A PUBLICATION FOR CANADIAN PROFESSIONALS

FA L L 2 015 • IS SUE 14This year marks my 30th year with this amazing company. Since my very first day there has always been an innovative spirit present within the STIHL Group that has brought about both outstanding innovations and groundbreaking new products.

In 1985, we were mainly a chain saw company with a line-up of a few brushcutters and cement saws. Today, there are one hundred and thirty-one sku's of outdoor power equipment available for both homeowners and professionals.

Our PROLINE publication continues to keep you abreast of our new product additions and innovations; all designed to make your work easier and safer. Quality at work: It is with this brand promise that STIHL maintains its leading position in the world’s markets.

Here’s a sample of some of STIHL’s pioneering technologies and products:

STIHL Arctic™ (VW) Selected chain saws have an electrically heated carburetor to prevent icing in cold conditions. Electrically heated handles make work more comfortable.

STIHL M-Tronic™ (M) This fully electronic engine management system adjusts ignition timing and fuel metering in all operating modes. It also takes external conditions such as temperature, altitude and fuel quality into account. It ensures consistent engine performance, a constant maximum speed and superb acceleration.

Easy2Start™ (E) The Easy2Start™ system uses dual spring technology. The operator can slowly pull the starting cord, which winds the second spring. When this spring overcomes the piston’s compression, it suddenly releases, starting the engine. This advanced starting system is designed to make starting STIHL products fast and easy for just about anyone.

STIHL TS 500i Cutquik®

The STIHL TS 500i Cutquik® is the world’s first electronically controlled fuel injected cut-off saw in the handheld outdoor power equipment industry. Simplified starting procedure means no choke – just purge it and pull it.

GS 461 Rock Boss® Concrete Cutter The GS 461 Rock Boss® is a concrete saw designed to square a corner or plunge out a hole. It will cut a wide range of materials including ductile pipe or reinforced concrete. The beauty of this concrete cutter is the cutting precision, such as contour, corner and hole cutting.

Lithium-Ion Products No Gasoline. No Emissions. No Power Cord. These are some of the benefits offered by this state-of-the-art STIHL cordless family of tools. Powered by a universal 36 V STIHL lithium-ion battery, STIHL has a complete line-up of products.

STIHL TSA 230 Battery Cut-Off Saw The STIHL TSA 230 Battery Cut-Off Saw is the world’s first battery-powered cut-off machine. The 9” (230 mm) cutting wheel and emission-free cordless technology ensure clean work both indoors and outdoors.

UNIQUE USES OF

HANDHELD AND BACKPACK BLOWERS

Over the years, we've heard that some of our customers use STIHL blowers to ”keep their combine engines clean” or to ”remove cobwebs in their chicken barns”. So, we decided to go to Facebook and asked our followers what unique ways they use their STIHL blower. Here are a few of the responses that we received. Thank you for the submissions!

Dean Tarasoff “I use mine to clear snow from my driveway.”

Markisa Firestar Cada “Clean my car!”

Rob Dockrey “Defrosting the walk-in freezers.”

Brian Paul “After mowing…clean-up of sidewalks and driveways, fall clean-ups.”

Richard J. Corkum “Cool off on sticky hot days.”

Kirk Jacobsen “Just bought a new BG 55 a couple of weeks ago. Great for clearing the trimmings from hedges where a backpack won't fit.”

Page 6: STIHL® PROLINE - FALL 2015- ISSUE 14

For years we, as occupants of this earth, have used and consumed its resources without giving much thought to what we were doing. Now we have come to the realization that there are consequences to our actions. In a simpler time we grew what we needed to eat, and harvested a little bit more than we needed in order to share our wealth or barter for services with our neighbours. There were enough natural resources for everyone to find ways to survive and for communities to thrive. The skills that were used were passed down from generation to generation.

Oh how things have changed! We have progressed in many ways, with new materials, technology, methods, equipment and a seemingly endless supply of ideas and innovations having brought us to where we are now. But with all these changes we need to ask ourselves; “Are we prosperous, respectful of our environment and those we share it with? Are we healthy, happy and using what we have in a thoughtful and diligent manner?”I mention this as a reminder of the

tremendously important role each and every one of you plays in maintaining and preserving our planet. As professionals you are conscious of your actions, being careful not to spill fuel and oil onto the ground when refuelling, not operating a poorly maintained piece of equipment that would damage plant materials and pollute the air. You care about our water supply, taking precautions to use it sparingly during irrigation and respecting it when working on, in or near it with your equipment. You help control the spread of serious diseases such as the Emerald Ash Borer and Asian Long-horned Beetle, an effort that has kept many of you very busy in recent years. Yes, you might have to cut down dead, damaged or dying trees and plants, but you are also responsible for shaping, planting and maintaining living plants and trees. You nurture and care for our environment on a daily basis.

