St. Gregory’s Acolyte Of The Year

Benjamin Sweeting

Benjamin was honoured as St. Gregory’s Acolyte of the Year for his exuberance and dedication to serving around God’s holy altar. He continues to uphold our high standards and always ministers with joy and determination. He is most mannerly, obedient, and displays leadership qualities. We are so very proud of him and extend our congratulations. Benjamin follows in the footsteps of his brother Walton, last year’s AOTY. Benjamin is the son of Charlene Sweeting. Arthur and Vellora Sweeting are his grandparents.

Congratulations! Keep up the great work! GPA AWARD WINNERS

Be thoughtful, be silent, and be reverent, for this is the House of God. Before the service, speak to the Lord;

during the service, let the Lord speak to you; after the service, speak to one another.

M I N I S T R Y O F T H E W O R D

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Your faithful, and kindle in us the fire of Your Love. Send forth Your Spirit and we shall be created and You shall renew the face of the earth. O God, Who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit, we may be truly wise, and ever rejoice in Your consolations, through Christ our Lord, Amen. PROCESSIONAL HYMN … “Lo, He Comes With Clouds Descending” - 46 CPWI LITURGY OF THE ADVENT WREATH

Leader: Blessed are You, Sovereign Lord, just and true, to You be praise and glory for ever! Of old You spoke by the mouth of Your prophets but in our days You speak through your Son whom You have appointed the Heir of all things. Grant us, Your people, to walk in His Light that we may be found ready and watching when He comes in glory and judgment; for You are our Light and our Salvation. Blessed be God for ever. Leader: God our Father, You spoke to the prophets of old of a Saviour who would bring peace. You helped them to spread the joyful message of His coming kingdom. Help us, as we prepare to celebrate His birth, to share with those around us the Good News of Your power and love. We ask this through Jesus Christ, the Light who is coming into the world. BLESSING AND LIGHTING OF CANDLE

ALL: Lord Jesus, Light of the world, the prophets said You would bring peace and save Your people in trouble. Give peace in our hearts at Christmastide and show all the world God’s love. LITANY OF THE FOUR LAST THINGS God the Father, God the Son, God the Spirit, three in one. Hear us from Thy heavenly throne, Spare us, Holy Trinity.

Jesu, Life of those who die, Advocate with God on high, Hope of immortality Hear us, Holy Jesu.

Thy Whose Death to mortals gave Power to triumph o'er the grave Living now from death to save, Hear us, Holy Jesu. Thou before Whose great white Throne All our doings must be show, Pleading now for us, Thine own Hear us, Holy Jesu.

Thou Who Death was borne that we, From the power of Satan free, Might not die eternally Hear us, Holy Jesu. Thou Who dost a place prepare, That in heavenly mansions fair, Sinners may Thy glory share, Hear us, Holy Jesu.

JUDGEMENT

When Thy summons we obey, On the dreadful Judgement Day, Let not fear our soul dismay: Hear us, Holy Jesu. While the lost in terror fly, May we see with joyful eye Our Redemption drawing nigh: Hear us, Holy Jesu.

May we see Thee on Thy Throne, As the Saviour we have known, And have follow'd as our own, Hear us, Holy Jesu. May we then. among the blest, Who Thy Name on earth confess'd Hear Thee calling us to rest; Hear us, Holy Jesu.

ENTRANCE ANTIPHON …………………………………………………………………. BCP p97 PREPARATION, ETC ……………………………………………………………………. BCP p101 THE COLLECT(S) ……………………………… Second Sunday Of Advent - BCP p157 FIRST LESSON 8:15 AM - YOUTH Reader: A Reading from the Word of God written in Isaiah 40:1-11.

Comfort, O comfort My people, says your God. 2 Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that she has served her term, that her penalty is paid, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.

3 A voice cries out: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God. 4 Every valley shall be lifted up, and every mountain and hill be made low; the uneven ground shall become level, and the rough places a plain. 5 Then the glory of the Lord shall be revealed, and all people shall see it together, for the mouth of the Lord has spoken.”

