Exclusive Interview with Billy Doherty of The Undertones

The Undertones emerged from Derry in Northern Ireland in the whole punk, ‘new wave’ boom of 1977-1978. They had actually formed in 1975. The time-honoured five mates who played cover versions in youth clubs. The line up featured the O’Neill brothers – John and Damian on guitars, Michael Bradley on bass, Billy Doherty on drums, and on vocals Feargal Sharkey.

Like countless others, punk rock fired their imagination, and gave shape and direction to their material. A love of Garage bands as heard on the seminal Lenny Kaye compilation ‘Nuggets’ helped formulate their predilection for songs with strong chorus hooks, keeping songs short, economical and dynamic. It wasn’t until 1978 that their pop fizz bombs were finally preserved on vinyl, with the classic debut single ‘Teenage Kicks’, released originally on the Good Vibrations label. The song so enamoured influential Radio One DJ John Peel that he announced it to be his ‘favourite record of all time’, and played the single incessantly. "Teenage Kicks" has subsequently come to be considered one of the best rock songs of all time. The Sticks had a chat with the Drummer, Billy Doherty ahead of their show in Harpenden this summer. It seems unbelievable that it is over 40 years since The Undertones started? Yes it is quite a long time; it is a lifetime for some people. We are very fortunate that we are still continuing and people like seeing the band. The 70’s and 80’s music is still very popular, we did a thing for the BBC and had an invited audience and they were a real mixture, teenagers, really young kids and then some of the guys were even older than us!! So I don’t really know what the attraction is for the band, maybe it’s the sound, maybe songs, maybe it’s a combination of everything. How did The Undertones get started? It was around about 1975 and we were all mates, Michael Bradley and I went to school along with Feargal Sharkey (who was the original singer) and we used to hang out at the O’Neill’s house with John and Damian and we used to play football and generally hang out together. We got interested in music from about 13-14 years of age and because we could not afford any equipment we managed to get part-time jobs. Then we got ourselves some equipment and formed a band and we have just continued ever since. We got very lucky that Terri Hooley got us to record ‘Teenage Kicks’ for his Good Vibrations record label in Belfast and John Peel picked up on it and played it on his radio show, then it became record of the week with Peter Powell on BBC Radio 1. We

Page 5: Sticks July & August 2016

then signed to Sire records who at the time had The Ramones and Talking Heads in their stable and the rest as they say is history. When we sent the record to John, surprisingly back then it was easy to get through to the BBC and particularly easy to get though to John Peel, after we sent the record we used to phone up and check he had got it, and he said he was going to play it on Tuesday but did not say what time, so the whole band and all our mates assembled in the O’Neills front room and during the show he played ‘Teenage Kicks’ and it was such a thrill, it is really exciting hearing your record on the radio but especially when it’s John Peel. No sooner had the record finished than I think his words were “That was so good I am going to play it again” and we were really speechless. Back then there was only Top of the Pops or BBC radio that played music and maybe The Old Grey Whistle Test so the fact that he played the record twice back to back, we just could not believe it, it was so exciting!!! You have to understand we were kicking a football around the streets of Derry and all of a sudden we were on BBC Radio 1, even up till today I don’t think I have heard a record played back to back. Derry is not known as a hot bed of musical talent? No not really, the scene back then was show-bands, country and western bands and cover bands, but we were essentially starved of music because of the troubles in Northern Ireland; very few bands came to play generally, so when the punk thing came along it was really ideal for us. We had the difficulty that even though we were rehearsing, playing and writing songs, we had no outlet for our music. So we just kept at it and we managed to get a residency at a local bar called the Kasbah, in Derry and we played there twice a week and got a following then got a fan base. It just kept continuing till we got the record deal. There was no rock and roll scene, the only acts that came out of Derry were Josef Locke and Dana. A few years ago when Derry was the city of culture, I met Dana for the first time and she was very nice and we got on really well. I heard that ‘Teenage Kicks’ was written very quickly is that true? Yes it was, John wrote the song very quickly and of course I wrote the drumming part. John was influenced by a lot of early Rock “n” Roll and you can tell that in the song. When you were growing up, who did you listen to? Any TV that had music on it, regardless to what type it was anything on Top of the Pops, Old Grey Whistle Test. Anything that showed a drummer was compulsive viewing, and the only thing I honed in on was the drummer regardless of the type of music. Drummers are like a band of brothers, there are so many good ones out there, but to me Charlie Watts