Along with protecting nature, we also need to protect ourselves and our staff when working. In the past, training was very basic, if any was provided at all. Little or no personal protective equipment was issued, and there was little consideration given to ergonomics. As a result, some of our more senior professionals are living with hearing loss and impairment, vision challenges, and breathing issues, and there is a history of minor to serious bodily injuries.

Today we find ergonomics, health and safety, and training front and centre in the workplace. Training is often not only recommended and

encouraged but legislated. Many eager young men and women are now seeing the value of pursuing a career in outdoor activities - in construction, landscaping, parks and horticulture. What is most heartening is the fact that it is the desire of not only those who are hiring these individuals but the individuals themselves to have documented operator training and safety awareness as a number one priority.

Although our environment has changed significantly, we are responding in a diligent and professional manner by purchasing quality well-designed equipment, as well as learning how to maintain and operate this equipment in a safe and effective manner. As you grow your businesses and expand your portfolios, research the equipment you will be purchasing carefully and make sure it meets all the safety and ergonomic demands of today’s fast-paced industry.

I would like to both congratulate and thank STIHL Canada for supporting the many training programs offered through the Ontario Parks Association. They are certainly an equipment sector leader in helping us deliver our mandate of Protecting Tomorrow Today.

• An effective solvent for removing resin and gum build-up on and in between hedge trimmer blades• Smooth running blades translates to increased comfort (less vibration) for the operator and cleaner cuts, which is better for plant health• Less resin/debris build-up, reduces engine wear and increases fuel efficiency• Contains a lubricant which keeps your blades running smooth and acts as a light corrosion inhibitor

TIP: When winterizing your STIHL hedge trimmer, you’ll want to follow these simple steps; thoroughly clean the blades and spray them down with STIHL hedge trimmer blade cleaner. The blade cleaner will help to protect against rust, as well as, clean the blades for storage. As for the engine, empty the fuel tank and add some STIHL MotoMix®, which is ethanol-free and will prevent damage to carburetor, etc. When spring arrives, you will be able to start it up and get to work. Before you store your machine, run it for a minute after you add the MotoMix® to ensure it is in the carburetor and your equipment is fully protected.

Have you had branches from trees or shrubs interfere with your mowing?

Do you need to deal with branches shading your garden or crossing over the fence?

This article explains the basics of pruning and how and when to prune safely for you and the tree.

The number one rule of pruning is to use the right tool for the job. An old arborist I learned from many years ago used to say, “Prune when the saw is sharp”. This simple statement speaks truth.

Here are a few myths about pruning trees. Some trees drip sap after pruning. Scientific research has proven that sap dripping after pruning has no effect on tree health. (Refer to figure #1) Another common myth associated with pruning is painting the cuts. Many years ago Dr. Alex Shigo revealed that this practice did nothing to assist the cuts in closing and did not prevent disease infections. One final word on myths. There is no scientific study that proves tree disease can be spread by pruning tools. Therefore, treating pruning equipment between cuts or trees is not recommended by modern arborists.

Modern tree care pruning guidelines focus on dosage and techniques rather than timing and painting. Trees can be harmed by pruning, but normally the harm results when branches are pruned incorrectly using dull and improper tools. Tree stress results when too many branches or too much of the canopy are removed from a tree.

First, select the right tool for the job and be sure that the blades are sharp. Sharp blades make clean and smooth finished cuts. This helps prevent infections from disease after pruning. When pruning diseased limbs, it is recommended to prune in the winter when common tree disease spores are not actively airborne.

Your local STIHL Dealer has a selection of quality sharp bladed pruning tools available, hand pruning tools such as shears, pruners and saws. You will also find an excellent section of smaller specially designed chain saws designed for pruning. A good example is the new battery-powered chain saws. These are an excellent choice for pruning applications.

