Solemnity of the Epiphany - Cycle C – 06.01.19.

Entrance Antiphon:

Behold, the Lord, the Mighty One, has come; and kingship is in his grasp, and power and dominion.

Psalm Response:

All nations shall fall prostrate before you, O Lord.

Gospel Acclamation: Alleluia, Alleluia!

We saw his star as it rose and have come to do the Lord homage.

Alleluia!

Memorial Acclamation: Save us, Saviour of the world, for by your Cross

and Resurrection you have set us free.

Communion Antiphon: We have seen his star in the East,

and have come with gifts to adore the Lord.

The Christmas Season is longer than one day and includes a

number of wonderful feasts and solemnities. One such solemnity is the Epiphany of the Lord. The day on which we remember the arrival of the kings at the stable. The three kings who represent us, all the nations of the world. They

brought with them gifts, I like to think there were many gifts, but the principle ones, the ones worthy of note were: gold,

frankincense and myrrh. Each gift had a particular significance. A significance that we are reminded of in the

carol ‘We three kings’.

The child who is the greatest gift imaginable, God himself, is presented with gifts by representatives of the whole human

race. The child of Bethlehem is presented with gifts that speak of who is was, and what his future would hold. We come

before the child in the manger with the gift of ourselves. We present to him our very selves, all that we are, have been, and will be. We come before him, humbly, and present all that we

are to the infant-servant king.

In the words of Christina Rossetti:

What can I give Him, poor as I am? If I were a shepherd, I would bring a lamb; If I were a Wise Man, I would do my part; Yet what I can I give Him: give my heart.

A Happy Epiphany to you all!

Chalking the Door – An Epiphany Blessing

At all Masses this weekend we recall the visit of the three wise men of the East to the stable in Bethlehem bring gifts of immense significance as to the identity of the babe that lay in the manger. The East is a deeply spiritual and mystical part of the world, even today. And today we take simple chalk, bless it and mark our homes to seek the Christ child’s blessing for the year ahead.

“Chalking the door” is a way to celebrate and literally mark the occasion of the Epiphany and God’s blessing of our lives and home. With time the chalk will fade. As it does we let the meaning of the symbols written sink into the depths of our heart and be manifest in our words and actions the Latin words, Christus mansionem benedictat, “May Christ bless this house.”

Instructions:

Using the blessed chalk mark the lintel of your front door (or front porch step) as follows:

20 + C + M + B + 19 while saying:

The three Wise Men, Caspar, Melchior, and Balthazar followed the star of God’s Son who became human two thousand and nineteen years ago. May Christ bless our home and remain with us throughout the New Year. Amen.

Once this has been done offer the following prayer:

Visit, O blessed Lord, this home with the gladness of your presence. Bless all who live or visit here with the gift of your love; and grant that we may manifest your love to each other and to all whose lives we touch. May we grow in grace and in the knowledge and love of you; guide, comfort, and strengthen us in peace, O Jesus Christ, now and forever. Amen

Candlemas is coming order your candle now!

February 2nd marks the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord in the Temple, Christ the

light of the world comes into the Temple to be consecrated to his Father in heaven.

The feast is traditionally known as ‘Candlemas’, a day in particular where churches

bless the candles they will use throughout the year.

After last year’s successful celebration and the desire of the faithful to take a blessed

candle home, we are once again taking orders for the Candlemas Candle (pictured).

Simply pop your name on the list and give the payment to your community

representative. The candle will be ordered, reserved for you and blessed at our

Candlemas celebration at the 10.00am Mass in St. Mary’s and can be either collected

at the end of the Mass, or sent to your community for collection. The candle measures

7/8" x 12" and carries an image of Our Lady carrying the light in her hands.

Orders will need to be received by Sunday 20th January 2019 to ensure arrival in time

for the Feast.

Cost £2.50
