New Features in Version 10.1Version 10.1 offers the following features to enhance your ability to build, share, and learn fromiThink and STELLA models:

Cycle Time

Cycle Time lets you time stamp and track material as it flows though the model in order to pre-cisely compute how long different tasks and activities are taking.

Delay Converters

You can identify Converters as changing over time in response to changes in its input as hap-pens with SMTH1, SMTH3, DELAY, DELAY3 and related Builtins. A Delay Converter shows a boxinside the regular Converter circle indicating it has some of the properties of a Stock. Because ithas properties of a stock it is possible for Delay Converters to be involved in feedback loops inwhich no explicit Stock exists.

Sketchable Graphs

Graphs can now take user input: you can create a sketch of the expected behavior of a modelvariable over time. When the simulation is run, you will be able to compare your sketch to theactual behavior of the variable. Sketchable graphs come in handy when you want users of yourmodel to "put a stake in the ground" regarding the performance of the model. Discrepanciesbetween expected and actual performance can motivate effective, efficient learning exper-iences.

Stella Live™ on the Interface

You can now create Interfaces for which the model constantly reruns whenever the user movesa slider or changes any other control. The lets users see how overall model behavior unfolds inresponse to their actions with graphs and tables updating instantly as changes are made.

Interface Control Shading

It is now possible to turn off shading for interface controls giving a cleaner more modern appear-ance to interfaces - supported on both the Desktop and Netsim. Use the Interface preferencesdialog to change this.

Individually Controlled Tables

Tables now store information about reporting period and type of reporting individually so youcan have different tables with different settings. Rerunning the model is no longer necessarywhen changing the report interval and other reporting options.

Compatibility with Stella Professional

Version 10.1 supports the use of models created in Stella Professional and maintains model ele-ments that have been customized in Stella Professional (such as fonts, sizes, and specializedlayout with bezier curves). This allows you to do model development work in Stella Professionaland Interface development work in Version 10.1.

New Features Relative to Version 9

Panels

Side-docked panels allow you to define and edit properties for model entities while still viewingthe diagram. Drag-and-drop entities from the diagram into equations to use as variables.Undock the panel to create a floating window that you can resize and place anywhere on yourscreen.

Multi-dimensional arrays

Expanded array capabilities provide more flexibility defining array equations, creating arrayedgraphical functions, and entering constants across an array. Create up to ten dimensions forarrayed entities. Index array elements by number or label. Use the new Array Editor to easilyimport or paste element labels from a spreadsheet or comma/tab-separated list.

Data Manager

The new Data Manager allows you to archive and recall simulation results. Name and save rundata from different scenarios or sensitivity tests to easily identify and reload results. Simulationdata is stored in a separate SQLite database file and accessible using standard database tools.

Embedded modules

Hierarchical modules are now embedded in a single model file by default. For collaborativemodel building and creation of reusable templates, use the option to automatically save mod-ules as separate files.

Statistical built-in functions

COMBINATIONS, FACTORIAL, INVNORM and PERMUTATIONS have been added to the list of stat-istical built-in functions. New stochastic distributions include BETA, BINOMIAL, GEOMETRIC,GAMMA, LOGISTIC, PARETO, TRIANGULAR, and WEIBULL.

Rich text documentation

Source information and other details about model variables can be documented in rich tex-t/HTML format using options available in the new Documentation panel.

Improved conveyor leakage

Conveyors now support multiple leakage flows. Use additional leak zone options to simplifymain chain structures that contain cohorts with varying leakage fractions.

Page 4: STELLAand iThink Version10.1ReleaseNoteslegacy.iseesystems.com/softwares/comprehensive-v10... · STELLAandiThinkVersion10.1ReleaseNotes ThankyouforupgradingtoVersion10.1.Thisisasignificantupgradetoversion10.0.6that

Expanded Find functionality

Use the new Find palette to locate model entities using string search, hierarchical views, and fil-tering capabilities. Drag and drop variables from the palette directly into variable equations andinput/output devices.

New graphical function options

Edit the input values (X-axis) of graphical functions to align with your data. Use the new con-tinuous extrapolation option to linearly extrapolate values that are beyond the graphed curve.

Industry standard XMILE format

Model files support the new industry standard (XMILE) for common interchange of systemdynamics models. Use any text or XML editor to search, edit or document your model.

More powerful modeling engine (STEAM)

The new STEAM engine does not place limits on the number of variables, data points and/ortime steps. This new more powerful and flexible engine will provide a solid foundation for futuredevelopment and expanded functionality of iThink and STELLA.