A rule of thumb, arborist industry guideline or standard, is that no more than 25% of living branches of a tree should be removed by pruning; pruning more than this will cause stress. A tree or shrub that produces a proliferation of young shoots or small branches after pruning indicates stress and that too much was pruned.

The act of pruning can be defined as the removal of branches or sections or parts of branches. This is often referred to as removing limbs to the point of origin or trunk, and also shortening limbs or branches by reducing their length, height or width.

When removing a branch back to the trunk it is important to only prune the branch and not cut the trunk. Trees and shrubs have a natural target that makes it easier to cut only the branch and miss the trunk. Where branches and trunks meet, they interconnect with specialized tissues. This special connection creates a raised or swollen collar and ridges, wrinkles or folds. These formations are known as branch collars and branch bark ridges. The final cut should be made up to but not into these ridges or collars. It is best to stay away from the collar rather than risking cutting into it. These areas make up a tree’s natural protection barrier against infection, and when left intact, it allows the trees to deal with the cuts easily. (Refer to figure #2)

An important step in pruning a branch back to the trunk is to remove the bulk of the weight of the limb before making the final cut. This creates what is known as the three cut method to removing branches. This rule is particularly important as the length and size of the branch increases, such as when you are pruning branches with a chain saw.

The three step technique for removing limbs is shown in the diagram. (Refer to figure #3)

Shortening or reducing a branch has some guidelines also. Branches should be shortened back to another branch so that there is never a stub or blank end left on a branch. The branch can be shortened back to a branch that is large enough, but the branch that is left must be at least 1/3 the size of the branch where it is cut. If there are two branches where you want to shorten the branch to, then select one and remove the other with the shortening cut. Do not leave a 'Y' branch at the end of a shortened branch. This is not a natural formation. The cut should be made on an angle that compliments the angle of the branch being left. (Refer to figure #4)

Pruning cuts that shorten limbs are almost always done with hand tools. If a chain saw is required for a shortening cut, then most likely too much is being removed and stress will result.

Pruning can be dangerous, especially when it involves large limbs and tall trees. When ladders are needed and chain saw size cuts are required, it may be advisable to request an arborist consultation. Use wisdom and safety equipment at all times.

Remember...prune when the saw is sharp, make your cuts correctly and don't cut too much.

What do an arborist sixty feet up a tree, a landscaper blowing leaves for fall clean-up and a cyclist enjoying their favourite trail on the weekend have in common? They’re all wearing the NEW ADVANCE X-Shell Jacket from STIHL. This jacket is extremely comfortable due to its 4-way stretch material, fleece lining and water-repellent properties. It is wind proof and breathable and does a great job of transferring moisture away from your body, keeping you warm and dry during any work / recreational activity. When you’re using a chain saw, safety apparel should be number one on your priority list. Eye, ear and head protection, along with cut protective pants are a must…but what about your feet? If you’re limbing or bucking up a log, your saw can be down near your feet often, so having a cut protective boot is probably a good idea! on the jobWhen you go to work everyday, you have to make sure you have all of your tools and a plan for what to do with them. One very important part of your plan should be doing your job safely, and that brings us to PPE, or personal protective equipment. STIHL has you covered from head to toe when it comes to PPE, so let’s talk protection.

Head, hearing and eye protection are paramount. STIHL has a few different options when it comes to this; from our ‘A’ and ‘B’ helmet kits which come complete with hearing protection and mesh visors, to our Deluxe ‘A’ system, which is a Type 2, Class E pro ensemble, with Class ‘A’ hearing protection and mesh visor. We also offer another pro ensemble, which is Type 1, Class E giving you the ability to satisfy whichever safety regulations may govern your particular work site. The Deluxe helmet systems are also available with clear, polycarbonate visors.

STIHL also has a selection of CSA approved safety glasses which will keep your eyes protected. Mesh, or even plastic visors do not protect your eyes adequately on their own, so see your local STIHL Dealer for details regarding styles and available lens tints.

If you’re working with your hands all day, a quality work glove is also important. STIHL’s ProScaper glove is a great landscape glove, with premium boar skin, padded palms and Velcro® wrist closure. A great all around work glove; the STIHL leather work glove is comfortable and durable, suitable for just about any kind of work.

If you’re running a chain saw, hedge trimmer, line trimmer, etc., our anti-vibration gloves will absorb a lot of the vibrations with the gel pads on the trigger fingers and palms. These gloves are extremely comfortable and also feature a Velcro® wrist closure for a custom fit. Chain saw operators will also be glad to know we carry a Forestry Cut-Retardant Safety

Glove, which features a combination of leather and synthetic textile with cut-retardant material incorporated into the back of both hands.

