Tips for fire safetyVisitorsandresidentsof theWesternCapeshould act quickly and responsibly to pre-vent fires from becoming disasters.Anton Bredell, the Minister of Local

Government, Environmental Affairs andDevelopment Planning in the WesternCape, says when it comes to fires in theWestern Cape, firefighting entities andgovernment authorities cannot do the jobalone.“We need everyone’s help.”The Western Cape Disaster Manage-

ment Centre says fires are most oftencausedbyelectrical faultsorcarelessness.Cigarettes, matches and lighters, candles, heating appliances and open braai firescan all cause fires if not carefully moni-tored.The WCDMC has the following tips to

help keep families safe from fire:Whatifafirebreaksoutinmyhouse?) Warn people inside the house to get

out safely.) Help people to get out and stay out of

harm’s way.) If there is a lot of smoke, crawl out

below the smoke to escape the fire.

) Where possible, have more than oneexit from your house, with clear routes tothe door.Safety around an Open Flame) Keepmatches and lighters out of chil-

dren’s reach.) Cut candles in half to prevent them

falling over and use a candle holder.) Never leaveanopen fire – forexample

around a braai - unattended.) Do not let open fires – for example a

braai - get too big and out of control.) Monitor weather conditions. If the

wind is strong, rather put the fires out tillthe wind dies down.

General Safety tips) Keep a well-maintained fire extin-

guisher in your house, and know how touse it.

) If you have a garden hose, keep itrolled up and ready in case of fire.

) Have an escape plan, and make surethat the whole family knows the plan.

) Do not park in the way of a fire hy-drant (and remind your neighbours andvisitors to do the same).

Dink hieraan as jysonkrag oorweeg:V Dakstruktuur: die meeste Suid-Afrikaanse dakke moet volgensregulasie ’n lewendige las van50 kg/m² kan hanteer. Die sonpa-neleweeggemiddeld13,5 kg/m²asdit geïnstalleer is.

V Diedakmoetverkiesliknoordfront,maar enigiets tussennoord-noordwes of noord-noordoos, geegoeie resultate in Suid-Afrika.

V Die dakhelling: hoe verder

V Groot bome of strukture watskaduopdiepanelekangooi, moetvermy word.

kragverbruik weens hul intensieweverkoelingsaanlegte.

eerste dak sonkrag-aanleg groter as100kWp by Villiera-wynlandgoed in-stalleer.

Customer frustrationIn the news last week welearned of an irate cus-tomer who put up a hugebanner to air his frustra-tion with a cellphonecompany that would notattend to irregularitiesonhiscellphoneaccount. No one in the companywas willing to solve aproblem which the cus-tomer had no controlover.

The problem with manybig companies today is thatthe entrepreneurial ap-proach to the customer nolonger exists.

Too much distance comes between thecustomer and the person in the companywho can fix the concern. In the above-men-tionedcase,thecustomerwassimplyunableto speak to anyone that really cared.

It has become fashionable to have a tele-phone system that almost bars you fromspeaking to a human being. “For accountspress one; for customer care, press two” etc.The customer care I would like to receiveis that a human being shall pick up thephone at the other end and that I shall beable to speak to someone who can solve myproblem.

We all know the frustration of holding on

while the machine is busyfinishing its story andthen having to listen tomusic and advertise-ments for another 10 min-utes until you can finallyspeak to a human being.

Yet,whenourownbusi-nesses expand, what dowedo?Weinstallthesamesystem that we abhor inotherbusinesses, increas-ing the distance betweenour customers and theperson in the companywho can fix the problem.

There is a saying “Peo-ple support people, not

causes or organisations.” Many people dobusiness with a certain company becauseof the friendly or good service of some indi-vidual within the company that they builda relationship with over time.

Thus, if you have a small business, see toit that you focus on customer care that ispersonal and speedy. This is one of the greatadvantages of a small business; you can actmuch quicker than a big business in thesame industry.

Seetoit, therefore, thatyourendersuperi-or service and always make the needs andcomplaints of your customers a priority.
