Steven Miller,

Principal Designer

Designer Steven Miller founded Steven Miller Design Studio (SMDS) in 1999. SMDS and SMDS Hospitality provide consultation and interior design services for both residential and hospitality design projects. Miller and SMDS are known for sophisticated and stylish residences, hotels, restaurants and products; most of all though, he is known for the sense of fun and whimsy that enlivens all his work.

Miller’s passion and talent for design were apparent even in early childhood. At the age of ten, he undertook his first project on a modest budget of $500. Word spread fast through his suburban Chicago neighborhood and by the time he was in middle school Miller was a sought-after consultant on matters ranging from furniture and art arrangement to renovation and reorganization. As a teenager, Miller was hired to design the windows of a local home furnishings and accessories boutique on the recommendation of his high school art department. A designer was born.

Of course, good instincts can only take you so far. After high school, Miller moved to the West Coast, enrolling at the California College of Arts (CCA) from which he earned a degree in Interior Architecture and pursued additional studies in Art History, Industrial Design, and Furniture Design. Miller began his professional career in the office of distinguished designer Gary Hutton, whom he met while still in college. Upon graduation, Miller joined Hutton’s firm full-time, working closely with him on high-profile projects, in addition to helping launch what was to become a successful national furniture line. Collaborating with leading brands, architects, furniture manufacturers, SMDS consistently turns out eclectic, original designs and environments that are, by turns traditional, modern, elegant, or simply outrageous. Miller is also the Founder and Creative Director of a highly lauded gallery of Applied Arts called the NWBLK.

“We all know intuitively that life is better when we live, work, or play in a beautiful space,” says Miller. “Designers get to make that happen. It’s a privilege and a challenge—and for me, a joy.”

Miller and his partner split time between San Francisco and Yountville, Ca. Their homes, constantly evolving, act as a laboratory of ideas… often to counteract the anti-décor antics of their two pugs.

expertise in thoughtful execution, and his talent in coordinating uncommon elements. His spaces are recognized for their artful

composition; even when they flirt with irony or the unexpected, everything is in its place. Miller’s design is sophisticated and

smart, and often reflects his broad knowledge of art history, architecture, and his love of the angles and forms found in pure

geometry. There is also a deeply human side to his work: his spaces are comfortable, approachable, and vivacious and can be

quite witty, which is exactly how many would describe the man behind the design.

Our services include design consultation

for hospitality, dining and entertainment,

office, and multiple-unit residential

projects. Special attention is paid to

matching the design scheme and “feel”

of the project with client needs, as well

as the highlights and challenges brought

on by a particular space. SMDS consults

on project stages from new construction

to renovation to cosmetic changes.
