As we sit on the brink of a fast approaching New Year, we thank you for helping us do what we do. Your support will help hundreds of families in the next year in the fight for sobriety and stability in their homes. Since the last Homes for the Holidays, it has been an eventful year for the STEP2: we graduated the class of 2010, expanded our volunteer program, and waved goodbye to our smaller leased facilities while moving into the gorgeous Mathewson Family Counseling Center.

Now here we sit hosting our 19th Homes for the Holidays. It is important for us to recognize and thank the Homes for the Holidays Committee. This committee began its tireless work in February this year, spending countless hours working to put together a tour we hope you will thoroughly enjoy. We are further thankful and blessed to have your presence as you enjoy the beautiful homes on the tour this year. About Step2Now more than ever in our community’s history, there is a critical need for women’s services focused on recovery from chemical dependency. STEP2 is the only program in Northern Nevada that specializes in treating chemically dependent women and their families. Since 1988, STEP2 has been successfully helping over 2,300 impoverished women and children break the cycle of addiction in our community. The agency operates over half of the services in the entire state designed specifically for pregnant and parenting women, serving an average of 200 women and 250 children annually.

STEP2 is a family treatment facility like no other. This specialized program provides the framework for women to focus on their sobriety and work to get their family back. Eight-five percent of the women seeking treatment have children and most are single heads-of-households. Services provided include counseling, housing, childcare, family management, transportation, employment counseling, financial planning, and healthy living skills. This unique combination of support and training is designed to help families get back on their feet again and stay there.

One of the most needed and critical benefits that STEP2 facilitates comes in the form of the Lighthouse of the Sierra. The $3.6 million project was funded by Low-Income Housing Tax Credits and provides 25 transitional homes for mothers and their children. The Lighthouse of the Sierra, a community partnership to provide comprehensive, integrated services to strengthen families affected by substance abuse is a unique project in the State of Nevada, as it targets assistance to low-income families.

Another great benefit to our community and the STEP2 agency is the new Mathewson Family Counseling Center pictured below. Having opened this year, STEP2 continues to enhance its services, while increasing efficiency and providing a welcoming environment for women and their children in need.

Story of HopeMy name is Amanda and I am a recovering addict. Growing up, I had a very good childhood. My parents were always loving, caring, understanding and fair. They did everything in their power to make sure my brother and I were happy. Unfortunately somewhere I lost my way.

My addiction started at the age of 18. I was in a car accident and was prescribed pain killers for a broken collarbone. I didn’t I think I could become addicted to pills, but I did. I went from being a young adult with everything going for me, to a deceiving and numb sole. I was living in fear of my parents finding out I has an addict and afraid to face the truth. Years went by and I continued to use, leading me to associate with other users. Soon, I started using heroin. At age 22, I became pregnant and knew I needed help. I thought I could overcome addiction on my own, but soon I found myself unable to cope with everything around me and started using again. My drug addiction took control of my life once again and I was devastated.

I knew the drugs were going to kill me and my unborn child. Finally the day came when I hit rock bottom. I was living in motels, had no job and had no family to turn to due to my own alienation. That is when I picked up a phone and dialed for help.

I never understood why I was using until STEP2 came into my life. STEP2 has helped me realize and understand that addiction is a disease. The counselors and advocates opened my eyes to the reality of substance abuse. They provided me with the tools and education I needed while teaching me about healthy boundaries.

Today I can proudly say that I am one year clean and I look forward to my future with my beautiful, healthy daughter. I am back to work and am living at the STEP2 residential campus, where my daughter and I have a great support system. Because of your belief in STEP2, you are enabling women like me to change and become a supportive mother and member of society.

Rancharrah was once the exclusive enclave of casino magnate Bill Harrah. The 27,000-square-foot mansion and grounds have hosted the Kennedys, Rockefellers and Dwight D. Eisenhower. The private lake, golf course and world-class equestrian center sit in cottonwood-draped splendor in the shadow of the high peaks of the Sierra Nevada.