STIHL’s NEW line of Xtreme Workwear is designed with the latest high-performance, technical fibres. Four-way stretch fabrics which are lightweight, breathable and wind and water-repellent are extremely comfortable and look great.

ADVANCE Plus Safety Pants will keep arborists and forest workers comfortable and protected with 3,600 ft./min. cut protection in the front and back below the knee. These pads (4 layers of Kevlar®), satisfy both the cUL/BNQ and WCB-BC safety standards.

ADVANCE X-Shell is a jacket which will keep you warm and dry, by transferring moisture away from your body very efficiently. This jacket is perfect for any jobsite, with robust abrasion-resistant nylon on the forearms and rubber shoulder protection for carrying tools. It is also great for hiking your favourite trails on the weekend, cruising the woods on your ATV or just walking the dog! Available in ‘peat’ and ‘high-viz orange’.

Last, but not least, we have a great line of protective footwear. If you’re running a chain saw in the forest, we have our leather chain saw boots and three different rubber boots, all featuring cut protection (two spiked versions for the loggers). If you’re landscaping, the ever popular, CSA Green Patch certified LawnGrips® Pro Shoes and Pro 8 Boots, feature a water-resistant no-slip sole, perfect for wet turf and slopes. They are available in sizes 5 through 13, including half sizes (except for sizes 12 and 13).

As you can see, we take personal protective equipment seriously. So gear up with STIHL safety apparel and get the job done…safely!

Compact, agile and with the STIHL M-Tronic™ fully electronic engine management system, the STIHL MS 241 C-M chain saw automatically adjusts the engine to compensate for changes in operating conditions such as temperature, altitude and fuel quality. The engine provides high torque over a wide RPM range, up to 70% fewer exhaust emissions and as much as 20% lower fuel consumption.

The anti-vibration system features special springs between the engine block and the handles. They act as buffer zones and provide fewer vibrations. The die-cast magnesium engine housing and stainless steel muffler ensure a long service life and provide a lighter weight.

The saw chain can be adjusted effortlessly using the side-mounted chain tensioner, so you can avoid contact with the sharp saw chain. Both the fuel and oil tanks have large openings, making them easy to cleanly refill. The fuel level is visible, as the tank is transparent. The patented STIHL special caps on the tanks can be easily opened and closed without the need for tools. Whether you’re professionally cutting firewood, felling small trees or doing more heavy forestry work, this unbeatable reliable chain saw is the one you want at your side.

MS 661 C-M MAGNUM®

For a smooth, steady cut that’s ahead of the restThis professional chain saw has one of the best power-to-weight ratios in the industry and boasts 20% less fuel consumption than its predecessor, the MS 660. The MS 661 C-M MAGNUM® includes STIHL M-Tronic™ technology which monitors engine performance and adjusts accordingly. A reduction in vibration levels provides good handling even with a long guide bar.

It’s the lightest professional grade chain saw in its displacement class. The special components built-in to the chain saw significantly reduce the weight, such as the stainless steel muffler and the ROLLOMATIC® ES guide bars. The double bumper spikes ensure perfect cutting precision during bucking or felling tasks. The STIHL Ematic™ oil pump system provides proper lubrication and reduces bar oil consumption up to 50%.

By encompassing the HD2 air filter (made of PET polyethylene material) into the MS 661 C-M MAGNUM®, there’s a reduction of fine dust that enters the chain saw. Thereby, increasing the engine’s service life and reducing wear. For greater manoeuvrability when felling large trees, turn to the impressive performance of the MS 661 C-M MAGNUM®.

“As a chain saw artist, I was very excited when STIHL came out with the MSA 160 cordless saw. Now after using it for a couple years, I get to say ‘thank you STIHL’.

Three top reasons why I love my chain saw:

1) No vibration…gives me more control for detailing.2) No exhaust…allows me to carve indoors during the cold winter months.3) Not having to pull start every time…just pull the trigger and you’re going.

Just when you think it can’t get better, STIHL launches another great tool that has opened up a whole new level in the chain saw world.”

