Logging gathers down-hole
information for identifying target
zone characteristics through the
use of specialized tools.
These tools transmit data to our
surface computer, which records
information about the formation,
porosity, permeability and the
presence of hydrocarbons.

Wireline - Perforating
7
The perforating gun fires
explosive charges to
penetrate the casing into
the producing zone.
This creates a short path
between the oil or natural
gas that enables oil, water
& gas to flow into the
casing.

Radioactive Materials used by NCPS during the
exploration and recovery of gas and oil
At NCPS we primarily use two types of ionizing radiation,
namely, Gamma and Neutron. These types of radiation,
depending on the isotope and process of use, will have a source
capsule of radioactive material which will be contained within
devices such as nuclear density gauges or well logging source
pressure vessels.
These devices, which contain radioactive material, are a vital
part of both the stimulation and cementing process as well as
cased hole well logging.
10
Well Logging Source Capsules
and Pressure Vessels
In general during the process of well logging, both a Gamma and
Neutron emitting source will be used.
Source types and activity ranges
• Cs-137: 1Ci – 2Ci
• Am-241Be: 350mCi – 20Ci
• Co-60: 250mCi
• I-131: <50mCi
• Source capsules are double encapsulated, I-131 is a liquid
Sealed source pressure vessels are made of stainless steel and
are sometimes filled with radiation limiting materials depending
on the characteristics of the isotope.
11
Well Logging Sources: Securement for Transport
12
• Transport shield must be physically
attached to a structural member of the
vehicle or transport unit
• Must have two forms of independent
tangible barriers against theft or loss
Well Logging Pressure Vessel Handling Stick
13
• Used for both Gamma and Neutron
sources
• Used to keep a reasonable distance
between the source and employee
• Must be checked for damage or defects
before use
• Stick design varies depending on
pressure vessel
• Used to load source into downhole
logging tool