Updates to Existing FeaturesThe following enhancements to existing features were added in Version 10.1:

n New sensitivity analysis supports full Monte Carlo allowing for a broad range of dis-tributions in specifying input changes.

n Specifying units is more flexible and comprehensive with a new Unit Editor and improvedsyntax capabilities. It is now possible to define multiple aliases for a unit of measure sothat you have more flexibility in expressing compound units. When checking units the mes-sages provide better feedback on issues in dimensional consistency.

n Run speed has been improved significantly, especially for large models with many graphsand tables.

n The Find dialog has been enhanced with the following:n It will identify subtypes including cross level ghosts, graphical functions, invalid entit-ies, sector frames, discrete stocks, delay converters, summing converters.

n You can now filter on sectors, invalid and valid entities.

n Modules saved to separate files are now put in a folder prefixed with the model name (asin MyModel_Modules) so that Save As will not overwrite the old modules.

n New options have been added to Run Specs to let you better control the reporting of val-ues. Specifically, you now have control over whether flows are converters are computedwhen the model is paused and whether to record interpolated flow values when usingRunga-Kutta integration.

n Both error notification and usability have been improved for the Equation panel.

n There is more error checking on array usage both in equations and when connectingstocks with different dimensions.

n There is more flexibility when importing data into Graphical Functions on the equationpanel including automatic transposition of xy pairs laid out in rows.

n The import format now allows specification of array slices and importation of only someelements of an array.

n Both STELLA and iThink will open .itmx and .stmx files without needing to rename them.

The following enhancements to existing features were added in Version 10.0.5:

n The equation editor will automatically close when you click on any part of the diagram offof an entity. There is an optional pin to keep it open.

n When editing arrayed variables with multiple equations the editing box will position itselfto allow easy equation entry.

Page 6: STELLAand iThink Version10.1ReleaseNoteslegacy.iseesystems.com/softwares/comprehensive-v10... · STELLAandiThinkVersion10.1ReleaseNotes ThankyouforupgradingtoVersion10.1.Thisisasignificantupgradetoversion10.0.6that

n When editing points in graphical functions you can now select, copy and paste to subsetsof the y axis. To fill multiple cells with a single value type it in, copy it, select the targetcells for filling and paste.

n Circularity reports now show all model elements involved in the circularity.

n The data manager has been rewritten to improve performance. Sensitivity runs, espe-cially, will be much faster and there will not be any slowdown after multiple runs.

n Models open more quickly and run more quickly.

n The sensitivity specs setup allow for the use of arrayed variables (though Apply-to-All con-stants will all be changed together).

The following enhancements to existing features were added in Version 10.0.4:

n The Model Preferences dialog has a new option to show local names of cross-level ghosts.Selecting this option will display both the local name and (in parentheses) the cross-levelghost name. Equations using cross level ghosts are also simplified by using the local nameinstead of the fully-qualified cross-level ghost name.

n Cross-level throughputs that accept input from one module and provide output to anotherare now valid.

n The number of runs that can be saved in the Data Manager has been expanded from 99 to10,000.

n The default names of entities are now distinguished by type, for example, Stock 1, Flow 1and Converter 1.

n Circularity checking has been improved to recognize delay functions in equations includingDELAY, DELAY1, DELAY3, DELAYN, FORCST, SMTH1, SMTH3, SMTHN and TREND.

The following enhancements to existing features were added in Version 10.0.3:

n Data import and export now supports n-dimensional arrays.

n Locked models are now encrypted within the model file. A new high security option in theSecurity Preferences dialog requires a password to open (and decrypt) the model.

n The Finder palette now displays a ? in the icon of a model entity that is not defined.

n Analyze mode is now an option in the Run Specs dialog. By default, analyze mode isenabled so that model output for ALL model variables is stored in computer memory. Dis-abling analyze mode will conserve computer memory by ONLY storing model output forvariables assigned to an output device such as a graph or table. Models with a large num-ber of entities, a long simulation period or a very small DT will run faster and more effi-ciently when analyze mode is turned off.

n Multiple performance improvements have made opening, running and saving modelsfaster and more efficient.

The following enhancements to existing features were added in Version 10.0.1:

Translating ModelsOpening a STELLA or iThink model that was created in a previous version will automaticallytranslate the model so that it is compatible with version 10. In some cases, the translationrequires additional manual updates to the model. We recommend using the model diagnosticsfeature in previous versions to verify and repair models before opening them in version 10.

