Steve Janas is a writer-filmmaker based in New Jersey, with more than 20 years experience producing

content for Film, Television and the Web. The Co-Owner of Reel Stuff Entertainment, Steve has produced

more than 1,500 projects since 2005, including an original web series for The Discovery Channel and original

content for clients like The Travel Channel, HGTV, Aol and the actor James Franco’s Rabbit Bandini

Productions. Steve is also a former publicist and an award-winning print journalist. As a screenwriter, he is

represented by Woolf & Lapin.

Production

Filmmaker & Photographer SmartShoot – 2005-Present

Shot and edited more than 1,400 projects for SmartShoot, one of the largest filmmaker networks on the Web. Steve is among their longest-serving and best-reviewed filmmakers, having produced such content as small-business videos for clients like Yelp, YP.Com, Zillow, Groupon, Zagat and many others.

Producer Lawyers.com – 2012-2013

Directed and managed the video production for Lawyers.com, the nation’s leading search engine for the

legal industry. Duties involved establishing and managing a nationwide network of filmmakers, planning and

assigning shoots in consultation with clients, editing videos and delivering them to Lawyers.com.

Documentary: Mitzi Rabbit Bandini Productions - 2014

Edited documentary about the actor James Franco and his grandmother Mitzi, based on interviews James

conducted with her. The project involved taking James’ interviews and creating a consistent narrative arc

working independently in the editing room.

Short Film: The Tolltaker Reel Stuff Entertainment - 2012

Produced, wrote and directed the award-winning short film The Tolltaker, based on a feature-length

screenplay Steve wrote previously that was a semi-finalist in the prestigious Nicholl Fellowship Screenwriting

Competition.

TV Series: Europe After Dark Reel Stuff Entertainment - 2010

Conceived, produced, wrote, shot and edited eight-episode travel-lifestyle TV series about nightlife in

Europe, hosted by Sean “Hollywood” Hamilton, afternoon-drive DJ at New York City’s WKTU-FM with almost

six million weekly listeners. Project involved travel to Europe to shoot in locations such as Ibiza and

Amsterdam, and exclusive interviews with major EDM artists like Swedish House Mafia and David Guetta.

Web Series: Living Tomorrow The Discovery Channel - 2007

Pitched, produced, wrote, shot and edited 15-episode hosted web series about short-term future technology

called Living Tomorrow. Project involved traveling to and shooting in Living Tomorrow demonstration houses

in Brussels and Amsterdam.

TV Series: The Red Carpet Showtime Networks – 2002-2003

Wrote, shot and edited the half-hour hosted TV series The Red Carpet for Showtime Next. The series involved

creating packages around interviews with celebrities on the red carpet at various Hollywood events.

Feature Documentary: Better Living Through Circuitry Cleopatra Films – 1999

Steve has four separate credits on Better Living Through Circuitry, a feature-length music documentary

about the rave scene in America that was the opening-night selection of the 1999 Los Angeles Independent

Film Festival. The film was picked up for nationwide theatrical distribution through 7th Arts Releasing and has

been shown at film festivals and on TV networks around the world, including Channel 4 in the United

Kingdom and Showtime in the United States. Credits include Associate Producer, Production Coordinator,

Shooter and Editor.

Writing

Screenplay: The Long Home Rabbit Bandini Productions - 2015

Co-wrote adaptation of William Gay’s novel The Long Home, winner of the 1999 James Michener Memorial

Award for fiction, with Vince Jolivette, co-writer of Child of God and James Franco’s partner in Rabbit

Bandini Productions. Film production to begin in May of 2015, starring and directed by James Franco.

Screenplay: Nothing Rabbit Bandini Productions - 2014

Pitched and wrote the feature-length screenplay Nothing, a true-crime account of the murder of teenager

Jason Sweeney by his friends in Philadelphia in 2003. Project involved conducting extensive interviews with

survivors and witnesses to the case.

Screenplay: Blackmoth Rabbit Bandini Productions - 2014

Pitched and wrote the feature-length screenplay Blackmoth, a psychological horror story that won the 2014

Creative World Awards and secured representation through Woolf & Lapin, who attached the established

director John Poliquin to it. It has been read by established production companies that include Blumhouse

Productions, Lakeshore Entertainment and Vertigo Productions.

Screenplay: The Tolltaker 2005

Wrote The Tolltaker, a feature-length screenplay about a young boy coming of age in the aftermath of the

Vietnam War in the early 1970’s. The screenplay was named a semi-finalist in the prestigious Nicholl

Fellowship Screenwriting Competition, held each year by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences.

Time Off Magazine – Assistant Editor 1995-1997

Researched and wrote articles for publication in an arts and entertainment supplement to the Princeton

Packet and a chain of other newspapers in central New Jersey. Duties also included generating and

assigning stories, editing the work of other writers and lay-out of the magazine.

The Princeton Packet – Newspaper Reporter 1994-1995

Researched and wrote articles and features as a staff reporter for the Princeton Packet. Beat included

Princeton, New Jersey and surrounding areas.

Westwood One Radio Networks – Publicist 1993-1994

Wrote press releases and distributed them to an established network of press contacts for the Westwood

One Radio Network in Culver City, California.
