Hands-On Explorations ENGAGE IMAGINATION

Whole-class, hands-on STEM Units enable upper-elementary students to make connections among the four areas of STEM learning. Each one-, two-, three-, or four-week unit incorporates science, technology, engineering, and math concepts into the activities. Students work in teams to brainstorm and solve problems, developing those transferable future-ready skills necessary in college and careers.

Designed to be flexible, the STEM Units can be incorporated in support of existing curriculum or as an entire course on their own. Units can be implemented individually or in Structures, Air, Electricity, or Magnetism themes. They fit into existing labs or classrooms and are easy for teachers to use and store.

STEM Unit Advantages:• Connects math and science knowledge with real-world STEM applications

• Develops student confidence in their design abilities and idea generation

• Prepares students for more independent thinking in middle school

• Can be implemented in a variety of ways, offering maximum flexibility for teachers

Teachers are provided with everything they need to implement the units, including curriculum resources and materials to complete the hands-on activities. NGSS and CC Math and ELA standards correlations provided.

• Think about what you have learned about movement, time, and control.

• Use what you have learned from studying the pictures to help you and your team design and build a ride.

Challenge:• Design and build a ride that you would like to have on

your school playground or in your neighborhood park.

• Make it interesting by including a bridge, a tunnel, and a snaky or a hilly section.

• Include a way to reach the beginning of the ride.

• Provide a safe place to land or end the ride.

• Try making the ride last as long as possible.
