They picked up bagsful of plastic bottles, cans, packets, discarded toys and other waste, including a dirty nappy. Councillors have also offered to host a ‘village workshop’ to help spread the message. In addition, the Grapevine received some well‐researched information from two Year‐3 pupils at St Michael’s School. Seven‐ year‐old Jet Day and Daisy Krause, aged 8, wrote about the dangers to the food chain of plastic waste, including the catchy but worrying phrase, “A fish eats the plastic and you eat the fish!” They pointed out that the Stewkley Village Shop does not charge the 5p plastic bag tax (the tax is only compulsory for large businesses), and have urged everyone to politely decline such a bag if offered one, and to use instead their own re‐usable carriers. Last month Aston Abbotts hosted the annual Orchard Cup Competition for the Central Bucks and Chiltern branches of the Oxford Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers. This year the competition was combined with the Central Bucks Branch Competition that was cancelled in May. Eight teams entered and Stewkley were drawn to ring first, sixth and seventh. Each team must include at least four ringers from the tower they are representing with other ringers borrowed from local towers, and any ringer can only ring twice. Stewkley A rang first: Maddie, Jan, Sally, Darren, Ailsa and Neil. Stewkley B rang sixth: Maddie, Cassia, Ailsa, Bob, Ed and Jonathan. Stewkley C rang seventh: Cassia, Maeve, Sally, Bob, Jonathan and Paul. This was the first competition for Maddie, Neil and Maeve. The judges’ comments noted improvements with some faults for all teams. Stewkley teams A and C ended in sixth and seventh places respectively and Stewkley B won on 57 faults, only three faults ahead of the team in second place. We would like to thank Ed, Darren, Paul and Jan for joining us to make up the three teams. We would also like to thank the judges, John and Anne White from Towcester, and Jeremy and Anne Pratt for their organising. We are so proud of Maeve and Neil for being brave enough to ring for the judges. They were brilliant. If anyone would like to come and see what happens in the St Michael’s Church bell tower and maybe have a go, you would be very welcome on a Wednesday evening at 7.30pm. Stewkley is getting an environmental make‐over, thanks to two groups of local children who, independent of each other, have decided to take matters into their own hands, in their own time.

The first group to come to the Grapevine’s attention consisted of 11‐year‐olds Emily Axten Blackwell, Chloe Gibbs, Sanchia Kirchin and Sinead Drohan (pictured). They have formed a task force dedicated to clearing up litter, which disgusted them, in locations around the village that they love and respect. They picked up bagsful of plastic bottles, cans, packets, discarded toys and other waste, including a dirty nappy.

They then attended the October Parish Council meeting to urge the PC to use its power to influence other Councils and supermarkets to reduce plastic use, stop litter, reduce pollution, and encourage greater recycling. They pointed out that the Stewkley Village Shop does not charge the 5p plastic bag tax (the tax is only compulsory for large businesses), and have urged everyone to politely decline such a bag if offered one, and to use instead their own re‐usable carriers.

An ambitious project is underway to improve the outside toilets and play equipment at the Recreation Ground at a cost of around £130,000. Seventy‐thousand pounds has been secured from the AVDC New Homes Bonus scheme, £5,000 was raised by RecFest and a further £5,000 has been pledged by Stewkley Parish Council. Stewkley children raised £2,300 towards the project in a sponsored obstacle race (see page 5) and a bid has been submitted to FCC Communities Foundation. (FCC is the waste recycling company previously known as WREN.)

Could you help by making a donation? A crowdfunding site has been launched to raise £5,800 to pay for a shelter and picnic tables, where families and groups can sit in comfort while their children and grandchildren play on the new equipment. If you would like to give a donation towards this village project please visit spacehive.com/stewkley_recreation_ground or contact Janette Eustace on 240070 or 07802 967523.

VILLAGE NEEDS VILLAGERS from Janette Eustace Stewkley Tennis Club opened its doors at the end of September as

part of the Nature Valley Great British Tennis Weekend, a national event organised by the Lawn Tennis Association with the aim of encouraging as many people as possible to try tennis.

On the Saturday the courts were open for five hours in the afternoon for free play, and there was a steady trickle of families and visitors of all ages who tried their hand at tennis ‐ some who had never picked up a tennis racket before and others who had not played for several years but were keen to revive their love for the game.

On the Sunday, despite an unpromising weather forecast, the courts opened around lunchtime and again welcomed a few visitors. The club had hoped to run some coaching later that afternoon but unfortunately some torrential downpours, in addition to heavy rain the previous night, left standing water on the courts making them unplayable, leaving the club with no choice but to curtail the open weekend three hours early.

THE GREAT BRITISH RAIN‐OFF

Bucks County Council has published its annual winter service policy, an overarching policy that sets out its approach to providing winter services in the county and should see at least some of Stewkley’s roads given priority.

In summary, the objective is for the highway network (3,200km) and/or other agreed sites to remain safe and passable at all times, as far as reasonably possible, by pre‐treating to inhibit the formation of snow and ice and to post‐treat any accumulations.