6 A voice says, “Cry out!” And I said, “What shall I cry?” All people are grass, their constancy is like the flower of the field. 7 The grass withers, the flower fades, when the breath of the Lord blows upon it; surely the people are grass. 8 The grass withers, the flower fades; but the word of our God will stand for ever. 9 Get you up to a high mountain, O Zion, herald of good tidings; lift up your voice with strength, O Jerusalem, herald of good tidings, lift it up, do not fear; say to the cities of Judah, “Here is your God!” 10 See, the Lord God comes with might, and His arm rules for Him; His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him. 11 He will feed His flock like a shepherd; He will gather the lambs in His arms, and carry them in His bosom, and gently lead the mother sheep.

PSALM …………………………………………………………..…….….. Ps. 85:1-7 - BCP p579 SECOND LESSON 8:15 AM - YOUTH Reader: A Reading from the Word of God written in 2 Peter 3:8-15a, 18.

8 But do not ignore this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like one day. 9

The Lord is not slow about His promise, as some think of slowness, but is patient with you, not wanting any to perish, but all to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a loud noise, and the elements will be dissolved with fire, and the earth and everything that is done on it will be disclosed.

11 Since all these things are to be dissolved in this way, what sort of people ought you to be in leading lives of holiness and godliness, 12

waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be set ablaze and dissolved, and the elements will melt with fire? 13 But, in accordance with His promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home.

14 Therefore, beloved, while you are waiting for these things, strive to be found by Him at peace, without spot or blemish; 15a and regard the patience of our Lord as salvation.

18 But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and to the day of eternity. Amen.

Reader: The Word of the Lord. Response: Thanks be to God. GRADUAL HYMN ………....... “On Jordan’s Bank The Baptist’s Cry” - 42 CPWI

+ THE GOSPEL + Reader: The Lord be with you. Response: And also with you. Reader: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark 1:1-8. Response: Glory to Christ our Saviour.

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

2 As it is written in the prophet Isaiah, “See, I Am sending My messenger ahead of you, who will prepare Your way; 3 the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make His paths straight,”” 4 John the baptizer appeared in the wilderness, proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins. 5 And people from the whole Judean countryside and all the people of Jerusalem were going out to him, and were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 6 Now John was clothed with camel’s hair, with a leather belt around his waist, and he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 He proclaimed, “The One Who is more powerful than I is coming after me; I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the thong of His sandals. 8 I have baptized you with water; but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”

O quickly come, great King of all; Reign all around us, and within; Let sin no more our souls enthrall, Let pain and sorrow die with sin. O quickly come: for Thou alone Canst make Thy scatter’d people one.

O quickly come, true Life of all; For death is mighty all around; On every home his shadows fall, On every heart his mark is found. 2012 we must put emphasis on youth and children and make whatever we do be friendly to these two groups.

Ours must be one of complimentary planning and execution over and against the competitive element that so regularly exposes its unacceptable face.

Let us use the month of October for serious planning and have those plans into the office by mid November.

There are only a few weeks left in 2011. It’s time for the family of Saint Gregory to focus on plans and programmes for 2012. We must have harmony in all efforts so that we’ll have no clashing and better plan for events.

Now it is the opportunity to evaluate programmes of this passing year, scrap and enhance as we project to the future.

THE LORD’S PRAYER, ETC. …………….......…………………...................... BCP p144 COMMUNION ………………………………………………………………. “Christ Returneth”

It may be at morn, when the day is awaking, When sunlight through darkness and shadow is breaking That Jesus will come in the fullness of glory To receive from the world “His own.”

O Lord Jesus, how long, how long Ere we shout the glad song, Christ returneth! Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Amen. Hallelujah! Amen.

It may be at midday, it may be at twilight, It may be, perchance, that the blackness of midnight Will burst into light in the blaze of His glory, When Jesus receives “His own.” While its hosts cry Hosanna, from heaven descending, With glorified saints and the angels attending, With grace on His brow, like a halo of glory, Will Jesus receive “His own.” Oh, joy! oh, delight! should we go without dying, No sickness, no sadness, no dread and no crying. Caught up through the clouds with our Lord into glory, When Jesus receives “His own.”

CHILDREN’S HYMN POST COMMUNION PRAYER ………………………………………………..…... BCP p148 THE BLESSING ……………………………………………………………………………. BCP p150 THE DISMISSAL ……………………………………………………….…………………. BCP p152 RECESSIONAL …………………………………………………… “His Coming Draweth Nigh” Lift up your heads, ye saints, we’re told redemption draweth nigh, Ere long His glory we’ll behold as lightning from on high; We’ve toiled and prayed and waited here, but soon His face we’ll see, And when He comes He’ll dry each tear, and we the Bride shall be. His coming draweth nigh, we’ll meet Him in the sky, And go with Him to the marriage feast somewhere on high; Oh, what a time ‘twill be, our loved ones we will see, Far up above the tribulation by and by.

