SteraMist® Binary Ionization Technology®

The EPA registered 7.8% Hydrogen Peroxide BIT™ Solution converts to iHP™ after passing through an atmospheric cold plasma arc.

iHP™ contains a high concentration of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) composed primarily of Hydroxyl Radicals.

ROS damage pathogenic organisms through oxidation of proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids.

This leads to cellular disruptions and/or dysfunction and allows for disinfection/decontamination in the targeted areas and large spaces.

The iHP™ Process (ionized Hydrogen Peroxide)

The ionized Hydrogen Peroxide (iHP™) ProcessThe atmospheric cold plasma arc converts the H

2 molecules into a

Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), mainly hydroxyl radicals (•OH). These are the most powerful oxidizing agents in nature; the iHP™ kills the pathogens and leaves only oxygen and humidity in treated spaces.

(2017). Cold plasma-activated hydrogen peroxide aerosol inactivates Escherichia coli O157:H7, Salmonella Typhimurium, and Listeria innocua and maintains quality of grape tomato, spinach and cantaloupe. International Journal of Food Microbiology, 249, 53–60.

Mermaid Lane, Wyndmoor, PA 19038, USA c Center for Nanotechnology and Nanotoxicology, Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, MA 02115, USA

It is estimated that about 37.2 million people suffer from foodborne illnesses and about 2,612 people die due to foodborne disease each year.

H2O2 was applied as a cold plasma-activated aerosol to reduce populations of E. coli O157:H7, S. Typhimurium and L. innocua on tomato, spinach and cantaloupe rind. Our results revealed that populations of E. coli O157:H7, S. Typhimurium and L. innocua inoculated on the smooth skin surface and stem scar area of tomato, spinach and cantaloupe could be significantly reduced by a 45 second aerosolized H2O2 treatment.

Similar to the results on Salmonella, L. innocua cells on the smooth surface of tomato and spinach were easier to inactivate by the aerosolized H2O2, achieving approximately 6.0 and 4.0 log CFU/piece, respectively.

It has been demonstrated that washing fresh produce with chlorine or other sanitizers has limited effectiveness in reducing pathogenic bacteria, as most treatments only achieve at the most 2 log reductions of pathogens associated with fresh produce ... The results from this current study suggest that the H2O2 aerosolization technology may be used as an alternative to washes with common sanitizers.

CHICKEN AND EGGS

These studies determined that BIT™ and SteraMist® provide a promising alternative for the disinfection of either table (eating), hatching eggs, eggshells (intended for human consumption) and chicken breasts. The technology may also be a good resource for disinfecting containment facilities with the benefits of reduced risks to humans and with no residual chemicals. The studies demonstrated that the eggs and chicken breasts inoculated with Salmonella had a reduction in numbers after treatment with SteraMist®. These results were both meaningful and statistically significant.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT

SteraMist® has been successfully tested on a variety of fruits and vegetables, starting with seeds, through to post-harvest. One stage of testing to seeds was performed at the point in the process before agricultural seeds were packaged to send to farms. This is a critical time to test to ensure there are no viruses, bacteria and mold present. During these tests, the seeds were deliberately inoculated with common pathogens to determine if there is any negative impact on viability of the seeds. Initial indicators point to positive outcomes and further testing continues.

Additionally, the application of SteraMist® was tested in commonly used storage bins for fruit and specific vegetables. The results of initial testing demonstrated significant reduction of the common pathogens that affect fruit and vegetables. SteraMist® treatment did not adversely affect mature fruits and vegetables and also proved effective in killing harmful mold.