Page 6: Sticks July & August 2016

6

was a huge influence on my drumming also a guy called Al Jackson Jnr. who was with Booker T and The MG’s who sadly is dead now. Drumming is hard work especially with The Undertones as we do 25 songs in about 90 minutes, they are very fast and you barely get chance to come up for air. So for me it is quite physical. I try and keep my self fit as when your drumming you have all four limbs going, two arms, two legs and they are all working independently. You have all that coordination going on and then you have to remember the songs so not an easy job; I must admit I make loads of mistakes every time we play. We tried introducing a metronome to the sets to keep the songs at a constant speed but we scrapped that idea as we play faster now than we did years ago. You would think as we got older we would slow down.

When Feargal Sharkey decided to leave the band you decided to break up and it was 16 years till you played again, why? Maybe a couple of years after we broke up, we got a letter from our management saying there was an offer for the band to reform and I could not believe the amount of money, I thought it was a typing error I then phoned Michael and he was ecstatic as if he had won the lottery and we thought the only person who would not reform would be John and Fergal would jump at the chance but it was the complete opposite, it was Fergal who was not interested. We even ask John Peel to try to

persuade Fergal but he still did not want to know. It would have been a small nest egg for everybody. And the next year another offer came with even more money came through and so on and every time Fergal declined but we did actually reform with Fergal for John Peel’s 60th but unfortunately that did not happen because John and Damian’s father passed away when we were rehearsing; we did get back together, this time without Fergal in 1999 when we recruited Paul McLoone to be the lead singer and Paul has been with us longer than Fergal. What is your favourite Undertones song? Guess it is one of the songs we do called “Dig Yourself Deep”, it is a more up to date song from our 2007 album of the same name or “I’m Recommending Me” from the same album and I love doing those live. What do you do to relax when you are not working? I have two dogs, King Charles spaniels called Bobby and Oscar, they take up a bit of my time but I am really in to gardening and have been for years. I have recently built a house and I am still sorting the garden out. Do you still live in Derry? Yes, so do Michael and John. Damian lives in London and Paul lives in Dublin because he works on Today FM radio. I never see myself leaving Derry. All my family and friends are here. See The Undertones live on stage on Friday 29 July at The Harpenden Public Halls

“It’s Common Sense!”

This is the frustrated expression we often hear from our clients when an employee is performing badly at work. “It’s not rocket science” is another one. Before judging the person’s performance, employers should ask themselves some key questions regarding their own input to the employee’s:

• Recruitment – such as the questions and competencies involved

• Probationary period – what actions, reviews, developmental support took place?

• Management – including feedback and review process, management style Consensus HR always encourages employers to look at their own responsibilities within this type of situation. “Asking about the recruitment and support process often highlights different contributory factors leading to poor employees’ performance” explains Matthew Pinto-Chilcott of Consensus HR. “Covering all areas of the Employee Life Cycle will ensure that employers get the most from their teams” adds Matthew. This includes stages of recruitment, development, law, training & development, rewards & incentives through to saying goodbye in the correct way. “Having the correct policies & procedures in place and actively practicing them will result in a motivated team with an increase in sales and reduction in turnover.” The probationary period is a key stage in ensuring that employees will be able to deliver what is required of their role. Consensus HR has developed a three-month probationary workbook. It allows clients with new employees to take ownership of their development within the first three months of their new role with full support from the manager or business owner. The workbook’s process multiplies over time with continual planned feedback sessions. It puts the emphasis on the new employees to develop and ask questions if they are unsure about any tasks or their role. This helps them to become a valued member of the team within the first three months of employment. If this doesn’t happen, then the business is able to say goodbye knowing that appropriate action and support has taken place. Matthew explains: “This tool proved invaluable when having to deal with a recent race discrimination case. It enabled the business owner to demonstrate that the reasons for the person not getting the permanent role did not involve their colour or gender. We were able to show that they were not up to the role and had not been treated less favourably despite being successful at the first stage of recruitment and the interview.” It is never fair or safe to assume that you understand the reason for poor performance. Appropriate systems need to be in place to determine the real reasons, such as:

Page 8: Sticks July & August 2016

8

• a performance review process that includes personal and company SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable/Assignable, Relevant/Realistic, Time-bound/Time related) objectives

• regular identification of development needs are identified and met for the team

• having a frank discussion with an individual (about their performance and what is expected of him/her)

Ultimately, it is important to explain how the business can help and agree what is to be achieved going forward - and by when. Healthy, productive teams need regular communication, documented for future use whether congratulations or official warnings are in order. Contact Matthew to find out about our Probationary Workbook and how it will help you.

