PSYCHOKINETIC TIME

What you are about to learn is perhaps the most pbenomenalimpromptu, dose-up presentation for altering time on a spectators borrowed watch. There have been a few attempts publisbedwhicb approacb tbe impact that this method bas, but none canactually touch it. Let me lJeo;cribe the effect as the spectator seesit...

A watch is borrowed (nothing is carried). Mer showing the watcharound to those nearby who notice the current time, you place thewatch race down in the spectator's left band. His band is closedover the watch. You never touch the watch again. You ask him toname a number then you concentrate on that number and thewatch. He opens his hand and turns over the watch and seesthat.i.the bands of tbe watch have moved thai many minutes! Nogimmicked watches, no switches, DO magnets, no false handling.Nothing but the spectator's watch and your mental abilities as ananywhere, any time entertainer.

I am not trying 10 PUl down other methods on the market but)am quoting from every magician and mentaIist that I have shownthis to who told me that this bas any method beat that they havebought, Gerry McCambridge told me that be wished that he badmet me before be bought Richard Bloch's "Perfect Time" wbich isa beautiful, expensive, gimmicked watch. Rev Bergeron's "Predicting TIme" is another good effect on the market but everyoneagrees that my method bas it beat by miles. This effect is so goodthat it fools even knowledgeable magicians...and it can berepeated.

I have had many performers beg me not to pul this out because ilis so good and it can be performed anywhere, any time. If you

have looked for the ultimate effect that can be pedormed withoutcarrying any props with you, then bere it is.

J[ you intend to perform this effect 10 its fullest impact that willsurely leave your spectators confounded, then I suggest that youread every line carefully. As with most mentalism, it is not somuch the method that makes this effect so strong, but thepsychology. I showed this to a young magician at the florida StateMagicians Couveution and he ran off to start performing itimmediately. Luckily I saw him the first lime thai he tried it. Itworked, of course, but he had left out the most importantingredients, the psychOlogical convincers. I sat down with himagain and tried to explain why everything he said was soimportant.

So I beg of you, practice the method of course, bUI please performthis the way it is supposed to be performed, J[ I see anyone outtbere perform this effect in a sloppy, haphazard manner, then Idoubt that I will ever pUI anotber effect this strong on the marketagain. It is too good 10 be thrown away in an incompetentpertormaaee, I have built a reputation performing this effect,

You may ask that if this is so good, then why am I putting it out?Simply put, I have shown this to a few magicians aud mentalistsover the last couple ofyears. I have pedormed it for 12 years now.II is so good that I know that it will make the circles and becomea classic, the ultimate impromptu method for allering the time ona spectator's watch. If it is going 10 be performed, then I want tobe credited for its origin and I want il done right.

THE HISTORY

Back in the 1970's Uri Geller made a name for himself byappearing to bend metal objects with his mind, and starnag, stopping, and moving the time on watches. Geller's downfull washis claim to be genuine. James ''The Amazing" Randi wrote

2

PSYCHOIQNETlC TIME

numerous articles and books exposing Geller as a fraud It wasafter reading one such book that I put together a method forvisibly bending the tine of a furk.. Shortly thereafter, I was movingthe hands of a watch; however, in Randi's drive to expose Geller,he showed a method of how to do this on nationwide television.During my subsequent performances, the comment I most oftenheard was "I didn't see you do it, but I know that you pulled outthe stem and secretly moved the hands with some son ofsleight ofhand. I saw Rand; do that on TV."

I eventually decided that I would have to find a way to convincethe spectators that I did not pull out the stem. What better waythan to ask them to name a number after it was in their hands andto have the watch move that many minutes? I tried il out and, sure enough, it convinced them. I mean could I have foreseenwhat number that they were going 10 choose?

You may be thinking at this point "Is the choice a mathematicalone?" No, it is not, The choice usually goes something like this"Think of a number from 60 to 120." That is it, nothing more andnothing less.

So read on.

PSYCHOKINETIC TIME

This effect needs to be broken down into two parts. 1) Themoving of the watch hands, and 2) the force of the number. Thepsychology behind both is equally important if it is to beperformed convincingly and correctly. Pay close allention to themisdirection. It took many years to perfect the proper misdirection so thai this effect could be repeated fur even the mostdetermined skeptic.

