Step down transformers reduce electrical voltage. Their secondary voltage is less than
the primary voltage. This type of transformer "steps down" the voltage applied to it. For
instance, a step down transformer is needed when an 110v product has to be used in a
country with a 220v supply. They are typically based on the principle of
electromagnetic induction between coils to convert voltage.
This transformer converts high-voltage, low-current power into low-voltage, high-current
power. The larger-gauge wire used in the secondary winding is necessary due to the
increase in current. The primary winding, which doesn’t have to conduct as much
current, may be made of smaller-gauge wire. Electrical isolation, power distribution,
and control and instrumentation applications are provided in these transformers.
Step down Transformer are designed from two or more coils of insulated wire wound
around a core made of iron. When voltage is applied to one coil, called the primary or
input, it magnetizes the iron core. This induces a voltage in the secondary or the output
coil. The ratio of turns of the two sets of windings determines the amount of voltage
transformation. For example, 100 turns on the primary and 50 turns on the secondary
would result in the ratio of 2 is to 1.These transformers can be considered as a voltage
ratio device.
A practical application of this 2 to 1 ratio would be a 480 to 240 voltage step down. If
the input is 440 volts then the output should be 220 volts. The ratio between input and
output voltage will remain constant. Transformers should not be operated at voltages
higher than the specified rating, but may be operated at lower voltages than rated.
Step down transformer are used in various areas. Some are:
Medical Equipment
Avionic & Ground Support Systems
Onboard Marine Applications
PCB Mountable Modules
To increase transformer efficiency and reduce heat, metal type of the windings plays
an important role. Copper windings are much more effective than aluminum and any
other winding metal choices. Transformers with copper windings cost more initially, but
save on electrical cost over time as the efficiency more than makes up for the initial
cost. Step-down transformers are mostly used to convert the 220 volt electricity seen in
most parts of the world to the 110 volts required by North American equipment.
