Dear doctoral candidates,herewith we would like to invite you to the upcoming events this Winter Term for doctoral candidates at TUM! As some of you already know, this program is financially supported by the DAAD & the TUM Graduate School and aims to show you more of the facets of TUM and its surroundings, as well as to encourage networking among doctoral candidates attending TUM.As in the last semesters your partner and/or your children are warmly welcome to join the events as well. Furthermore you might be able to take a friend with you provided that there are free places available. For more details about the registration and payment, please read the information following the events.Last but not least we would like to point your attention to the TUM Graduate School (TUM-GS) which represents an innovative approach in doctoral education at TUM. All doctoral candidates can use the services and resources offered by TUM-GS. In order to do so, you need to register at your Graduate Center and are then able to take part in a wide range of advanced training and collaborative seminars.

Doctoral candidates form the heart of the research culture here at the Technische Universität München. The TUM Graduate School therefore particularly promotes interdisciplinary and international qualification programs. It thus ensures that at the end of their doctoral program, young and talented scientists will not only have vital skills such as team leadership and project management skills, but alsothe entrepreneurial spirit all of which are crucial in shouldering responsibilities in leading roles within industry, academia and science.

Furthermore, for a quick and successful completion of your doctoral degree, the TUM Graduate Schoolensures attentive supervision through both an academic supervisor and an independent mentor as well as interim evaluations.

The TUM Graduate School´s networking events offer our doctoral candidates the possibility to develop points of contact with the latest research projects of other disciplines and the opportunity to further develop existing ones.

Our thirteen Faculty Graduate Centers and ten interdisciplinary Thematic Graduate Centers providedoctoral candidates with subject specific courses focusing especially on their individual researchareas in addition to individual guidance.

Last but not least the exclusive STIBET events funded by DAAD provide doctoral candidates with the possibiliy to network with other fellow colleagues and to get to know Munich and its cultural heritage.

Climbing Forest GrünwaldWhen: Saturday, September 22nd 2012Time: 12:00 am (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: 14€Enjoy an adventure in beautiful natural scenery and face a lot of physical challenges. Scrambling up the trees, balancing on swaying bridges, climbing walls and nets - all of this and much more awaits you in the climbing forest Munich. Four parkours with different difficulty levels provide diverse challenges and opportunities to all users. After a short safety training and provided with the necessary equipment you can start to try out your physical skills and your self-confidence, which will probably surprise yourself.

City Tram TourWhen: Saturday, October 6th 2012Time: 13.30 pm (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: 9€A historical tram will take you to an exciting tour where you can see all the important points of Munich‘s old town. After the tour we are going to visit the most famous churches of the city, which are also trademarks of Munich’s landscape – the Frauenkirche and the St. Peter church – and climb the tower of the latter one to enjoy the view over roofs of Munich. We also invite you to a tour through the food market where you can try some Bavarian specialties.

Campus Tour: WeihenstephanWhen: Thursday, October 18th 2012Time: 10 am (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: freeDuring our tour through the TUM Campus in Weihenstephan you will get an insight into the structure of the science center Weihenstephan. We will show you all faculties and explain all you need to know about your research place during working on your doctoral project. We also invite you to have dinner and drinks together on the old academy hill with a splendid view over the campus. After the event you can take one of our original TUM bags filled with our TUM Welcome Package with you.

Third Reich Guided Tour When: Sunday, November 4th 2012Time: 2 pm (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: 8€Adolf Hitler made Munich to the midpoint of his regime and propaganda system. Beginning at the Marienplatz we will follow the stations of the seizure of power and the terror regime of the dictator looking at all interesting locations relating to his rise to power and its consequences, including early headquarters and centers of resistance. After the tour we can sit together in one of the Munich’s cafes and consider this side of Munich’s history while drinking coffee and eating a trifle, which you are invited to.

Nicolaus Network MeetingWhen: Thursday, December 6th 2012Time: 7 pm (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: freeIn a relaxed atmosphere you will have the opportunity to get in contact with other TUM doctoral candidates and to intensify already existing acquaintances and friendships. There will be also a possibility to watch a movie together and try German specialties like mulled wine and cookies offered to you in a Christmas buffet. Come and let us spend a nice evening together in the atmosphere of the approaching Christmas!

Jungle Book MusicalWhen: Wednesday, December 12th 2012Time: 6:30 pm (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: 16€The famous Jungle Book is a collection of stories written by British author Rudyard Kipling. Also due to the adaptation by Disney it is known around the world. Musicals are an easily accessible form of culture which can be understood by all irrespective of language level. We offer you an exciting experience of musical version of the beautiful story performed as a collaboration of Deutsches Theater and the theater company Gärtnerplatz.