MOVING THE HANDS:

Look around the room and note what type of walebes people arewearing. Avoid Rolexes. This effect can be performed with onebut it is quite difficult; bowever, we will cover this phase of thework later. This effect cannot be performed with digital watcbes. When someone asks you to use a digital watch, just explain thatyou cannot use tbem as they may break,

rr you are unable 10 note the watch a person is wearing, lben askthem what kind of waleb they are wearing. If tbey say "a Roles'then ask another person until you find the ODt that you wanL Asyon receive the walCh, state thai you will use their watch becauseyou cannot afford 10 buy a new Rolex. This usually gets a laugh.

I usoa1ly gel the watch I want without going 10 this trouble.Usually I use a ladies small faced watch or a man's TImex or Seikoor Gucci or...weIl, you get the idea, almost any walch will do. Aladies small faoed walch is preferred because I can use this 10 gainmisdirection as I pullout the stem. I look at the walch handed tome and say "Hmmm, I don't know.." As I pull out the stem I stareat someone else's wrist and ask them what kind of watch tbey arewearing. All eyes go to where I am looking as tbey answer. Watcheveryone's eyes but don't look suspicious as you do this.

I tben state that this watch may he too small or that tltis watch basno minute marks or.cdo you get the idea? Any excuse will do justto help get the beal off dnring the pulling out of the stem. As youperform this effect, you will find il is unDl'ffS,",ry to get thismisdirection as the move to pnll out the stem is undetectable, buttltis is what I was talking about earlier, follow all the psychologica1convincers given as it helps to make the effect appear that muchmore impossible. By asking this simple question, the effect bas noteven started, and yet you are halfway finisbed.

PSYCHOKINETIC nME

Pulling out the stem:

Take the watell banded to you as in Figure I, left hand bolds thewalcb with the rigbt thumb on top of the face of the watcb andthe index, middle and ring finger UDder tbe watch. The left bandas sbown in Figure I does nothing but add cover and support thewatch.

Figure I

Use your right middle finger 10 pull OUI the stem, not your indexfinger (as in previous walch moving routines) and nol your ringfingerc.use your middle finger (Figure 2).

Your thumb will cover the fact that the stem is out. If youperform this routine often enough as I do, then you sbould trimyour fingernails with the middle fingernail left slightly longer.Leave il jusl slightly long enougb 10 pull out the stem of thewatch. You will find that tbe misdirection above will give youcover wben you come across a watcb wbose stem is hard to pullouL

Figure 2

Checking out the play on the watch:

It is a good idea to check o ut the watcb tbat you are using to seebow easy the watch bands move and wbethcr or not tbey even domove before you proceed with tbe effect.

How do you do this?

Easy. After you have pulled out the stem and finisbed thesentence about "w hat kind of watch do you bave? Keep it on fornow though, I may use it if th is watcb does not work. Thjs watcb isquite small, but I will try it." As I say "...this watch is quitesmaIL." I look back at the watch face to see if the watch bandsmove as I use my middle finger to move the watcb bands ever soslightly (Figurc 3). Just a small rolling motion will do it, leavingthe watcb bands wherc they were before the motion. This way Iknow if I will have to use a lot of pressure wben it comes time tomove the hands.

6

PSYCHOKINETIC TlME

Figure 3

Also, some watches like Swatches or watches with alarms have twopositions to whicb the stems pull out, one for the alarm andfurther still for the moving of tbe watcb bands. If you do not pullthe stem out all the way. tben tbe bands will not move and theeffect will be lost. After performing this effect with differentwatches, then you will be thankful that J indnded this small butsignificant piece of business.

If yon have followed my instructions SO far, then no one will havesuspected that yon polled out the stem and checked the movementof the watch bands. Now you are ready to display the TIME ontbe watcb.

Displaying the time:

After you bave checked the movement of the bands, then youreadjust your fingers and remove your left hand completely. From

7

Page 5: STEVESHAW'S PSYCHOKINETIC TIME - Emperybooks

PSYCHOKINETIC TlME

now on the rest of the moves are performed cleanly and openly,DOt that they have been anything different so far.

