A Letter to the community From Superintendent Keith KellySTEM2M, Standards-Based Grading & Online Payments: Getting better on purpose

    Dear Mayeld Community,

What a great year itsbeen for Mayeld Schools.

As 2013 is behind us and we

are headed to the mid point

for the school year, we are excited

to share some of the great things

    happening in our classrooms and

    school district.

Every day, we are working to increase

    student achievement by exploring

    innovave programs, enhancing

    instruconal best pracces, and

    creang environments that maximize

    student independence by providing

the tools students need to be career

    and college ready.

When we see our students, we look

at the whole child, not just a test data

point. Please know that we have never

been more prepared and our teachershave never been more commied to

    creang tremendous opportunies

for all students to succeed. Taxpayers

should also know that we are

    accomplishing these goals while

sll maintaining a lean and ecient

    budget.

    Looking ahead to ensure connued

    excellence, Mayeld Schools have

    made some improvements that will

have a posive impact on student

    achievement and readiness.

    Here are some quick highlights:

    Next year, Mayeld Schools will

    begin its STEM2M program at

    Mayeld Middle School. STEM2M is

    an acronym for Science, Technology,

    Engineering, Math and Medicine.

STEM2M is a unique approach to

    teaching and learning that fosters

    creavity and innovaon while

    providing challenging, student-

centered inquiry based educaonalexperiences. STEM2M is a bold

    approach to educaon, based on

    the principle that academic rigor,

combined with a focus on the skills

    colleges and employers seek from

our graduates, that will prepare our

students for 21st century careers and

    college readiness.

Mayeld Schools have also made a

change to the way students and parents

    receive grades known as Standards-

    Based Grading (SBG). We recognize

that change is not always easy, but

somemes it is necessary to adopt new

    standards where the research shows

we can beer serve our students.

Mayeld is using SBG to raise student

    achievement by clearly communicang

students progress in a mely, accurate,

    STEM2M is a bold approach

    to education that will prepare

    our students for 21st century

    careers and college readiness.