As in previous years, the service will be focused on ‘priority routes’ that are sub‐divided into ‘primary’ and ‘secondary’ routes. Primary routes consist of approximately 1,400km of the county's A and B roads. For Stewkley this includes Mursley Road, Bletchley Road, High Street North, Soulbury Road, High Street South, Wing Road, Dunton Road through Littlecote, and Cublington Road. Secondary routes typically include the remaining classified roads plus unclassified roads serving communities of 200 dwellings or more, and roads with a gradient of at least 10%. There are no such routes in Stewkley parish.

Precautionary salting, to inhibit the formation of snow and ice, is carried out only on the primary routes when road surface temperatures are forecast to drop below 0.5 degrees centigrade. Precautionary salting may only be carried out on secondary routes, subject to resource availability, when accumulations of snow in excess of 20mm are forecast.

As for snow clearance, 20% of primary routes, Bucks’ most strategic roads, are cleared first. These include Mursley Road, High Street North and Soulbury Road. After that, attention is switched to the remaining primary routes and ad‐hoc requests made by the emergency services, followed by the secondary routes, then footways and cycleways in main shopping areas, other key pedestrian and cycle facilities, footways in busy urban areas serving schools, hospitals, and other remaining high‐use footways, remaining cycleways and other residential footways, and finally the remaining unclassified road network.

Bucks CC also maintains salt bins for use on the public highway that are restocked once a year.

WHEN WILL STEWKLEY’S ROADS BE GRITTED AND CLEARED

Victoria Molnar‐Brown came to the October meeting. She plays the Piano Accordion and we had a musical quiz covering a variety of topics, TV themes, musicals and dances. We were quite good at recognising the tunes but not so good at remembering where and when we had heard them.

The meeting on Tuesday 12 November will be the Annual General Meeting. It will start at 7.30pm in the Village Hall. There will be social time after the business of the evening.

For more details contact Sheila Fellowes (240596).

‘ACCORDION’ TO THE WI from Sheila Fellowes

Once again we will be starting the Festive Season in the Village Hall on Sunday 1 December with The Christmas Band Concert, held every year.

Music is supplied by Mike Crofts and Secklow Brass who play a variety of music intertwined with Christmas Carols. This gives the audience the chance to participate (words are provided). The concert starts at 7.30pm.

We provide coffee and mince pies, but please feel free to bring along your own refreshments, liquid or otherwise, especially if it helps you sing.

Entry is free. A collection will be taken at the interval, part of which goes to the Band to help with their expenses.

A Sunday Lunch will be held on 19 January 2020, more details in next month’s Grapevine.

THE BAND IS BACK! from Sheila Fellowes

Get Christmas off to a swing by joining Stewkley Singers for our 13th annual Music and Mince Pies on Saturday 7 December at 7.30pm in Stewkley Village Hall.

As well as traditional and modern carols, with opportunities to sing along, this year we shall be performing some favourite extracts from Handel’s Messiah. Mulled wine and mince pies will be served during the interval, and our now famous Christmas hampers will be raffle prizes.

Our evening of fun and traditional merriment was a sell‐out last year, so please order your tickets early – on sale at £8 for adults and £4 for children (including refreshments) from Julia Sims (240671) and Rachael Webb (240950).

MESSIAH WITH MINCE PIES from Stewkley Singers

According to the Royal Horticultural Society, grapevines need regular pruning and maintenance to keep them manageable and productive, the main pruning time being early winter.

So it is with the Stewkley Grapevine that it is becoming less manageable and needs a nip and a tuck here and there. At 24 pages every month (except January), it is a huge undertaking for our volunteer team – several of whom have day jobs and other commitments – and sometimes we make mistakes. A misplaced comma we can stomach; an accidentally deleted line that makes an ad or article uninformative, we can’t. There have been worse, but we're keeping those under wraps!

If you’d like to help us decide where to nip and tuck, while keeping the Grapevine as enjoyable to read as hopefully it is now, please email [email protected] or call 240950 for an initial chat.

STEWKLEY BELLRINGERS continued from front page

Despite the forecast of stormy weather and the actual odd shower, the children’s obstacle race went ahead at the Recreation Ground at the end of September.

Sixty children competed in races for four age ranges; the older the age range, the harder the challenge. Competition was fierce as children jostled for space to negotiate giant hay bales, jump over, crawl under and zigzag through various obstacles, stopping along the way to shoot a goal or bob for an apple. For the over‐10s, tyres were added at the ends of the hay tunnel, requiring them to wriggle on their tummies.

The winners and prizes were: • Ages 3‐5: Percy Lovel – a family pass donated by Thrift Farm

• 6‐7: John Taylor – a family pass donated by Mead Open Farm

• 8‐9: Jacob Ford – a family pass donated by Woburn Safari Park

• 10+: George Hull – a ticket for one adult and three children to visit an escape room donated by ‘Don’t Get Locked In’, based in Wing.