OF TEAM CANADA, PLEASE CONTACT:

The highly esteemed Husky Cup WORLD CHAIN SAW CARVING CHAMPIONSHIP, hosted by Andreas and Steffi Martin, just held their 10th annual event from May 20th to May 26th, 2015 in Mulda, Germany. This was a team event and Team Canada consisted of Mike Winia from London, ON and Joerg Jung from Terrace, BC.Mike Winia resides in London, ON with his family. He has run his own successful Logging and Tree Service Company for over 10 years and began chain saw carving in 2009. Mike has been an artist his entire life and his familiarity with a chain saw, allowed for an easy transition to Chain Saw Sculpting. As a professional Chain Saw Sculptor, Mike strives to create realism in each carving. Over the past 6 years, Mike has been commissioned to carve multiple large scale carvings throughout Canada. Over the last 12 months, he has also competed at the Australian Championships, English Open Championships, Chetwynd Invitational Championships and will be competing this August at the Saskatchewan Championships. With each carving, Mike incorporates specific ideas given to him by the client, while allowing his art to bring it all together in a strong, artistic final piece.Joerg Jung resides in Terrace, BC. Joerg came from Germany to Canada on a one year work permit and loved Canada so much that he decided to apply for permanent residence status. Joerg started carving full-time soon after he arrived in Canada in 2010. He continues to try to explore different ways to give each carving a personal touch. Joerg loves to push himself to the limits and carves every piece with passion. Joerg’s focus is on chain saw carvings, but he also does antler carving, relief carving, fine woodwork and lately has developed an interest in airbrushing. Joerg will be competing for the third time at the Chetwynd Invitational Championships this June. Each year at the Husky Cup World Championships a theme is selected. The theme for this year’s event was hunting: before the age of guns. It had to be more than one large piece of wood and it had to tell a hunting story. For the Team Canada sculpture, Mike and Joerg decided on an Inuit scene. They created a standing polar bear that stood 9 feet tall, being attacked by a spear wielding Inuit and his

two trusty huskies. They were allowed to carve on these pieces for 5.5 days, for a total of 56 hours. Each carving team worked tirelessly throughout the event.Throughout the course of the 2.5 public viewing days, over 9,000 spectators attended to witness these amazing sculptures. The crowd was shoulder to shoulder for the entire event. This event hosts the most spectators throughout its event in the world. Spectators are able to walk the 200 acres of property that is surrounded with hundreds of chain saw sculptures strategically placed throughout. All main pieces from each competition remains on the property and is displayed proudly in beautifully landscaped gardens. Each building oozes rustic woodcharm, with acute attention to detail at every turn. There is even an approximate 130 foot table, cut from a single tree. It has set the world record for the most pints of beer on a table. A whopping 10,000 were placed on the table. One of the biggest contributors to the ambience of the event was the hospitality of the organizers, Andreas and Steffi Martin. Not only do they ensure an amazing experience for the carvers, but the supporters and spectators as well.Unfortunately, we did not place this year at the Husky Cup World Championships. The placing teams were: Russia (1st), U.S.A. (2nd) and Germany (3rd). However, we are both very proud of the sculpture we created and the opportunity to carve with so many talented and wonderful people. It has truly been one of the best experiences for us thus far, and we hope to have the opportunity to return.Thank you to everyone who followed and supported Team Canada and their journey at the Husky Cup World Championships. And a very special thank you to STIHL Canada for putting together our sweet Team Canada attire.

Students achieve top performances at Ontario Technological Skills Competition

Over 2,000 students put their skills to the test at the Ontario Technological Skills Competition, Canada’s largest skilled trades competition.

The Ontario Technological Skills Competition (OTSC) was held at RIM Park in Waterloo on May 4th (Elementary Technology Activity Day) and May 5th, featuring 67 skilled trades and technologies contests and 2,000 competitors from high schools and colleges across Ontario. It remains the largest skilled trades competition in Canada.

Over 30,000 spectators passed through RIM Park over two days to witness the skills of Ontario’s young people in action. From contests in plumbing, culinary, aesthetics and automotive service - to name only a few - competitors were judged on their skills related to their field, as well as, their job interview skills and related soft skills.

In the Horticulture and Landscape contest, for which STIHL provided Cutquik® saws, five post-secondary teams, and ten secondary teams faced-off for the gold medal in their contest. The winner of the

post-secondary contest advanced to the Skills Canada National Competition in Saskatoon on May 27th-30th. This honour went to Shaquan Lamar Brown and Derick Mederios of Humber Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, who won gold at the OTSC and placed fourth in the national competition.