The Harrah House is the main mansion and its green-gabled roofs, copper turrets and 27,000-square feet of white-walled Kentucky horse estate stylings dominate the view from the 3-hole golf course and private lake. This five-bedroom home has grand sitting rooms, libraries, piano rooms and spiral staircases that empty out into a newly built garden and events area off the back deck.

Rebuilt by John Harrah using the original floor plan of the legendary Rancharrah mansion, the Harrah House retains the spirit of old-world hospitality and grandeur that made the original home host to celebrities and dignitaries. Today, Rancharrah offers wedding parties what it has offered celebrity visitors and wealthy business tycoons throughout its history — privacy, luxury and tranquility. Set on over 140 acres of open land in South Reno, the property retains the old-world charm of its industrial age heyday, but has been updated to the taste of discriminating guests with a detailed, period-specific remodel of the interior of the mansion with plans for a new garden area, amphitheater and kitchen facilities.

HouseResidence Touring this residence is like being inside a museum of traveling art. Once a 900 sq. ft. guest house owned by Sherry Harrah, this home was remodeled and expanded to 5,000 sq. ft and has been the residence of Napa Valley and Bay Area transplant, Jim House since 2007.

Walking onto the property, there are Steven Addi and Dale Evers sculptures throughout, some of which are custom commissioned, providing a balance of architecture in each landscape. Upon entry, there are Tanzanian female heads in Granite and Watusi African Tribe sculptures, welcoming friends to the property. Above the entertainment center in the media room is a headdress given by a South Pacific Princess while sailing to Papeete, Tahiti. Other unique artwork in the media room includes two replica African Elephant Tusks carved from wood that frame the backyard where the pool house, solar heated salt water pool and gazebo are situated. Decorated for the holidays, is a more than 1,000 lb Elk standing tall.

In addition to the African and eclectic collections of art throughout, there is a nautical theme that complements the travel collection. In the office, there is a collection of boat art, including paintings and the owner’s boats that a St. Lucia boat worker built. Other nautical art includes a replica of the Bluenose, called the Bluenose II boat, built in 1964 sitting in the hallway. The Bluenose II sails as a good will ambassador for the province of Nova Scotia and was an outstanding racing boat, excelling in racing once the fishing season came to an end.

Walking into the dining room, take notice of the Lazy Susan turntable made of Brazilian wood built by Woodworker, Lyn Disbrow as a remembrance of traveling the Blue Train in Africa. The design is of the peace symbol of the Afrikaans and is one of a kind. Other artwork includes a Marc Chagall print in the corner of the room and an Italian wooden cabinet that transforms into a bar when the top lifts.

Hanging in prominent locations of the house, including above the master suite bed, are paintings by local artist and co-founder of NadDada art show, Chad Sorg. An Oregon artist’s fun rendition of a Pablo Picasso can also be found as you walk into the Master Suite. Continuing to enjoy the collections of art, in the workout room there are paintings from Brazil, street art from Paris and original oil and acrylic paintings of the Cinque Terre coast on the Italian Riviera- a perfect setting while working out or enjoying the vast benefits of an infrared sauna.

Guests enjoying Reno are welcome to the Western themed guest room. This room décor consists of items from a ranch in Yosemite and a sacred Navaho Indian marriage headdress and hand-woven basket. Adding to the ambiance of the home, the wine cellar with case lot storage below is connected to the fireplace by granite and faux painting as one cohesive design by Susan Moore. Be sure to spend enough time in this home as you don’t want to miss this collection from some of the owner’s travels.

Fernhoff Residence400 Sylvan Circle, VerdiJim Fernhoff, Owner and Operator of Lakeside Specialized Transportation and Sue Fernhoff, Real Estate Agent with Keller William Group One Realty saw the beauty in this property in 1999, and turned their dream into a show stopping reality. Designed by local Architect, Al Salzano and furnished by Juniper Hill Furniture, the main house is 3,100 sq. ft. and includes a 1,200 sq. ft. guest house. Walking into the inviting home, take notice of the front door designed by local Truckee artist, JoAnne’s Stained Glass. The beams in the great room are wrapped in wood from the dismantling of the Trestle Bridge in the Salt Flats of Utah, where they laid the Golden Spike in the 1800’s. This Spike is where the East and West railroads met during the building of the Transcontinental Railroad.