WEATHER WASN’T AN OBSTACLE from Janette Eustace

Twelve members of Stewkley Walkers met at the Bell Hotel, Winslow in early October for a circular walk around the town.

The walk took in the disused railway track near Moco Farm where the group ‘waited for a train on the new east‐west railway’ which will pass through that site (photo above).

The walk ended with an enjoyable lunch back at The Bell.

YOU WAIT ALL DAY FOR A TRAIN

The late‐September wedding ceremony at the Methodist Chapel was a very special occasion for more than just the bride, Cathy Faulkner, and groom Richard Hedges (photo left). It was the Revd Donna Broadbent‐Kelly’s first time ever presiding at a wedding.

The happy couple had kept their wedding a “secret”, but were more than happy to give the Grapevine a scoop.

DONNA’S FIRST WEDDING

The bellringing team with the Orchard Cup, which will now be installed in a space in the belltower that has been reserved

for it for many years.

Edith Monk and Annabel Webb, who came first in their heats, were given an Amazon gift voucher as a runner‐up prize. Joshua Bramford raised the most sponsorship, £185, and won a family visit to Gulliver’s Land.

Thank yous

Stewkley Recreation Ground Association is extremely grateful to everyone who made the event so successful. The star was Games Master Richard Ball, who helped design the difficult course, set off races, and coax participants. Time‐keeper Lynsey Short deserved a prize for running all of the races alongside the children.

Local farmers David Roff and David North provided hay bales and tractor tyres. These tyres and others provided by Hunter’s Garage and A&G Autos were used to create hurdles, tunnels and obstacles. A lorry tarpaulin was loaned by GRS Production and Logistics from the Hollingdon Depot. The rest of the equipment was donated by St. Michael’s School. Other sponsors include Stewkley Brownies, Hunters Garage, Doherty Tippers, Abbeymill Homes, Chase Distillery and Mrs Doreen Sawyer.

The children were sponsored by family and friends to complete the course and raised £1,520. Overall, the event raised £2,300 towards the new play equipment, for which the views of children and parents were sought during the event.

PC MATTERSThe following is extracted from the draft minutes provided by Stewkley Parish Council after its October meeting. Deputations: During the Open Forum, the PC received a deputation from the young Eco‐Warriors (see page 1). The Rec Committee reported on the Playground play equipment and toilets’ project (see page 4); the Council was asked to support the project by up to £5,000, which was later agreed. The Council also agreed to a request from Stewkley Scouts for £500 from the Community Fund for the annual fireworks display.

Planning and Development: Cllrs resolved to support application 19/03178/APP for a single‐storey front extension and internal alterations at Manor Drive. They also supported a proposed two‐storey side extension and garage conversion at 14 Bletchley Road but asked that any new windows that overlooked neighbouring gardens be semi‐transparent. In addition, the plans should be drawn to show the parking areas. Regarding application 19/03169/APP at Littlecote Farm for the demolition of the farm shop and erection of a permanent rural workers’ dwelling/garage and a farm shop, the Council agreed to support it subject to an agricultural tenancy agreement. The next stage of consultancy for the Neighbourhood Plan has started. The successful grant application for £8,000 from Groundworks will pay for Oneill Homer’s consultancy fees.

Finance: The Council agreed to accept the Devolved Formula extension offer. This funding would help to finance the original grass cutting and additional grass cutting following the withdrawal of Vale of Aylesbury Housing Trust from cutting highway verges. Councillors will meet with DCK Accounting Solutions for a half‐day of VAT advice. The following payments were confirmed: Royal British Legion (wreath) £18; E.ON £322.21; Clerk’s salary £602.09; Expenses £31; Travel £20.70; HMRC Income Tax (Clerk) £151.71, Employer’s NI £5.46; CPRE membership donation £36; PKF (auditors) £360; EHA web design £99; DLP planning (Paul Jobson – Neighbourhood Plan) £2,160; Enterprise Agency (grass cutting) £60.34; Oneill Homer (Neighbourhood Plan) £2,700; Gill Morgan (Best Kept Village) £10.58. And for the Recreation Ground: Broxap (bench) £775.20; Bunce (leaking valve) £324; PRS & PPL (music licencing) £288.48; MK Liquid Waste £204.

In and around the Recreation Ground: Deficiencies in the adult exercise equipment had been reported to the manufacturer and a response was awaited. Play around the Parishes was discussed, and early booking was agreed to take advantage of a discount. Expenses of £10.58 were agreed for refreshments at the Rec after the Best Kept Village presentation. A display location is to be found for the De Fraine Cup. For the Wildlife Reserve, £219.30 for seeds was agreed. And for the Burial Ground, mower repairs by R W Wright Engineering costing £120 were agreed along with petrol for the mower at £19.38. A donation for half the cost of the mower repair was accepted.

