Dear Stephenson Learning Community,
Thursday, February 16th is our Connect to Kindergarten event for current and new
families who will have an incoming K child enrolling at Stephenson. I appreciate everyone
who is sharing this information with neighbors and community. If families are not able to
make the event we will have registration packets in the main office. Thank you to Karla and
Jaelene for organizing the refreshment table and tour guides. Thank you to Cari, Cesar and
Troll for taking the time and sharing important school information with our new families.
Thank you to PTA and SCCA for supporting child care for students older than 4 years old
from 6:00pm-7:30pm.
Next week is filled with other activities including “Aloha” Spirit Day and Polynesian Dance
Troupe Assembly starting at 1:15pm in the cafeteria. Join us in the fun and show your
school spirit as we begin the excitement and support for the upcoming Stephenson Auction.
Each student and staff member will be given a floral lei to wear and keep on Wednesday,
February 15th.
Included in today’s FNN is important information from Mr. Seavey, Miss Pawol and Mr.
Rocha as well as PTA, and Foundation. Please take the time to read the information and
reach out to any of them if you have any further questions.
Wednesday, February 15th is Immunization Exclusion Day. This means if your child does
not have the required updated immunizations to attend school they will be sent home until
the proper paper work is submitted. Stephenson is doing an excellent job. We are down to
six students and all families have been notified. Please call Kelly or Susan for further
information. Nurse Mary is in the building on Tuesdays from 8:00am-3:30pm.
Respectfully,
Carlos
Counselor’s Corner… I can’t believe it’s already February! I hope everyone is having a good start to
2017. In school counseling we have focused our lessons on social and
emotional learning. Our K-2 students are just finishing up the Strong Start
program and 3-5 students are about halfway through Strong Kids.
Strong Kids and Strong Start programs teach students the following:
K-2
Understanding your feelings
What to do when you’re worried
Friendship skills
Solving problems with other people
3-5
Understanding your feelings
Dealing with anger
Clear thinking
The power of positive thinking
As we head towards spring the school counseling program will focus on lessons about being college and
career ready. The roadmap starts in elementary school. We want students to be aware of careers, what college
is, self-understanding and personal success.
Have great weekend and let me know if I can be a support for your student or family.

Dear Stephenson Families, The TAG testing for our school will take place on Monday February 13th, Tuesday February 14th and Thursday February 16th. Please make every effort to have your child at school on these days. Our testing proctor is currently developing the schedule so we do not know exactly what time specific students or grade levels will be tested, thus it is important for your child to arrive on time
and to be present for the entire school day. Please remember to encourage you child to eat a big healthy breakfast and lunch on these days. We do know that testing will occur in the morning and afternoon.
All of the TAG testing will be paper and pencil this year. Testing can be stressful and some students may not react well to hearing that they will be taking a test. If your child appears stressed about the testing the TAG office suggest telling them that the school needs some students to help try out a few special puzzles and activities to help teachers better understand student problem solving strategies or that they will be taking part in an activity to help teachers see how much Stephenson students know about certain subjects. You know your child best, so please share as little or as much as you believe they need to know. Please remind them to relax and try their best!
The results may take 2-3 months to come back. You will be notified once we receive the results. Score reports are also mailed to the primary address listed for the student. When the results come back, if your child does not qualify for TAG identification, please tell them that we appreciate their participation in the process. Also, the fact that they were asked to participate tells us that they are incredibly bright students (regardless of the testing results). If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Best of luck!

Media News from Mr. Rocha
Hello Stephenson Families,
We continue to work on Coding.org and will visit the website from often. The K-1 students have started to
explore Teach Your Monster How to Read. This program is a game based learning program that helps with
reading fundamentals and literacy. To learn more about the program, visit
http://www.teachyourmonstertoread.com/. The 2nd to 3rd grade have been developing technical and word
processing skills through Google Classroom and Microsoft Word. The 1st round of Oregon Battle of the
Books for 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teams will end this week and Round 2 will begin next week. Stay tuned for
the schedule. The 4th and 5th grades started a virtual bookshelf program called Biblionasium (https://
www.biblionasium.com/#tab/content-winter). Students are able to create a log of their reading, review and
recommend books to other classmates. The program also has a parent component too. If you wish to
participate and recommend books for your child, email me at [email protected] and I will forward that
information to you. Students can continue to work on these technology programs at home, if you would like
information or your child’s logins, please feel free to contact me.

The next PTA meeting is Monday, February 13th at 7pm in the Stephenson library. Hope to see you there!
PTA directories are ready! They will be going home to PTA members on Monday. Check your child’s backpack and if you don’t get one, let us know.
Connect to Kindergarten is coming up next week on Thursday, February 16th from 6:15pm-7:30pm and PTA could use your help. We need baked treats plus a few people to help with setup & cleanup. Please email Karla Tovar [email protected] if you can help out. And let your friends and neighbors with incoming kindergartners know about the event. It’s a great way to get to know the school and meet the parents you’ll be hanging out with for the next 6 to 13 years!
The Stephenson Swag has been restocked (including the very popular ladies t-shirts and kid-sized hoodies). You can order them in the school office.
PTA President Job Shadow Needed: Our PTA president Cesar Villaca is serving the second year of his two-year term. We DO have term limits in PTA, so we need someone to take his place, and a great way to get up to speed would be to job shadow Cesar this year. This doesn't have to be one person - a tag-team of co-presidents is another option. Please come to the meeting on Tuesday or contact Cesar at [email protected] if you're interested in learning more.