STIHL also provided the trimmers used in the Small Powered Equipment contest, in which 21 secondary students competed. Maxime Bouffard, a high school student from Hearst, ON won gold at the OTSC, and went on to place third at the national competition.

“Those who compete at the OTSC are the future of skilled trades and technologies in Ontario. We believe there’s no better way for a young person to jump start their career than by providing them the opportunity to tell future employers they are a gold medalist in their field,” says Gail Smyth, Executive Director for Skills Ontario.

Skills Ontario would like to thank STIHL for their generous support of the OTSC and student success in the skilled trades!

See the full results from the 2015 OTSC at skillsontario.com/skills-competitions.

This all started as a teen working on a farm after school and in the evenings using a STIHL chain saw. My experiences with STIHL chain saws have been over a lifetime in any type of job possible. This includes making building materials. The STIHL MS 441 is the chain saw that made it all happen for many projects. The MS 441 is the middle chain saw for me. It’s very good in felling, bucking, blocking and milling. I like the STIHL chain saws to the diesel engine. They provide lots of power, less fuel consumption and durable. For example, the MS 441 has now milled enough board feet to build 7 buildings, 3 of which are the size of today’s standard homes. I still have the original 28 inch bar. Thanks to STIHL chain saws, over the years, we have worked on many projects around our home and our property. Some of these are a gazebo, garden shed, 80 foot sawing building to house all of my chain saws and milling equipment, home and outdoor furniture, two hemlock decks, fishing shack and beveled siding. Furthermore, STIHL chain saws played a huge part in saving our property when hurricane Juan made a mess in the fall of 2003 and hurricane White Juan in the winter of 2004. I one hundred percent highly recommend a STIHL chain saw to anyone who is looking to buy.

Walter RodlerInventory/Engineer - Debert, NS

The city of Niagara Falls, ON set the stage for the 2015 edition of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS® Canadian Championship at the Scotiabank Convention Centre on July 18-19, 2015. The weekend started on Saturday with 9 athletes from Eastern Canada competing for 4 spots in the Canadian Championship to compete against the top 4 athletes from the west who qualified in June at the Craft Beer Week in Vancouver, BC. Rookie 2015 World Champion Nathan Cumberland from Keswick Ridge, NB moved up to the professional ranks and surprised all of the attendants by winning the whole event in his very first appearance. Nathan qualified to compete in the Canadian Championship along with fellow easterners Marcel Dupuis (Memramcook, NB), Cecil Starr (Sebright, ON) and JP Mercier (St-Étienne-de-Lauzon, QC). This select group of athletes faced the gang from the west on Sunday, led by defending Canadian Champion Stirling Hart (Vancouver, BC), 4-time Canadian Champion Mitch Hewitt (Scotch Creek, BC), Karl “The Godfather” Bischoff (Magna Bay, BC) and Nick Russell (Port McNeil, BC) – with a complete roster in the professional division, the stage was set and game was on.

The Canadian Championship was the most exciting Canadian event ever! With the addition of young gun Nathan Cumberland to the roster and his impressive power at only 19 years of age, the already experienced professional athletes had to kick their “A” game up a notch. Never in the history of Canadian STIHL TIMBERSPORTS had our official judges had to go so many times to the video screens to determine a winner. But in this edition, Assistant Judge Jonathan Russell and Head Judge Roger McPhee had their hands full for the whole day. Not only was competition as close as ever, but for the first time ever, the first place in Springboard Chop was taken away from Springboard World Champion Mitch Hewitt by defending Champion Stirling Hart. As expressed by Stirling Hart after his amazing Springboard Chop heat, he said: “I’ve been waiting for over 8 years to beat Mitch at this discipline”. After 5 of 6 events, Mitch Hewitt was leading the scoreboard with 30 points, closely followed by Stirling Hart and Nathan Cumberland, both with 28 points and Marcel Dupuis with 27; it was all going to be decided in the Hot Saw round. Mitch Hewitt needed a good time to secure his victory, but he had trouble starting his Hot Saw. He recorded a time of 16.8 seconds, far too long for this event. This opened the door for the chase to take his spot, but with Stirling Hart and Nathan Cumberland getting disqualified (DQ) in this round, the chance was now for Marcel Dupuis. With an inspired performance, Marcel ran a solid time of 6.5 seconds winning this event and scoring 8 more points that would put him at a total of 35 points, one point above Mitch Hewitt who only scored 4 points in this round and finished in second place with a total score of 34 points. The Canadian Championship, 2015 edition, was a nail-biting event not recommended for people with heart conditions from the beginning to end!