Highways, Footways and Footpaths Lighting: The Clerk gave a brief report on contacts with other PCs that had jointly researched LED street lighting with Stewkley in 2015. The following PCs showed interest in working together on the next steps: Penn, Edlesborough and Quainton. Wing PC intend to respond later. Three quotes for repairs to the ‘runway’ bollard lights have been received, Sparkx quote being the cheapest; wider discussions will follow. A quote has been received to restore the pole in Dove St to vertical and a quote for the replacement of the photo cells has been obtained. Further quotes are to be sought. Concerns were expressed at hedge removal and cars crossing the verge to park on Dove Street; VAHT will be contacted. The new Speed indicating device (SID) has been put in place. The cost of a new mounting kit was agreed. A meeting of the Traffic Subcommittee will be convened to continue traffic‐calming efforts. Drainage issues and long‐term flooding on Ivy Lane were discussed. BCC will be asked to clear the drain.

Miscellaneous: The annual Insurance renewal was noted. Fifty pounds was agreed for the pre‐winter tidy at the Airport Monument Spinney. Cllrs agreed £9 for purchase of the 1 tonne Hippobag. They also agreed for the regular cost of £80 for the removal of waste stored in the Hippobag. Future community bus trips include to St Albans, Milton Keynes and Poplars Nursery (near Toddington), which will be entirely self‐funding.

Date of next meeting at the Village Hall: Monday 4 November 7.30pm.

Bucks County Council has launched a new online Adoption Ready tool that lets anyone find out whether they are ready to become an adoptive parent.

People often think that some aspect of their life – such as age, financial situation, sexual orientation or relationship status – would rule them out as an adoptive parent. However, most of these assumptions are incorrect and Adoption Ready helps people find out whether they might be able to adopt one of the 22 children waiting for adoption in Bucks.

Adoption Ready can be accessed from www.buckscc.gov.uk/adoption

These comprised a record turnout of over 1,000 people at the Village War Memorial on Remembrance Sunday, a two‐day exhibition of local WWI history and memorabilia in the Village Hall, and a splendid complimentary village lunch for all visitors.

The annual Poppy Appeal was also a record, raising £5,115 in the house‐to‐house collection.

Branch finances were reported as being in good health and officers were re‐elected, together with three committee members. There is a branch membership of 26.

However looking ahead, fears were expressed about the viability of the Stewkley Branch due to declining membership and a shortage of committee members to run it. This is a general problem for the RBL nationwide, because of an ageing membership profile and difficulties in recruiting new members.

Steve suggested a number of options for the future of the branch in Stewkley, including amalgamation with another larger local branch or indeed the real threat of branch closure. A number of guiding principles were discussed against which to determine the way forward, with the retention of the Stewkley branch identity, such as on Remembrance Sunday, being a key aim.

It was agreed that the branch committee will formally evaluate

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY SAFE AS BRANCH FUTURE AT CROSSROADS

options with a view to bringing forward a proposal for the branch’s future at the 2020 AGM.

Remembrance Sunday is ALWAYS special This year, Remembrance Sunday on 10 November is not a ‘special’ year, nor even a ‘special’ anniversary.

It’s just another year with thousands of Her Majesty’s forces’ personnel overseas on operations, away from their families. It’s just another year when hundreds of ex‐service people will badly need the support of the Royal British Legion.

Please come along to the War Memorial at 10.45am and remember them all.

A farmer and his dog had a narrow escape at the end of September,

when the tractor they were working in was destroyed by fire (photo below).

Ben Hedges of Littlecote Farm had entered one of his fields when

the tractor cab quickly filled with smoke, and flames leapt from

under the engine hood. Ben escaped from the cab but his dog Fido,

a New Zealand huntaway, froze with fear, and Ben had to return to

the cab and carry Fido to safety. Local residents were alerted to the

incident when a tyre exploded with a loud bang that shook the

ground.

Two fire engines and crews from Aylesbury (photo below)

responded to an emergency call, which was in itself a fraught

experience, because the mobile phone signal in the immediate

vicinity kept cutting out. When the firefighters arrived, they used

one hose reel and two sets of breathing apparatus.

Ben and Fido were both shaken by the experience but were back

working the following morning. The cause of the fire is believed to

have been an engine spark fanned by gusty winds.

FARMER AND FIDO FLEE – TRACTOR TOTALLEDStewkley’s Mark Simmonds and daughter Emily were interviewed on ITV’s This Morning, hosted by Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield, in October. Mark is pictured in ‘The Green Room’ before going on the show.

Their appearance coincided with Mental Health Day; Mark is the author of the book Breakdown and Repair, about his own stress‐related breakdown, suffered when setting up a new company, and Emily’s anorexia. Both are now happy and healthy. The book launch was featured in the May Grapevine.