When not in the backyard, the Fernhoff’s with their eight children and two grandchildren, spend most of their time in the great room, where they light the fireplace, get cozy and enjoy each other’s company at holidays and on Sunday nights. Christmas is a happy, joyous time where their large, extended family gathers and everyone has a stocking hung on the fireplace. Renowned blacksmith shop, Truckee Mountain Forge, designed the custom fireplace screens in the great room and kitchen. The fireplace with long stemmed roses is a romantic story which sprung from Jim and Sue’s early days together. Jim brought home a long stemmed red rose cast in metal and said it was like their love, which will last forever.

Other exceptional features of the home include Petit Point Chairs in the dining room, each with over 9,000 stitches that took over three years to make from England and an antique reproduction bar in the billiard room crafted from African mahogany, modeled after an original Victorian bar in Virginia City. Cabinetry is custom crafted by Truckee River Sash and lighting throughout is the Illuminati Collection by Minka Lavery.

Sue's favorite piece of furniture, a hand painted chest of the "Old Woman in the Shoe,” sits in the master suite. The painting depicts a woman with all of her children gathered around. Sue keeps all her cards sent to her over the years and all of her daughter’s special moments throughout life. Before you leave, don’t forget to peak into the backyard. Jim’s hobby of designing ponds started on a bar napkin and developed into a passion after 6 years of mastering and building. The backyard pond was Jim’s biggest endeavor, with more than 300 loads of rock from Lakeside Trucking tucks to add to the existing property. Winning “Yard of the Year, Washoe County” in 2008, the miraculous pond features a 14 foot waterfall with a swimming hole, Koi fish happily swimming, meandering streams and an island for relaxing. During the warm months, pet ducks Wilson and Spalding are found swimming along the rafts with the family along with other wildlife, along with Smokey the Bear visiting every winter. Another rem inisce of their love is a boat built by Jim for his wife as her wedding present, called “Miss Susie” hanging above the pond. Every anniversary, Jim and Sue take the boat out for a stroll around their pond to celebrate their union.

Christensen Residence 230 Hirsh Road, Verdi

Tucked away in the quaint community of Verdi, Nevada is a small enclave of homes nestled along the banks of the Truckee River. The setting of the Christensen home is locally recognized and fondly remembered as, at one time, being part of the original Lear Estate. When the property was purchased from the estate by the Christensen’s and two other families in 2002, it became a priority of everyone involved to preserve this pristine property.

John and Terry Christensen and their two son’s Eric and Earl, and most recently, Earl’s wife Sandra, share in the love of this home and its surroundings. The Christensen’s have hosted many special gatherings. “One of the most memorable would have to be Earl and Sandra’s wedding. We were surrounded by family and friends, plus, the very best nature had to offer. It was absolutely magical. The scenery was breathtaking, as were the bride and groom,” says Terry. Christmas is another special time for their family. Decorating the 14’ tree and spending time with loved ones has become a family tradition.

This Tudor style home was built in 2006 by Christensen Construction. The towering pines, abundant wildlife, majestic mountains and amazing Truckee River became the inspiration behind the design. Assisting John with the process and completing the final plans was Steve King of Graphic Designs. The residence is 4854 sq. ft. featuring 4 bedrooms and 4.5 baths of very comfortable living space nestled on 1.5 acres.

A few of the special features include Mortis and Tenon Beams at the gable ends, as well as the redwood beams in the family room that were reclaimed telegraph poles from the railroad. Additionally the large beam that support’s the custom railing leading down to the wine cellar, once supported the bridge over the Couldron Ditch, which still supplies water to flood irrigate the gorgeous meadow. Speaking of the wine cellar, amazingly the cellar stays 55-65 degrees without refrigeration; however, the wine seems to mysteriously disappear. John seems to think it’s an inside job.

