01 a city within
master of architecture studio c: gift to the city IVtutor: scott woodssemester I 2015
This studio thinks past the dominant ‘white-
wall’ art museum model to consider what art
museums can be. The museum typology is
challenged in three distinct phases of experi-
mental architectural gestures.
Phase A: Four galleries are designed to house
four specific artworks based on a quote by the
artist.
Phase B: Each gallery is housed within four ex-
isting art museums.
Phase C: A single research theme is investi-
gated through the design of a fictional site, in
which the four art museums come together.

The City Within explores the disjunction be-
tween architectural forms and programming
by proposing the regulated juxtaposition of
programs within typologically neutral archi-
tecture. A ‘meaningless’ architecture is devel-
oped through the deconstruction of museum
into smaller masses. Stripped of symbolism,
architectural style and materiality, these
masses are reconstructed according to a set
of predetermined rules to form a homogene-
ous array of assemblages. The imposition of
programs within these typologically neutral
assemblages suggests an inherent opposition
between program and architecture. Devoid of
any meaning and allusions to programming,
the architecture conceals a programmatic
madness.

02 dwell
self-directed2014
Dwell is a self-directed project that best re-
flects my own aesthetic ambition combining
my love for urban and street art.
A long and narrow inner-city South Yarra site
presented both challenges and opportunities.
The 6m north-facing street frontage was ad-
dressed with a setback to the first floor, allow-
ing light to culminate in the central courtyard.
Engagement and interaction with the street
is promoted with the provision of a large ter-
race visible from Oxford St, with aluminium
battens integral in giving the house a sense of
intimacy.
The architecture employs a language of sim-
ple geometry and contrasting materiality. Ex-
ternally, the facade is clad in timber battens.
This continues internally with the introduc-
tion of exposed brickwork and polished con-
crete flooring, creating depth and complexity
in the spaces.

03 palais de cine
masters of architecture studio d: screenismtutor: toby reeds
The architecture of Palais de Cine explores
filmic devices and visual cues that craft
scenes and manipulate perception. Inspired
by Op Art, illusory elements of anamorphism,
gestalt principles and forced perspectives
manifest within the cinema complex and are
materialised in novel forms of supergraphics.
The cinema addresses St Kilda’s Esplanade
frontage linke the adjacent Palais Theatre and
former Palais de Danse, paying homage to the
site’s entertainment history.
The supergraphic facade of Palais de Danse is
conceptualised as the opening title sequence
of a film. The double skin timber facade pays
homage to Saul Bass’ title sequence of Alfred
Hitchcok’s Psycho (1960) with its geometric
patterning and gestalt-insp[red typography.
Cascading in scale from behind the Palais The-
atre to the northern tip of the triangle site, the
cinema maintains key views from the Espla-
nade to the foreshore. The internal program of
cinemas, a media museum, mediatheque, of-
fices and a restaurant are articulated through
the form as interrelated but differentiated
programs. The landscape expresses a similar
language and materiality of the cinema, blur-
ring the distinction of landscape and building
with trafficable roofs and terraced seating.