Mark is hosting A Talk And Discussion Around Mental Health at the Rec Pavilion on Thursday 7 November from 8pm. He will be joined by Emily and wife Mel, each with their own distinct perspective on mental health. Admission is £5 on entry (to be donated to charity). Four Stewkley businesses got together last month to put on a charity Christmas shopping event in support of Stewkley’s St Michael’s Church and the Puzzle Centre in Aylesbury. All four make their own products: Lucy Houle – oil‐cloth bags and accessories, Nikki Kent (Little Nix) – scented candles, diffusers and other products, Faye Lewington – porcelain ceramics, and artist Chloe Croft – prints and fabric from her own designs. All had stalls at the charity event, kindly hosted by Pippa and James Hutton. Also there were stalls by Jos Sheffield of Dunton, promoting her Christmas wreaths and other flower arrangements, and Anna Lucas, a local artist who designs and creates greeting cards and other stationery.

The event raised nearly £500 for St Michael’s Church and the Puzzle Centre. Thanks to Pippa and James and to all those locally who supported the event.

Former Stewkley resident Peter Sawyer, who died aged 83 in December 2016, was remembered at the Recreation Ground at the end of September with the presentation of a new bench. Michael Faulkner and Alan Hardings presided over events, attended by Peter’s family, including wife Doreen, daughter Amanda, and about 20 nephews and nieces, including niece Heather Blundell, who kindly sent photographs to the Grapevine. Peter’s other daughter Dorne was unable to be there as she lives abroad.

The proposed final location of the bench is where Doreen used to sit with Peter's dad Jacob to watch Peter play cricket year after year.

Heather said, “We would like to thank Julie Dawson for her help and support and also the Rec Committee for the drinks and cakes after the unveiling. My aunt [Doreen] also donated £100 to the Rec Committee, who gave it to the fund for children's play equipment.”

Peter was born in Dove Street, and he and Doreen moved from Stewkley to Newcastle some 20 years before he died. Peter played football and cricket for the village and was a Southern League referee.

Heather added, “We all loved my Uncle Peter. He was the most special of men, a huge tease mind, but such fun to be with.”

Pictured with the bench are (l‐r) Peter’s son‐in‐law Colin, niece Heather, daughter Amanda and wife Doreen with the most suitable floral tribute.

Stewkley Walkers welcomed Jackie Burke, founder of Leighton Buzzard Hedgehog Rehabilitation, at their social evening in mid‐October.

Around 30 members listened to Jackie speak about her work looking after hedgehogs and how to care for hedgehogs in the garden. She also brought along one of her many prickly friends, Honey, who was taken around the room to give everyone a close‐up view and take photos if they wished.

The group was very grateful to Jackie for her time and for putting up with chairman Neil Shefferd’s terrible jokes in his introduction; after learning that Jackie’s brother was a member of 1980’s pop group Kajagoogoo, he remarked that he hoped the hedgehog in attendance was not ‘Too Shy’ (for the uninitiated, that’s one of the group’s hits – Ed).

After Jackie’s talk, everyone enjoyed refreshments and, the staple of any Stewkley social gathering, a raffle.

A new singing club for all abilities is coming to Stewkley on Monday mornings at the Village Hall.

‘Songbirds’ is for those who want to sing for pleasure and health rather than for public performances or competitions, so there are no auditions. There is also no need to read music. The aim is to improve breathing, focus and well‐being by singing a range of melodies, some familiar, some new.

Doors open at 10am for hot drinks and a 10.30am start and an hour’s singing.

The first weekly session is on Monday 4 November, and the last one before Christmas is on 16 December.

There is a small fee of £2 per session, payable at the door. For more information, contact [email protected]

Hello friends, I’ve recently been flicking through some old family photos with my children of my great grandfather who fought in the First World War. He was a Royal Engineer and is seated on a camel alongside some Australian soldiers in front of the Sphinx. We are also lucky to have copies of his medals. In today’s, high definition, multi-coloured, internet and technological world, looking at black-and-white

photos can seem quite strange. Black and white can make the subjects of the picture seem like they are from some old history book, or from someone else’s memory from long ago – perhaps even making you question if it really ever happened. I have recently watched Peter Jackson’s film They shall not grow old. In the film he has restored and coloured old footage of soldiers in the First World War. Somehow those men have become once again real, not characters in a history book or a family story, but real men. It certainly is moving, wonderful even and yet sobering too. Whilst the colour and the natural movement makes us remember them as real people, we can also get some impression of the horror. Each November we have been remembering those men and those who have died after them in the many subsequent wars. As time goes by those names that are on our war memorials have perhaps become merely black and white photos and part of our family storybooks – no-one living remembers them as the vibrant, real, young people they were – and it is all too easy to forget the actual horror of war and death too. It is important then, every year, to bring to mind the reality of real people who sacrificed so much. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning, We will remember them With blessings, Donna

