Elements of Art- Line

Line - one point connected to another used to define shape, create contours, and outlines.

Shape - a flat, enclosed area of an artwork created through lines, textures, colours or an area enclosed by other shapes

Form - A three dimensional figure or the illusion of a three dimensional figure created using shadows

Value- How light or dark a given color or hue can be; The range of lightness and darkness in a drawing or picture.

- Shape - Form - Value

Michaela D. ● I used line to outline the shapes and do light cross hatching for shading on many objects

● I used form to create the illusion that the objects in the still life are 3D. Adding different levels of shading to different parts allowed for this.

● All of the objects are made up of shapes, for example, most of the fruits are round circles, and the jar is an cylinder.

● I use value to make transitions from dark to light in the shadows. While I didn't do this as well as I would have liked to, I still got my point across.

● One critique I received was to add better blending within the shadows, and make my penil lines less prevalent. This helped to make my drawing look less sketchy in the final product. While The shadows weren’t blended as much as I would have liked, I still think they look good.

● The other critique that I had received was to add higher contrast in the fruits. I did this by deepening the darks of the shadows so the fruits blended together less. This helped the product look less muddled together.

Faith D.- How I used line: I used line in this artwork

to show the outlines of certain objects. This would make it easier for a viewer to identify what these objects are.

- How I used Shape: I used shapes in this artwork for the areas that weren’t exactly 3d. Since shape is more of a 2d thing any of the places that appear 2d (like the areas where words are placed) is where I used shape.

- How I used Form: I used form in this artwork to help the objects seem more 3d like they would in real life.

- Value: I used value in this artwork to show areas that were light and dark according to how they looked in the reference I was using.

- The critiques that I received were helpful for me to know what I could change and improve on the next time I do a still life.

Mia C.● Line was used to outline and sketch out the figures in the

composition and to create details in the water bottle and the cup.

● Shape was the outline created to make the figures and the background in the artwork.

● Form was used to create the still life piece, making it seem 3D. ● Value was used to create tints and shades to help give off the

illusion of 3D form. The shadows and reflections were created using value, as well as some of the details.

● Positive feedback received was that the objects were nicely shaded and the way objects were shaded.

● The critique received was that I should use darker lines to help define the edges of the figures and to use the lines to make the details more noticeable. I should also shade the background areas “a bit more to help create a feeling of depth” and to help make the shadows appear darker and more distinct.

○ This critique helped by allowing me to notice that some of the details and shading can be improved more to help the artwork. The shading was altered in the background to make it seem more darker and ‘in the background’. The shine on the fridge was also fixed and altered to look better.

○ The details were also fixed with sharper edges and more details were also fixed with darker lines to help with the form and shape. The critique also pointed out some ways to improve the background and the surfaces of the figures in the art piece.

Jerianise C.● I used line to outline the objects, background,

and surface in this image. ● Also I used shape to represent the geometric

and metric organisms. In addition, to the part of a door, and wall in the background.

● However, I mainly represented form on the objects of this image.

● Lastly, I used value to represent the shadows of light and darkness for the whole image.

● The critique that was given to me was to “Try to make the lines more straighter”. So I took that advice and used a ruler to better straighten my lines.

A Glimpse of Light- Using line I was able to define the the objects

in my artwork creating contour lines .- I also used shapes make the objects and

defined it with shading giving off a 3 dimensional look.

- Form also helped give my artwork a 3 dimensional looks because of the shadows. The shadows helped with the illusion of of the figure being 3 dimensional.

- Lastly value played a big role in creating this artwork because it really help define the objects. The dark and light hues make it easy to identify certain figures in this artwork.

Overall I really like how my piece came out but I didn’t plan the outcome. But to improve I need to work on defining the objects to give it the 3 dimensional look. Also I think that everything went downhill when I created the the grid. So that is another thing I have to work on. To sum it up using line, shapes, form and value I was able to create my still life although it may need improvement I am off to a great start.