“CALL THE MEDIATOR” - Does Family Mediation work?

The latest “fly on the wall” documentary from the BBC follows a family mediator helping couples agree the terms of their separation or divorce. From whether to sell the family home, to how much maintenance to pay, or how often one of them can take the children on holiday. It can be a minefield. So how does Mediation Work? The first thing to remember is that mediation is voluntary, so both parties need to agree to try it out, and which mediator to approach. The Mediator will then usually want to speak to each party individually before setting up meetings for everyone to attend. Each party gets the chance to raise the issues or concerns they have, and the Mediator will endeavour to get the other party to listen to them before expressing their own views. If discussing the family finances, the Mediator will also help the parties agree on what information and documentation they each need to provide to assist with the negotiations. The meetings can be stressful if agreement is not easily reached on a point, but the Mediator is specially trained to deal with this situation. They can even do “shuttle mediation” with each party in a separate room if the parties’ relationship has got to the stage where they cannot be in the same room as each other. Between the mediation meetings each party should ideally obtain independent legal advice so they know what terms would be reasonable to propose or accept. If terms can be agreed between the parties, the Mediator will provide a written Memorandum of Understanding. This is not yet legally binding on them – but is evidence of what has been discussed and agreed, and can be taken to a family solicitor to be made legally binding. If the mediation breaks down, the Mediator can sign a court form to allow one of the parties to start court proceedings to resolve the issue if they wish. Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting (MIAMS) There is currently a requirement in place that you must at least attend a MIAMS before starting most court proceedings regarding children or family finances - to find out whether Mediation would be suitable for you. This is a one to one meeting with a Family Mediator who explains all the alternative routes available to try and resolve the dispute without starting court proceedings. The aim is to ensure you are informed about all the options and understand what route would work best for your situation. There are certain exemptions in place – for example if it is an urgent case. If you would like more information on Mediation, please contact: Clare Pilsworth a Family Mediator and Family Law Solicitor on [email protected] or 01763 241 261. Curwens have offices in Royston, Hoddesdon and Enfield.

Russell Grant's Monthly Horoscopes – August

ARIES March 21st - April 20th The beginning of August will be highly romantic. This is a wonderful time to embark on a love affair, get engaged or exchange wedding vows. The New Moon on the 2nd is perfect

for declaring your devotion. Alternatively, you may decide to take a big risk. This gamble will pay off handsomely. Don't play it safe during the first half of the month, as it will be rife with growth potential. A Lunar Eclipse on the 18th will mark the end of a group project. You should be proud of your work with this organisation. Use it as a launching pad for bigger and better assignments. Resist the urge to discuss controversial subjects like religion, politics and race during the second half of August. It's better to maintain a tactful silence when these topics are being discussed. Your discretion could attract a lucrative job offer from a previous employer. This will be a great chance to earn extra cash.

TAURUS April 21st - May 21st Your home life will be a great source of joy in the opening days of August. Hosting a family reunion is advised on or around the 2nd, when the New Moon will favour such gatherings.

Avoid playing mind games with a potential partner during the first half of the month; it's better to take a straightforward approach. Money for a deposit on a home could become available during August, thanks to a generous relative. The Lunar Eclipse on the 18th brings an end to a stressful career matter. This will give you an opportunity to operate independently. You might decide to take another job or work on a freelance basis. Performing work that seems like play is a strong possibility at the end of the month. A former lover may try to tempt you back into a relationship at the end of July. Be wary about giving your heart to this manipulator.