The Canadian Championship was also graced by the presence of the STIHL TIMBERSPORTS best Women and Rookie athletes in the

country. The Women’s Division was represented by defending Canadian Champion Danielle Tkach (Sexsmith, AB) and Katelan Steward (Grande Prairie, AB) from the west and Janet Walker (Truro, NS) and France Gagné (Shipshaw, QC), representing the east. In the Rookie Division we had Lukas Brown-John (Squamish, BC) and Brad Barlow (Edmonton, AB) representing the west and Ben Cumberland (Keswick Ridge, NB) and George Williams (River Denys, NS) from the east. The level of competition displayed by both Women and Rookie Divisions was phenomenal! They kept crowds on the edge of their seats until the final event, where Janet Walker took the Canadian Women’s Championship for the first time, followed by a new face in the Canadian Championship, Katelan Steward and finishing the podium with Danielle Tkach whose hopes of defending her title faded away as competition advanced. On the Rookie Division, Ben Cumberland and George Williams from the East completely dominated the competition and took first and second place with Brad Barlow finishing third.

The Canadian 2015 season is now complete and we focus our efforts to the 2015 World Championship that will take place in Poznan, Poland on November 13-14. Team Canada Coach Gerry Rozo has selected a team, which is in his own words, “the best team we’ve ever had for a World Championship”.

Team Canada will be represented by:1. Marcel Dupuis | 2. Mitch Hewitt | 3. Stirling Hart 4. Nathan Cumberland | 5. JP Mercier | 6. Ben Cumberland

Congratulations to all the athletes who put a solid performance in 2015, and good luck to Team Canada who will start training immediately to go for the gold medal that they missed by a half-swing of an axe to Australia in the finals in Austria last year.

Thanks for supporting the ULTIMATE extreme sport on the planet!

THE MOST EXCITING CANADIAN CHAMPIONSHIP EVER!

Woodcarvers from all across Canada, 12 in total, gathered at Woodeden Camp in London, ON, April 30th to May 3rd, to create a range of different carvings to help beautify the camp.

“They’re donating their time and talents, trying to raise awareness for Woodeden Camp and Easter Seals”, said Howard Botten, site manager for Woodeden Camp. “They’re trying to bring some attention to themselves as artists and carvers, trying to bring some attention to the camp and also trying to bring some attention to Easter Seals and what we do to help children with physical disabilities. They’re here on their own time and their own dollar and they’re just happy to help.”

Among the carvers were Ryan Cook and Paul and Jacob Frenette from HGTV’s show Carver Kings. Joerg Jung of Vancouver and local carver, Mike Winia, will be representing Canada at the world carving championships in Germany this year and were also part of the event.

Botten said this is the first year they’ve held the event.

“Maybe (next year) we can get something going bigger and better even”, he said.

The purpose of the woodcarving event is to help raise money for Easter Seals. Easter Seals is an organization that helps children with physical disabilities and their families to get wheelchairs, lifts for the home, ramps and the opportunity to go to camp.

Botten said they have about 350 children that go to Woodeden Camp every year and they can enjoy activities such as archery, a high-ropes course, swimming, rock climbing and arts and crafts.

If you’ve been following STIHL outdoor power equipment lately, surely you’ve heard the term M-Tronic™. What is this so called M-Tronic™ and where is it found? Allow me to answer these questions for you and possibly de-mystify the technology that has been growing rapidly over the last few years.

For almost 90 years STIHL has been producing premium outdoor handheld power equipment which typically featured a manually controlled carburetor. This type of carburation has remained much the same for many years. Recently, we’ve changed some of these older designs and incorporated a new technology that employs an “electronic” carburation system. This new technology has kept us at the forefront of our industry and is one of the reasons why STIHL continues to be the number one selling brand of handheld power equipment in the world.