MESSAGE FROM THE TEAM RECTOR OF THE COTTESLOE TEAM

Dear friends A year ago we were commemorating the end of WWI, the war that was going 'to end all wars'. Seventy years ago we entered into yet more hell with the start of WWII. But that isn't the whole story of that twenty-year gap. 1919 saw more wars than we'd seen for ages – Russia in the middle of a civil war, war between Hungary and Rumania, Third Anglo-Afghan War, Turkish War of Independence, Irish War of Independence, plus at least three other European/middle eastern conflicts! 2019 is no better, with all sorts of horrendous wars going on on every continent. What is it with humanity and warfare? Some of it is about greed and control of resources, need for ethnic domination, hate/fear? Just occasionally a moral or ethical principle has a bearing on the situation. As someone once said, “If war is the answer it must have been a really stupid question!” All this of course is only one side of the story. There are really warm, loving, practically caring people around but they are so easily overlooked in all the noise and clamour. November 19 marks the feast of St Hilda of Whitby who lived in the seventh century. She called together the leaders of the northern (Celtic) and southern (Roman) Churches to try and settle the date of Easter for all the Church in England. It seems crazy to us today that this should be the cause of conflict but our clashes would probably seem equally mad to them. All I know is that Jesus did not believe in violence as the solution to any issue, and neither did any other religious leader worthy of the name. As we remember all victims of war, military and civilian, let us all pray and work for better solutions. God Bless, Revd Philip

The draft minutes for the meeting of the Local Area Forum at Wing in September were recently published; the following items are of interest to Stewkley:

• Road repairs along Mursley Road are being “considered” for capital funding in 2020/2021.

• There was a “robust discussion” about the effect of speed limit reductions without additional traffic calming measures, and the value of further legislation without educating drivers. The discussion included statistics from a 20mph pilot study (reduced from 30mph) in Askett near Princes Risborough that began in 2015 and has resulted in a 1.4 mph average speed reduction in one direction and no impact in the other. Thames Valley Police (TVP) shared the Bucks CC view that traffic calming measures would be more effective. There had been a

are getting quieter, the number of aircraft is increasing so that instead of, for example, people being extremely annoyed every now and again as now, they will become ‘just’ significantly annoyed regularly. That’s not an improvement.”

More information on Luton’s plans is available at https://futureluton.llal.org.uk/ or at Aylesbury Vale District Council offices on Gatehouse Road, or at a series of special events, the nearest to Stewkley being:

• Friday 1 November, Pitstone Memorial Hall, Vicarage Road, LU7 9EY 2pm – 8pm

• Thursday 14 November, AVDC offices, Gatehouse Road, HP19 8FF 4pm – 8pm

• Wednesday 4 December, Tring’s Nora Grace Hall, Faversham Close, HP23 5BA 2pm – 8pm, and

• Friday 6 December, Eaton Bray Village Hall, Church Lane, LU6 2DJ 4pm – 8pm.

Luton Airport is planning to almost double its passenger throughput from just over 16 million passengers per annum in 2018 to 32mppa by 2039. The current maximum allowed is 18mppa. The airport is asking for views during a consultation that closes on 16 December.

While there will be no new runway or changes to the current single runway, the plans include a second terminal and extensive new airfield infrastructure, a third station and extension for the Luton DART fast transit, plus on‐ and off‐site highway improvements.

How current or any new flightpaths might be used in the future does not, however, form part of this consultation, because all flightpaths for the whole of east and southeast England are being overhauled in a separate exercise, independent of Luton’s plans.

A spokesperson for local community action group PAIN (People against Aircraft Intrusive Noise) told the Grapevine that residents should anticipate a significant increase in aircraft noise, no matter how little or much they experience today: “While aircraft engines

• TVP reported that enforcement of anti‐social behaviour contracts had led to an eviction in the Stewkley area.

• TVP were expecting to receive additional officers in the Aylesbury Vale area as part of the Government’s promised increase of 20,000 officers. These officers would likely be used to respond to shift 999 calls across the area. Additional officers in Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire would also benefit the Great Brickhill, Ivinghoe and Wing Local Area.

The Commercial Hub of Stewkley

In the past, villagers’ shopping needs were met by premises such as Hedges’ grocery shop, which traded in the 17th‐century Grade II

listed thatched cottage on the left, now No 7 High Street North. The shutters hanging from the window sill secured the shop windows at

night. The small boy is maybe savouring how far his pennies might stretch on sweets from Mrs Hedges.

Further north, the substantial kerb‐side frontage of Bury Farmhouse can be seen. Once a prominent High Street farm, it made way for

the village telephone exchange.

Opposite the grocer’s, under the hanging sign, was an early 19th‐century pub, The Bull and Butcher. Known locally as The Bull, with its

coach entrance through to the rear, it served Benskins of Watford ales and stout. The Bull closed as a pub in 1963 and the building became

the village library and doctors’ surgery until 2006.

It is now a private home, No 6 High Street North.

In the distance can be seen yet another village pub, The King’s Head, and Hounslow’s shop

and smithy, but more on those another month.