Farewell, gay world, our song shall be, we’ll sing it thru the air, Above the rugged hills and trees His wondrous glory share; Lift up, look up, still watch and pray, tho’ fading be your eye, Nor think His coming be delayed, it surely draweth nigh. Around the festive board that day we’ll raise a mighty shout, Like many waters of the sea, we’ll sing and dance about; The angels cannot sing the song, they’ll stand with folded wings And wonder at the praise prolong, we’ll crown Him King of Kings.

THE ADVENT WREATH

1. The Advent Wreath has four red, purple or blue candles in a ring around a white or gold candle. Sometimes it has three of the colours mentioned and one rose and one white. The first candle is lit on Advent Sunday; additional ones are lit, one on each Sunday, and the white or gold one on Christmas Day.

2. The new candle each week may appropriately be lit after the Introit Hymn.

3. All five candles may appropriately be alight during services through the Christmas season.

4. There are several traditions about the meaning or theme of each candle. The scheme that accords best with the Lectionary is:

Advent 1 - The Patriarchs, Advent 2 - The Prophets, Advent 3 - John the Baptist, Advent 4 - The Virgin Mary, Christmas - The Christ

5. Each of the four Sundays then reminds us of those who prepared for the coming of Christ. “The Patriarchs” can naturally focus on Abraham, our father in faith, and David, Jesus’ ancestor in whose city He was born. “The Prophets” give an opportunity to reflect on the way the birth of the Messiah was “foretold”. John, who proclaimed the Saviour, and Mary, who bore Him in her womb, completes the picture.

6. The prayers below reflect these four themes. The second and third prayers in each case are written with children in mind, and the third is to be said by the congregation together. Only one prayer need be used on any occasion, though the second and third fit well together in each case.

ALMEDA SHEILA CAMPBELL nee MCKENZIE

Tribute To A Mother

Born in the Bluff, Cat Island 26th August 1931 to the parentage of George and Jane McKenzie, she was the oldest of four children. Hard times was all they knew, however it got so extreme that as an eight year old, her mother borrowed a horse, saddled it with her two toddlers and putting all their worldly goods on their heads and shoulders, along with her brother fore day one morning they walked into the break of a new day, with hopes of a brighter future in Arthur’s Town. This was their promised land, to be home for the rest of her life. Eventually joined in holy matrimony to Sebastian Campbell, Mammie was bound to live a full life, free and fulfilling life.

This union produced fourteen of us, three are predeceased. We, the survivors are scattered throughout the Bahamas, West Indies and Florida. Mammie and Daddy were inextricably bound together this producing a happy, happy home. Poor by this world’s standards but rich in our togetherness as a family.

Mammie was fiercely loyal to anything to which she committed. These commitments included but not limited to: St. Andrew’s Church, The Arthur’s Town Community; Yes, indeed her family; her political party, eventually receiving highest honours as a stalwart councillor. She was a cultural icon, writing plays for church and school concerts, acting on stage, dancing home and abroad especially as fundraisers both for St. Andrews Anglican and St. James Baptist Church.

Almeda Campbell worked extremely hard, she never slunked. Early to bed and early to rise, so as to make sometimes a five mile trek to the white-land or little closer to Larrimores’. All places where fields were slashed, burned and cultivated. Every opportunity was seized to make money for the family, like plaiting, codeing rock, etc. She steeped us in hard work.

We, all her children, grew up in the church, all the nine boys were acolytes. Two of us eventually went on to become priests. There was to be no excuse for church and school. The belt was generously applied when we slipped up in these areas.

If only one had the educational opportunities there is no telling what higher heights she would have reached. If only there was the marketing for her talents and abilities… the rest is left to our imagination.

I thank God for her eighty years, the support given me, for shaping me. The last church in which she worshiped was here at St. Gregory. On 14th November, 2011, as she bade this world farewell, thank God I was simultaneously administering final rites. This weekend 3rd December 2011 we lay her to rest from the church she loved, St. Andrew’s, and in the grave yard next to Daddy.