BMW MuseumWhen: Sunday, January 20th 2013Time: 2 pm (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: 7 €The BMW Museum presents itself in its new design and extraordinary modern exhibiting arrangement. Around 5,000 sqm exhibition space, 120 rare exhibition pieces (cars, bikes, even airplane engines) – the BMW Museum offers a fascinating guided tour into the world of car constructors. The Tour will provide you with detailed and comprehensive background information on interesting and innovative exhibits. A visit in the world famous and innovative BMW center is without any doubt a great opportunity for doctoral candidates of engineering subjects, as well as for anybody else.

Intercultural TrainingWhen: Thursday, January 31st 2013Time: 3 pm (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: freeThe aim of the workshop is to provide doctoral candidates with important information about all the questions related to the visa, health insurance, as well as to other things which can be useful in your everyday life in Germany. It will also give you the opportunity to understand the Germans and their characteristics better, which can be very helpful especially for those who come from a completely different cultural background. Additionally getting together for having some lunch and drinks allows you to get in personal contact with your doctoral fellows in a nice and relaxed atmosphere. As special introduction to the TUM you will also receive an original TUM bag including a Welcome Package to take with you.

Flea Market NightWhen: Saturday, February 2nd 2013Time: 7 pm (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: 5€Munich’s largest flea market is located in the Kultfabrik and always offers an exciting experience of alternative shopping. In addition to this there are particularly fascinating events accompanied by live music of indie rock bands. Together we will take a walk around the flea market area where everybody may possibly discover some special things for themselves. Of course there will also be a possibility to eat and drink something together, which you are invited for. Overally speaking this is a very varied and quite alternative event for everybody who is willing to try something new or just spend a nice evening with others.

Public Observatory and Planetarium When: Monday, February 25th 2013Time: 7:00 pm (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: 4€At the Bavarian Public Observatory Munich we will be enjoying a guided evening tour and a lecture about our solar system and astronomy. Afterwards we will be able to take part in a guided planetarium show which beats regular cinema every time. On evenings with clear skies the 300 square meters sized observation platform located at an altitude of 35 meters above street level provides a splendid view over the city of Munich and the Alps.

Winter Sledging: WallbergWhen: Sunday, March 10th 2013Time: 10:30 am (Meeting point will be announced after registration)Fee: 15€For this special and very exciting winter event we will go by train to the mountains and then a special ropeway will take us to the mountain peak where the great adventure begins. Up there we will have typical alpine lunch with everything that bavarian food has to offer. Afterwards we are going to go down the mountain on the 6,5 kilometer sledging tracks, which will take about half an hour! It is going to be a very exciting sport activity and you will also have the opportunity to experience the beautiful German Alps during winter time.

Registration

Registration

Please register online under: www.tum.de/gs/doktoranden/anmeldung After this, you will receive an e-mail with all payment details. Your registration will only become official after you have made the payment and send a confirmation e-mail.

Withdrawal

If you want to withdraw your registration, please do so at least 1 week prior via e-mail. In case of a cancellation your fee can only be returned if we can find someone else to take your place. Should you not appear on the day of the event we will not be able to refund your fee. Should this happen twice, you will not be considered for the rest of the events during the term!

Extra Information

The events will only take place with a sufficient number of participants. About one week prior to the event you will get more details about the meeting point as well as other organisatorial information.

Also notice that taking part in the activities is at one´s own risk. The TUM-GS will assume no liability!

German Language Courses

TUM Graduate School German language courses

We offer you a module that builds upon the level A1 of the German language. Participants will achieve a working knowledge of German with general language orientation under the consideration of intercultural and regional aspects. Participants will gain team working skills via cooperative work in mixed multinational groups. Online DUO courses

We are happy to be able to offer you free places at the DUO-online-German language course. DUO means Deutsch-Uni Online (www.deutsch-uni.com) and offers interactive and flexible learning of the German language. You decide when to take time for your course. It combines language acquisition with the transfer of technical and practical knowledge. Learners may use DUO to prepare themselves ideally for study or research by enhancing or deepening their language skills. Our offer is addressed to those of you who already have basic German language knowledge and would therefore start with level B1/2 or level C1/2 in the fields of Nature, Economy, Technics, Biology or Medicine.If you are interested, please send an e-mail with your German language certificate minimum Level A2 to [email protected].

Vouchers for German language courses

We can also offer you a 50€ voucher for any German course completed from January 2012 on. Please send the original invoice of your German course as well as a certificate of sucsessfull completion of the course to the TUM Welcome Office to [email protected] and apply for the voucher. Please also include your home address in the application.

You can find all courses offered by the TUM Language Center under www.tum-sprachen.de. Directions to the office:You can reach the TUM Graduate School by taking the underground line U6 in direction „Garching Forschungszentrum“. This is also the stop you must get off. Please walk to the exit in the front (in driving direction) and take the escalator. As soon as you get out of the underground station, you will see a square building with red, yellow, black and white colored accents next to the mechanical engineering faculty. This is the TUM Graduate School building and my office is on the second floor.