Readjust your fingers by pushing the watdl with your left hand sothat the bottom strap of the watch goes between your ring fingerand pinkie (your pinkie on top of the strap) and your index fingeris directly below the stem of the watch, your thumb still covers thestem (Figure 4).

Figure 4

This is a natural way to display the time on a watch and is notsuspicious in the teast, Whereas earlier you needed your otherhand for support as you pulled out the stem, the rest or the moveswiU take place with your one hand.

Show the watch to a rew people on your left and in (ront of you.Now you have to readjust your fingers again to display the watchto the people on your right. To do this, turn the watch around by

B

PSYCHOKINETIC llME

turning it towards yourself and to the r ight while at the same timemoving the thumb to the bottom of the' watch as your right indexfinger moves to the side of the watch to cover the fact that thestem i~ nut (Figure 5).

.. . - ."

Figure 5

9

Page 6: STEVESHAW'S PSYCHOKINETIC TIME - Emperybooks

PSYCHOKINETIC llME

Ask each and every person what time is displayed on the watchthat you are holding making sure that they announce the time onthis watell and not the time on their own watches. Correct themeven if they are two or three minutes off. If it saY" 2:Il and theysay 2:25, then point out their mistake to the next persoa. Do DOtdo it in a derogatory manner, do it in a factual manner. You areabout to perform a miracle. Now readjust your fingers back to theposition where they were when you started to display the watchwith the thumb above the stem and forefinger below the stem anddisplay the time to the people that you left out on your far left. You are now ready to change the time.

Changing the time:

Immediately after displaying the wateb, point the watch facetowards yourself and move your thumb down to the strap belowthe watch. You are DOW in position to cllange the time (Figure 6).

Ask either the person that gave you the watch or a person in frontof you " Are you righl or left banded?" As you ask them thisquestion, yon gesture with your band holding the watch. Just movethe watch slightly (about six inelles) towards them then bactagain. As your band comes back, use your index finger to changethe time of the watch.

The misdirection is perfect here. You have the cover of themovement and also you have directed their attention to thatperson again at the crucial moment when the sleight takes place.

As your band comes bact it should bring the watch slightly lowerthan before. Your right index finger will be below the stem andthe fact that it is out will be evident but never seen as you aregoing to immediately push it back in using the boldest move youwill probably ever perform in all your years of magic.

The two sounds are similar. After I have told them to waiclt lite stem, I ill1lllediately bring myleft hand back up to take hold of lite top part of lite watclt strapand pull the bottom part of lite strap through my right fingersuntil I am holding lite watch in a nice and clean display by tbeends of the straps (Figure 8). down and display your hand (Figure 9). Place the watcb in hisband, bave him close it and tum his .wnst ove r. If be doesunderstand, \ben move the watcb towards him face up.

Figure 9

So long as Ibe watch is moving at the right speed, then no one cansee the hands o f the watch, Practice Ibis.

The fact that the walCh is face up belps to create the feeling thatyou are DOt hiding anything. Tum the watch face down with asweeping motion as it is over his bands. Tum the watch towardsyourself as you tum it over.

Have the spectato r close his hand on the watch then tum his handface down. This precludes him from opening his band and lettingthe watch fall o ut. Immediately go into Ibe forcing of the time toget his mind off the watch.

., . . , . .'... ,-.. .." - .

FORCING TIm TIME:

The forcing of the time is quite simp le and it will work 90% of thetime or better. But if it does not work, then we have an "out" andtbe effect is taken out of the SUPER MIRAClE class and putinto the MIRAClE class aDd that's not bad. Instead of movingthe bands to a specific time, you move the watch at least a specificamount of time. Let us deal witb the SUPER MIRACLE effectfirst as this is bow it will go at least Dine OUI of ten times.