Bird Watch

At the end of September, Elaine Stavert of Littlecote noticed her two resident collared doves spending time in and around a climbing rose. On further investigation, she discovered a nest and a chick (right). Early last month it became obvious that there were two chicks (header), that soon emerged to start flying lessons. The photo below shows them on the roof, dozing after their exertions. The whole process, from fluffy chick to fledgling, took only a few weeks. In fact collared dove chicks remain in the nest for only 15‐19 days and are independent of their

parents after about one week out of the nest. Eurasian collared doves first nested in Norfolk in 1955. Since then they have colonised all of the British Isles, and the RSPB currently puts

their numbers at almost one million pairs. Their success is in part due to their ability to produce several clutches of eggs each year, from February through to November.

The Devil Rides Out

This vicious‐looking creature (below) is not a scorpion, despite its scorpion‐like habit of curling up its tail when threatened. This is the devil’s coach horse beetle, the largest member (up to 28mm long) of the rove beetle family (staphylinidae). It is a voracious predator, crushing its prey with its pincer‐like jaws. It is common in gardens, hedgerows and other damp locations, which is presumably why this one had strayed into Flip Jackson’s bathroom in Sycamore Close. The female lays her eggs in the soil and the larvae over‐winter as pupae, emerging as adults in the spring. It is often mistaken for an earwig, but beware: in addition to the tail‐curling, it emits a foul‐smelling liquid from its abdomen, and its bite hurts!

Aaaargh! Arachnids!

Why are there so many spiders in the autumn? The answer is simple – it’s mating season. And the males are wandering about looking for females. There are around 650 species of spider in the UK, the majority being outdoor. Most UK species live for around one year.

Spiders reach full size in the autumn and their webs are therefore bigger and more noticeable. Males mature a couple of weeks before the females and set off in search of a mate. When a male finds a female he gives a little tug on her web which means ‘please don’t eat me’. Depending on whether or not she likes the look of him, and how hungry she is, she may invite him to enter her web. The pair then live together in the web until mating takes place, and sometimes they stay

together afterwards. The males die in the winter and the females lay their eggs in silk sacks in spring, which hatch after a month or so.

Arachniphobia is a very real and common phobia, but the truth is that spiders play a valuable role, keeping flies and other insects at bay. All spiders have

fangs but very few in the UK bite, and their bites are not dangerous. Spiders in baths or sinks can’t get out – give them a helping hand with a cup or glass.

Be Sure Before You Swat!

Last month’s Nature Watch item on ivy and the ivy bee had Flip Jackson intrigued and he set off, with camera, to observe a large bush on his garden wall. He spotted butterflies, bumble bees and hoverflies (below). The ivy bee remained elusive!

Hoverflies are important pollinators and a godsend to gardeners, aphids are a favourite food of their larvae. There are over 280 species in the UK and they come in a wide range of colours, many resembling bees or wasps. There are two key ways to tell the difference. Hoverflies have round eyes on the top of their heads and short antennae; bees and wasps have long antennae and eyes on the sides of their heads. The difference in antennae is probably the easiest to spot – check before swatting.

By Richard HeadyFrom Famine to Feast with Rainfall Last month we should have been busy planting next year’s crops,

but for the large part, ground conditions have been too wet. We

have managed to

plant some fields,

but far fewer than

we had planned. If

we can’t get them

growing soon we

will have to wait

until next spring

and will then need

to plant different

crop varieties,

more suited to spring conditions (greatly reducing the amount of

grain we can produce).

If you have noticed it being extra smelly around the countryside

over the last couple of months, it is because farmers spread a lot of

farmyard manure (cattle, pig and poultry muck) back onto the

fields in late summer/early autumn. This recycles some of the

nutrients removed by the previous crop, feeding the soil and

reducing the amount of manufactured fertiliser we need to use.

Every year we bring some of our grass fields back into crop

production, whilst planting some crop fields into grass. This has

many benefits such as: keeping the grass young and productive,

adding structure and roots to the soil and providing a break to help

reduce crop pests, weeds and diseases.

Muck and grass rotation are two great benefits of having cattle on

the farm, and why a mixed system can improve our farm

sustainability.

Over the past couple of months the lambs have been fattening well.

I tend to take them in small batches to the local abattoir (30‐minute

drive); they then come back to Pollards Butchers in Newton

Longville to be sold or packed into my mixed lamb boxes. These

days terms like ‘slaughtered’ and ‘butchered’ have been

commandeered by the

media and horror films

to describe

monstrosities, so I

hesitate to use them;

however, these are

actually highly skilled

jobs, done in an

extremely professional

and clean way. A week

on placement at a

butchers during my

university course made

me quickly realise what

skilled work it is. I

breathed a sigh of relief

when I left there with all my fingers!

A number of bus services around Aylesbury Vale are changing from 3 November. While no services through Stewkley are affected, a couple of nearby routes used by Stewkley residents are being revised. These are:

• Arriva 150: Milton Keynes – Aylesbury. The route in Leighton Buzzard will be standardised to operate via Bunkers Lane instead of Wing Road, with a new stop introduced at Leighton Buzzard Rail Station. There are daily timetable alterations with some additional journeys introduced.