GEMINI May 22nd - June 21st Your gift with words will be at its strongest in early August. Use the power of the New Moon on the 2nd to launch a writing project or promotional campaign. If you're

single, think about posting an intriguing profile on an Internet dating service. You're sure to get lots of responses. Home life could get stressful during August. It will be difficult to connect with a workaholic who spends every waking moment at the office. Instead of waiting around for their company, it may be better to enjoy some solitary pleasures. Sex with an Ex Losing a relationship can be a very traumatic experience, even if you are the partner who calls time on the relationship. Often the longer you have been together the more difficult this can be, as greater attachment bonds have formed. In the case of parents, you have children who bind you together even when you separate, and this can make any separation and the emotions evoked, very complex. As partners you also have a shared history, family and friendship groups. Letting go of this can be scary and lonely. As such at times the temptation to revisit familiar and comfortable sex can be overwhelming, bearing in mind that you once thought this person “hot” before the problems you experienced broke you up. Sex with an ex, however enjoyable, is not going to put right what broke you up. It can also give mixed messages between the partners and any children, who if they see Mum and Dad sharing a bed together, may interpret that as the parents getting together again. It can also be confusing if new partners are on the scene, as your involvement with your ex will involve dishonestly and compromise new relationships. Also, of course, there are the related health issues and safe sex to consider. Before you get intimate with you ex here are a few things to consider: ● Is the sex about love or fear of being alone? ● Are you trying to avoid the pain of an ending by holding on your relationship? ● Is sex with the ex going to stop you moving on and making the changes that you want and perhaps need to? ● What will the cost be to each of you of the confusion that may ensue from the sex? Splitting with a partner is about just that, and sex with an ex, may just delay the inevitable end, and prevent you moving on to a more stable healthy relationship. If on the other hand you want to make an ex relationship work, then it would be a good idea to work on the underlying issues that broke you up so that you can re-build the relationship before resuming the sex. A sex and relationship therapist can help you with this. Sessions are available from just £15.00 (subject to status)

Summer Immune Boosting

It’s obvious we need to boost our well-being during the winter but during summer months it’s still important to eat a rainbow of foods and get the right vitamins and minerals. I’d strongly advise hitting the great farmers markets in Herts, (I love the St Albans one) and grab copious amounts of fresh fruit and veg. that is seasonal and locally grown. For when you need a bit help supplement wise, Vitamin C is the obvious one, it has powerful beauty, skin and health benefits, it’s a brilliant antioxidant to use during the summer months as it protects our skin from free radical cell damage caused by toxins, pollutants and excess sun exposure and it plays a vital role in the production of collagen for a more youthful, plumped up, healthy glow. It can even improve the appearance of cellulite. There is a myriad of other health benefits from Vitamin C including lessening the symptoms of hay fever , it can accelerate the livers ability to detoxify and so it’s a great support for anyone who is on a cleanse. It can also support healthy joints and mobility and improve muscle recovery and performance, particularly in people who are very active. This wonder vitamin is also said to aid recovery from bacterial, viral and parasitic infections and can help protect against degenerative diseases. I’ve just found Altrient C, the world’s first liposomal vitamin C gel. Unlike other oral vitamin C products this has an absorption rate of a staggering 98% absorption, directly to the cells where it’s needed most. It’s also GMO, Sugar, Gluten and Dairy free, and I’m not alone being a fan, it’s loved by health and beauty advocates

Gwyneth Paltrow and Suki Waterhouse. They’ve got the boxes ticked too, it’s been scientifically proven to deliver outstanding anti- ageing benefits and in clinical trials, proven to naturally improve skin elasticity and firmness by 61% in just 16 weeks, with a noticeable reduction in fine line and wrinkles, so skin looks firmer and healthier. These people took three sachets a day over four months, but just one sachet a day saw an impressive 35% improvement in the appearance of their skin, I’ll report back on the cellulite!

Hero Cheese of the Month – Rachel … A very special cheese

White Lakes Cheese Ltd. produces divine artisan cheese out of goat, sheep and cows milk. Opened in 2005 White Lake Cheese has quickly established it's self as a leading brand in the artisan cheese industry. Move on to 2014 and they have expanded their operation with a new building to complement the existing structure. The replacement of their aging cheese making room has provided them with double the floor space to help them cope with larger production numbers. The

