Mishka help graad 7-leerdersMICHELLE VAN DER SPUY

Hul antwoorde het my verstom.

Does your business reallymake a profit?David Malherbe

The news recently featured the big turn-around that is happening at the SAA atpresent. For example, they are busy eliminat-ing flight routes that were notprofitable. These incurred a lossof more than R2,5 bn during oneyear. Now they have a new busi-ness plan which they believe willhelp them save R1,25 bn by theend of March 2015.

My first thought is why theyhave only now started to imple-mentanewbusinessplanandareonly now willing to cut down onroutes that are not profitable. They needed a bail-out of aR6,5 bn guarantee from govern-ment to keep the company afloat, whichmeans that taxpayers’ money is risked forthis unprofitable operation.

But in your business you cannot afford nottomakeaprofit.Whenyourcreditorsorbankdecide they will no longer bear with an un-profitable business, they simply close yourdoors and the government will definitely notbail you out.

Therefore you do not have the same luxuryofrunningonemptyandbeyondliketheSAA.You need to make sure that your business

stays profitable. Therefore my question toyou is whether you really know the cost ofeach product or service that you supply? Doyou know the exact amount of your fixed and

variablecostsandyourbreak-evenpoint? Without this informationyou risk going the SAA route.

I’ve come across quite a numberof business owners who think thatwhile there is money in the bankaccount, they can spend money. But often an unpleasant surprisewaits at the end of the month whenthey realise they have a shortfallpaying all the accounts.

Theonlywaytoensurethatyourbusiness makes enough profit andis able to grow, is by having a thor-

ough record and bookkeeping system to keeptrackofall expenses.Theinformationcollect-ed and presented in financial statements, iswhat isnecessary for futureplanning,wheth-er it means eliminating non-profitable as-pects of your business or expanding on theprofitable ones.

The only way to grow your business in fu-ture is by measuring what happened in thepast and then plan accordingly.

Come join sitting volleyball clubParaVolley, an inclusive sport for bothdisabled and enabled players, is playedfrom club up to paralympic level and isnow launching in Stellenbosch.

“The sport is extremely similar to tradi-tional volleyball, although played on thefloor, with a slightly smaller court and alower net, explains Elana van Brakel of thenew club in Stellenbosch.

“The rules are almost identical. Thesport is great for any leg amputees (aboveor below knee, single or double amputees).Players don’t need any equipment or pros-thetics to play and it is one of the few allinclusive sports where amputees actuallyhave an advantage over able-bodied play-

ers. It’s a fast-paced action sport with lotsof movement, tactics and game strategy,”she explained.

The first meeting of the newly formedStellenbosch club is at the DF Malan Hall,Stellenbosch University this Tuesday, 24February, at 19:00.

“Nopreviousvolleyballexperienceneed-ed, no wheelchairs or other equipment arerequired and you can wear simple sportsgear – the best is nylon shorts or/pants.

“ParaVolley South Africa promotes thesport of sitting volleyball and beach sittingvolleyball in South Africa and this eventis organised by ParaVolley South Africa inconjunction with Maties ParaSport,” VanBrakel said.

A new para-volleyball, or sitting volleyball club will be formed at Stellenbosch University next Tuesday.