• Arriva 280/X8: Aylesbury – Oxford. A revised timetable will be introduced with the off‐peak Monday to Saturday journeys that currently terminate at Haddenham and Thame Parkway Station extended via Church Way to Woodways.

All service changes will be publicised on the Bucks County Council website. Roadside and bus station timetables and electronic displays will also be updated.

CHANGES TO BUS SERVICES

Bucks County Council is asking residents for feedback on its draft ten‐year improvement plan for the rights‐of‐way network.

The new plan for Bucks’ footpaths, bridleways and byways sets out how the network can provide an amenity over the coming years that best meets the needs of people who live or work in the county, and those who visit.

The deadline for responses is 5pm on Tuesday 24 December, and the draft plan and survey can be found at buckscc.gov.uk/rowip

GRAPEVINE NEXT ISSUE 1 DECEMBER

DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS

15 NOVEMBER

Remember there is no Grapevine in January

[email protected]

After the joyous news last month that the Carpenters Arms had reopened, the Grapevine is downhearted to report that The Swan is losing its popular manager, June Tobin, and talented chef, Darren, at the end of October.

It is anticipated that, apart from a necessary closure from 4 November for approximately two weeks for toilet‐refurbishment, The Swan will remain open for a while under long‐term lessee Jim Woolley, although Jim has handed in his notice to the pub’s owners and will leave as soon as a new tenant arrives, if indeed a new tenant is being sought.

Jim’s decision to resign the lease, and June’s consequent decision to leave, is complicated by the recent announcement that The Swan’s freeholders, Ei (formerly Enterprise Inns) is being taken over by the Stonegate Pub Company, backed by private equity. The £3 billion deal is due to complete early next year, subject to approval from the competition watchdog and investors.

Ei, known as the UK’s biggest pub company, has over 4,000 pubs, whereas Stonegate has just 765, including the Slug & Lettuce and Walkabout chains. Ei is shifting its estate away from the ‘beer‐tie’ model, where publicans rent a site and buy beer solely from a landlord in return for lower rent, and now manages a number of sites itself, which is Stonegate’s model.

Stonegate was founded in 2010 with the purchase of 333 pubs and has grown through acquisitions. Its parent TDR Capital’s portfolio also includes We Buy Any Car, David Lloyd Leisure and Pizza Express.

Speaking exclusively to the Grapevine, June said, “The pub business isn’t what it was. It used to be that you couldn’t buy beer and wine in supermarkets. Now, you’re more likely to go to friends’ homes for a glass than come to a pub. The Swan could be a great destination eatery; I’d love to see a conservatory on the back and an enlarged kitchen. I’d love to come back!”

FAREWELL TO FISHCAKES AND PROFITEROLES

TAILPIECE TALEKINGSBRIDGE AND BUCHANAN SITTING PRETTY

There was a time, not too long ago, when the Kingsbridge picnic

site down Cublington Road was a cesspit of unwanted visitors,

the footpath along the supposed brook was unkempt and

impassable, and the Buchanan Spinney was inaccessible, dark

and forbidding.

So it was with sheer delight in early October that the Grapevine’s

roving reporter revelled around the recently mowed picnic site,

ambled along the wide, welcoming path by the visible brook,

chatted to the sheep and cattle behind sturdy well-maintained

fences, and happened easily upon the entrance to the Buchanan

Spinney, where a Chinese water deer took fright and legged it

through the trees to a safer haven.

What has changed the fortunes of this rural idyll? Maintenance

has switched from Bucks County Council to the owners of

Kingsbridge Farm, the Taylor family. They were thanked for their

excellent stewardship by the Parish Council Chairman, Cllr Keith

Higgins, at the Airport Monument Spinney that also benefits from

their participation during the annual October tidy-up (see above).

GLUTEN‐FREE FOOD MIGHT LOSE PRESCRIPTION STATUS from Bucks CC The Buckinghamshire Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) is reviewing guidance for GPs about prescribing gluten‐free foods and is asking the public for its views.

The CCG is looking to bring the prescribing of food items for people with Coeliac disease more in line with other patients that require a special diet. The NHS does not provide food on prescription for all patients that require a specialist diet, including those with food intolerances (lactose, wheat) and food allergies (egg, fish, shellfish, peanut, sesame, soya and tree nut). Therefore it is looking to stop prescribing gluten‐free foods.

The consultation is open until 10 December and is available at letstalkhealthbucks.nhs.uk

The plane was scrubbed (photo below), setts weeded, hedges trimmed, paths raked, leaves composted, larger branches burned, and litter picked (two bagsful). There was even time for the 18 volunteers to munch on bacon butties, brownies, cookies and flap‐jacks. Such is the attraction of the annual tidy‐up of the Airport Monument Spinney at the corner of Dunton and Cublington Roads.

Parish Council Chairman Keith Higgins thanked everyone for coming and highlighted the improvement in the Spinney’s fortunes since the community took over its maintenance from Bucks County Council about five years ago.
