STEPHEN COVEY’SSEVEN HABITS OF HIGHLY
EFFECTIVE PEOPLE
By
P.K.Mathan Raj
IS IT HALF FULL OR HALF EMPTY?
A NEW LEVEL OF THINKING
Albert Einstein observed, "The significant problems we face
cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them”
Those are deep, fundamental problems that cannot be solved on the superficial level on which they were created.
WHAT IT IS?
Principle-Centered Character-based Inside-Out Approach For the effectiveness of personal and
interpersonal
INSIDE-OUT APPROACH
To start first with self – even more fundamentally
To start with the most inside part of self – with one’sParadigmsCharacterMotives
RESULT OF OUTSIDE-IN PARADIGM
Unhappy peopleWho feels
Victimized Immobilized
Who focus on weakness of Other people Circumstances
(which are responsible for their stagnant situation)
THE SEVEN HABITS – AN OVERVIEW “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then,
is not an act, but a habit.” -- Aristotle Our character, basically, is a composite of our
habits . Sow a thought, reap an action Sow an action, reap a habit Sow a habit, reap a character Sow a character, reap a destiny.
Change of habits is not a quick fix It involves a process and a tremendous
commitment. Eg: Rocket Launch.
HABITS - DEFINED
Habit – Something that you do often and almost without thinking
As per covey - The intersection of knowledge, skill, and desire HabitKnowledge – What to do, Why?Skill – How to do?Desire (Motivation)– Want to do.
All the above three is necessary in order to make something a habit
THE MATURITY CONTINUUM The Progressive movement from Dependence
to Interdependence.
Interdependence
Independence
Dependence
MATURITY CONTINUUM (CONT…)
Dependence is the paradigm of you you take care of me you come through for me you didn't come through I blame you for the results.
Independence is the paradigm of I I can do it I am responsible I am self-reliant I can choose.
MATURITY CONTINUUM (CONT…)
Interdependence is the paradigm of we we can do it we can cooperate we can combine our talents and abilities and
create something greater together. Three phases
Physically Emotionally Intellectually
MATURITY CONTINUUM (CONT…)
Interdependence is a choice only independent people can make.
Dependent people cannot choose to become interdependent.
They don't have the character to do it; they don't own enough of themselves.
HABITS CLASSIFICATION
Private Victories: Habits 1, 2 & 3 – Deals with Self mastery
It helps a person to move from dependence to independence
Public Victories: Habits 4, 5 & 6
It helps to move from independence to interdependence
Renewal: Habit 7 – Habit of renewal
Habit of continuous improvement
EFFECTIVENESS
Eg: Story of “Goose & the Golden Egg” Life that focuses on golden eggs and neglects the
goose, Result: No asset that produces golden eggs.
Only taking care of the goose with no aim toward the golden eggs Result: Won't have the wherewithal to feed yourself or
the goose.
EFFECTIVENESS (CONT…)
Effectiveness lies in the balance -- what Covey call the P/PC Balance TM.
P stands for production of desired results The golden eggs.
PC stands for production capability The ability or asset that produces the golden
eggs.
