WATERCOLOUR PAINT TUBES 1
I prefer to use tubes of liquid paint rather than dried palettes. I love how vibrant the colours appear
on the page and I find it much easier (and FUN!) to mix colours when used this way.
You don’t have to buy every single colour you see! As you’ll learn in this challenge, using a limited
palette (as I’ve listed below) is a great starting off point and will provide you with an endless amount
of colour options you can create on your own.
WINSOR & NEWTON COTMAN WATERCOLOUR - 8ML TUBES
HOLBEIN ARTISTS’ WATERCOLOUR – 5ML TUBES
These paints are the less expensive line from Winsor & Newton
and I think they’re excellent quality! They have beautiful vibrancy
similar to the professional line without the hefty price tag.
PERMANENT ROSE
LEMON YELLOW
CADMIUM ORANGE
COLOUR PALETTE
CADMIUM RED DARK
MAUVE
DIOXAZINE PURPLE
COBALT BLUE
PHTHALO BLUE
PHTHALO GREEN
If you have the budget and want to splurge these paints are (in my
opinion) the best! They have such rich and vibrant colours that don’t
fade once they dry as other brands can.
*Alternate colour names: winsor lemon, cobalt violet, winsor violet,
winsor green
WINSOR & NEWTON PROFESSIONAL WATERCOLOUR - 5ML TUBES
*Alternate colour names: Opera, Cadmium yellow Lemon, cadmium
yellow orange, pyrrole red, bright violet, permanent violet, Phthalo Blue
Red Shade, cadmium green deep

ROUND WATERCOLOUR BRUSHES 2

You can use any brand of watercolour brush you like, just make sure it’s a round brush & has a good
pointed tip. I only use round brushes when creating my florals. The shape of the brush is important in
order to create the curved petals of your flowers. The pointed tip is also a must for adding texture
and “drawing” little details in your painting.
Also make sure to look for short handle brushes. They’re much easier to control than longer handle
brushes and are better for detail work.
PRINCETON SNAP! ROUND WATERCOLOUR
BRUSHES (SHORT HANDLE) These are my favourite watercolour brushes! They have super
soft bristles and really pointed tips which are great for adding
those super fine details.
ESCODA PRADO ROUND BRUSHES
COTMAN SERIES 111 ROUND BRUSHES
BRUSH SIZES: 0, 6, 12, 20
GOOD QUALITY PAPER 3
This is so important! You’ll notice a huge difference in the quality of your painting simply by using a
higher quality paper. However, since the “good stuff” is more expensive I often use a different paper
for studies and tests and save my good paper for my final copies. No matter which paper you choose
to use make sure you look for at least 140lb weight, otherwise the paper will be too flimsy and will
take away from your beautiful work!
Watercolour paper is available in three different textured surfaces; hot-press (smooth surface), cold-
press (medium textured surface) and rough (bumpy textured surface). I only work with cold-press for
my florals since it provides just enough texture to absorb the water and has a lovely, soft feel.

FABRIANO COLD-PRESS
140LB PAPER PAD
(9” x 12”)
ARCHES COLD-PRESS
140LB PAPER PAD
(9” x 12”)
FLUID 100 COLD-PRESS
140LB PAPER PAD
(9” x 12”)
*
* Arches paper is available in pads, blocks and in large, single sheets. I recommend buying a
small pad when you’re first starting out as they are a less-expensive option for trying out the
paper. Blocks are different from paper pads because the edges of the paper are sealed, which
prevents your paper from warping once your painting has dried. You can separate the sheets
using a knife blade. The large single sheets are great if you want to spread out and create a
big painting. You can also cut the sheet down into smaller pieces however you like.

PLASTIC ROUND PALETTE
LARGE PLASTIC PALETTE
PLASTIC MIXING TRAY
I like this palette since it’s fairly large with a
lot of separate wells for mixing different
colours.
These round palettes are great for getting
started and are easy to find at any art supply
store.
These mixing trays are really handy if you
want to spread out and need a large area to
mix a bunch of colours.
TWO WATER CONTAINERS 5
I use a minimum of two water containers. One is for washing off my brushes while I’m painting and
switching colours, and the other I keep clean so it can be used for blotting away mistakes (you will
learn this trick during the challenge). Any cups you like will work fine, but I prefer to use mason jars.
They’re sturdy and clear so you can see the colour of your water and know when you need to change
it. It’s important to regularly change your water so your paint colours don’t become muddy looking
from mixing with dirty water.

PAPER TOWEL 6
This is a must for drying off your brush, wiping excess paint and for fixing mistakes.
