HOURS OF OPERATION

MONDAY – FRIDAY

8:30AM – 4:30PM

Programs funded in part by the Dept. For The Aging

Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer…

They say it’s the hottest year on record and I believe it! We are continuing to be a Cooling

Center for anyone needing to cool off. When we are given the okay from the Dept. for the Ag-

ing, we stay open until 6pm. Otherwise, we stay open until 4:30, our usual closing time. Any-

one (you don’t need to be a senior) who needs to cool off can come into the center. Please

remember to stay hydrated and use sun block.

We have some interesting programs starting at Stein this summer. Lorraine and Stephanie

are two Occupational Therapists from SUNY Downstate who will be here at Stein through next

May, 2017. They are focusing on the prevention of falling and strengthening your balance.

They will give informational talks and how to make your home safe and prevent a fall at home.

We are also continuing to offer on-site help in applying for Medicaid in a collaboration with

Public Health Solutions whose staff member is here on Wednesdays and Fridays. Make an ap-

pointment for Alex if you are interested in applying.

Stein is planning a trip to The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx on Wednesday, Au-

gust 10th. The Garden is showing an exhibit of Impressionist paintings inspired by gardens.

The cost of the trip is $30.00 which includes a box lunch, bus transportation and admission to

the garden. The bus leaves Stein at 9:30 am and returns at 3:30 pm. There are a few seats left,

so if you would like to go, please sign up with Helen.

We are planning to bring back Belly Dancing with Zoe Kennedy. Not only is it fun, but it’s

also very healthy to belly dance. The class plans to start on Friday, Sept. 9th, so if you are in-

terested, please let Helen know.

Our two young men, Malcolm and Victor have completed their internships here, helping

out with Maintenance and have moved on to the next step in their vocational training. They

have become honorary members of our Stein family and we thank them for their dedication

and hard work. Janice and Michelle are MSW interns from Fordham University. Janice has

completed her internship and Michelle will be finished on August 5th. They have learned a lot

and we have been fortunate to have them here. We wish both women the best of luck in their

educational pursuits. We will have two new MSW students from Hunter College School of So-

cial Work.

We will be starting a new series of Feldenkrais in September, same day, Tuesday from 11 to

12 noon. We have also started a Chair Yoga class on Thursdays from 12:15 to 1:15. I have also

had a visit from a professional singer named Andrew who would like to start a Singing Class.

I want to thank our wonderful volunteers who, despite the heat and occasional chaos, con-

tinue to help us run the center. We couldn’t do it without them. We are still tweaking the

meal service procedure so that everyone gets served in a timely manner, but we need your

cooperation and understanding. The dining room set up is difficult and when crowded, it is

hard to serve everyone first. Please treat our servers with respect, they are trying to do their

job and get your lunch to you ASAP.

Jane Barry, Executive Director

Within every lifetime there are events so special they merit a lasting remembrance. The Stein Senior Center TREE OF LIFE offers you a unique opportunity to perpetuate the memory of those

moments: a wedding, graduation, anniversary, birth, honor, or any other personal or family happening. The TREE OF LIFE is a beautiful sculpture adorned with 175 leaves, apples, doves and stones at its base.

The Tree of Life is a most gratifying way to permanently record a special personal or family event.