J( you are going to attempt 10 perform this effect, then it is goodto remember that walcbes work in 60 minute increments. Peopleare used to counting in lens and hundreds. Because of this factoraDd when the bands of the watch move bactwards (as they willusually wben perfurmed with this method) the amounl of time isquite confusing, therefor we have a liltle leeway to play with. Wehave about five to ten minutes where we can be off without itbeing pointed out,

Now our challenge is to get a person to select an amount of timethat is close to the changed time. I personally do DOt like methodsthat employ adding and subtracting numbers to arrive at a forcedtotal, The force sbould be free like the "pick a number from oneto ten" wbere most people select seven. This is bow the force heresbould work, and il does.

I have jusl moved the bands of my watch as in the effect. It wasoriginally 2:04 and now it states that it is 2:45. My watch movedahead instead of backwards but that is okay. It moved by 41minutes. I need to furce the number 41 or a Dumber close 10 It,How do I do it? Simple.

I ask Ibe person 10 I.bink of a number from 20 to 50. I do DOl givehim a chance to I.bink. I immedialely ask what his number is. Thespeaking goes like this "Think of a number between 20 and SO."(ever so slight of a pause) "What is it?" If I say the number 50with a little more force and emphasis, then nearly 99 times out of100 he will choose a number less than ten below the higher

14 15

Page 9: STEVESHAW'S PSYCHOKINETIC TIME - Emperybooks

PSYCHOKINETIC TIME

number...in this case in the ronies. Nine oul of len limes il will bethe force number. In this case il would more than likely not be theforce number as the Dumber is 41. More than likely il would be44, 45, 46, or 47. This is okay, too. If Ihey choose any of Ihesenumbers, then 1would state "1 am going to try to move the handsor the watch so that instead of being two minutes after, it wiU be44 (or whatever number thai they named) minutes after. 1 may notbe exact, but 1will be awfuUy close." When they look at the time, they wm see il at 2:43 and will still credit you with moving it therightamountorlim~

If they choose a number in the 30's likc 37, 38, 39, o r even in thelow 40's like 40, 41, 42, 43, then you are sm covered, just slate " Iam going to move the watch minutes. 1 may not be exactbut I will be awfuUy close."

If by chance they choose a number that is too low like 22 or so,then you sim ply ask them to choose a another number as thatnumber is too low and will not be a challenge to you as they will .soon see. This may seem weak on paper but it works and is neverquestioned. If the number is still too low, then state " I will try tomove the hands o f the watch that many minutes, maybe even moreif I can...but I won't promise anything though." And you proceedto do just that. It is still strong as you WIll find out.

The example I gave you is one of the worst possible and 1 wasgoing 10 change it to do a better number but 1 didn't as 1 wanted10 be fair. It is bad because 1) the watch moved forward , 2)because the hand did not move more than one hour, and 3) itmoved to an exact number on the watch. U suaUy when youperform this routine , instead of stating that you will move thewatch to a said time, yo u will state that you will move the bands acertain amount of lime. Yet even with all of these things wrongwith this example, you can still see how strong this e ffcct is. Youwin be amazed al how many times you bit the number exactly. Letme give you a few more examples. The following numbers wereforced on people during an actual routine.

16

PSYCHOKINETIC TIME

1 needed to force the number 33.

TIME: 5:21

STATEMENT: a number between 15 and 40

ANSWER: 30

METHOD: move that number of minutes

1needed 10 force the number 77

TIME: 9:55

STA1EMENT: a number berween 60 and 80

ANSWER: 79

METIlOD: move that many minutes, plus a minute to do it

1 needed to force tbe number 85

TIME: 8:43

STATEMENT: a number between 60 and 100

ANSWER: 92

METHOD: "I win move it backwards about that many minutes.Let's see,•.that wonld be around 8:41, 8:42." And go right into itwithout giving them a chance to think.

In this method the fact thai the watch moved backward isconfusing, compounded by the fact that the watch moved over 60minutes. In the unlikely event thai someone does point out that itdidn't move the right amount or minutes, then apologize for yoursubtraction error but point out that you did move it to where yousaid you would.

It is important that you immediately reset the watch after all have

17

Page 10: STEVESHAW'S PSYCHOKINETIC TIME - Emperybooks

PSYCHOKINETIC llME

glanced at it and seen that it bas moved the said amount ofminutes. This way they will not be able to count the amount ofmin utes that it bas moved as they reset the watch. When youperform it, you will think that these are small points, but do notoverlook them. As I said earlier, these are the psychologicalCODVIDCerS.