The Christensen’s spend most of their time in the kitchen and family room enjoying the every-changing views of the river. The country western mix of décor is reminiscent of both John and Terry’s childhoods. It consists of items they have collected through the years, mostly coming from family and friends, with each piece having its own story and memory. Earl’s artwork and Eric’s photography and woodwork adorn the home and add to its character and charm.

Special thanks to Monica Bridgeman and Nicki of “GJ Rhodes for the Home” for planning and graciously giving of their time as well as furnishing some of the magnificent holiday décor. All of the fresh floral arrangements and many of the other special touches were lovingly created by very dear friend, Gerda Riedi.

As John so eloquently puts it, “Our home embraces nature and the beauty of the river, with views from every room to observe the movements of the wild birds, animals and the ever changing seasons.” Living in this beautiful setting has truly been a gift the Christensen’s love sharing.

Step2 AwardsSPIRIT OF THE LIGHTHOUSE AWARDThis award is given to a foundation, organization or individual that has supported STEP2 in promoting the agency throughout the community. The support of this entity has been significant in helping secure funding that enables STEP2 to continue serving women and children in our community who are in need.

The 2011 STEP2 Spirit of the Lighthouse Award is given to The Mathewson Family Foundation. This foundation has demonstrated strong and steadfast support for STEP2 and the community as a whole. Since STEP2 initiated its Capital Campaign in 2007, The Mathewson Family Foundation has supported STEP2 by providing major funding and encouragement to other foundations. Speaking on behalf of the foundation at the Grand Opening in October of 2011, Stacie Mathewson, an advocate for recovery, communicated the importance of programs like STEP2. Stacie and her family continue to be integral part of STEP2 and its mission.

It is an honor to recognize The Mathewson Family Foundation for this prestigious award. On behalf of the board of directors, staff, and STEP2 Families, we say THANK YOU for their dedication to breaking the cycle of addiction in our community. They have truly invested in making Northern Nevada a better place.

BEACON OF LIGHT AWARDThis award is given to a STEP2 employee who continues to help drive the vision and mission of the agency. It also recognizes the dramatic impact this individual has on the agency as a whole. Congratulations to Julie Enzinger who is the Employee of the Year and recipient of the Beacon of Light Award for 2011.

Julie Enzinger joined the STEP2 team in July 2010 as the agency’s Resource Coordinator. As a Master’s Level Social Worker, Julie’s responsibilities are numerous. She provides case management to any client with a history of trauma, coordinates all employment-related services, serves as STEP2’s on-site representative at the Renown Pregnancy Center, supervises academic interns, and serves as STEP2’s liaison to Family Drug Court. Her exceptional work ethic combined with her intelligence, attention to detail, and positive attitude have resulted in significantly improved services for the clients. She has become an essential member of the STEP2 team and is highly respected by her colleagues and community partner agencies.

FELLOWSHIP AWARDIn 2009, the STEP2 Fellowship Award was named after Sparks Christian Fellowship in dedication to their continued volunteer support for our organization. The Fellowship Award recognizes individuals or groups within our community who demonstrate volunteerism by a self-sacrificial giving of their time and talents in pursuit of our mission without expectation of reward.

We are truly honored to recognize Lara Solheim as the Fellowship Award recipient. Lara began volunteering with STEP2 over a year ago and hit the ground running immediately. In her time, she has helped organize donations and increased client accessibility to clothing and needed household items. Lara has done an exceptional job furthermore in securing donations throughout the community while strengthening partnerships for STEP2. In addition to volunteering with donation management, Lara has also rallied local businesses to support STEP2, securing raffle baskets and other donations for fundraising events to further support STEP2 services. Lara has shown selfless dedication to the families, making an incredible impression on all the lives she’s touched.
