst things that I would like to do are the things I didn’t do when I was there. Things like taking the time to tour the city, going to the Muhammad

Ali Museum, getting a Louisville Slugger Bat, and going to all the different restaurants. I know that’s a lot to expect, but you want to make the most out of a trip to a place you haven’t been to much or at least that’s what I think.

“The farm show was fun, but the walking not so much. The tractor show was a blowout because I saw nothing but green in the top three spots. Overall I had a good time and driving all the way back home was the hardest part.” (Logan Wiese)

I mean, we’ve all seen your lovey-dovey Instagram posts about how ‘he’s the best boyfriend ever’ and ‘I don’t know what I would do without him,’ but let’s be real. This may be the worst thing to happen in his-tory since World War II (yeah right!), but let’s talk about the good that can come from this! 1) Now, you can hang out with whoever you want, anytime of day you want, anywhere you want! You can lie and say he doesn’t have anything to do with deciding your plans for the night, but we all know that’s not true. 2) Finally, people can walk through the halls without having to dodge, duck, dip, dive, dodge their ways around you. They can walk freely wherever they want! Of course it may be insulting to you when people yell “RED ROVER” and run in between you guys while holding hands, but it’s only because they were late to class... but not anymore, thanks to him! And 3) You can fi nally put your phone down for a minute and not have to worry about the next thing his cheating mouth will say to you. Believe it or not, while your telling him you

love him in the middle of Spanish class, “Mi amor,” everyone else is getting sick of hearing your phone go off. I know this breakup is probably hard for you, but don’t let him make you look weak. He’s doing us all a favor by ending the rela-tionship. Go home and cry to your momma, but don’t let him make you cry at school. You fi x your makeup and get on with your life. You’re an awesome person, own it!

Dear Addy...

DEAR ADDY: Somehow, I always seem DEAR ADDY: Somehow, I always seem to get in trouble for wearing shorts and a to get in trouble for wearing shorts and a tank-top to school, but the administration tank-top to school, but the administration never tell anyone else to change. What never tell anyone else to change. What should I do to make them see that my should I do to make them see that my clothes aren’t as revealing as they think? clothes aren’t as revealing as they think? *Hear we go again. I’m all for a little girl power and I fully believe girls should be able to wear shorts and tank-tops whenever it’s warm out. That being said, I DO NOT believe that girls should be able to wear den-im underwear in public. That kind of outfi t is okay for like... well... um... Okay, denim underwear is never okay! Yes, it does get hot in the school during the summer months, but come on! There are plenty of lengths of shorts to get, so fi gure out which ones work at school and don’t work. Now, if your shorts are below your fi ngertips and they tell you to change, you message me again and I will gladly write another stinger article clearly stating the dress code and how you weren’t breaking it. But for now, keep it classy!

DEAR ADDY: I can’t catch a break. Every time I turn the DEAR ADDY: I can’t catch a break. Every time I turn the corner, I hear another RUMOR about myself. Can you help corner, I hear another RUMOR about myself. Can you help me set these straight.me set these straight. *No one can help you with his one except yourself. Only YOU know if you actually did what people say you did at that party. Only YOU know if you’re really chasing the captain of the football team. If YOU know those rumors aren’t true, then WHO CARES?! Let ‘em fl y! You keep your head up and don’t let any-one knock you down. High school girls can be cruel, all of us, but that’s part of it. Now, if you’re actually worried about these rumors being true, then you’ve got yourself a different problem. People chose what to believe what they want and what they don’t. If people are your real friends, they’ll stick around until the end. Own it girl!

2014 Rambler

Wins SISPA Golden Dozen Award

Rambler Advisor Wins Advisor of the Year

Mrs. McCaskill was recently named SISPA Yearbook Ad-

visor of the Year. She accepted her award at SIU Carbondale in front of 400 students attending the SISPA convention. The award was given by the Chairman of the Journalism Department. Editor Randi Scheer nominated McCaskill with a letter of recommendation.

“I was totally surprised when I was notifi ed about winning Advisor of the Year--what an honor! In reality this award is not for me--it’s for the staff I’ve been privileged to work with. It’s only through their dedication and hard work that I was honored.”

The Golden Dozen Award is in conjunction

with the SISPA journalism contest. Books are submit-ted for critique and then 12 are selected for the Golden Dozen. Schools from Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and St. Louis and who range in size from 170 to over 2,000 in enrollment size submit their book for consideration. “It’s pretty amazing to think our little school went up against schools over 2,000 in enroll-

ment and 250 pages in length and

won a Golden Dozen award,” said Kris McCaskill, yearbook adviser. “I was so proud when I looked around the group of over 400 stu-dents attending the SISPA conven-tion at SIU-C and knew we stood among the top 12 schools. Our staff works very hard to cover the year in an interesting, thorough way and have fun at the same time. It’s not an easy job and they don’t get much appreciation so this award should mean so much to them. I know it does to me!”

Recently Mrs. McCaskill’s Photoshop class used the tools they’ve learned so far to create a new person. They’d been learn-ing selection tools, color correction tools, eraser tools and blending layers. Putting their skills to work, they took parts of

people’s faces and added them to their own face. See if you recognize the “before and after” faces. Can you tell what parts are on what people? If not, check out their answers below the face.