Due to encoding differences between Windows and Mac, models should be translated using thesame operating system that was used to author the original model. Opening a version 9 modelthat was created on a Windows computer may not translate correctly on a Macintosh computerand vice versa.

Below are details about how the software handles specific translation issues.

1. Variables with equations containing builtins that have been renamed, modified orremoved will automatically translate as follows:

Prior Version Format Version 10 TranslationARRAYIDX() Dimension_NameARRAYMAX(array[*]) MAX(array)ARRAYMAXIDX(array[*]) RANK(array, SIZE(array))ARRAYMEAN(array[*]) MEAN(array)ARRAYMIN(array[*]) MIN(array)ARRAYMINIDX(array[*]) RANK(array, 1)ARRAYRANK(array[*],x) RANK(array, x)ARRAYSTDDEV(array[*]) STDDEV(array)ARRAYSUM(array[*]) SUM(array)ARRAYVALUE(array[*],x) array[x]CAP(Conveyor) CAPACITY(Conveyor)COOKTIME(Oven) PROCTIME(Oven)DIMSIZE() SIZE(SELF)DIMSIZE(array[*]) SIZE(array)LOGN(x) LN(x)MOD(x, y) x MOD yPAUSE Message posterPCT(x) PERCENT(x)QELEM(Conveyor,x) Conveyor[x]QLEN(Queue) SIZE(Queue)SUM(x,y,z) (x + y + z)SWITCH(x,y) (x > y)

Prior Version Format Version 10 TranslationTRANSTIME(Conveyor) PROCTIME(Conveyor)MIN(x,y,z) MIN(x,MIN(y,z))MAX(x,y,z) MAX(x,MAX(y,z))

2. Variables with equations containing builtins that are not supported in this release, includ-ing SOUND, will no longer be valid when opened in version 10. A manual change to theequations for these variables is required for the model to run. Note also that equationspassing an argument to ARRAYIDX will need to be translated by hand (see brief descrip-tion below).

3. Decision process diamonds and sub-models will be converted to modules when opened inversion 10. Repositioning of model entities and other manual changes may be required.

4. If a model entity has the same name as an array dimension name, the entity name is nolonger valid in equations. Model entities with the same name as array dimension namesmust be renamed for equations to be valid.

5. Dimension element names that start with 1 and continue consecutively will translate to adimension indexed by number. Anything else will translate to a dimension indexed bylabel.

6. Element labels in version 10 cannot be numbers or begin with a number. If you have amodel created in a previous version with element names that are not consecutive startingfrom 1, open the model in the previous version and put a letter in front of each elementname so that the model will translate correctly.

7. If a conveyor name is in the equation for the transit time, it will not translate correctly. Tocorrect this issue, open the model in the previous version and create a converter that isassigned the same value as the conveyor. Use the newly created converter to definetransit time so that the model will translate correctly in version 10.

8. If an oven name is in the equation for its cook time, it will not translate correctly. To cor-rect this issue, open the model in the previous version and create a converter that isassigned the same value as the oven. Use the newly created converter to define cooktime so that the model will translate correctly in version 10.

9. Documentation for an arrayed variable now applies to all elements of the array. Opening amodel saved in a previous version with multiple documents in an arrayed variable, onlyretains one of the documents.

10. Sector names that are no longer valid will automatically be renamed.

11. If a model created in a previous version uses a cross-level ghost in an equation for theArrest option, version 10 will not correctly translate the fully qualified name of the ghostedentity. Equations that use cross-level ghosts for the Arrest option will need to be manuallyupdated in version 10.

Page 10: STELLAand iThink Version10.1ReleaseNoteslegacy.iseesystems.com/softwares/comprehensive-v10... · STELLAandiThinkVersion10.1ReleaseNotes ThankyouforupgradingtoVersion10.1.Thisisasignificantupgradetoversion10.0.6that

12. Graphical Input Devices assigned to Apply to All arrayed entities will no longer beassigned when the model is opened in version 10. To achieve the same functionality, cre-ate a non-arrayed graphical function and use that to define the equation of the Apply to Allentity. (The Apply to All entity should not be a graphical function.) Assign the newly cre-ated graphical function to the Graphical Input Device.

13. The Builtins DT, INF, PI, STARTTIME, STOPTIME and TIME can no longer be optionally fol-lowed by empty parentheses (). Just remove the parentheses to make the equations validin version 10.

