This post will be working 37 hours per week and is term time for, 39 weeks per year. The start date of this post will be 1st September 2018. The new Tonyrefail Community School is seeking to appoint excellent, self-motivated and self-disciplined colleagues who are compulsively driven to do the best they can. The post holder will be required to work within a team to ensure that resources, equipment and areas in Science, DT, ICT and Creative Arts are suitably maintained and fit for purpose, keeping agreed written records of all equipment and apparatus in each area. This role will specialise in supporting the DT team however. The post holder will also be responsible to the Head of Faculty for an agreed level of expenditure and maintain associate budget information, accurately and in accordance with the school’s financial regulations. ABOUT THE NEW TONYREFAIL COMMUNITY SCHOOL A massive £44 million education, leisure and community project is coming to Tonyrefail in September 2018 with the redevelopment of the existing comprehensive school site. The state-of-the-art school will offer a first class education facility for students aged between 3 and 19. It will include an impressive new three storey development, offering a unique learning facility to inspire and enhance the lives of our students and staff. The Super School project will include the total refurbishment of the original Grade II Listed building, demolition of the 1970s comprehensive school and the creation of a new primary school in its own secure area of the site. Contemporary Sixth Form facilities will include study areas and places to relax and enjoy a coffee with friends while overlooking one of the beautiful new courtyard areas. New steel and glass bridges offering a bright, modern environment will link the major development with the original 1930s school building. There will also be an outstanding selection of newly designed sports facilities at Tonyrefail Leisure Centre, including gym membership, 3G pitch and use of the adjacent swimming pool which is ideal for Post-16 students who have free periods between lectures. The incredible development is on course to be the largest of its kind in the region and will offer an outstanding facility for all. JOB DESCRIPTION

POST TITLE: STEM Technician – DT Specialist (Grade 6)

RESPONSIBLE TO: Head of Faculty and Estates Manager

DATE OF DESCRIPTION: May 2017

CONTRACTUAL TERMS: Term time only (39 weeks) 37 hours per week (78.63%)

OVERALL PURPOSE OF THE JOB Working under the general direction of the relevant Head of Faculty to and oversee support services necessary to meet the defined standards and qualities essential for a hygienic, healthy and safe DT environment. As required, support may be requested from the Science and IT teams along with the Head of Faculty in Creative Arts to support specific lessons and events within this area. To act as an integral part of the school support staff team, and as such to make a contribution to the overall aims of the school, working within agreed policies and procedures.

DUTIES / KEY TASKS (Relevant Duties will be allocated to relevant Roles)

To ensure resources, equipment and learning / prep areas in DT are suitably maintained and fit for purpose within agreed polices and guidance.

To be responsible to the Head of Faculty for an agreed level of expenditure and maintain associate budget information, accurately and in accordance with the school’s financial regulations.

To keep agreed written records (inventory) of all materials, apparatus and equipment related in each area, including responsibility for stock control and maintaining an audit of expendable materials.

To have responsibility for ensuring that sufficient supplies are always available to meet the needs of the Faculty by ordering appropriate equipment, materials and resources and maintaining a good system of storage, organisation and use which complies with current Health & Safety requirements.

To undertake or arrange yearly maintenance/servicing/inspection schedules as appropriate.

To process, input and extract data held on the school’s database systems, maintain both manual and computerised record and filing systems in line with requirements and ensure safe storage of official documentation

To liaise with the radiation monitoring/fume cupboard testing agency

To liaise with the PAT testing contractor

To advise the Head of Faculty and Estates Manager of any actionable outcomes for all the above

To monitor and manage the maintenance and repair of apparatus and specialist equipment, repairing apparatus and equipment where possible and where necessary arranging for repair and servicing work to be carried out by an ‘external’ contractor approved by the Estates Manger and/or School Business Manager

To produce & maintain Health & Safety protocols within DT to include but not limited to risk assessments, COSHH assessments and accident records

To ensure that all materials and equipment are used in a safe, environmentally friendly and proper manner, following all guidelines and specifications carefully, and dealing with any breakdowns in equipment, promptly. Have special regard to energy conservation COSHH, CLEAPSS and the School’s Health & Safety Policies and advise staff and pupils as necessary

To have responsibility, with all DT Staff, for the maintenance of a safe and healthy working environment in the technology areas. Keep up‐to‐date with these responsibilities through CPD.

Respond to the repair and problem log as required.

Under direction provide support to teachers and students in the use of equipment.

Work with the finance team to ensure equipment register up-to-date and accurate;

To dispose of any equipment in line with agreed procedures e.g. to have it signed off by the Network Manager or Estates Manager.

To comply with all policies and procedures as specified by the School and RCT

Any other duties seemed reasonable/necessary and in line with job description.

Monitor and arrange stock and supplies, cataloguing as required.

Assist with the supervision of students out of lesson times e.g. clubs, extra-curricular activities, exam invigilation as required and support for exams using ICT

To provide technical advice on health and safety matters for the Science and DT Teams and, when necessary, to other departments

To manage safety checks and risk assessments within the Science and Technology areas and ensure that all identified health and safety issues are dealt with as quickly and effectively as possible.

To be responsible for the safe treatment and disposal of used materials, including hazardous substances, and carry out risk assessments.

To prepare, manufacture as appropriate and deliver resources to Science Laboratories, Technology and Creative Arts Rooms in a timely way in line with teachers’ requests to ensure effective support.

To be responsible for coordination, use and development of practical resources, prep rooms, storage areas, worksheets, stationery and utilities needed to meet the practical requirements of the Science and Technology curriculum covering all year groups.

To maintain a positive learning environment within the DT Faculty by ensuring that workshops and classrooms are cleared of equipment after use, and oversee systems to ensure that the corridor is kept clear of equipment and apparatus.

Wear protective clothing provided at all times whilst working with materials, equipment or apparatus.

To monitor working conditions and recommend changes as necessary.

Working under the direction of the teacher(s), contribute to teaching sessions, by demonstrating or advising on the proper use of equipment and materials. This will involve providing support to individual pupils, including assisting with the completion of practical project work.

To develop a general understanding of and respect for the learning needs and preferences of pupils and use this knowledge constructively when supporting them individually or when working with groups.

To provide cover in urgent social or welfare situations in respect of individual pupils and assist with maintaining the well‐being of pupils in an emergency during laboratory activities, during the normal school day.

To assist in escorting students on educational visits and to participate in extra- curricular activities as required

To undertake first aid training and responsibilities as required

To collate information, statistics and prepare reports as required by the Line Manager, Headteacher and the Governing Body

To put up and maintain appropriate classroom and corridor displays within Science, Technology and creative Arts areas of the school

To attend and actively participate in meetings relevant to the post

To contribute to and uphold the overall ethos of the School

To be responsible for your own continuing self-development and to participate in training and other learning activities and performance development as required

To be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, safeguarding, health and safety, security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person as soon as they arise
