STEVE HARPERSteve Harper is a graduate of the Royal College of Art, London, in Automotive Design. I am also a qualified Automotive Engineer and have 30 years experience of working for the vast majority of automotive manufacturers.I have experience of working in many parts of the world including throughout Europe, plus, Sweden, US, Thailand, Brazil, Indonesia and China. I am also the Owner and Founder of SHADO, an Internationally renowned Design Consultancy.

SHADO is the acronym of the Company’s name ”Steve Harper Art & Design Organisation”.

I have been described as a ”Futurist Visionary”, and I have been responsible for many exciting new concepts, as well as creating the practical solutions to achieve those concepts.

I was one of the first European Designers to work in China, as far back as in 1988, in Tianjin & Beijing, and more recently I have supported Design projects in Wuhan, Changchun & Shanghai.

Working on‐site with major OEM Clients, as well as at Suppliers and Satellite Design Facilities, my responsibilities included the supervision of the Design Modelling phases, plus Technical liaison, overseeing and implementing an Innovative Design for Manufacture philosophy.

I am well respected throughout the Automotive Industry as one of the few Design personnel who combine the high levels of skills capable of Design, Brand Development and Technical Project Management, with a broad knowledge of Engineering Feasibility, Quality & Manufacturing Engineering.

In addition, I can speak German, Dutch & French, together with a basic understanding of Swedish & Thai, and I am currently learning Mandarin Chinese.

Continued to work for BL until 1984, then moved to VOLVO Holland in 1985. Returned to UK in 1987, and worked throughout the World with MGA until 1992. Built my own first car in 1991, 1993 formed my own Consultancy SHADO, working in Brasil, Indonesia, Thailand & UK, before moving to VOLVO Sweden in 2000, as a Chief Designer, until late 2008.

With a considerable amount of time working in the Motor Industry, I have worked with a Global Client base in all areas of Transport & Product Design, bringing the lessons learnt of Strategic Research, Innovative Advanced Design, Lean Methodologies, Tight Project & Cost Controls, Design Quality systems, and Brand Development Product Planning, to many new & existing Companies

I believe that Good Design should be Inspiring, Innovative, Exciting & Fun.

Products are bought today with the heart and the mind, and so Good Design should also appeal and satisfy all of your senses.

It is also important that the atmosphere in which a new Product is developed, has the same energy and creativity, as you would want the prospective Customer to experience with their new purchase.

A HISTORY OF GOOD DESIGN

Over the years I have been commissioned to create various Design Projects in a wide span of Industries. From Cars, Vans, Trucks & Buses, all the way up to multi‐million Dollar Flight Training Simulators. All of the designs have maintained a strong design philosophy of being Original, Practical and Beautiful, whatever their role.

Good Design is a challenge, a blend of Creative Inspiration, Practical Solutions, Strong Leadership and an eye for Cost and Detail.

It is also about listening and interpretation. So when working with a new Client, even on a type of project which I have never worked on before, I take extra time to listen. As I bring experience from many other projects & disciplines, I can often help the Client look at their own product with ‘fresh eyes’. Ultimately this can create new unique solutions which allows for greater improvements for their business.

I believe that all Design is for People, their needs, their aspirations and should provide solutions which can enrich their lives.

STEVE HARPERVOLVO CARS DESIGN STUDIO – GÖTEBORG, SWEDEN (2000 – 2008)One of my most notable assignments was as the Platform Chief Designer for all of the Current & Niche Vehicles within VOLVO PVS Design, where my responsibility was to ensure the ’Red Thread’ of consistent VOLVO Holistic & Strategic Design Language was maintained, throughout all of the Projects under my guidance, to create a Harmony of VOLVO Brand Design.

My ’portfolio’ of projects over those 8.5 years, included all Model Year changes, for both Exterior & Interior design, on the Current range of VOLVO Cars Products, plus, developments of new Niche products, and the Design responsibility for all of the Accessory products on those programs.

I managed all aspects from Concept through Design & Development, Production Execution, the Quality Processes and as a Business Project Team member (establishing Project Cost, Planning, Content, Balancing & Timing) for the Projects listed here and on the next page.

Furthermore, those Project responsibilities for VOLVO also included the Press Launches, Sales Network Presentations, Sales Promotion and Motor Show presentations of the cars.

I have known and worked with Steve Harper for 20 years since 1986 when Steve worked for MGA as a Senior Designer with Peter Horbury and Ron Saunders. As Director Product Development for Leyland DAF Vans at that time I engaged Steve and the team at MGA to develop facelift designs for the existing range of vans and design proposals for the new van range (which became the Renault Master).Whilst Steve was at MGA we worked together on a number of other projects for both Leyland DAF and independently in overseas market notably China and Indonesia.In forming my own independent company CAD Ltd in 1994 Steve joined as an independent consultant and was responsible for all of the companies appearance design work.