1. Changing a conveyor from discrete to continuous no longer causes the software to crash.

2. Multiple exponential leakages now initialize properly.

3. Variable transit times based on the conveyor values no longer result in a circular con-nection error.

4. Renaming a transit time variable no longer causes a crash.

Graphs and Tables

1. Automatic scaling on comparative graphs now updates properly.

2. Globally scaled variables in a graph can now be De-Set.

3. Dragging a variable inside a module from the Find palette to a graph or table now worksproperly.

4. Data no longer disappears from locked tables after opening the table dialog.

5. Table dialogs for tables with blank lines no longer causes the software to crash.

6. Corrected a problem with variables not saving in a table with the 'Use month names'option selected.

7. 'Hide detail' option is now enabled on locked tables.

Modules

1. Importing a model that contains a module with the same name now works properly.

2. Importing a model with an interface into a module no longer crashes when saving.

3. Models with multiple nested modules now save correctly.

4. Cross-level ghosts used in an equation now save correctly.

Saving

1. Saving a model file on a Mac computer with an .itm or .stm extension is no longer anoption.

2. Precision settings in scales and ranges now save correctly.

3. Print orientation now saves correctly.

4. Navigation buttons no longer save as menu buttons.

5. Navigation buttons that navigate from the interface to the model layer or between modulelevels now save properly.

6. The zoom level on navigation buttons are now being saved.

7. Locked models now remain locked after saving.

8. Graph annotations now save.

The following defects were fixed in Version 10:

1. Corrected a problem with oven COOKTIME being forced to ZERO when not cooking.COOKTIME now only changes when OSTATE becomes 1.

2. Fixed a problem where very small numbers were not truncating properly. Mathematicallyinsignificant numbers are now being truncated and returning a value equal to 0. Logicstatements comparing variables to 0 may need to be updated in version 10 to get thesame simulation results as in previous versions.

3. Data import/export to a CSV file no longer requires Microsoft Excel to be installed.

4. Fixed a problem with RUNCOUNT returning 1 instead of 0 for newly opened models.

5. Fixed a calculation problem with ARRAYSTDDEV.

6. Corrected an issue whereby exponential leakage with leakage fraction set to 0 gave erro-neous results.

Known IssuesThe following are known issues in Version 10.1:

1. Models saved in Version 10.1 may not work correctly if opened in previous versions.

2. Diagrams copied to the clipboard will paste as bitmaps. A workaround for this is to holddown the Shift key while doing the copy (either from the menu or via the Ctrl+C shortcut). When you do this vector graphics will be placed in the clipboard, but not model structure. On Windows use Paste As in the receiving application end select Enhanced Metafile toensure you get the best results.

3. Importing a model file into a module requires the file to be in a Version 10 format. If youwant to import a model that was saved in a previous version, open and save the model inVersion 10 before importing it.

4. When renaming a module that has the 'Save in separate file' option enabled, the modulefile is renamed regardless of whether you save your changes or not.

5. Play Movie buttons on Macintosh computers do not display the video.

6. Conveyors that do not have an outflow no longer accept inflowing material and will showdifferent model behavior than in previous versions.

7. If you disconnect an outflow from a conveyor with leakage the first leakage is not changedto be the outflow. Disconnect and reconnect all leakages or save and reopen the modelafter disconnected the outflow to work around this.

8. On Windows machines, if you do not have Quicktime installed, an error message mayappear indicating the program cannot start because QTCF.dll is missing. Click OK and thesoftware should start without a problem. Quicktime is only required if the models you arerunning use Quicktime files.

9. You may experience issues with model layer paging if the page size of your printer differsfrom the one the model was saved on. To correct this problem, go to Page Setup andselect a printer with the same page size.

10. Copy and pasting data does not support non-English numeric formats. Use the dataimport/export feature to copy data in non-English numeric formats.

11. If you are exporting a comparative table and stop a run, the Excel worksheet will onlyshow values for prior runs up to the point where you stopped the current run.

12. When exporting data, if DT is a repeating decimal in base-2 (such as 0.10 or 0.20), thereported values for TIME will drift from their true values (in particular, they will becomedecimal values).

13. Data will not import if variables names contain a percent (%) sign.

14. Importing JPGs, GIFs and BMPs require that the image and the monitor be set to 32-bitcolor.

15. When using the "Run selected modules option", assigned inputs that are not in a runningmodule will not have values even if their corresponding outputs are in a running module.

16. On Windows machines with dual display monitors, the right-click context menu will notappear on the secondary display if it is positioned to the left of the primary display.

17. Animation may significantly impact performance when using arrays. For medium and largemodels with arrays, we recommend turning animation OFF.

18. Importing a module with the same dimension name as another array in the model but dif-fering elements, will cause the equations that use that dimension to be reset if the "Applyto All" option is not enabled.
