Parish Stewardship

ST. AUGUSTINE SPOTLIGHT - APRIL 15 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

In the Gospel from today Jesus appears to his disciples, but they are doubtful and frightened. He knows that they think that he might be a ghost and not the real Jesus. So he tells them to give him some food, since ghosts can’t eat (ghosts can’t participate in the physical world). To us in this day and age, this is almost comical. However, there is an important lesson here in human nature. We need visible signs and proofs of reality. We claim to be believers in Jesus, as the Son of God, as God himself. We profess him to be our King, our Lord, and our Savior. Could we “eat some food” as proof of our real faith, or are we spiritual ghosts who can’t handle spiritual reality in our physical lives? Of course, we are not talking about eating food. But with eating being the metaphor for something real and tangible, can we pass the test? What is real and visible of our faith in our lives? Is it limited to what goes on inside the walls of the church on Sunday? Does it manifest itself in the way we treat others including our family, the way we drive, the way that we conduct our business or work, or conduct our studies? Does it manifest itself in how we manage the gifts we have been given by God – our abilities and talents and the monetary rewards that come from them? Don’t be a ghost – be real! As chair of the Service Committee, I am making a plea for hospital communion ministers. We take communion to patients at Shands Hospital on Sunday or Monday, usually once a month. Many of our ministers are students who are either graduating or leaving for the summer, so we are expecting a shortage this summer. This is a challenging, yet extremely rewarding experience bringing the Body of our Lord to our brothers and sisters in the hospital. Training will be provided as a Eucharistic Minister as well serving in the hospital. You can shadow someone to check it out. Please contact me ([email protected]) or Collen Booker, who runs the ministry, ([email protected]) for more information or to sign on. Paul A. Gulig Chair, Service Committee and Parish Council

Composer’s Corner 3rd Sunday of Easter (Year B) – April 15th, 2018

The psalm I composed for this Sunday is routed firmly in a bright, major key in order to reflect the joy associated with the Easter Season. A balanced, peaceful melody is supported with a diatonic accompaniment in order to convey said joy. Aside from composing psalms, I am currently working on composing hymns for use in the liturgy. The one poem that I am setting presently was written by Gerard Manley Hopkins (1844 – 1889) and is entitled: “Thee, God, I come from, to thee go”. The first three stanzas are as follows:

Thee, God, I come from, to thee go, All day long I like fountain flow From thy hand out, swayed about Mote-like in thy mighty glow. What I know of thee I bless, As acknowledging thy stress On my being and as seeing Something of thy holiness. Once I turned from thee and hid, Bound on what thou hadst forbid; Sow the wind I would; I sinned: I repent of what I did.

As always, thank you for your interest! Yours respectfully, Zachary Landress

Important Parking Update

There is no parking behind the church in spaces identified by Charles Perry Company (CPPI) with “no parking” signs. Any cars parked on those spaces will be towed by CPPI. Spaces on NW 1st Ave. behind our office building near the City sidewalk need to be kept clear of cars so various con-tractors can have access to do their work.
