CONNECTITTEACHERS’NOTES
STEP ONE: Learning the Moves
In the film, Anna takes you through eight choreographed steps which use a combination of body percussion, dance moves and vocal percussion. These moves and sounds link together to form the fabric of Connect It. Anna and the children in the video perform the moves in a mirror image so your students can copy exactly what they see on screen.
Begin by watching and learning the individual moves. As students become more familiar with each of these, you can begin to be more precise about the exact counting for each. The diagrams below show you how the moves fit with the beat of the music. The count is along the top, the moves and vocal sounds are beneath. It might be helpful for children to count out loud at first until the moves can be performed in time.
STEP TWO: Putting the Moves in Sequence
Once children are familiar with each move, and can perform them in time, they then need to learn to perform the full piece in sequence. The Connect It Movement Map can be used alongside the video to pull together the final performance.
STEP THREE: Create Your Final Performance
One you’ve learnt the moves and put them in sequence, you can perform alongside the clip of Connect It from the Ten Pieces film which features the youth percussion group Drum Works. There’s a version with Anna doing your part so that you don’t get lost!
STEP FOUR: Experiment!
Connect It is all about experimentation with sound and movement, and having fun.
Once your students can perform the whole routine confidently you could start to create your own new piece. You might want to take similar ideas like the names for the sections to build your own material. Why not film your creations and upload them on the Ten Pieces website bbc.co.uk/tenpieces?
