    Steps to be followed during Gayatri Japa

    1.

    Avoid Talking to others

    2.

    Avoid thinking other topics

    3.

    Doing Japa simultaneously hearing songs/pravachana4.

    While doing japa signaling/ indicating to others through eye or other parts

    of your body

    5.

    Morning Sandhyavandana Japa to be done poorvabhimukha standing (if

    done prior to Suryodaya). After Suryodaya you can do it sitting or

    standing.

    6.

    Japa during Madhyahnika or Sayam Sandhyavandana to be done sitting

    only.

    7.

    During Japa period, ensure that there is no gap between the fingers .

    8. During Japa, our hands to be closed with some clothes.

    9. During Gayatri Japa, there shall be five breaks -

    tatsaviturvarENyaM |

    bhargO dEvasya dhImahi |

    dhiyO yO na: prachOdayaat |

    10.

    There are three types of japas - Vachika, upaamshuka, maanasika

    Vachika Telling in loud voice

    Upamshuka - Telling with lips moment but not loudly

    Manasika - Doing the dhyana with chintana of the words

    Of these, Manasika japa is the best, upamshuka is better but Vaachika is

    not preferable.

    11.

    Gayatri Mantra japa to be done in maalaakaara. It shall start from the

    lower granthi of anaamika anguli (ring finger), little finger (3 granthees -

    lower, middle and upper granthi), upper granthi of anamika finger, upper

    granthi of middle finger, In the index finger (4 granthees - upper granthi,

    next, next, lower granthi). Madhyamaangulis lower and middle granthi

    need not be counted. As such, counting of ten japaas is as follows :

    i.

    Lower granthi of anaamika anguli (ring finger)

    ii.

    Lower granthi of little finger

    iii.

    Middle granthi of little finger

    iv.

    Upper granthi of little finger

    v.

    Upper granthi of anaamika anguli

    vi. Upper granthi of middle finger

    vii. Upper granthi of index finger

    viii.

    Second granthi of index finger (second from top)

    ix.

    Third granthi of index finger (third from top)

    x.

    Lower granthi of index finger.

    12.

    During Morning Sandhyavandana We shall hold our hands near our

    naabhi pradesha; During Madhyahna SandhyavandanaWe shall hold our

    hands near our Vakshasthala; During Saayam Sandhyavandana - we shall

    hold our hands near our nasikaagra (nose).

    13.

    No of japaas We must do the Gayatri Japa - Yathaashakthi

    a) atleast 1000 times; - Bestb) Hundred times or - Better

    c) least Minimum ten - Good

    Narayanastakshara shall be followed by thrice the number of Gayatri Japa.

    i.e., If you do 10 Gayatri Japa, you have to chant Om namO Narayanaaya

    Om30 times (i.e., thrice the number of Gayatri Japa).

    14.

    Some people have the habit of holding our Janiwara on hand while doingGayathri Japa. But I have not found any reference for this.
