Community Volunteering

Page 6: STEP INTO SPORT COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING VOLUNTEER INDUCTION

Each year a number of young people from your school/college are selected to become Community Volunteers - young people who will volunteer in local clubs, community groups, or at events. These young people are invited to attend Step into Sport ‘Leadership Academies’ and from here will be supported to start volunteer placements in community clubs. The fact that you are reading this induction means that you have been selected and are about to start volunteering!...

Step into Sport – How does it work?

Page 7: STEP INTO SPORT COMMUNITY VOLUNTEERING VOLUNTEER INDUCTION

A Leadership Academy is a ‘leadership club’ designed to provide high quality, regular support, training and development for young people that are committed to actively volunteering to enable them to develop and grow as leaders and volunteers. In essence it is an out of school hours regular opportunity in which you can develop your leadership skills and be supported in a wide range of opportunities as active volunteers.

The Leadership Academy will:

• Provide you with information about volunteering opportunities and prepare you to undertake your volunteer placement.

• Provide opportunities for you to discuss and learn from your peers about your volunteering experiences.

• Signpost you to or provide you with the opportunity to attend qualifications and awards to support your volunteering.

• Celebrate and reward you for the contribution that you have made in your volunteer placement.

Code of Conduct for Coaches and Volunteers

Coaching must demonstrate at all levels a high degree of honesty, integrity and competence. The need for coaches to understand and act on their responsibilities is important to sport, as is the need to protect the key concept of participation for fun and enjoyment as well as achievement. This is implicit within good coaching practice. This code of conduct available via the following link defines all that is best in good coaching practice and provides clear guidance to take into your coaching / volunteering.

Code of Conduct

Child Protection• It is the responsibility of everyone to ensure that sport activities are safe and FUN!!! It is essential that

everybody from parents/carers to sports coaches and leaders are aware of good practice to ensure that a child’s safety is paramount in sport. In your volunteer placement it is highly likely that you will be working with young people in a sporting environment and therefore the leaflet available via the following link is designed to provide you with more information on good practice to help you to ensure that children can enjoy sport within a safe and secure environment. It is also hope that the information will enable you to feel more confident and comfortable when working with young people. Providing children with positive sporting experiences means that they will be more likely to achieve their true potential.