PetsPetsPets...many people have them, we all love them

and think of them as fam-ily and treat them like fam-ily. Some-times when they chew on something or aren’t house trained yet we may get mad or frus-trated at thembut we still love them. Part of having a pet is taking care of them (feeding, watering, bathing) because they can’t do it for them-selves. I think the most common pets are dogs and cats. There are a lot of not-so-normal pets like rab-bits, lizards, snakes, birds, and monkeys. You never know what people will want as a pet. At the pet store in Quincy there was a woman with a monkey and I know a few people that have snakes. Snakes look cool but I don’t think I would be able to hold one. At my mom’s we have two dogs (one is a dachshund and something else mix

we don’t know be-cause we got her from the humane society in Han-nibal) and also a collie. At my dad’s I have one dog, he

is a big golden lab. For a long time I’ve wanted to get a chihuahua, a Belgian malinois, a gerberian shep-sky and a pit bull. Maybe not all at the same time (not sure how well that would go).

This is a Gerberian Shepsky, it a siberian husky and German shepherd mix. It has light blue eyes and fur the color of both a husky and a german shepherd.

Dealing With Dealing With

DivorceDivorce Coming from a family that the parents are divorced I do know

a little something about how to deal with it. Not saying that I know exactly how to deal with divorce. But, that’s why I wanted to write this because I did have to deal with it. When my mom and dad told us (my siblings and I) I didn’t really react to it, I guess you could say but, one of my siblings did very badly. I’m not sure why it didn’t bother me as much, maybe because I thought ev-

erything would still be the same but, it wasn’t and it eventually hit me. I started wondering why this had to happen and if it was our fault. Research shows that the parents should always show you love. They need to let you know that you aren’t the reason they’regetting a divorce. You should express how you feel to someone, it could help. It would help you release

your frustration they have inside. I think you shouldn’t be mad at your parents that they couldn’t make it work. The top reasons they probably got a divorced was because too much arguing, infi delity, marrying too young, unrealistic expectations, lack of equality in the relationship, lack of preparation for marriage, and abuse.

You asked why I couldn’t forgive you,” Nick said, very quietly, and I jumped a little. “It was because you were the love of my life, Harper. And you didn’t want to be. That’s hard to let go.” ― Kristan Higgins

“If you spend your time hoping someone will suffer the consequences for what they did to your heart, then you’re allowing them to hurt you a second time in your mind.” ― Shannon L. Alder

“It wasn’t about being happy or unhappy. I just didn’t want to be me anymore.” ― Sarah Dessen,

Most people don’t like to go to the dentist having someone poking around in your mouth. Sometimes you are able to get out of school early depending on the time your dentist appointment is. You go to your appointment and they check your teeth to make sure nothing is wrong with them. The appointment doesn’t take to long most of the time.

The dentist also will do X-rays to fi nd cavities in your mouth. You have to bite down on a piece which sometime hurts. The times they fi nd a cavity they have you come back another time to get it fi lled or they can do it when they fi nd it.

Then when you go to get it fi lled they fi rst give you a shot in your mouth to numb your mouth, but some times that numb goes around

randomly one time the numb went up

to my eyes and all around. It felt weird but it went away after a while.

They wait for the numb to take full effect before they

start to drill in your teeth. Then they will drill a whole in your tooth. You can feel your mouth vibrating a little from that drill they use on your teeth.

When the dentist doesn’t fi nd a cavity they just clean your

teeth. They have you pick out a

fl avor like chocolate, bubble

gum, mint, and more.

When they put the fl avor on a mouth piece for you to press down with your teeth it doesn’t tast like the true fl avor. They leave it in your mouth while before they take it out.

When its timefor them to take the mouth piece

out. They will spray water in your mouth

and then they have you suck on a straw

to get all it out then they do it

over and over.

When they are all done they will give you a bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, and fl oss. They sometimes tell you that you can’t eat or drink for a while. Then you go home.

How to:Keep your grades up

and maintain your social life.

If there is one thing that most high-schoolers can agree on is that social life and academics are two of our top priorities. Whether your social life revolves around

playing sports, being on the quiz bowl team, or hanging out with your friends, things are bound to clash between what you like to do and your academics.

Learning balance is huge factor in keeping the academics and

social life from clashing. Knowing how to manage your time and priori-ties can give you time to do what you love, and maintain your highest possible grades at the same time. When asked about maintaining social life and school work, Alexa Brant said, “Academics are a top priority for me, it’s the fi rst thing I get done before anything else. How to keep the two balanced is all about priority. Know which one is more important to you, do that fi rst, then do the other one with the same effort as you would the fi rst.”

FFashionistas...ashionistas...You Go Girl!You Go Girl!

by Mrs. McCaskill

I remember having Haley VanDe-Venter

in MS Keyboard-

ing and thinking, “Wow,

that girl knows how to dress!” Even at a young age she was never afraid to mix patterns, colors and textures. It was so amaz-ing to see someone that young so self-confident in her own skin and not let the “norm” dictate her

sense of fashion. Now that I have her in class I look

forward each day to see what new combination she might put together.

It’s so refreshing to see an individual’s sense of style come through in a sea of neutrality. So often it’s what does so and so wear and what kind of jeans do so and so have. Who cares? Be brave! Take the fashion challenge:

BE YOURSELF!

Know what you like and

wear it with STYLE.

Who’s the girl with the wild glasses out there on the court? I remember sitting in the visitor’s section one night taking pictures at a Lady Hornet basketball game and overhearing that question. Who is it? None other than our own Dani Buss. Always comfortable with her style, you never know what to expect--dress up or sweats. Whatever it is, she wears it with style!