new build has also given them chance to refurbish their original space, with work still ongoing. One of their amazing cheeses is Rachel. Rachel is a rustic, raw milk goat's cheese, a rare gem that comes to us in darling, pebbly-rinded wheels from White Lake Cheese at Bagborough Farm in Somerset, England. This cheese is made in a classic "colander shape" and is washed with brine during aging. Beneath its speckled rind, dusted with a bit of character-inducing white mould, is a gorgeous, cheese that offers a savoury, slightly sweet flavour. The cheese maker, White Lake's Pete Humphries, says that "Rachel was named after a friend of his - like the cheese she is sweet, curvy and slightly nutty". Well, shouldn't we all like to be memorialized as such! Pair this farmhouse cheese with Pinot Noir, pale ales, or cider. It won a Gold Medal Winner for Best Goat's Cheese at the 2007 British Cheese Awards. They can boost awards going back to 2007 - British Cheese Awards - Best Goat Cheese, 2009 - British Cheese Awards - Best Semi Soft Cheese, 2012 - World Cheese Awards - Super Gold, 2015 - British Cheese Awards – Gold and 2015 - Mondial du Fromage - Gold Medal. This award winning artisan cheese produced in Phylle in Somerset is now available at The Cheese Plate in Buntingford.

Strawberry Time

Summer is really here at last and you know it’s summer when you find yourself gorging on delicious Strawberries. To buy and eat, pick your own, or, grow your own. Like nearly all fruit the freshest, ripest, strawberries are the best, and rarely found in the supermarket where shelf life is more important than taste. Here are some fun facts about strawberries: 1. Strawberries are the first fruit to ripen in the spring 2. Most supermarket strawberries are the El

Strawberries can help whiten your teeth? The acids in the fruit help to remove stains. 7. They are full of a special substance called ellagic acid which can help fight cancers. 8. Also full of flavonoids, which form part of the strawberry’s red colour. They are known to help reduce cholesterol from clogging up the heart’s arteries. 9. Eight strawberries have more vitamin C than an orange, 140% of our daily recommended amount. 10. Strawberries can also be white or yellow and some can even taste like pineapples. 11. The strawberry and raspberry plants, are members of the rose family. 12. Eating strawberries, which are rich in nitrate, can increase the flow of blood & oxygen to the muscles by 7%. Restaurant Review – Black Horse, Woburn

Popular eatery, The Black Horse in Woburn has recently reopened following a complete refurbishment. The pub has emerged from its refit looking smart and welcoming, and with a stylish new look that accentuates all its traditional features and brings out the best in this gorgeous 18th century inn. Created by head chef Harry Wilson and sous Neal Grimble (who took home the silver for best chef in this year's Milton Keynes Food & Leisure Awards) is a brand new summer menu.

The Sticks recently went along to try the fresh new offerings The cosy, low-ceilinged interior is positively glowing with its warm colour scheme of rich oranges, reds and rusts offset by touches of soft blue and silver are the first things you notice as you enter the establishment. The menu has a vast selection of dishes and host weekly food themed night including Steak night and a daily special board. I ordered from the starter selection - Salt and Pepper Cornish Squid, Saffon Aioli – tender and tasty Squid without being over seasoned, with the Saffron aioli a welcome accompaniment; my guest had the Marinated Feta, Courgette, Broad Bean & Mint Salad – lots of Feta, sweet broad beans, just enough mint to taste refreshing.

For main course we had Pan - Fried Duck Breast, Duck Fat Potato, Rainbow Carrots & Swiss Chard - a beautiful, moist and tender breast of duck cooked pink as I requested, with a divine potato cooked in duck fat, crunchy carrots and tasty chard and Roasted Hake Fillet, King Prawn & Cauliflower Thai Curry & Coriander –the creamy cauliflower curry had enough spice to taste but not overpower the

23

perfectly cooked hake with a great crispy skin and prawns, with a good bite on the cauliflower

I followed the delicious main course with Strawberry Panacotta with Mixed Berry Compote & Chocolate – one of my favourite desserts and this did not disappoint, this was from the specials board and it sure was special.

Page 24: Sticks July & August 2016

24

My guest chose Valrhona Chocolate & Raspberry Mousse with Pecan Cookies – a creamy, light and very chocolaty mousse with gorgeous soft cookies. Tasty and yummy

To round the meal off we had a Single Smidgen of Cheese - a small portion of Alex James’s (expert Cheese maker and former member of Blur) Cheese Blue Monday. Made near Thirsk in the Yorkshire Dales by the Bell sisters, Blue Monday is a rich, creamy blue. It looks gentle but packs a powerful punch of complex sweet and salty flavour, which we loved

We visited The Black Horse a while ago and the food and service was excellent and I did not think it could be improved on but I was wrong, this is an ideal place to go to eat whether for a midweek supper out, a special occasion or a late breakfast.