Sometimes the watch will move hade exactly one hour . In thiscase I WIll not ask for a number but I will tell the person that Iwill move hadr the watch exactly one hour. Often it will be a fewminutes off and I use this 10 good advantage by stating that I willmove it an hour back but not exactly so tbat they won't think thatthey misread the watch the first time.

Concentrating on the watch:

When concentrating on moving the watch, I bold one hand abovethe person's dosed hand and one below. The bands need to be faraway or else the person will think that you used a magnet which isillogical anyway as a magnet would freeze up the mechanism andstop the watch. Of all people to think thai I was using this methodwas a fellow magician who was also an engineer. If they suspect amagnet, then no matter what you tell them, they will DOt believeyou. It is important that after you pul the watch in the person'shand that you do not touch it again until after they have seen thatit bas moved and have acknowledged it, Then you can display itfor others to see.

Often the person holding the watch will say that they felt itmoving. This is either their own pulse or the mechanism in thewatch that they fuel I play this up and even suggest that they WIllfeel it move.

18

PSYCHOKINETIC liME

If you are surrounded:

This elICCI can be performed surrounded. I have been in thissituation many times. As you gesture and change the time of thewatch, point thc face of the watch to your body and slightlydownward. Continue as before only do not glance at the amountof lime it has changed Put the watch in their hand and Slate"Before I do anything let me sec if I can get it started,"Concentrate on it, then have them tum their hand face up andopen their hand, Take hold of the watch by the very ends of thestraps and quickly bring it dose to your face so only you can seethe face. If done quickly, it will be almost impossible for anyone tofocus their eyes in enough lime 10 sec that the hands have moved.State "good" as you place it back into their hand face down andbegin again by forcing the number.

The Rolex watch:

Is it possible 10 use the Rolex watch? Yes.

In this case you need 10 unscrew the stem and you either need 10

do this without being seen or you need a reason 10 do it. I useboth methods depending on the mood I am in and how easy theperson I am working with is distracted. To unscrew the watch stemundetected, you need to use the watch for other effects. I will giveyou a few at the end of these notes. If you do not want to performother effects and take the time to unscrew the stem without beingseen, then do the following.

Unscrew the stern in front of them slating that you want to set thewatch on the hour. Pretend 10 screw the watch back but don'tactually do it, Just twist your fingers around the stem pretending10 screw it bade in. Proceed 10 change the time as before aftershowing it around. Immediately change the time and look at theface with a gesture as you ask someone 10 thinIr of a numberbetween and . It should go as follows: "I want you 10

19

Page 11: STEVESHAW'S PSYCHOKINETIC TIME - Emperybooks

PSYCHOKlNETlC TIME

think of a number between (look at tile bee) hmmm (6gure it outapproximately) between and .. As you state "between.".....-_ and . Do you have it?" push the stem in with your indexfinger and screw it back in. It takes a little more effort and it isbest if you don't perform it with a large group of people. The ideaof setting the watch on the hour is good for any watch when tilestem is liard to pull out.

I hope that I have not frightened anyone away by taking this manypages to describe an effect that takes ooe minute to perform. Ihave tried to give all the correct input to make the effect amonumental success, This is real mentalism, a reputation makeras tlley say. You cannot perform anything stronger.

For the sake of completeness, here is the wording:

"Does anyone have a watch?"

"You do? Great! May I borrow it please? Don't worry, I won'thurt it."

"Hmmm, I don't know. What kind of watch are you wearing?"

"Leave your watch on for now. This one doesn't have the minutesmarked but I will try it."

"What time does it say?"

'The exact time, please."

"Are you rigllt or left handed?"

"You are right handed? Good, hold out your left band, palm up."

"See this pan of the watch? Make sure that I don't touch it."

"Close your hand and tum it bee down."

"Think of a number between and __."

"What is your number?"

"Good, I will try to move the hands of your watch __ minutes."

20

PSYCHOKINETIC TIME

"Can you feel anything happening? Tum your hand over and takea look. It has moved minutes."