This “electronic” technology will be paramount to all new engine designs in the coming years and will be featured on many new models moving forward. But what is it and what can it do? STIHL is calling its version of this technology “M-Tronic™”, in essence it is electronic engine management that automatically controls fuel delivery to the engine. This new technology still utilizes a carburetor but the management of the fuel is done so electronically as opposed to manually. The advantage to this system is that the powerhead is optimally tuned all of the time, and no longer requires periodic carburetor adjustments. Picture a tiny digital technician that is adjusting your carburetor every 8 seconds all the while factoring in elements like altitude, temperature and fuel type - to name a few. This not only yields a better performing machine, it is also consuming less fuel and runs cleaner from an environmental perspective. Everybody wins!

The M-Tronic™ system looks quite simple with only a few added wires and a solenoid valve on the carburetor, but in fact it is quite complex. Capable of making calculations in a nano-second (1 billionth of a second), the control unit sends signals to the carburetor’s solenoid valve which is what allows the fuel to flow through the carburetor and into the machine. If your air filter starts to clog up, the M-Tronic™ system can sense it and make the necessary adjustments to allow the machine to run properly. How cool is that!

The thing with new technology is that it is not always understood and can sometimes be intimidating. The key to maximizing the performance of your machine is to learn about the new technology, understand it, and run the unit within its operational guidelines. Considering the benefits of this technology, we will likely see M-Tronic™ work its way on to more of our product range in the future and everyone using STIHL products will benefit.

Riddle: What's the difference between a hunter and a fisherman?

Answer: A hunter lies in wait. A fisherman waits and lies.

STIHLCanada

I’m not a big believer in predictable milestones.

“So you’re 40 today! How do you feel?”

“It’s like being 39, only people keep reminding me I’m a year older. Thus a year closer to being worm food.”

Did I happen to mention birthdays bring out the darkness in me?

“Oh. Happy Birthday anyway?”

“Double Jack on the rocks. Water back.”

“What?”

“You’re gonna make me feel old, you buy me a drink or I get to punch you in the beezer. It’s the rule.”

“I never heard that rule!”

“I just made it up. And don’t order bar bourbon instead of Jack. I can tell.”

But … there are genuine milestones. The real deal.

Sometimes you can’t help but be swept up.

My youngest is a boy staunch and tall and brave.

He teeters upon the edge of manhood, and just walked across a stage to accept a high school diploma.

That’s not the milestone.

This is, after all, the boy the school system tested at age seven to find out why he was restless. And why, when some of the kids struggled with Dr. Seuss, he had the vocabulary of a university student. A really short, surly university student.

I said to him at the time, “They’re gonna pull you from class tomorrow to take a test. Do your best.”

“What’s going on?”

“Don’t worry about it.”

“Why am I getting a test nobody else is getting?”

Remember. He was seven.

“They want to find how smart you are,” I said.

“I have conditions.”

“Really.”

“Yes.”

“You realize you’re still small enough I can pick you up with one hand?”

“Doesn’t matter,” he said. “I have conditions.”

“What are they?”

“If I’m as smart as they think I am, I don’t have to leave my friends and go to some nerd school.”

“On what planet am I getting up an hour earlier to drive you through rush hour traffic to a school on the other side of the city?”

“Okay,” he said. “I’ll take the test.”

“Hey!” I said. “Smart guy. What if I’d said no? That you were going to nerd school?”

He grinned at me. A hard, merry, mean grin I had never seen before.

It was the kind of grin that said he was four moves ahead of me. And had been for some length of time. And he’d only now decided to drop the charade that I was smarter than him.

“I’d have blown the test,” he said.

So no. Picking up the diploma was not the milestone.

The milestone was when he stood up at the grad banquet, taking on the role of master-of-ceremonies. A position his school created just for him.

It’s a big school. Big graduating class. When you put the grads and their dates and their parents together, you’re talking 2,000 people in a mega ballroom.

If I had to stand up in front of 2,000 people and talk, they’d have to look under the lectern, because that’s where I’d be curled up in the fetal position. Possibly weeping. With my thumb in my mouth.

And my boy sauntered up to the microphone in his first real suit. Converse All Stars with pink laces on his feet. Just cause.

Casually. Like it was nothing.

And he leaned into the mic, welcomed people to the banquet and began to riff on the high school experience.

“My first year of high school,” he said, “I thought my teachers hated me.”

Pause.

“What makes it worse was that was the year I was homeschooled.”

The crowd roared and he had them.

Palm of his hand.

That’s a milestone … not for him, but me.

It was the moment when you look at your kid and realize he turned out better than you … and he’s going to be just fine.
