HIGH STRENGTH STEEL PRODUCTION A Pathway to Prosperity www.eGeneration.org HIGH STRENGTH STEEL PRODUCTION What You Should Know: Highstrength steels are a costefficient means of reducing the weight, of both premiumsegment cars and of midsize and compact vehicles. Advanced highstrength steel is seeing rapid growth in the auto industry. Coal ash contains magnesium, titanium, vanadium, molybdenum, silicon, and phosphorus that can be used as microalloying agents to make high strength steels. Coal ash also contains thorium and uranium, elements that can fuel a Molten Salt Reactor (MSR) to produce electricity. Production of advanced high strength steels requires a lot of electricity. When thorium based MSRs are developed for commercial use and become commonplace, thorium will have value and make it profitable to extract valuable microalloying metals and from coal ash. The most conservative estimate for the MSR is that it can produce electricity at $.04 per KW/hr., which would allow America to produce advanced high strength steels cheaper than China and India. Increased mileage CAFÉ standards on American automobiles require lighter cars made from more aluminum, high strength steels, and plastics. Higher mileage cars make America less dependent on foreign oil. A robust domestic highstrength steel industry is vital to our national interests. The eGeneration Foundation is working to form an alliance to develop a national energy plan, promoting the next generation of fuels powered by Molten Salt Reactor technology. As studies and analysis of this promising technology are widely understood, there will be widespread industry support for commercializing this next generation process, thus providing a clear pathway to prosperity. 1768 East 25 th Street Suite 301 Cleveland, OH 44114 216.367.0602 www.eGeneration.org The eGeneration Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit educational charity. HIGH STRENGTH STEEL PRODUCTION What  You  Should  Know:

• High-‐strength  steels  are  a  cost-‐efficient  means  of  reducing  the  weight,  of  both  premium-‐segment  cars  and  of  mid-‐size  and  compact  vehicles.

• Advanced  high-‐strength  steel  is  seeing  rapid  growth  in  the  auto  industry.  • Coal  ash  contains  magnesium,  titanium,  vanadium,  molybdenum,  silicon,  and  phosphorus  that  can  be  used  as  microalloying  agents  to  make  high-‐strength  steels.  Coal  ash  also  contains  thorium  and  uranium,  elements  that  can  fuel  a  Molten  Salt  Reactor  (MSR)  to  produce  electricity.

• Production  of  advanced  high  strength  steels  requires  a  lot  of  electricity.  • When  thorium  based  MSRs  are  developed  for  commercial  use  and  become  commonplace,  thorium  will  have  value  and  make  it  profitable  to  extract  valuable  microalloying  metals  and  from  coal  ash.

• The  most  conservative  estimate  for  the  MSR  is  that  it  can  produce  electricity  at  $.04  per  KW/hr.,  which  would  allow  America  to  produce  advanced  high-‐strength  steels  cheaper  than  China  and  India.

• Increased  mileage  CAFÉ  standards  on  American  automobiles  require  lighter  cars  made  from  more  aluminum,  high  strength  steels,  and  plastics.

• Higher  mileage  cars  make  America  less  dependent  on  foreign  oil.  A  robust  domestic  high-‐strength  steel  industry  is  vital  to  our  national  interests.