After doing tile routine many times, you may find it unnecessaryto ask the serood person what kind of watch he is wearing. Just a"hmmm" and staring at his wrist will suffice in misdirection topull out the watch stem..

McCAMBRIDGE STAGE ROUTINE

I have used the watch routine on stage many times and it is quiteeffective; however, I used to shY away from using it on stage onlybecause ODe time in one hundred I might come across a watchthat is liard to use and I have to hunt for another watch. Close upit is fine; however, on stage, it was time consuming. GUlyMcCambridge solved this dilemma.

In 1989 at the Invocational, I met Gerry McCambridge, a nice, likable fellow witll an active mind. We have become quite goodfriends and we respect each other's way of thinking. I showed biromy watch routine and he was performing it on his plane ride homefor a fellow magician, A few months later, Roy Miller came outwith a publication of Gerry's routines. 10 it was a watch routineperformed on stage. In the actual routine it was performed with apicture duplication and the revelation of a name. With Gerry'spermission I will deal with the watch pan of the routine. I dosuggest that you buy the booklet titled " Men tal Montage" (seeaddress on tile last page.)

You stan by asking a spectator to think of a specific time in hislife and to secretly write it down on a piece of paper. Examplescould be the time he was born, or the time of his wedding, etc. Hefolds it up and retains iL You know what time it is via yourbvorite impression device. Gerry's "Omni Glance" is perfect here(see his referenced bookleL) You then ask to borrow his watch.Have the spectator concentrate 00 his time, as you try to "read his

21

PSYCHOKINETIC TIME

mind and set his walch 10 thai time." Leave Ihe stem pulled 001

and place the walch face down on his open palm. Ask him for hisslip of paper and read off the time he wrote, Have him verify il asthe time be wrote. Pick up the watch and have him veri£y that youindeed set the watch 10 the correct lime. Walk up 10 some peoplein the front row and have them veri£y il as the correct lime.

Come back 10 the perron on stage and show the time 10 themagain and then secretly change the time as you ask bim to boldoul his palm again. Explain thai you want 10 try 10 something alittle different, Push in the stem, Emphasize the time again as youput the watch into his hand. Concentrate and change the limementally. Ifyou see bow many minutes that it has moved, then youcan number force Ihis lime. This is impressive and the duplicationof Ihe time is perfect cover for gelling the walch stem into theopen position 10 PSYCHOKINETICALLY change it later.

As a side note, Bev Bergeron's "Predicting Time" would work wellhere also; however, in this case you would have to use twowatches, One watch would be the one the spectator uses 10 set tbetime while you set the time on the other watch, Only on yourwatch would you leave the stem out to perforrn the PSYCHOKINETIC pan of the routine later, I am not at liberty 10 disclosethe method of Bergeron's trick so this may be confusing 10 some. For sake of completeness, Ihe address where "Predicting Time" isavailable is included at the back of this book.

CONFUSING THE MATHEMATICIAN

He is 10 give you his IOtai. You immediately give himIhe two numbers. He will DOl be impressed as it is obvious thatyou know which two numbers come 10 whiclt IOtai. Yet youcontinue and make the following radical statement, "Db, I knowwhal you're lhinking. You are thinking that I have memorized anthe totats and I know what your numbers are because of this. IkDow it looks like thai bUI I can prove you wrong." You proceedto have him think of two more numbers and this time he is tosubtract one from the other, he is not to tell you the IOtaL Andyet you reveal il.

How?

Simple. The answer will always be six. You confuse his thinking byfirst having him add the two numbers. In this case the total isalways different depending what numbers he chose. It is easy workto figure out what numbers he chose. The second time hesubtracts inslead of adding and his number will always be six. Donot give the spectator time to sil and Iigure this one out, If youhesilate 100 long between effects, he will quickly Iigure it out,Proceed immediately with the next eflect.

TAP IT

The spectator is asked to think of any number on the watch face. You tell him lhat every time you tap the face of the watch withyoor pen, he is 10 add one 10 his number. When he reaches 20, heis to teu you 10 stop. State that yon are going 10 tap the watch inan anticlockwise direction and thai you are going 10 try and ligurewbere 10 stan tapping so that when he reacbes 20 you will be onhis number.
